Turn your deck into a modern farmhouseinspired outdoor retreat Aars knew she wanted composite decking for her backyard renovation, as the engineered product is designed to sidestep issues associated with moisture absorption, one of the most common reasons wood products will deteriorate. Composite deck boards are also available with a protective cap, which means they provide increased resistance to fading, staining and scratching. But upon initial research, Aars realized not just any composite decking material would do. It also needed to emulate the character and richness of a natural wood grain; a quality Aars admired and associated with the modern farmhouse style.

(BPT) - When DIY maven Allison Aars purchased a ramshackle Texas farmhouse on a leap of faith, she knew her work was cut out for her. Determined to reveal the full potential of her historic farmhouse, Aars spent several years transforming her family’s home and bringing it to its current designation, The Festive Farmhouse. When her home improvement efforts shifted to the barren pasture behind her family’s home, Aars knew she wanted to create a modern farmhouse-inspired outdoor retreat for her family to enjoy. Characterized by its neutral color

scheme and natural materials and textures, the modern farmhouse style combines the clean lines of contemporary design with the cozy farmhouse aesthetic to evoke feelings of warmth and comfort. Given the emphasis on achieving a modern farmhouse aesthetic, it was hard for Aars to ignore the appeal of a wood deck. But there was one problem. While wood deck boards are sought-after for their warmth and charm, like all wood products, they tend to deteriorate in outdoor applications. In fact, Aars’ very first farmhouse purchase was a pair of darling wood Ad-

irondack chairs. Much to her disbelief, the chairs disintegrated after just a few months of sitting in the pasture behind the farmhouse.

To bring her modern farmhouse inspired vision to life, Aars selected Infinity I-Series capped bamboo-plastic composite decking from Fortress Building Products. The outdoor building products manufacturer employs a dual embossing technique on its composite offerings to reveal realistic grain patterns and textures. To visually distinguish the deck boards against the white of her home’s exterior, Aars opted for a luxurious russet-almond color. The vibrant hue also provides distinction against the surrounding Texas dirt and pea gravel. With its unyielding qualities, enhanced wood grain textures and rich, earth-tone color palette, Aars’ modern farmhouse-inspired deck will provide timeless style for years to come.

Having personally experienced the effects of Texas’ severe wind, rain and sun on wood products, Aars turned to composite decking to bring performance and lasting style 2. Such performance capabilities provide Aars peace of mind knowing her two young boys can safely step into and out of the hot tub without slipping and falling. Similarly, the boys can comfortably play on the deck in bare feet under the sizzling sun without hurting their toes - a must in Aars’ book given Texas’ extreme summer heat.

From dining al fresco at the rustic farmhouse dining table, to splashing in the hot tub and planting fall squash in her garden planters, Aars used her deck’s layout and contemporary outdoor furniture to create well-defined spaces for the family to enjoy together year-round.

Exterior lighting can add ambiance to a property The value of the right lighting in a home is undeniable. Lighting can instantly transform a room and create the ambiance homeowners are looking to establish. Though it might be mostly seen as a way to create mood inside a home, lighting also can do much for lawns and gardens. Backyards have come a long way over the last several decades. Once reserved as play areas for children and stomping grounds for the family dog, backyards have become oases for homeowners and their families. Outdoor living areas are wildly popular, and no such area is complete without exterior lighting. In fact, a recent report from the National Association of Home Builders found that 85 percent of home buyers want exterior lighting, making it the second most desired outdoor feature (patios topped that list). Exterior lighting can have a dramatic effect on landscaping, and estimates from the online financial resource Kiplinger.com suggest such lighting is inexpensive, with installation averaging roughly $67 per fixture. When installing exterior lighting around their landscapes, homeowners can keep various tips in mind to create a relaxing, awe-inspiring mood on their properties at night. ■ Consider uplights. Uplights are installed in the ground and direct light up at a tree, focusing on its trunk or canopy. This creates a dramatic effect that makes it possible to enjoy majestic trees at night just like you might when spending time

in the yard during the day. ■ Focus on trees. Many homeowners already have exterior lighting lining their walkways and patios, but focusing on trees can create an entirely different look. Though it's possible to install exterior tree lighting on your own, landscaping professionals with lighting experience know which fixtures will pair most effectively with the trees around your property and how to arrange them for maximum effect. ■ Opt for warm light. Warm white light creates an inviting feel around the property. The exterior lighting experts at Utah Lights acknowledge that choice of lighting is up to homeowners but also note that, in situations with lower levels of ambient light, such as in exterior lights around a property, people typically prefer warmer light. That's be-

cause warm light tends to be easier on the eyes and directs attention to the features of the landscape, which is many homeowners' goal when installing exterior lighting in their yards. ■ Utilize a timer. Modern exterior lighting timers make it easier than ever to control the

lights outside a home. Many such timers even adjust for the changing seasons and the shifting hours of daylight. That means homeowners shouldn't have to tinker with the timer once it's set. Exterior lighting can add significant appeal to a property without breaking the bank. GT214828

3) EVALUATE HARDWARE Just like that special watch or necklace makes an outfit, the hardware you choose for the bathroom is the jewelry that enhances that space. Because the bathroom features a substantial amount of hardware relative to the size of the room, choosing the right option can make a big visual impact. Hardware in bathrooms includes knobs and pulls on the vanity but extends to other accessories as well. This includes towel racks for bathing and hand towels, toilet paper holders, soap dispensers and shower curtain rods. When planning hardware details, don’t forget to add in light switch covers, wall plates and vent covers to create a cohesive, professionally designed look. Planning your dream outdoor room? How to manage the budget

(BPT) - As the pandemic continues, outdoor spaces have become true extensions of the home. From a calm place to escape to an area to work and focus, outdoor rooms are being designed and utilized more frequently than ever before. “Homeowners have shifted their focus from having spaces to entertain to making their homes more functional,” says Joe Raboine, director of residential hardscapes, Belgard. “With the increased time spent at home, outdoor spaces have become a haven for both recreation and relaxation, as well as a valuable asset when it’s time to resell.” With over 25 years as an outdoor designer, Raboine has insight into the outdoor living industry. He expects biophilic design trends to gain momentum as people continue craving a connection to nature. This design approach prioritizes customizing spaces that flow with the natural landscape, benefitting human health and environmental wellness.

Some of the most popular room additions that complement a property are outdoor dining rooms, living rooms, kitchens and offices.

Raboine will help you in managing the budget: 1) Research typical project costs in your area Ask neighbors if they have completed similar projects. Get multiple quotes from several contractors. Go beyond labor costs and determine product costs online to understand the big picture financially. To give yourself options, look for alternative products that are similar in price.
