A closer look at the people, places and businesses that make the Mendota area a great place to live!
Black Bros. Co. — Mendota’s oldest manufacturing firm — takes great pride in the fact it continues to operate as a family-owned producer of quality American machines in a day and age when such businesses are becoming harder and harder to come by.
In fact, with roots in town dating back to the turn of the 20th century, the Black family torch is currently being handed off to the sixth generation as Evan Carroll readies to take the reigns from current CEO Matt Carroll.
Founded in 1882 in Lanark, Scotland by William Black and his five sons — William Jr., John, James, Walter and David — the brothers relocated the company across seas to Chicago in 1884 and later settled in Mendota in 1900. “The World’s Greatest Little City” was picked based on its centralized location to the growing woodworking industry in the region and it’s prime railroad access.
Since that time Black Bros. Co. has remained profitable by staying true to its values: innovative engineer
ing, impeccable manufacturing, and dedicated service. And, through the years, the people of Black Bros. also have been committed to the Mendota community, including numerous past Chamber of Commerce presidents and volunteers across a platitude of
civic and youth organizations.
Manufacturers who use Black Bros. equipment include producers of furniture, kitchen cabinets, doors, windows, wall paneling, ceiling and floor tile, insulations, and RVs to name a few.

Dust off those rackets, it’s almost time to play pickleball.
The City of Mendota is finishing work on four new pickleball courts at Lake Mendota Park and Sports Complex. The four brand new courts should be open by spring 2023, said Public Works Director Tim Kimrey.
In addition to the four new courts, the city is repainting and restriping the tennis courts at Blackstone Park for the dual purpose of playing tennis or pickleball, Kimrey said.
Pickleball is one of the fast est growing sports in the coun try and news of the new courts has players excited, said Steve Donnell, branch manager for the Mendota Area YMCA. He said players are driving to Peru and as far as Sandwich and Yorkville to use their pickle ball courts to play.
Donnell said with the great collaboration between the city of Mendota and the YMCA he’s sure there will be programming for pickle-
ball players in the coming months, such as lessons and possibly teams and leagues.
“I’m very excited about this,” Donnell said, he added, “We do so much programming for our youth, we want to serve all demographics and we are working hard to improve pro gramming for adults.”
There’s also excitement
growing for the addition of the new dog park on the west side of Lake Mendota Park. An open area of the park will have fencing to create a dog park. The aim is to open the park by spring 2023.
Additionally, there are two new basketball courts under construction, one at the south side of Lake Mendota Park
and the other at Blackstone Park, Kimrey said.
Another new item in the works is the construction of two permanent all-gender washrooms at Lake Mendota Parka and Blackstone Park. These permanent structures will have running water.
This fall the city crews were busy handling park improvements and maintenance, like removing the riprap, stones, around Lake Mendota and re-seeding the perimeter of the lake. Additionally, the roofs were replaced at two shelters, one at Lake Mendota Park and one at Lake Kaskusha Park.
There is new playground equipment at Lake Mendota playground including an all-access swing.
The end of the year is a busy time for making park improvements to ensure when the snow melts and spring returns, there will be beautiful park spaces and amenities for all to enjoy.

Successful business own ers know it takes more than turning on the lights and opening the doors to manage a successful company. Finding the right people and having a network of business asso ciates for advice and support can help a company, whether large or small, continue to grow and thrive.

Sublette Farmers Elevator continues to distribute profits back to stockholders based on the amount of business it has transacted and remains a viable part of the local economy.

ADM’s largest flour mill — built from the ground up in one project — continues to proudly reside in Mendota.
The Archer Daniels Mid land Flour Mill can produce more than 3 million pounds of flour per day (30,000 cwts to be exact) and employs 30-40 people.
The facility, for which con struction began in June 2017 and was completed in 2018, can mill spring, winter and soft wheat varieties plus two types of whole wheat. Production started around Aug. 1, 2018.
Why did ADM choose Men dota for the mill? ADM, one of the world’s largest agricultural processors and food ingredient providers, already had an exist ing ADM grain transfer facility in Mendota with a rail loop initially constructed by Fasco Mills before ADM bought the local company in 2007.
However, ADM had an aging facility in the Chicago area and the company needed a new location to better serve its customers, while
Mendota’s strong workforce would provide the company with the employees needed to be able to make the highest
quality flour.
ADM is a proud Mendota business and supporter of the Mendota area as its actively
involved in community events like the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival and ag-related projects across the region.

The Mendota Area YMCA is working on diversifying its programming to be more inclusive. In the past we focused mainly on traditional sports for youth. This will continue, however the needs of our youth and entire community are more than that.
Through our partnership with the Regional Office of Education 35, we are endeavoring to create more educational programs through our After School Program, Day Camps, as well as to offer scholastic assistance for those who may need it. Additionally, we will have begun to offer more to senior citizens in fitness and healthy living. We are striving to embrace and promote the various cultures that make up our community so that we may assist in closing the gaps between generations and traditions. Through this new catalog of offerings to Mendota and the surrounding area, we hope to truly embrace the three pillars of the YMCA charter: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
