Sara Haines

OF THE VIEW ON ABC

Q: Wasn’t Sara Haines, of “The View,” on “Today” many years ago?

A: She was, and she actually worked behind the scenes of the NBC morning show before becoming an on-air presence on it. In fact, she was behind the scenes at the network overall, since she initially was a page, assisting on various programs and also giving studio tours. After her time doing that, she became a production coordinator on “Today,” again filling a variety of functions in helping to get the show on the air. Eventually, Haines became a contributing correspondent for the fourth hour of “Today” from 2009 to 2013, which set her up to make a move to ABC News. Though she did general reporting, she also became the entertainment-news anchor on weekend editions of “Good Morning America.” That gave her a visibility that surely helped when “The View” needed someone at its table, a job Haines filled a number of times as a guest before she was named a permanent co-host of the show in 2016.

In 2018, Haines left “The View” to join Michael Strahan as a host of a third weekday hour of “Good Morning America,” with Keke Palmer joining them later as another host. When the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020, that incarnation of the hour was replaced by “GMA3: What You Need to Know” (which has remained since), and Haines returned to “The View.”

Haines also has done other work for ABC, in both news and entertainment programming. She has hosted a version of the game show “The Chase,” and she recently served as a correspondent – along with W. Kamau Bell – for the 17th season of the John Quinones-hosted “What Would You Do?”

U.S. women’s basketball in search of eighth consecutive gold medal

Day 9 of the 2024 Paris Olympics continues with women’s basketball as the United States takes on Germany at Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Villeneuve-d’Ascq, France, Sunday, Aug. 4, with tip-off airing live on NBC and Peacock.

Gearing up for what the U.S. hopes will be its eighth consecutive gold medal, it hopes to continue its dominance on the international stage — something it has done since 1996.

Leading the charge are two-time WNBA MVPs A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart, alongside soon-to-be sixtime Olympian Diana Taurasi. Joining in on the younger side, but still carrying a tremendous amount of credited experience, are the likes of Jackie Young, Brittney Griner, Napheesa Collier and none other than Las Vegas Aces guard Kelsey Plum.

A veteran point guard with scoring prowess and a fearless playmaking ability always on full display, Plum has been a major piece for the American women’s basketball program in both 3x3 and 5-on-5 basketball, earning her only Olympic medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 3x3.

Leading up to the 2024 Paris Olympics, Plum has been on fire in the WNBA, averaging 18.7 points with a shooting percentage of 45.3% from the field and 39.8% from beyond the arch. Beyond that, Plum averages 4.7 assists, while adding 2.3 rebounds, showing her hustle, determination and incredible versatility as a point guard.

Four-time WNBA champion and three-time WNBA Coach of the Year Cheryl Reeve has put together a team with a balanced mix of veterans and youth, something that not many of the other teams will have. In 13 Olympic appearances, the American women’s basketball team has never missed the podium, even in the two years it didn’t win gold.

The U.S. faces Germany, Japan and Belgium in Group C, with the U.S. taking on Germany in the final group stage match Sunday, Aug. 4.

It seems the House Targaryen may be in need of some remodeling. While the Iron Throne looks perfect in any room, it has people — namely, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) — going to great lengths to keep it all to themselves in this Season 2 finale of “House of the Dragon,” airing this Sunday, August 4, on HBO. ‘The Umbrella Academy’ siblings face the final timeline

Stripped of their powers and facing new foes that want them dead, the Hargreeves siblings are back in the fourth and final season of “The Umbrella Academy,” premiering Thursday, Aug. 8, on Netflix.

Stuck — for now, at least — as mere mortals with no powers and feeling enemies encroaching upon them, there’s no telling just what is about to happen to the Hargreeves in this final 10-episode season. On top of past time jumps and their resulting paradoxes affecting the timeline the siblings now find themselves in, a new group, calling themselves The Keepers, don’t believe their own reality and see a day of reckoning on the horizon.

The formerly estranged superhero siblings, brought together by the apparent death of their father, are now just strange, as they have spent the past three seasons joined at the hip, taking on a world out to get them. Spontaneously born on the same day to different mothers all over the world and adopted and raised by Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore, “For All Mankind”) at the Umbrella Academy, each of the seven siblings possesses a unique power.

Elliot Page (“Tales of the City”) is Viktor, who can control soundwaves; Tom Hopper (“Black Sails”) is Luther, an astronaut with super strength; David Castaneda (“Most Dangerous Game”) is the telekinetic Diego; Emmy Raver-Lampman (“The Beekeeper,” 2024) is Allison, who controls reality with her well-placed rumors; Robert Sheehan (“Misfits”) is Klaus, who is able to speak to the dead; Aidan Gallagher (“Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn”) is the time-jumping Five; and Justin H. Min (“Beef”) is Ben, whose trusty tentacles are always at the ready.

Joining this season is David Cross (“You Hurt My Feelings,” 2023) as Sy Grossman, a family man on a desperate hunt for his daughter. Returning this season is Ritu Arya (“Feel Good”) as Lila Pitts, another superhuman with the ability to mirror anyone else’s power.

Looking for love in all the wrong places? Try looking for it on national television. Fortunately, bachelorette Jenn Tran seems to be handling her selection of eligible men just fine, but as the numbers narrow and dates grow more serious, Jenn is left to wonder if “the one” is in her cards, or if she’ll be left with a handful of jokers. Season 21 of “The Bachelorette” continues Monday, August 5, with a new episode airing on ABC. Missed a moment? Catch up with episodes and clips available to stream at abc.com/ show/2294c465-f2ed-45e0-954f-d994c0efc1dc

PUZZLE SOLUTIONS

Lila wasn’t raised with the Hargreeves as a member of the academy, but she’s joined the crew of reunited siblings in adulthood. Ben is back from the dead this season, having died during one of the siblings’ missions years ago. At first appearing only to Klaus as a ghost, the rest of the Hargreeves encountered him again in an alternate timeline where he was a member of a different superhero family at the Sparrow Academy. In the final season, all of the siblings are reunited on the same timeline, though Ben still has no memory of the Umbrella Academy, and it’s revealed in an official trailer that the siblings cannot recall any concrete memories about Ben’s death. They all have a lot to catch up on while some new enemies are hot on their tails. New cast members include a real-life married couple, portraying what else but an on-screen married couple. Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”) and Megan Mullally (“Party Down”) are Drs. Gene and Jean Thibedeau, two seemingly normal Midwestern community college professors teaching a radical curriculum.

Somehow, the Thibedeaus have pieced together the puzzle constructed by the Hargreeves’ time-jumping chaos and are keen to share their theories with others who are open to believing their reality is a lie. “That tentacle boy is the key to understanding all the timelines,” Gene lectures in the trailer for the upcoming season, training all eyes on Ben. Netflix has teased fans with Easter egg-filled posters, a full set of episode titles, thrilling trailers and even a peek at a page of the season premiere’s script. But so far, cast and crew have remained tight-lipped about what’s to come during the show’s final season. In an interview with RadioTimes in March, Page shared all he could about the upcoming season, saying, “I’m not allowed to say anything, but it’s gonna be, as per usual, very fun, classic Hargreeves chaos and hijinks.”

There ain’t no rest for the Bears, and championship rings don’t grow on trees. Camera crews from NFL Films follow the Chicago Bears as they begin training camp in preparation for the 2024-2025 NFL season, putting a spotlight on the team’s rookie quarterback, Caleb Williams, as he faces immense pressure from the rest of the team. Keep the game going with the premiere of “Hard Knocks: Training Camp With the Chicago Bears,” airing Tuesday, August 6, on HBO, and with clips, bloopers and more available at hbo. com/hard-knocks

Alisha Newton OF HEARTLAND ON HALLMARK

Q: What’s Alisha Newton been doing since she left “Heartland”? Can I see her in anything else?

A: Alisha Newton’s character, Georgie, ceased to be a regular fixture on “Heartland” in 2021 (more on that in a minute). That was certainly tough for fans, but the fact that she’s appeared in a lot of other things since has certainly helped.

She climbed right back into the saddle (for non-fans: that’s a solid “Heartland” joke, since Georgie is an accomplished horseback rider) in 2022, starring in the Netflix limited series “Devil in Ohio,” a psychological drama led by Emily Deschanel (“Bones”).

She also had two different projects last year, appearing in the Hallmark telefilm “The More Love Grows” and starring in the Netflix teen drama “My Life With the Walter Boys.” The latter series was renewed for a second season just two weeks after its debut, though no release date has been announced yet.

As if that weren’t enough, Newton will also be a supporting player in the new drama series “Murder in a Small Town,” another Canadian series (like “Heartland”), which will premiere on Global in Canada and Fox in the U.S. this fall.

As I hinted at the outset, in the midst of all this she found time to return to “Heartland” for a few episodes in Season 16.

But — spoiler alert if you aren’t caught up — that proved to be temporary, it seems. There’s no word yet if or when she’ll come back to the fictional Alberta town again.
