Matt & Kat Saturday, August 14 • 3-5 p.m. Matt Harmon and Kat Blomquist are from the LPO area (Matt was born and raised in Waltham; Kat was born and raised in Oglesby). They met in high school, played in a couple of the talent shows together and both shared a love for music. Matt started to play in a band before high school was over, and he’s still in that same band (formerly Snap Holiday; now Trophies for Tryin’) Kat started to spread her musical wings when friends in Las Vegas asked her to be their lead singer. She learned a lot and had a blast in that band and eventually played solo gigs in Austin, TX. She learned a lot from local musicians in the LPO area and finally wanted to play solo gigs in the area when Matt stated he’d love to play in a duo with her. Matt and Kat have played in their duo since the fall of 2018. Though they’re always adding new songs from different decades, they find themselves playing many songs from the 90s. Be sure to check out Matt & Kat – sponsored by Dr. Tara N. VanDeWyngaerde O.D., P.C – from 3-5 p.m. Saturday on the First State Bank Stage.

Saturday, August 14 • 8 p.m.
An Oglesby native, Andrew was the ninth of 12 children. He and his siblings each learned an instrument in the school concert band, and music from classical to classic filled his home. At age 13, he took guitar lessons from an old woman at the local pawn shop. Still, music would not become his primary pursuit until years later when he moved to Chicago.
His family provided his introduction to music, from Elvis to Gospel to Musicals to Duran Duran. True to his Midwest culture, Americana and Soul music have resonated through his live performances of both covers and originals. Be sure to check out Andrew Blomquist – sponsored by Mendota Mutual Insurance – from 5-7 p.m. Saturday in the hospitality tent.

We The Least is a band of singer/ songwriters from Mendota, IL. Members include Michaela DeLong (vocals/keys), Nathanael DeLong (vocals/bass/guitar), Noah DeLong (drums), and Dell May (vocals/bass/guitar). They released their first 11-track album entitled “Screw It Up” in 2019. The band hopes to inspire both deeper faith and deeper joy in the lives of their listeners, thus why they choose to write in a variety of musical and lyrical styles. The band recently released their second album “Sundae Best” on February 23, 2021. Both albums are present on all major streaming platforms, and physical copies will be available for sale
after the show or online at www.wetheleast.com. We The Least likes to refer to themselves as “your mom’s favorite band.” They enjoy Marchelloni’s pizza and long walks on the beach. The band was hoping to be contestants in the pageant itself, but after they couldn’t find anyone to sponsor them, they agreed to play music for the pageant instead. On August 13th at 7:00 p.m., the band will be playing a mix of oldies, classic rock, contemporary pop/country, and a few original songs. In everything that they do, We The Least wants to be the least important, so that God would get all of the glory. John 3:30.

Mendota’s Sweet Corn Festival Parade will again welcome the Dixon American Legion Post 40 & 8, Lee County Voiture #409 to their parade on Sunday, Aug. 11. The white locomotive, often referred to as the “White Ghost,” was built in Dixon 85 years ago by WWI Veterans and their friends. It is being brought to the Festival by Homestead Realty of Mendota. The unit navigates under its own power down the parade route and usually is surrounded by Legion members carrying American Flags. It is made of wood and pressed wood and has an interesting history.
It is a replica of the engines that were used on the narrow gage railroads of France during WWI to transport Americans. They hauled small box cars called “voitures” with a capacity of 40 men and 8 horses. Hence the name 40 & 8. The “40 & 8” is a Veterans Honor Society today. The group sponsors nurses training scholarships, veterans support groups, youth sports, and child welfare. The locomotive has attended many State parades and veterans conventions to raise funds for these projects. Homestead Realty reminds everyone parade step-off is 1 p.m.
