Fall is my favorite time of the year! The air cools, and the skies range from crisp, clear blue to that silky gray overcast that plays oh, so nicely off the oranges and golds in the trees. It also is a great time to get out of your comfort zone on the couch and take a drive somewhere new – not too far, but maybe off the beaten path – and discover the wonderful places that surround us in northern Illinois! Consider this edition of Neighborhood Tourist a jumping off point for your autumn adventure. We’ve got fabulous fall events, featuring tasty food, refreshing drinks, and Halloween fun. There are family friendly destinations across the region, from pumpkin farms to science museums, family-friendly theater and more! Like to hike? Catch the best of Illinois fall color at a host of great destinations, from challenging treks to casual walks. Or if you’re looking for something more challenging, consider a themed fall 5k, and fill your desire for physical accomplishment, combined with a charitable cause and a costume to boot!
4
And if you are out to spend a whole day away, discover DeKalb! It’s the biannual destination of many a football fan, as the city plays host alternate years to the State High School Football Championships…but while you’re there, take in all the city has to offer – great food, fun bars, history, music and theater, and some kitchy shopping as well! The great Lyle Lovett graces the stage in Joliet this season, and we chat with him about his music and career. Also, there’s a ghost hunters expo in Countryside, a Day of the Dead celebration in Aurora, and an array of shows on stage at the historic Sandwich Opera House. However you choose to spend your season, we hope you’ll find try something new, and nearby to experience…right here in northern Illinois! Thanks for reading.

Step out this season and experience all that northern Illinois has to offer, along some beautiful outdoor trails. Compiled BY KELSEY O’CONNOR
ILLINOIS & MICHIGAN CANAL AND TRAIL, LOCKPORT History buffs and nature lovers alike will enjoy a stroll along the I&M Canal Trail. The almost 80-mile trail follows the banks of the I&M canal, an old canal towpath that runs from Lasalle to Lemont. The LaSalle trailhead is located near a historic canal lock and hikers will find markers explaining the history of the canal at nearly every mile of the trail. You’ll also pass by several notable local sites, such as the Marseille’s railroad depot, Joliet Iron Works Historic Site,
Lemont’s limestone quarries, the M. J. Hogan Grain Elevator, and several state parks.
MORAINE HILLS STATE PARK, MCHENRY With an abundance of wildlife and rare plants, Moraine Hills State Park is a lush, ecological treasure situated by the Fox River. The park, named for the geological phenomena where an accumulation of boulders is left by a glacier, is intertwined with 10 miles of trails that separated into four unique routes. The 3.7-mile Lake Defiance Trail will take hikers
on a scenic route around the 48-acre lake. One of the few glacial lakes in the state that’s still largely undeveloped, Lake Defiance is a pristine place to spot the wide array of creatures that live in the wetlands.
WAUPONSEE GLACIAL TRAIL, JOLIET Escape your urban surroundings on the 22-mile stretch of trail that will take you back in time. Named for a glacial lake that once encompassed the area thousands of years ago,

today’s visitors can take in sweeping views of the open prairie and farmland. The route follows the path of two former railroad lines and passes through several historically significant local areas. Begin near the I-80 overpass in Joliet and quickly leave civilization behind as you stroll by vast fields of corn, a herd of bison, and across a trestle bridge from 1902.
DICK YOUNG FOREST PRESERVE, BATAVIA With stretches of prairie,
wetlands and woodlands, this ecologically complex park is considered a window into the origins of the region’s landscape. This has caused a rich diversity of flora and fauna to thrive within the park. The Nelson Lake Marsh on the east side of the preserve lies in a depression caused by glacial ice that existed on the site millenia ago. Explore all the area has to offer on the intertwining trail system. Nelson Lake Trail is an easy 2.57 miles of mowed trail that circles the marsh. Hikers will enjoy the site’s peaceful beauty, everchanging surroundings, and opportunities to spot rare and endangered creatures.
BUFFALO ROCK STATE PARK, OTTAWA This majestic park is perched on a bluff that was once an island in the Illinois River.
Hikers exploring the 298acre park can follow the River Bluff Trail. The trail runs high along the bluffs with two observation decks that offer sweeping views of the riverbed below. The 2.6 mile loop is a peaceful and well-maintained gravel path that’s appropriate for hikers of all ability levels. Observant visitors might even spot the buffalo that lives in the park.
CASTLE ROCK STATE PARK, OREGON Nestled on the banks of Rock River, this rugged park features rock formations, ravines and sandstone bluffs. Six miles of marked hiking trails wind through the park, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery and catch glimpses of local wildlife. One good route is the Castle Rock North Trail, a moderate 3.5 mile loop. Changes in
elevation can make the route slightly rigourous for novice hikers. But your effort will be rewarded with views of beautiful wildflowers and open ranges.
SAW WEE KEE PARK, OSWEGO This extensive natural area comprises 134 scenic acres with a plethora of wildlife, including deer and bald eagles. The park’s compact trail system meanders through out the hilly terrain. One popular trail is the Saw Wee Kee Park Trail that skirts the Fox River for 5.8 miles. Though the trail is considered moderate, hikers should be ready for the rugged terrain. The curvy dirt trail has plenty of ups and downs, rocks and roots, making it popular with mountain bikers.

specimens have been carefully sought out from around the world to represent more than 40 countries within the northern temperate time zone. While the arboretum is beautiful at any time of year, one of the best times to visit is in autumn. Each year, the arboretum’s impressive plant collection erupts into a glorious display of fall colors. Guests can stroll beneath the tree canopies and enjoy the crisp autumn air while learning about native flora and fauna.
STARVED ROCK STATE PARK 2668 E. 875th Rd., Oglesby (815) 667-4726 | starvedrockstatepark.org It may seem like a no-brainer, this everpopulaar spot for hiking and camping… but it always pleases! Starved Rock State Park is just 90 miles from Chicago, but once you’re there it feels like a world away. Hiking along the 13 miles of trails,
you’ll become completely immersed in the rugged, untamed landscape of the park. Along the way, you’ll see towering trees, native wildlife, and sandstone bluffs and canyons that were formed from thousands of years of melting glaciers. While many people visit in the spring for peak waterfall viewing, the area truly shines in the fall. October is the busiest time of year for the park, and for good reason. Hikers flock to the area to see the spectacular shades of fall foliage. Starved Rock celebrates all the beautiful bounty of the season during the annual Fall Colors Weekend on Oct. 21 and 22. Guides take hikers up overlooks and through canyons in search of the best autumn hues, while explaining the history and geology of the park. There are about two to four guided hikes each day, leaving from the Starved Rock Visitor Center at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
CHICAGO BOTANIC GARDEN 1000 Lake Cook Rd., Glencoe (847) 835-5440 | chicagobotanic.org Since opening more than 40 years
ago, the Chicago Botanic Garden has matured from a scenic spot to visit into a renowned conservation center. It stretches over 385 acres, comprised of nine islands, six miles of shoreline, and 27 distinct gardens, each with their own unique focus. The collection draws more than one million visitors annually, making it the second most-visited botanic garden of its size in the country. Many of these visitors come in the fall, when the garden’s bountiful display is truly a sight to see. The Garden transforms from a lush green oasis to an awe- inspiring display of autumnal beauty. “We have the plants best adapted to the Chicago area, and because of that, their fall colors are spectacular,”says Boyce Tankersley, director of living plant documentation. “The Garden has a collection that’s close to 12,000 types of plants with amazing fall color.”

WHY WAIT
— for the —
WEEKEND?
Located less than two hours from Chicago, it’s hard to believe that stunning bluff views, majestic canyons and seasonal waterfalls are waiting for you to explore their beauty. All of this and historic Starved Rock Lodge are nestled within Starved Rock State Park located near Utica, Illinois.
Why wait for the weekend? Escape to Starved Rock. Book a midweek getaway and you’ll enjoy a greater sense of peace and quiet than you would on the weekends. Kick back and unwind in the indoor pool, take a trolley tour or enjoy outdoor dining on the Veranda. That’s only the beginning of fun things to do at Starved Rock Lodge & State Park. Built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, historic Starved Rock Lodge sits high atop a bluff overlooking the scenic Illinois River. Nestled in the heart of Starved Rock State Park, the past is powerfully present in the warm, old fashioned hospitality that has never gone out of style. It’s been the hallmark of this charming destination since guests first stepped through the doors 80 years ago. The ambiance of yesteryear is still present in the Lodge and cabins. Outdoor adventure awaits with a hike to the top of the Rock being first on the list of fun things to do. Add a river cruise aboard the Eagle 1 with lunch or dinner included in your ticket price. Hike the trails on your own or go with an experienced guide. Breathe in the change of seasons. The October spectacle of Mother Nature is just around the corner with Autumn on the River tours along with Fall Colors Trolley Tours.

ootball teams across the state are hoping for a trip to NIU for the State Championships. But you can get there easily, and score great food, drink and fun when you arrive! The chances are unlikely that there will be any leftover Thanksgiving turkey to piece together a sandwich or two on the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving. That’s cool. Most will be tired of turkey by the time the IHSA football state championships arrive at Northern Illinois University’s Huskie Stadium on Nov. 29-30. And with lots of great places to eat in DeKalb, who needs a leftover turkey sandwich anyway? There are also plenty of things to see in addition to exciting football games, places to be entertained and shop and there are always things on the campus of Northern Illinois University to check out. “Our staff is in the stadium from sun up to sun down, so we are probably better off deferring to the teams and fans on their favorites,” says Matt Troha, assistant executive director for the IHSA. “With that said, as a whole, we have heard really good things about the fan experience in DeKalb, whether that be restaurants, lodging or beyond. The consensus is that the community and area as a whole have been incredibly welcoming.”
Each team that’s playing in a state title game will have its own tent on the west side of the Huskie Stadium as part of Spirit Zone, the designated tailgating experience for fans. Consider this the unofficial headquarters to meet fellow alumni, students, players, band members, mascots, families and more before the big game and to celebrate victory. No alcohol is permitted, but guests are welcome to bring grills to prepare food or have food delivered. In addition, The DeKalb County Convention and Visitors Bureau will have a main tent loaded with info and hospitality, with complimentary visitors guides, coupon books, maps and more of the DeKalb area, along with the comforts of heating, couches, TVs, fun games, complimentary hot chocolate, coffee and popcorn and much more. When it’s time for some serious food and libations, you don’t have to drift too far from Huskie Stadium. Molly’s Eatery & Drinkery, 1000 W. Lincoln Hwy., remains a popular NIU tradition. It’ll certainly draw a crowd this weekend and if you’ve brought a large group it can accommodate. Just remember, Molly’s has been in its new location since 2012 so if you’re an NIU alum and it feels like you haven’t been there before, you probably haven’t, and just need to munch on some Macho Nachos and enjoy a cold beer.

The Hometown Sports Bar & Grill, 241 E. Lincoln Hwy., has a big menu and hometown happy hour specials from 4 to 6 p.m. including a fish fry on Fridays and apple pie shots on Saturdays.
Where We Live
With over 110 craft beers and its world famous Cajun fried potato salad, Fatty’s Pub & Grille, 1312 W. Lincoln Hwy. has been happily serving black angus char-grilled burgers, including the Ryne Sandburger, and lot, lot more since 1998.

Microbrew connoisseurs might want to find sometime to visit the Forge Brewhouse, 216 N. 6th St., which has a public taproom with 13 beers on tap and another for its popular root beer. While folks are coming to DeKalb to watch championship football, many will be interested in watching the bigger boys play on Saturday. With Ohio State-Michigan and AlabamaAuburn on the schedule that day as well as IllinoisNorthwestern and Notre Dame-Stanford, where do you
go? Certainly any of the bars and grills in DeKalb will have plenty of TVs to keep fans pleased. Troha acknowledged that the IHSA staff that works state football has stayed at Red Roof Inn & Suites and holds meetings with its head officials and TV crew on Thursday night there. “Fatty’s Pub is right next door, so that’s become a tradition of sorts for us to have our second Thanksgiving dinner there,” he says. “The food is always great and they have been accommodating by opening on the holiday to welcome the fans coming to town for the Class 1A state title game the next morning. Seeing the high school fans in there on Thursday night rearing to go helps set the tone for the weekend for me.” Those looking for stuff to do during down time, can visit one of the last bastions of the old neighborhood and mall arcades at Star Worlds, 1234 E. Lincoln Hwy. It offers a rotating mix of modern and classic games, taking patrons all the
way back to the’80s without the need of a Hot Tub Time Machine. Plus, this familyfriendly destination is open until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. You don’t have to be a Lebowski to kill some time by knocking down pins like a Hall of Fame fullback plows over linebackers at Mardi Gras Lanes, 1730 Sycamore Rd. For disc golf aficionados looking to tackle a new course (weather permitting), there’s Prairie Park, 401Clifford Dr., which is home to a nine-hole course and also has a walking trail and other amenities to enjoy the outdoors at no cost. History buffs can checkout the Ellwood House Museum, 509 N. First St. The mansion was originally built for barbed wire entrepreneur Isaac Ellwood. Ever wonder why DeKalb High School is the Barbs? It’s definitely not because of Streisand. As for shopping, DeKalb boasts some unique stores. Antique Treasures, 218. E. Lincoln Hwy. specializes in a variety of antique and vintage
items and Green Tangerine Records, 838 W. Lincoln Hwy., has a great assortment of vintage records and other pop culture items. In nearby Sycamore, there’s Sweet Earth, the city’s only boutique department store, which has a lot of cool gift ideas, right in the heart of downtown. For more on these ideas and others, Brad Hoey, special projects coordinator, says NIU has partnered with the DeKalb County Convention and Visitors Bureau on an online fan guide for its Homecoming that also serves as a wonderful guide for IHSA football fans. The guide includes lists of various local attractions, events and accommodations and should serve as a fine complement to this story. This year marks the fourth time that DeKalb and NIU has had the pleasure of hosting this two-day, eightgame unforgettable event. It continues to alternate between DeKalb and Champaign, visiting DeKalb during oddnumbered years that will continue through 2021.

Constructed in 1878, the building originally housed city government offices on the first floor. The Opera House took residence on the second floor showcasing traveling troupes, recitals and community activities. By World War II, many of the activities held at the Opera House took place at other facilities and the functions of city government, including the police and fire departments, were moved to separate facilities. After years of sitting dormant, the Sandwich Opera House’s second act took place in the 1980s when the community rallied for the building to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They also sought extensive restorations to bring the building back to its original glory. Wall and ceiling stenciling was reproduced. New lighting and sound equipment were integrated into the historic design of the theater. The project also included an addition to house dressing rooms, a theatre workshop and storage.

MEET THE BAND
LYLE IN LOVE WITH
Crossover crooner Lyle Lovett to grace Joliet stage in October By Alan Sculley
T
his fall, Lyle Lovett is following up a summer tour of the United States with another run of dates. This means he gets to experience one of his favorite aspects of being a musician on a nightly basis.
Arts & Entertainment
“I just appreciate them so much,” Lovett says of his touring musicians, which over the years he has deployed in various configurations from a small acoustic combo up to his Large Band, which has had as many as 16 members. “I mean, nothing gives me a greater thrill in my musical life than to get to stand in the middle of them and listen to them. I get to do that every night. So just to stand there and listen to them think, that’s really what it amounts to, it’s just fun.”
30
But it’s been some time since
he’s had that experience in the studio. That’s because Lovett has gone seven years since he last released a studio album. But an end to the drought of new Lovett music is on the horizon, as he plans to enter the studio in November to make a new album. Because “Release Me” and 2009’s “Natural Forces” were made up mostly of songs written by Lovett’s favorite artists, this will be his first album of primarily original songs since his ninth album, the 2007 release, “It’s Not Big It’s Large.” Lovett says he has been writing songs all along since he recorded “Release Me,” which makes sense for an artist who not only enjoys the creative process, but has established himself as one of the most literate and perceptive
songwriters going. “I’ve had some of these songs for some time. Some of them are newer than others,” Lovett says. “Everything’s (been written) since ‘Release Me.’ I’m still trying to figure out exactly which songs will end up on the (new) record.” The long gap between albums has partly been a function of the titanic changes that have occurred in the music industry since downloading and streaming became primary ways people acquire music. “Release Me” marked the end of the record deal Lovett signed with MCA/Curb Records (and its parent company, Universal) before releasing his self-titled debut album in 1986. Lovett stepped back to take stock of how the music industry was

changing before deciding how he would move forward with releasing new music. Finally, last November Lovett signed with Verve Records, a label also owned by Universal, and his familiarity with the parent company played a big role in Lovett’s decision. “I always worked more closely with the MCA side of the record deal than Curb. I mean, Curb was kind of a silent partner, so whenever I dealt with the record company, it was always with the folks at MCA, first MCA Nashville, then MCA Los Angeles, and when they (Universal) shut down MCA Los Angeles in 2003, I ended up on Lost Highway Records out of Nashville. So it was always a Universal label I dealt with. So I like the company. They administer my publishing as well. I’ve been with two publishing companies over the years, Criterion Music and PolyGram, and Universal bought both of those publishing companies. So I have a relationship with Universal anyway. And Danny Bennett was running Verve when I signed the deal. And I liked him a lot. So I felt really at home being back with a Universal label. So that was sort of my thought process. Danny’s gone now, but I’m still excited about working with them and excited about recording in November.” When recording sessions begin, Lovett will approach the new album with the same goal that’s behind which songs he chooses to perform at each concert and how the songs are arranged for live performance. “Most of the players that I am on stage with are the same players I’ll record with,” Lovett says. “My hope is to be able to select songs that will, in the same way that I try to organize the live show, select songs for the recording that will let the audience know this is what you could expect if you come to see us live. “By the end of the show, I’d like everyone in the audience to feel as NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST

though they’ve gotten to know everybody on stage,” he says. “So that’s really how the arrangements, the live arrangements come from that. It really is a matter of thinking of ways to expand a song or take a song in a direction that would allow someone in the band to be featured. So we might expand some of the solos and include instruments and solo sections that might not be on the recording. It’s a way to say ‘Hey, check this guy out because he’s really good.’” Lovett may not yet have settled on the songs that will go on his next album. But he can say one thing with some certainty. There won’t be a unifying concept to the songs.
CATCH
LYLE LOVETT ON STAGE
At the historic Rialto Theater in Joliet on
October 13.
“The theme really is just my life experience,” Lovett says. “With just about every song I’ve recorded, I can point to something I’ve experienced, either gone through or something that I observed or happened that was real. And then writing about it is a great way to remember that, really, that
experience. Writing about it, in a personal way, for me, it helps me to appreciate some of the things I’ve gotten to live through.” One recent event that figures to filter into the new album is Lovett’s 2017 marriage to long-time girlfriend April Kimbrell. Lovett says he’s enjoying married life, but didn’t get specific about any songs that relate to that change in his life. “You know, everything works its way into your songs,” he says. On a musical level, Lovett says fans can expect the album to feature the kind of diversity that has characterized his previous albums – and the musical range of his live shows. That means the new songs could incorporate any number of styles, including country, soul, blues, bluegrass, rock or horn-accented swing and jazz. Lovett says he expects to perform a few new songs during his shows this fall, which will feature
his acoustic group. He will have some flexibility in how songs new and old are performed – although there is a limit to how far Lovett and the group will go in reinterpreting the songs. “We always try to pay homage to the recorded arrangements. (But) I’ve never asked the guys to play solos note for note the way they are on the recordings,” Lovett says. “So every night we surprise one another. They certainly surprise me. There’s a lot of (musical) conversation going on. When musicians are that talented, they react to one another so quickly, so that makes it fun, too. The songs aren’t performed exactly the same (night to night), and so you get a sense for who’s sort of, who’s willing to go out on a limb or who might feel really good on a certain night and be leading us onto the creative limb before it breaks off. It’s fun to try things and have that in-the-moment quality on stage every night.

They come to make memories, said Barb Leschke, an event coordinator and office manager at the farm. “It’s just good clean family fun,” she said. “There are a lot of people that never really get to experience the country. There’s so much to offer in McHenry County.”
