Letter from the President Congratulations on your wise selection of Northern Illinois University to prepare you for a bold future in your chosen field and in life. NIU orientation is your first step on a lifelong journey of discovery, filled with an abundance of information to empower you to be successful. As president of Northern Illinois University since last July, I can appreciate firsthand the quick learning curve required to be successful in a new environment. Just remember that all of us at NIU are dedicated to helping you succeed. Student career success is our core focus in becoming the most student-centered public research university. We are working hard to ensure that every experience you have at NIU prepares you to succeed in the rapidly changing, modern world that awaits you after you after graduation. You can see it in our ongoing efforts to make our general education more relevant than ever, retooling it to ensure that it provide you with the critical thinking skills, cultural literacy and other attributes that will help you stand out after graduation. It is also what is driving us to build “engaged learning” into as many courses as possible. That means we are striving to provide you with as many opportunities as possible to apply your classroom learning to real world problems, while still in school. Each semester, NIU students devise solutions for industry, work as consultants to businesses and help not-for-profit agencies better serve those in need. Many more learn about other cultures while studying abroad or carry out original research under the mentorship of world-class faculty. Internships, however, are the single-most important thing that predicts whether students will get a job after graduation—more important than grades, college or major. That’s where NIU offers a distinct advantage; we’re harnessing our nearly 200,000 alumni in the region to mentor students, provide valuable work experience and assist in their networking, transforming their NIU education into something extraordinary. I urge you to seek out these opportunities as often as possible while getting involved in extracurricular activities. Take advantage of the many available cultural opportunities by experiencing a concert, play or art exhibition. Challenge yourself physically by participating in one of the dozens of intramural sports leagues available. Explore a new interest through one of the more than 200 student clubs and organizations, or check out the countless opportunities for socializing and service that are part of the thriving Greek culture at NIU. Or take in a football, basketball or other athletic event. Not only are the Huskies coming off an undefeated regular season in football, they are also defending the longest home winning streak in the nation and can use your help to keep that streak alive. Regardless of what path you choose, seek out people different from you, and learn from them. There will be few better opportunities in your lifetime to do so. By completing orientation today, you have taken the first steps in a journey towards a bold future; make it an exciting and beneficial one.
Douglas D. Baker Douglas D. Baker President

Welcome Days, HUSKIES! By Stephen Haberkorn As a new or returning Northern Illinois University student just moving into your residence and preparing for a challenging academic year, your head is probably spinning right now. But please take a few minutes to read this article highlighting many of the exciting events going on during the next week around campus and DeKalb. In all the years of NIU’s existence, there has probably never been more going on during the opening week of the fall semester than this year. But these are all one time or once-a-year events, so you don’t want to miss any of them. The week begins with the Residence Hall Move-In Day on Friday, August 22 and the many Welcome Days events on campus throughout the first weekend. It continues on Thursday, August 28 with the first NIU home Football game at Huskie Stadium, along with all of the pre-game tailgate parties. The extended week concludes over the weekend of August 29, 30, and 31 with Corn Fest in Downtown DeKalb, one of the last remaining free music festivals in Illinois. One phrase you will hear a lot this week that you appreciate more as your college career continues is “free.” For the cash-strapped college student, a free event is the best kind of event. And free food is the best kind of food. Even if your meals are provided by residence hall dining services, you’ll enjoy the opportunity to stay fueled for your long, event-packed days with the many free food offerings throughout the week. Taco Bell may have copyrighted the term, “fourth meal,” but the practice has been common on college campuses forever.
NIU WELCOME DAYS
Jill Zambito, Director of Student Involvement & Leadership Development, says that there are many great reasons to attend the Welcome Days events that will be going on as you gear up for classes to start on Monday. “One, it’s a great way for them to explore the campus. The events that we’re holding are in various locations, so it allows the student to become a little bit more comfortable with the footprint of campus before classes start,” said Zambito. “It’s also the perfect way for them to meet other people who are like-minded, who want to be involved during their college career, so they’ll end up making friends during welcome days that they will have for life.” In addition, it’s a great way to meet NIU staff members and representatives from the community who will be at many of the events, too.

Friday, August 22: Move-in Day & Opening Events
After moving into your room and meeting and eating with your new floor-mates in your residence hall, while your family takes in the Family Resource Fair & Dinner, Welcome Days kick off with the Band Run from 5:45-6:25 p.m. This newer tradition begins on the east side of campus near Neptune Hall, as the NIU marching band leads a spirited procession through campus, picking up students, staff, and anyone who wishes to join in as you make your way to the Convocation Center. First-year commuter and off-campus students are encouraged to join at the Neptune Hall Sand Volleyball Court. Free Northern Pact t-shirts will be provided to all participants. When you arrive at the Convocation Center with your incoming class, you and your families will be welcomed into the NIU community by President Baker and other faculty and staff at the Huskie Family Welcome from 6:30-7:30 p.m. You will learn about NIU campus traditions and set the stage for a successful college career. Next, join thousands of new students at the annual RHA Block Party from 8:00-11:00 p.m. in Central Park, right in the middle off all the main residence halls on the west side of campus. There will be a D.J., free food, inflatable games, giveaways, and tons of things to do as you meet new friends in a fun, relaxed setting.
Saturday, August 23: Service Opportunity, Greek Life, Recreation & Dance Party Kick off your Saturday morning the right way by participating in the Saturday of Service from 9:00 a.m. until Noon. After meeting up in the Capitol Room of the Holmes Student Center for information and light refreshments, you will be transported to one of two volunteer projects where you will have to opportunity to serve the community in a meaningful way. If you’re interested in learning about what fraternities and sororities at NIU have to offer, then go to the Greek Life BBQ from 12:00-2:00 p.m. in the Martin Luther King Commons outside the Student Center (Chick Evans Field House in case of rain). Enjoy a hog roast and other food while meeting student leaders of NIU’s many Greek organizations in a casual setting. There will also be four informational sessions in the Capitol Room of the Student Center throughout the event. Go to Rec Fest from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center to play sports and games, compete in athletic challenges, try new fitness activities, win prizes, enjoy food and music and discover all that Campus Recreation has to offer. The Glow in the Dark Dance Party will drive your Saturday evening into high gear from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. in the Martin Luther King Commons (Chick Evans Field House if raining). Students who attend will receive t-shirts and glow sticks and be surrounded by lots of black lights to intensify the glow.
Sunday, August 24: Involvement/Volunteer Fair & President’s Picnic
Learn about the almost 300 student organizations on campus, as well as non-profit organizations in the local community at the Involvement & Volunteer Fair from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the Duke Ellington Ballroom inside the Holmes Student Center. Join President Doug Baker and the rest of the NIU community at the scenic East Lagoon for an afternoon of food, live music, and fun activities at the President’s Picnic from 3:00 until 7:30 p.m.
Monday, August 25 – First Day of Classes
No matter how tired you are from all the fun activities going on this week, remember why you are here and go to your classes! That is the best way to ensure that you can come back next year and join in all of the fun again (either as a returning student or an alum).

Welcome Days, HUSKIES! FOOTBALL HOME OPENER Thursday, August 28 The Northern Illinois Huskies Football team will defend their NCAA-longest twenty-six game home winning streak against Presbyterian College at Huskie Stadium Thursday at 6:00 p.m. NIU students get into all home football games for free with a valid NIU OneCard. Make sure that you get your OneCard as soon as possible so that you are not left out. The OneCard office is next to TCF Bank in the Holmes Student Center. If you already have your OneCard, you might want to check to see that it’s still valid just to be on the safe side. The home opener will be a Red Out, meaning fans should wear all red attire to the game to help create an exciting atmosphere. An ESPN crew will be there to cover the game. “Students who have been at NIU have never seen the team lose at Huskie Stadium, so you don’t want to be one of the students who are here when they do. Come out in full force, have the student section packed out, and keep the win streak going,” said Tim Rice, Assistant Athletic Director for Development. In addition to the Huskies on-field success, the people responsible for the gameday experience at Huskie Stadium have never been more excited for a season to begin, as they will be adding more to the fan experience than ever before.
Pre-game Tailgating
Students will have two different pre-game tailgating events they can attend, in addition to all of the other private and group tailgate parties that will be going on all day on the East side of the stadium and in the various tailgate lots near the stadium. From 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., students can attend the “We are Huskies” Tailgate in Central Park (Dining Halls in case of rain). Enjoy a great tailgate-style dinner in a relaxed atmosphere with Athletics Director, Sean Frazier, the NIU Marching Band, Victor E. Huskie, the spirit squad, and members of the NIU community. New this year, the NIU official pre-game tailgate called “The Yard” will be unveiled. The Yard will take up half of the west lawn along Stadium Drive West., across from the soccer field and will be open to everyone. In the case of rain, the activities will be moved to the Convocation Center. The Yard party will start two-and-a-half hours before kick-off and close approximately thirty minutes before kick-off. There will be live music, food vendors, a beer garden, several large flat screen televisions to check out games from around the country, a kids zone with bounce houses, a climbing wall, and face painting, and opportunities to meet student athletes from other NIU sports teams. They’re also going to have a varsity club tent and a donor tent on the site. In addition to The Yard and some new tailgate lots outside the stadium, there is going to be a whole new fan atmosphere this year inside the stadium as well for NIU football games. They will sell out the Yordon Center Terrace with tented suites for games. Coach Novak’s old office is being renovated to become “The Coach’s Club.” They have a new area outside of the sky boxes called the “Sky Club” that is already completely sold out.
The student fan group, the Red Riot, is also going to be amped up and re-structured this year, with more involvement by the athletic department. Students who are members will now get priority points through the Huskie Athletic Fund, so you get into the system as a donor and supporter.
2014 Back to School Edition | Welcome Back | 9
Students interested in joining the Red Riot can call (815) 753-1343 or visit their website at niuhuskies.com/trads/niured-riot.html Another aspect of the fan experience that will be improved this year is the concessions inside the stadium. They hired Sodexo to re-create all of the concessions inside the stadium in order to take them to the next level. They also just hired Learfield Sports to manage a lot of the promotions, advertising, and video board productions for the games. “We’ve got a whole new staff and a whole new look as far as game day,” said Tim Rice, Assistant Athletic Director for Development. “We’re really focused on creating a more exciting and welcoming fan experience.” Morris White, Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing & Game Experience, said that students should expect a good time when they attend athletic events and he stressed the importance of students showing up and getting behind the Huskie athletic teams. “Be involved and be engaging at all of our home athletic events, because we need you to be there to create the atmosphere that we want and to have the best environment in the MAC Conference,” said White. “To be able to play in front of a tremendous crowd that is rooting for you really helps those student athletes out on the field and on the courts. And giving your support is certainly one of the best social things you can do as a college student by going to athletic events, developing friendships with people who like the same games.” In conjunction with Corn Fest, it will be Agriculture Day at the Huskies home opener. The team will wear specialedition jerseys that will be on auction August 8 - September 5th to benefit Corn Fest designated charities (the Canaday Family, Boy Scout Troop 33, and the Voluntary Action Center). You can bid on the jerseys at cornfest.com.
Cor n Fest Friday, August 29 – Sunday, August 31 To finish out an exciting, fun-filled week, the 36th annual Corn Fest will take place in Downtown DeKalb the last weekend of August. Corn Fest is one of the last remaining free music festivals in Illinois. With forty-to-fifty thousand visitors over a three-day period, many people associate DeKalb with Corn Fest. In addition, a large number of NIU alums come back every year for Corn Fest. “It’s really something that shouldn’t be missed. It definitely something you want to experience if you’re new here. It’s one of the big draws,” said Lisa Angel, Corn Fest Chairperson. Corn Fest includes multiple music and event stages, food vendors, carnival rides, an auto show, and more. To get to Corn Fest, students on campus can either walk to Downtown DeKalb or jump on the Huskie Bus #7 at the Holmes Student Center. Besides the free corn boil on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (get there early), the most popular attraction at Corn Fest is the musical entertainment on the Main Sound Stage. There is something for everyone during the three-day event, with musical acts including Beatles cover band American English, Guitar Band Audiodrive, Big Daddy Woo Woo’s Funk Revival, popular regional bands like Seventh Heaven and High Infidelity, and even the Chicago Six, a band composed of Bears greats from the 1985 Super Bowl champions. It costs $5 per day to enter the family-friendly Sound Stage area, which includes a beer garden for patrons over 21. There is a free music listening area, but admission to the Sound Stage will allow you to get right up to the stage. “Here’s the great thing – you could actually come down to Corn Fest, eat free corn at the corn boil, go listen to music, and not pay a thing. It’s a student’s dream – to have something that you’re not paying a lot of money to go do,” said Angel. Reasonably-priced food and beverages is also provided by vendors at the festival. “We don’t try to gouge people. We try to make it affordable for everybody, especially college students,” added Angel. There is also a Cornhole (bags) tournament at Corn Fest on Saturday at noon (on-site registration begins at 11 a.m.). Two-player teams compete for $400 in prize money. The entry fee is $30 per team. Registration forms are available at cornfest.com. Finally, if you’re interested in learning about the rich history of DeKalb, you can take a free bus tour during Corn Fest. Tours will take place every two hours on Saturday and Sunday and leave from the corner of 4th and Grove Streets. To find out more about Corn Fest and see a complete schedule of events, you can visit their website at www.cornfest.com or like them at DeKalb Corn Fest on Facebook.

A “Communive
DeKalb:
rsity” Town
By Stephen Haberkorn Bill Nicklas, Vice President of Operations and Community Relations at Northern Illinois University, first remembers using the term, “Communiversity,” in the aftermath of the February, 2008 tragedy at NIU. At that time, Nicklas was serving as the Sycamore City Manager, and he attended meetings on campus along with other community leaders to discuss how they could best demonstrate their support for the university. “We talked about how we could speak with one voice about the unifying spirit we felt existed between the university and local community. The word, communiversity, sort of flowed from that. It seemed like a word that expressed the interests that we had in pulling together for the common purpose at that time,” said Nicklas. In response to those meetings and others like them, the DeKalb and Sycamore Chambers of Commerce and the DeKalb County Community Foundation started a memorial fund to remember the February 14th victims. Businesses around town displayed the “Forward, Together, Forward” slogan on marquees to show solidarity. A group called “Communiversity Cares” was formed to gather donations and plan remembrance events. And the “Huskies on Parade” project was born, distributing uniquely-decorated huskie statues throughout DeKalb and Sycamore to demonstrate the connection between the university and the community. The first time Matt Duffy came across the term, communiversity, it was on the phonebook. When he worked at the Daily Chronicle they used the word for the title of the university and community phonebook they published every year. Back when most people still used paper phonebooks, you could find a copy of the Communiversity Phonebook in every office at NIU. “I heard it used for various other things throughout the years, but not as much as it’s been used the last few years, for sure,” said Duffy, who is now the Executive Director of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce. The phone book wasn’t the only local publication to use “communiversity” in its title over the years. In 2013, DeKalb native Cindy Crawford tweeted a picture of the first magazine cover that she appeared on – the “DeKalb Nite Weekly” from November 3, 1982. Beneath the name of the magazine appears the subtitle, “Communiversity Issue: ‘Reaching DeKalb, Sycamore & NIU readers.’”
2014 Back to School Edition | Welcome Back | 21
More recent uses of the word have included the 2006 DeKalb sesquicentennial mural, titled “Communiversity,” the Communiversity Incident Management Team, the “Communiversity in Bloom” planters , and the NIU Communiversity Gardens. In “DeKalb: City Center,” published by the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce as a 2013 update to the Downtown Revitalization Plan, the term “Communiversity Commons” is used to label the “transition zone,” the approximately one-thousand-foot-long area along Lincoln Highway between Downtown DeKalb and the NIU Campus. This area includes the bridge over the Kishwaukee River, and itself serves as a bridge between the campus and the community. Using this terminology for that stretch of real estate, however, confuses the entire concept of the communiversity. “The concept of the communiversity is that the university and the community are intertwined. There’s not a separation like, ‘Ok, you’re in university territory, or now you’re in the community.’ The students are a big part of the community and the community is a big part of the student experience. When students come to this area, they’re not just coming to Northern Illinois University, but they’re coming to DeKalb and the surrounding community,” said Duffy. Just as in the word communiversity, itself, you cannot separate the community from the university. If you were to use a Venn diagram to figuratively show the intersection of the University and the local community, the overlap would be nearly all-encompassing, like the sun and moon becoming almost one during an eclipse. NIU students live both on campus and in the community. NIU students work, shop, volunteer, and attend events both on campus and in the community. Community members take classes, work, volunteer, and attend athletic and cultural events on campus. The university provides both customers and employees to the local businesses, and the local businesses provide goods and services and employment opportunities to the students. It is really quite difficult to identify elements within the lives of most students and community members that are strictly “university” or solely “community.” Northern Illinois University was begun in 1895 to be a regional institution serving the entire Northern Illinois region. In that sense, the communiversity extends far beyond DeKalb County, all the way to Lake Michigan to the east, west to the Mississippi, and north to the Wisconsin border.
“Without our population, our commerce, our sons and daughters attending the university, there wouldn’t be a university,” said Nicklas. “The two are very dependent on each other. There is truly a symbiotic relationship. The whole is greater than the parts. If Northern isn’t shining, then there is a shadow over the area. And if the area around Northern is not shining, there is an impact on the enrollment and retention of students at NIU.” The City of DeKalb web site says that “the DeKalb/ NIU area is a ‘Communiversity,’ which is a unique environment that complements and enhances the lifestyle of DeKalb residents and visitors.” The benefits of having a major regional university located in DeKalb are obvious. As the largest employer and biggest population draw, Northern Illinois University puts a lot of money into the pockets of local residents and businesses and enriches the area with diversity as people move into the area and visit from all over the world. The university also enhances the cultural, educational, and recreational offerings available to the general population in DeKalb County and the surrounding vicinity. People in the area can catch Division I sporting events, including the nationally-prominent NIU football team. They can attend world-class concerts, shows, and conferences at the NIU Convocation Center. They can experience current and future music and theater stars performing in both intimate and large venues around campus and in the surrounding community. Matt Duffy also pointed out some other perks NIU provides the local business community. “You have amenities that you wouldn’t have if you weren’t in a university town. There’s also different research and things like that going on. The Center for
22 | Welcome Back | 2014 Back to School 22Edition | Welcome Back | 2013 Back to School Edition Government Studies is actually located in Downtown DeKalb. That’s a part of Downtown DeKalb that’s a huge asset,” said Duffy. The communiversity relationship between NIU and the local area is not all one-sided, though. Those athletic, music, and theater programs at NIU wouldn’t succeed nearly as well without the support of the local community. Who wants to perform in front of an empty room or unenthusiastic audience? And where would the football program be without the community buy-in they’ve received, even during the down years. That community support has been crucial, as all the other athletic programs at NIU depend on the economic success of the football program. And as football has succeeded, it has increased the exposure and, thus, enrollment at NIU. There is a lot of history and things to do around the area that the community provides for the student base. There’s also the accessibility of internships, job shadowing, partnership experiences, and volunteer opportunities. When students attend the university, they usually either work or do an internship. They may also be involved in athletics, volunteer groups, fraternities or sororities. “Whatever the case may be, by engaging the community it also prepares them for the next stage of their life when they graduate and go into the workforce, where it’s almost a way of life for them. Now, they’re used to branching out and it’s an easy transition, versus, ‘I only dealt with people in my age group who were part of the university,’” said Duffy. Jacqueline Gray, a child development major from Rockford, has been heavily involved in the community since the moment she first set foot on campus. Her freshman year, Gray was in the initial group of Huskies Service Scholars, a selective program which requires three hundred hours of community service during the year in exchange for a partial tuition waiver. Gray has led a group for NIU Cares Day every year, which also connects the university and the community by sending teams out to meet the needs of people in the area. Over the years, they’ve worked with children at the Hope Haven homeless shelter and done spring cleaning at the DeKalb Municipal Park building, in addition to doing yard work for the elderly. Recently, she started volunteering at the Salvation Army food pantry. Gray has also interacted with the community through her job. Her first job was on campus at NIU Campus Child Care, which mostly serves the children of NIU students and faculty. However, last summer she started working at Children’s Learning Center, where the majority of the clients are from the DeKalb community. “I feel like being involved in the community just makes for a richer college experience,” said Gray. “The DeKalb community is so diverse and there’s so much that can be learned from it. I found that especially true with my job at Children’s Learning Center.
2014 Back to School Edition | Welcome Back | 23 I’m able to put the skills I’m learning in class into practice and strengthen them. And I’m getting first-hand experience before my internship working with and communicating with families, which is not something I would get if I just stayed on campus.” As Northern Illinois University and the surrounding community move forward, there appears to be a renewed focus on both sides to strengthen the relationship and work together more. There are a number of different projects, taskforces, and committees that have taken place recently or are ongoing, such as the Bold Futures Workshops initiated by NIU for the purpose of long-term community planning, and the Communiversity Incident Management Team, which is a partnership between the City of DeKalb Fire Department, the NIU Department of Public Safety, and the NIU Convocation Center. “I don’t think [the relationship’s] ever been pushed aside. I just think lately it’s been more in the forefront,” said Duffy. “There’s always been a tie between the two for some obvious reasons, but there’s been more of an effort … maybe it’s because there are new parties and new positions that are saying, ‘How can we do more together to get both sides to benefit?’” The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce is trying to fill the role of bridge between the two sides by connecting students and businesses to the resources and opportunities both are looking for, including internship and volunteer opportunities or just things for student to do on the weekends. “Whether it’s connecting the community with the businesses, the businesses with each other, the students with the businesses, whatever the case may be, there’s a lot of opportunity out there. Sometimes, it’s like, ‘What is missing?’ Is it really missing or just that people are not looking in the right place?” said Duffy. Bill Nicklas has the sense that there are still more opportunities for the university to collaborate with local community organizations and individuals, and finding out what those are is part of an ongoing dialogue. He feels that it all boils down to relationships between the people who make the policies at the university and in the local government and those at the operational level who carry them out – whether those policies are related to public safety, economic growth, academic advancement, or individuals’ well-being. “Relationships, whether between friends, colleagues, working partners, or fellow professionals, it doesn’t matter, you have to work at them,” said Nicklas. “You have to have frequent conversation. You have to listen and learn from each other. You have to understand that sometimes there are differing pressures on one or the other. The challenge is growing the relationships – always trying to make them better, stronger, and more effective on behalf of our customers, which are our students, and the local businesses, and the citizens as well.”
