Q. What causes sinusitis? Sinusitis is usually a consequence of a viral infection that affects the lining of the sinus cavities. In some cases, bacteria or early fungus may be the cause of a sinus infection. Q. How is it treated? If it is a viral infection, it is usually treated conservatively using saline nasal spray, Nasal corticosteroids over-thecounter pain relievers such as Tylenol and short course of decongestants. However, if the infection lingers and does not respond to the above treatment regimen, a short course of antibiotics may be required. Q. If I am treated for sinusitis once, can I get it again? This depends on if there are any underlying factors that might exacerbate or make the person more prone for recurrent sinus infection. For example, people who have allergies or people who develop polyps in their nasal cavities, tend to have recurrent sinus infections despite proper medical treatment. Q. Is there a more permanent solution? In cases of recurrent sinus infections that seem to not respond well to conservative treatment measures and antibiotics, there are other options that aim to provide long-term relief from recurrent infections of the sinuses. For example, people with allergies can be treated with allergy shots. This helps remove one important driving factor for the recurrent infections. In other cases, surgical intervention might be required to remove any obstruction that prevents the sinuses from naturally draining. Sinus surgery has evolved whereby we aim to re-establish the natural sinus anatomy by removing any possible anatomical obstruction such as a polyp or an inflamed sinus opening to help reestablish the natural sinus anatomy. This , in turn, will help reduce the frequency of sinus infections.
