Second to None by Dana McKenna After nine years of working at the Verlo Mattress Factory Store in Crystal Lake, Ray Westman was happy to take over ownership of the franchise. That was back in 1994. Since then, Ray has added stores in McHenry and Lake Geneva, and he’s proud that Verlo has been voted the No. 1 mattress store for more than 15 consecutive years by the Northwest Herald’s “Best of the Fox” readers’ choice awards. Ray attributes such a great customer backing to two main features of Verlo. First, the quality and comfort of the mattresses is second to none. Verlo uses better quality materials, and because the mattresses are built locally, they offer a lifetime comfort guarantee. That means Verlo has the ability to adjust the comfort of a mattress for a customer at any time, for a nominal fee. “It’s like taking your car in for service,” Ray

says. “If after a few years you desire a different comfort level to your Verlo mattress, we pick it up and rebuild it for you.” By changing the materials inside with harder or softer foams, Ray and his staff can change the feel and comfort of the mattress, often within the same day. “That’s a feature no one else in the industry can offer,” Ray says. Second, his staff members are not only friendly, but they understand the business better than anyone because they wear multiple hats. “Our comfort coaches are not just salesmen: they’re some of the people who build the bed,” Ray says. “Sometimes they deliver it, too.” That translates to better customer service, because each employee has a complete understanding of how each bed is made and can help clients figure out

which bed will fit them best. “It leads to the customer sleeping well and being happy with their Verlo mattress for a long time,” Ray says. CELEBRATING OVER OVER CELEBRATING

Not only is the location on the Fox River exceptional, but the multi-level facility boasts an upper level restaurant, bar and heated Skydeck, outside bar, boat bar, outdoor covered lounge area, McHenry County’s largest beer garden, and the Oar Stage and tent for entertainment. “All of this gives our customers so many options to settle into their favorite spot,” says Bonnie, “and with our extensive menu, daily food specials, craft beers, cocktails, entertainment quality, and daily special events all summer long, we offer something for everyone.” Upcoming special events include a 4-Day Halloween Weekend Bash with live entertainment and costume contests, and

the annual Turkey Ball 3-Day Pre-Thanksgiving music. This winter, Broken Oar will feature an Arctic Bar in December and January where guests can pre-register to enjoy specialty cocktails, wine, and revel in the extensive winter decorations. Other annual events include the “River Shiver” in March in which costume-clad participants raise money to jump in and brave the icy Fox River for Lurie Children’s Hospital; the “Shiver Run 5k Fundraiser” in March; the spring and fall “Barks n’ Brews” dog-friendly craft beer festival, as well as regular weekly summer events. Remember: There is always something new at the Broken Oar!

by Dana McKenna Featuring live music all year long, it’s no wonder the Broken Oar was voted “One of the Best Places to Listen to Live Music” in 2018 by area fans. From April through October alone, over 150 bands perform outdoors on the Oar Tent stage. According to Bonnie Miske-Haber, General Manager of Broken Oar, “Our Oar Tent insures that rain or shine, the bands go on!” Broken Oar’s extraordinary location on seven acres on the Fox River serves as the perfect backdrop to this unique dining experience. The quality of the food, bands, and “no cover charge” entertainment keep people coming back for more.

Expert Advice with Excellent Products by Dana McKenna As a family-owned fixture of the McHenry County community for over 50 years, the knowledgeable staff at Lloyd’s Paint n’ Paper provides the individual attention you need to create the right interior look for your home. Alan & Bernie Gould own the business that was originally bought in 1960 by their parents, Lloyd and Dorothy Gould. Like their parents, they and their staff have the natural affinity, attitude, and experience to connect with customers. When you step inside Lloyd’s, you’re surrounded by thousands of fabric swatches, beautiful window treatment vignettes, over 3,500 paint colors, and the friendly and knowledgeable staff who can help you find exactly what you’re looking for. “We carry products from Hunter Douglas, Benjamin

Moore, Cabot Stains, and Sikkens, to name a few. Our staff is always ready to help you,” says Alan. “We are committed to establishing a relationship with our customers and not just making a sale.” In fact, Lloyd’s can keep track of their customer’s purchases for 10 years with just a phone number, making it much easier for clients to coordinate, colormatch, and re-order products over the years. As a long-time business member of the community, Lloyd’s is happy to give back whenever possible. “We are so pleased to contribute hundreds of gallons of paint and stain to ReStore, the home improvement outlet of the Northern Fox Valley chapter of Habitat for Humanity,” explains Alan. Another way in which Lloyd’s cares for the community is their recycling program for water-based paint. Alan says, “Any latex

paint purchased from Lloyd’s can be recycled for free, and we only charge a nominal fee to recycle paint purchased elsewhere.” These two programs are just some of the ways Lloyd’s sets itself apart from the competition and illustrates why they were voted “One of the Best” Places for Paint in 2018. But for Alan and the staff, they are important ways to care for their community. Alan reminds us, “When you shop at Lloyd’s or any small business in downtown Crystal Lake, you are making an investment in your community.”

One of the Best- Carpet/Flooring Stores Good things come in small packages, and a great example of that old saying is the Woodstock showroom of Murphy’s Flooring. “It’s deceptive because it’s a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. The building goes back deep, and people are often surprised when they come into our store,” said Keith Murphy, who co-owns Murphy’s Flooring with his wife Natalie. The store opened in 2013, and Keith and Natalie are proud to be chosen as One of the Best Carpet/ Flooring Stores, for the 2018 Best of the Fox awards. “We’re very happy because we work hard to provide great service, and when customers show their appreciation, it means a lot,” he said. Murphy’s Flooring specializes in the sales and installation of quality carpet, hardwood and tile floors. The Woodstock showroom offers hundreds of products, including luxury vinyl tile, knowledgeable salespeople and

expert installers. Keith has spent his career in the flooring business, and began working for his family’s Arlington Heights flooring store as a teenager. “I started in the warehouse when I was sixteen, then worked out in the field doing installations, I’ve been in sales, been a store manager and then a few years ago, I went out on my own,” he said. Natalie puts her business expertise to work behind the scenes, handling accounting, marketing and scheduling. “Everything is focused on customers, and we follow through on the business end to make sure it’s a smooth process,” she said. Rounding out the staff are Keith’s brother

Patrick, who also worked in their parents’ business, adding to our team Sarah Olson bringing 16 years of flooring experience and retail salesperson Karen Lagerhausen. “Karen is fantastic when it comes to décor and color choice. Customers love working with her,” said Keith.

Even better, our wings are never frozen and are hand-spun in the sauces to make sure they are coated to perfection.” These are the winning ingredients for garnering the 2018 Best of the Fox “Best Chicken Wings” title. When asked what makes people come back for more Vicki says, “We have an expansive menu, so everyone can find something they love: burgers, salads, wraps, chicken sandwiches, and of course our

delicious traditional bonein wings, and our boneless wings. We also offer different weekly specials on food and drinks, so there’s always something new to come in to try. In addition, Vicki notes the business’s commitment to the community: even though Buffalo Wild Wings restaurants can be found all over the U.S., each franchise commits to having a vested interest in supporting their community. The Algonquin and Crystal Lake restaurants are no exception. “We do fundraisers and sponsorships, and love helping local schools, as well as both kids’ and adults’ sporting teams in the community,” explains Vicki. In fact, right now, the restaurants are raising money

for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. “John Weiler is our franchisee and he lives in the Algonquin area, so he chose the location on Randall Road. When we were given the chance to open a second restaurant in Crystal Lake a few years later, John accepted that opportunity and it’s been a success as well!” Both locations enjoy popularity as a place to gather and watch sporting events. Vicki says, “If you can’t be at the game, you should be at Buffalo Wild Wings!” With great food, friendly staff, energetic atmosphere, great values, and local support, it’s really no wonder why Buffalo Wild Wings has been voted The Best.

One of the things that makes Gulgren Appliance unique, according to Gulgren, is that the business is there for its customers from start to finish and each customer receives personalized service. Once a customer buys an appliance from Gulgren, it also has its own team to deliver the appliances, install the appliances and a top notch service department to stand behind every purchase. With its years of experience, Gulgren Appliance staff is knowledgeable about the products they sell and is able to offer repairs on not only appliances purchased from Gulgren, but also old appliances and appliances purchased elsewhere. For those customers who like to “do-ityourself,” Gulgren Appliance also offers a large parts department. Sit down to steak, service at Jameson’s By Stephanie N. Grimoldby Tender, done-just-right filet mignon. Fall-off-the-bone baby back ribs. Greek halibut that is out of this world. If you’re looking for McHenry County’s best steakhouse – which also carries incredible seafood – look no further than Jameson’s Charhouse in Crystal Lake, voted tops in the steakhouse category of the Best of the Fox reader’s choice awards, and One of the Best for fine dining. Diners tell General Manager Peter Kourtis “it’s the best they’ve ever had” after a meal at Jameson’s, Kourtis said. And it’s true, the food is excellent, he said. But it also helps to have a large variety of options on the menu. “You could come to Jameson’s three times a week and satisfy any taste, anything you’re looking for,” he said. “From burgers - I’ve got

people telling me we’ve got the best burgers in town – [to] steaks, fish, salads; we’ve got something for everyone, every night of the week.” You can’t beat the value, either, he adds, noting most entrees come with soup, salad and a side dish. It’s not just good food that creates a pleasant dining experience. Kourtis is quick to give credit to his team for the rave reviews the restaurant receives. “We can’t do anything that we do here, all this success, without the wonderful staff I’ve had over the years, past and present,” he said. “I’ve had a tremendous staff.” Half a dozen staff members have been with the team all nine years that Jameson’s has been open in Crystal Lake. Kourtis, who started as a server at the family chain’s Mt. Prospect location, said the owners fostered a

family atmosphere since the chain’s inception 28 years ago, and it’s carried over to today. “It’s been common sense over the years; I just expect them to work together, treat others the way they want to be treated,” Kourtis said. “Customers notice if the staff is helping each other out, like if a server picks up a dish off a table that isn’t theirs. We try to do that here.” Jameson’s believes in providing tremendous value, quality product and exceptional service, Kourtis said. “We care that people leave happy, satisfied,” he said. “We know that the economy is getting better. We know that people work hard for their money, and they can go spend it anywhere. We’d like them to come spend it here, and I think it shows. Every night people compliment our staff.”

‘Family first’ at Breaking Bread

Northwest Herald / NWHerald.com • Sunday, October 28, 2018

14

By Stephanie N. Grimoldby One night, Teri Plazak had a dream. She opened a business that was entirely focused on community, where families could come together and detox from electronics and eat a nice meal together. The idea wasn’t farfetched. “My husband and I grew up with families that ate meals together,” Plazak said. “Even now, we eat Sunday dinner together.” So, six years ago, Teri, her husband, Chris, and their oldest son, John, opened a restaurant in Cary where families could break bread together. Aptly named, Breaking Bread Catering and Deli opened a second location a year and a half ago in Crystal Lake. At its core, Breaking Bread is a restaurant and catering business, and according to residents who voted it Best of the Fox, it’s the top caterer in McHenry County. Plazak and her team focus on making each catered meal artistic and beautiful, displaying their delicious, handcrafted food in pretty baskets and chafing dishes to complement the occasion. But the bottom line is taste, and Breaking

Bread goes above and beyond to provide exactly what clients want. “If someone says, ‘My grandma used to make this recipe, can you make it?’, I’ll try my best to make it as close to the original as possible,” Plazak said. Breaking Bread also offers gluten-free and vegetarian options that are outstanding – good enough to earn “One of the Best” honors in the Best of the Fox competition. As a dine-in/take-out restaurant, Breaking Bread offers unique lunch and dinner menus in a family-friendly environment. Top choices include Reuben sandwiches (the restaurant cuts its own corned beef and makes its own sauce); mac ’n cheese bites; and a fried chicken and bacon sandwich with homemade potato chips and a dill sauce “that people crave,” Plazak said. Breaking Bread also is a deli that sells meat and cheese by the pound. Can’t make it to the restaurant/deli? Breaking Bread delivers meals – and deli items – for free. “We felt it’s a fee that’s not in tune with what we are, and we just hope our drivers get some

consideration,” Plazak said. “And it seems to work out well.” Breaking Bread offers online ordering for lunch, dinner or by-the-pound deli orders. It also provides curbside service, with Plazak noting older patrons may have difficulty walking inside; parents of small children may not want to wake a sleeping baby; or someone who broke an ankle may not be able to hobble inside. Simply put, Breaking Bread cares about its community members. “We’re grateful for the families that share our meals,” Plazak said.

Express Employment Professionals local ownership consists of husbandand-wife team Tom and Terri Greeno. The two began their successful operation in August of 2003 in Crystal Lake. Since that time, they have expanded and now own additional Express franchise offices in Northern Kane and Rockford. The company is SBA, federal, and WOBE, State of IL, certified. A new kind of tattoo studio

Northwest Herald / NWHerald.com • Sunday, October 28, 2018

By Stephanie N. Grimoldby Many people think of dark, dingy tattoo parlors – with dark, dingy employees - as the locales for tattoos and body piercings. But Taylor Kuhlman and his team of artists at Monster Ink Tattoo and Piercing Studio in Crystal Lake have created a new destination for body art – a studio that is clean, modern, upscale and open to all. “We wanted to create something that people hadn’t really seen too much in the tattoo industry,” the 31-year-old said. “You have a lot of old traditions and things that are the way things are … but service is often missing. We wanted to create something where anyone from any background or any niche could come in and feel comfortable and get some awesome art in a very modern environment.” McHenry County residents approve, as Monster Ink was voted “Best of the Fox” for tattoo shops. Clients have embraced the studio’s mo-

dernity, Kuhlman said. They can flip through artists’ portfolios on iPads instead of binders of pictures; the artists use newer technology like rotary tattoo machines, which are lighter in weight, quiet and less intimidating; the studio runs paperless; and there are multiple TVs throughout the venue. On a technical level, Monster Ink is the only studio in McHenry County to use exclusively implant-grade titanium or gold for piercing. Clients also appreciate the studio’s upscale vibe, evidenced by the quality of work of the artists. “We hand-pick and choose the best artists that we can, and each has a different variety of artwork,” Kuhlman said. Monster Ink also has a large selection of upscale body jewelry, including genuine stones and diamonds, which are hard to find for nose piercings, Kuhlman said. Finally, clients have found Monster Ink to be a welcoming place – not necessarily common in

the industry. “People always kind of think of cliché [parlors] in movies: a dingy place where some hardass is going to tattoo bikers or gangsters,” Kuhlman said. “We want to jump out of that box … . [Our clients] compare us to a spa or salon when they come in here.” Middle-aged moms, teachers, police officers, doctors – people of every income range and demographic have been clients at Monster Ink, Kuhlman said, including first timers with a case of nerves. “Getting them in the door really helps alleviate that nervousness,” Kuhlman said. “Once they see the environment they’re going to be in and sit down and talk to the people here, they see we’re people just like them.” Even kids are welcome, as the studio does many lobe piercings. “We’re often commended on the ease and comfortability of that experience by both the parents and the children,” Kuhlman said.

Hometown Craft Brew is Area’s “Go To” At the start, John and Chuck thought they might be able to handle brewing and operations on their own. “Fortunately,” laughs John, “we came to our senses and partnered up with one of the most acclaimed brewers in Illinois, Ryan Clooney. Like Chuck and me, Ryan has deep roots in this area, but also happens to be one of the best brewmasters in the country.” According to Ryan, “We focus on making approachable, classic-style beers. We also have seasonal, small-batch, and specialty beers. But we hang our hat on making consistently delicious beers.” The tap room is a relaxed place to enjoy a pint or two with friends and family. “Food

Truck Friday” is always fun, but guests can also bring in food, or place an order for delivery right to their table, making the CLB tap room unique in the area. But the focus remains on creating well-executed, diverse beers for Northern Illinois. John explains, “Just a few days ago, we canned our seasonal ‘Last Cast’ Blood Orange IPA for the very first time. Also new is a convenient 15-pack of the brewery’s best-selling ‘Beach Blonde’ hitting store shelves this month.” John continues, “There truly is always something new, which is a really exciting benefit of being a small local brewery.”

DON’T TRY US BECAUSE WE’RE BREWED LOCALLY. Or because we source local ingredients for a locally sustainable economy. Instead, try us because we’re committed to brewing world-class beer. Beer created with the attention to quality and taste reminiscent of a simpler time when craftsmanship mattered. Then again... Did we mention we’re local?

by Dana McKenna “Crystal Lake Brewing is a local, familyowned, community-minded business, with our sights set on making truly world-class beer,” says John O’Fallon, who partnered with long-time friend, Chuck Ross, to found CLB. “Our beers are now distributed in over 1,000 locations throughout Northern Illinois, and our medal at the World Beer Cup is a result of our commitment. Our goal is to be the area’s hometown, go-to beer.” Voters in the 2018 Best of the Fox believe they’ve hit that goal: CLB was voted “The Best Local Craft Brewery” for 2018, and has been each year since the category launched.

For Home Décor, There’s No Need to Look Elsewhere by Dana McKenna “I couldn’t imagine doing what we do without our loyal customers,” says Mary Meyn, owner of Yours & Meyn, Simply Designed which won “The Best Home Décor” for Best of the Fox 2018. Yours & Meyn offers a truly unique shopping experience. With the home décor offered and the exceptional customer service provided, Mary says “Our clients know they are always getting the perfect piece for their home for a quality price. We take the time to listen to their needs and help them select exactly what they need and are hop-

ing to find.” On top of the beautiful items Yours & Meyn carries, clients can count on outstanding design services as well. “I’ve been doing design work for years, and before I opened the store I couldn’t find quality accents, furniture, art, and other accessories all in one place,” explains Mary. And that’s how she came to create her own retail space. “I chose downtown Crystal Lake because it already had a fabulous collection of unique shops and services — there’s no place like it in the Northern Illinois area — and I really wanted to be a part of this

community. I felt Yours & Meyn would fit right in.” As Yours & Meyn enters what Mary calls the “fun” quarter of the year, customers are warmly invited to experience fall and holiday cheer every day, but “Be sure to come in from November 8th through the 10th for our Holiday Open House!” As the store has grown, Mary notes that they still assist some of their very first clients. “It’s so amazing to have these friends stick with me over the years! I hope all of our clients know how appreciative we are for their loyalty.”

Score at the the perfect location for his own restaurant. “As I was creating this new chapter in life, I fell upon the opportunity to acquire this property. It was the perfect homeycabin-in-the-woods feel that initially attracted me.” The suburban Crystal Lake downtown setting, and the building with a unique look was exactly what he wanted. “I spent two months before opening preparing the establishment, and then continued updating throughout these last three years. There will probably be at least two more major updates on the property within the next 12 months.” As busy as the restaurant keeps him, he won’t forget his first priority: his customers. “I will always listen to my customers and accept their feedback. That allows us to continually improve our ability to produce the best quality food with the best taste and freshest ingredients.” Goal Line boasts a fireplace burning in the winter and two patios in the summer. They also offer a second floor for seating or for private events for a capacity of approximately 80 guests, offering a full bar and multiple TVs. Bob continues, “We recently added five new burgers to our menu, a balsamic bruschetta, and a 16oz. Black Angus ribeye steak. Coming soon, I will be baking a new variety of desserts to add to the menu, too! I’m always working on future specials or menu options.” As if he isn’t busy enough, Bob is working on writing a cookbook to be published in the near future. He says, “Always stay tuned for something new at the Goal Line!”

by Dana McKenna Goal Line Sports Bar and Grill is three-years-new as of July 1st, and has been built on the premise of quality, from-scratch food; friendly service; and all at fair prices in a great family setting with a sports theme. Area voters agree that Goal Line is “One of the Best” places to be for burgers, pizza, fish fry, and a sports bar! Owner Bob Bless built the menu and created the recipes to entice the palates of his diverse customers. “Our customers come back because our food is consistently awesome. My kitchen staff has been with me from Day One,” says Bob. His approach to running his restaurant is very hands-on. “I participate in all aspects of the daily business, from cooking to bartending, to serving to bussing, and to washing dishes. Whatever is needed, whenever it’s needed. There isn’t room for pride in this business if you want to be successful.” Bob began this adventure with one primary focus and has kept it as Goal Line’s slogan from the beginning: ‘It’s not bar food.’ “Our name infers that we are a sports bar, but I really want the emphasis to be on our food.” This restaurant is Bob’s ‘second act’ in life. “In my younger years, I was involved in many restaurants in several capacities and always wanted to open my own place when the time was right. Once I became a retired policeman, I decided this was the time.” Once Bob retired, he attended bartending school, culinary school, and worked in different establishments in the 18 months prior to finding
