Our Story

n 1945, Don and Harry Schimmer set off on a new adventure that has brought thousands of happy customers and great memories to people in the Mendota area and far beyond. Seventy-five years ago, the two founded Schimmer Pontiac Co., the first dealership in what has become the Schimmer Automotive Family, which has blossomed into the premiere auto dealer throughout the Illinois Valley. The Schimmer Pontiac Co. was first located at 6th St. and 6th Ave. in Mendota, and the business thrived for more than three decades before expanding in 1978 to add a Buick-Olds dealership and again in 1982 to add a Chevrolet dealership. In 1989, the dealership took its next step forward as the Schimmer dealership moved from its original location at 1503 Washington St. to its new building on Rt. 251 south of Mendota where it remains to this day. However, the Schimmer’s were not done adding to its array of versatile dealerships as in 1991 Don – along with his son Jeff and daughter Dona – purchased the Lincoln-Ford-Mercury dealership in Peru. A few years later, Jeff Schimmer purchased what was R&R Ford, located to the north of the Schimmer dealership on Rt. 251 south of Mendota, and renamed the dealership Schimmer Ford. In 2012, the group added to its dealership with the purchase of Spring Valley Ford to complete its amazing selection of dealerships. Throughout the past 75 years, the Schimmer Family has taken pride in serving their communities and it shows with the way it has run its businesses. Mendota Chamber combines business promotion with community events The Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce continues to reach out to businesses and residents throughout the area with a number of innovative programs combined with their traditional sponsorship of the annual Sweet Corn Festival. The Chamber’s Shop Local program was greeted favorably by the Mendota community and will be repeated again in 2020. For every $10 spent at each participating business, shoppers receive a sticker. Shoppers fill their card with stickers and turn them into the Chamber. The cards are entered into a grand prize drawing of gift certificates and prizes from businesses. In 2019, 1,036 cards were turned in which totaled $259,000, an increase of $77,750 from 2018, spent in Mendota from Nov. 15

City of Mendota The Imagine Illinois Avenue project’s goal was to upgrade and beautify Illinois Avenue. Upgrades were done to the sanitary sewer, storm sewer and water main services. The street and sidewalks were replaced from Washington to Jefferson Street and other items that were added to the streetscape included stamped colored concrete, new street lights, decorative park benches and trash receptacles, as well as landscaping. The Mendota Gardening Club worked with the city of Mendota to purchase and plant trees along Illinois

Avenue. Hydrangea trees were planted on both sides of the street. In addition to the trees, the Gardening Club also planted 5,000 daffodil bulbs in the 10 flower beds on Illinois Avenue. The bulbs were a mixture of four different types of daffodils and they will bloom in four different waves from early to late spring. 100 allium bulbs were also planted. The bulbs will be a purple flower that grows when the daffodils are finished growing. The daffodils are dedicated to longtime Gardening Club member Jim Armstrong, who recently passed away.

Co., the oldest manufacturing firm in Mendota, can trace its roots in the area back to the turn of the 20th century, although the company history goes even farther back than that. Abigail Women’s Center offers free and confidential services Abigail Women’s Center first opened as a pregnancy resource center on Main Street in 1997. In 2007, the Center was able to perform pregnancy tests and Limited OB ultrasounds under the direction of a Medical Director. Betty Pappas, the current Executive Director, has been apart of Abigail Women’s Center since 2010. The Center then moved to its current location in 2014 and eventually purchased the property in January of 2016. Both Betty and her administrative assistant, Teri McDowell, are among the first faces seen when entering the Center. By serving the Mendota and surrounding areas, Abigail Women’s Center helps pregnant women and their unborn children by offering free and confidential services. These free services include Pregnancy and Abortion Counseling,

pregnancy testing and verification of pregnancy, limited OB ultrasounds, pregnancy and parenting support classes, and a boutique filled with baby and toddler necessities and accessories. The goal of Abigail Women’s Center is to show love and generosity to these women and their families. The

Center provides between 350-500 services to women and their babies annually. Abigail Women’s Center is not supported through local government funding but only made possible through generous donors like you. This year’s fundraising banquet was different than in the past as it was an entirely

virtual event. “It was very interesting to have a banquet without people being present. It was amazing to see the generosity provided by so many people,” said Betty Pappas. Starved Rock Wood Products - A small town company with big plans Despite all the challenges that 2020 has brought, for Starved Rock Wood Products this past year has still been one of continued growth and, above all, a time to prepare for what should be a game-changing 2021. This December the company will be opening a stunning new showroom at the ABT Design Center in Glenview, IL – the place where most Chicagoans go to buy their new kitchen and household appliances. Showcasing twelve full size kitchens and all the different cabinet styles and finishes the company manufactures, the space is also designed to bring to life what makes the company different from many of its competitors. In addition to Glenview, another showroom is being developed for a 2021 opening in Mendota, at the site of the main factory.
