THE GAME WITHIN THE GAME Quarterback can give team edge by properly reading defense

By JOE STEVENSON

joestevenson@shawmedia.com In the matter of seconds between breaking the huddle and taking the shotgun snap from center Gabe Contreras, Crystal Lake Central quarterback Aidan Ellinger has a lot to digest. Ellinger checks the safeties – is the defense in Cover 1 or Cover 2? Are the cornerbacks playing press coverage or are they off the line of scrimmage? Sometimes positioning will hint whether it is man-to-man or zone. He looks to see how many players are lined up in the defensive box (the area 3 to 5 yards from the line of scrimmage, the width of roughly the offensive line). Ellinger reads what he sees, matches it with the play the Tigers have called and considers what will work best. A quarterback reading what defenses are preparing to do surely

ranks as one of the toughest tasks in of mistakes. You have to learn how all of sports. Whether a team runs trithe defenses react to your routes and ple-option or spread attack with runhow they cover certain things. Ellinger, a oping quarterbacks Mike Brasile, Woodstock coach senior who did not a decade ago at Marian Central with forplay quarterback mer head coach Ed until his freshman Brucker. The Hurricanes cranked out year, felt like he started picking four NCAA Division I quarterbacks in things up more quickly last season succession (Jon Budmayr, Ben Krol, when he became the varsity starter. “You’re doing preparation with your quarterback, helping them understand the structure of your opponent’s defense and explaining our base stuff,” said Stanger, who is in his fourth season on head coach Jon McLaughlin’s staff. “How do we run it against this team this week? What are other things we want to take advantage of, as well?”

DOING THEIR HOMEWORK

Defenses often try pre-snap deception in order to confuse quarterbacks or linemen. A linebacker may act like he is blitzing and instead drop into coverage, or a defense might show one look when it actually is running something else. The more a quarterback sees in the offseason video work, the better he will understand what is in front of him in a game. Woodstock coach Mike Brasile

• READING DEFENSES Continued from page 3 played on the offensive and defensive lines for Brucker on the Blue Streaks’ 1997 Class 5A state championship team. He was an assistant on Brucker’s staff at Woodstock and also coached with former Blue Streaks head coach Steve Beard. He says he learned a lot about running an offense from Brucker and Beard. Now, Brasile is calling plays for returning starting quarterback Michael Purkey. “We start with base rules, and we have rules on how to attack those different coverages,” Brasile said. “The biggest thing [for Purkey] is getting more reps, taking that time to do the work in the classroom and showing him different coverages out on the field. We went to a lot of 7-on-7 [tournaments] over the summer, and that helps a lot. We saw a variety of teams. That time is invaluable. It really helps us along.” Stanger says the classroom work is vital to the offense’s success. “Getting on a whiteboard and breaking things down so they can understand on a base level,” Stanger said. “Then, when we get into a game situation, one of the things we focus on is reading the roof of the defense – reading the back end, the structure of the corners and safeties, things like that.” When Purkey leads the Blue Streaks out of the huddle, Brasile said he might have a progression such as “Go. Stick. Arrow.” It is then up to Purkey to figure out, from the defense, where to go. “As soon as [Purkey] has the play, he has those three key words, which are the routes,” Brasile said. “If he reads the Go [being open], he’s going to rock and fire it. Otherwise, he’s going to shuffle-step and read the Stick or the Arrow.”

CONSIDERING THE OPTIONS

Teams that throw may, as Stanger said, have their quarterback start in the secondary to read the defense. Others start up front. Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge have built state powerhouses by running triple-option football with great precision. C-G is the defending Class 6A state champion; Prairie Ridge won 6A the two previous years. The idea of option football is creating numbers mismatches. This is done by not blocking certain defensive players, often a lineman or linebacker, and letting the quarterback read those players. Prairie Ridge quarterback Connor Lydon often keys on two players when he comes out of the huddle. The play the Wolves have called determines which players will be unblocked and are Lydon’s responsi-

Prairie Ridge quarterback Connor Lydon watches the defense as he decides whether to hand off the ball to Jackson Willis last season against Jacobs in Algonquin.

Woodstock quarterback Michael Purkey prepares to launch a pass against Johnsburg last season at Woodstock. bility. For example, during the mesh with the fullback, Lydon may key on a defensive end to see if he’s coming for the fullback. If he does, Lydon can pull the ball back and run, looking for the next unblocked player. He then decides by that defender’s reaction whether he will keep the ball or pitch it. “It’s pretty difficult,” said Lydon, who played quarterback growing up through the Junior Wolves program. “I’ve been doing this since I was a little kid, and I didn’t get the full grasp until I was a sophomore or junior. It’s been so many reps. It’s not easy to learn at all. What I’m looking for is ‘Where do we have the advantage? What matchups do I like in blocking?’ ” Schremp usually gives Lydon a menu of two or three plays from which he can pick when he gets to the line. “[The quarterback] has to know

the ins and outs of the plays before we can teach him what he’s looking for,” Schremp said. “He has to understand the different phases of the option, then he starts to look for things. [Lydon] doesn’t have free rein through the playbook, but he has options. You see this front, go to this play.” When Schremp speaks at coaching clinics, he often hears the same question from defensive coaches: “What is the toughest type of defense you’re going to face?” Schremp believes the beauty of the option is that there isn’t one, because the option has an answer for any defense if the quarterback correctly reads it. “You give me a defensive front, and I still have a play we can run off that, that we feel really good about,” Schremp said. “The toughest defense is a really disciplined defense. The front doesn’t matter, 4-4, 3-4, whatever. Personnel matters more against us than a front.”

GAME OF ADJUSTMENTS

There are games within the game between those calling plays and those trying to stop them that make football more intriguing. What the quarterback is reading during a game is crucial to the coach running the offense and what changes should be made. “We’ll go over what certain positions like to do,” Ellinger said. “Presnap, if we see linebackers or safeties moving, some defenses like to kind of trick you and move around, but not really do anything. We’ll counter

those movements, or we’ll just go over what their weaknesses are in certain pass plays.” Central consults its iPads on the sideline that show videos from the end zone of what just transpired on the previous drive. Stanger looks at those and talks with Ellinger about what he is seeing. “That’s huge as a playcaller,” Stanger said. “Being on the same page as your quarterback is absolutely critical. You see guys in the NFL sitting down and looking at pictures. We’re doing something similar, only ours is video. They can’t use video.” Offensive players usually gather as a group after a drive to talk with coaches about what worked and what they are seeing from the defense. “It’s not just me,” Lydon said. “A big part is our linemen. We usually use a whiteboard and draw up the defenses, how they align. That switches throughout the game.” With the mental challenges of the position, coaches are thrilled to have a player step in at quarterback who will be there, such as Ellinger, Lydon and Purkey, for more than one season. Ideally, things should run smoother with an experienced mind directing the show. “It’s definitely difficult,” Stanger said. “I’ve been very fortunate. Most of the quarterbacks I’ve had have been able to pick it up. It is a challenge for quarterbacks; it’s a lot to think about. If you can break things down and simplify it, it’s not that bad.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH (Players highlighted in the “5 to Watch” are not listed here.) Matt Burba, Huntley, sr., DT Burba (5-11, 245) is a two-time All-FVC defensive lineman and was a Northwest Herald All-Area first-team selection last season. Burba, who also is a Red Raiders heavyweight wrestler, had 49 tackles, three sacks and five tackles for losses. Jason Burburija, CL South, sr., DE Burburija (6-0, 240) led the area with 12 sacks last season and was a disruptive force for the Gators. He also was South’s 220-pound wrestler and qualified for the Class 2A State Tournament. Nasir Canty, Jacobs, so., RB-LB Canty (6-2, 210) had a brief and impressive start to his high school career last season, running 12 times for 160 yards and three touchdowns in a 64-60 loss to Crystal Lake Central in Week 9. The Golden Eagles are eager to see what he can do both running the ball and at linebacker. Ryder Havens, Huntley, jr., RB Havens (5-9, 165) ranked eighth on the area rushing list with 1,073 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Red Raiders. He scored on a 99-yard kickoff return in Huntley’s 55-14 loss to Maine South in the first round of the Class 8A playoffs. Kyle Koelblinger, PR, sr., S Koelblinger (5-9, 185) will start for a third year for the Wolves and lead their defense. He racked up 107 tackles last season and also gives Prairie Ridge an offensive threat as a kicker. He was 3 for 4 on field goals and 42 of 43 on extra points. Connor Lydon, PR, sr., QB Lydon (6-1, 185) learned under the master, Samson Evans, then took over and ran the Wolves’ option offense well last season. He rushed for 723 yards and 13 touchdowns and should become more of a threat this season. Justin Prusko, DC, sr.,TE-DE Prusko (6-6, 220) did not have big numbers in D-C’s offense with five catches for 77 yards and one touchdown, but he is respected for his blocking and could become one of the Chargers’ top targets this season. He committed to NCAA Division I Southeast Missouri State University last month. Brad Walker, Huntley, jr., DE Teams saw enough of Walker (6-1, 265) last season, but they will have to face him for two more years. NCAA Division I schools are taking notice because of

Walker’s strength and speed. He had 46 tackles and four tackles for losses.

PIVOTAL GAMES Prairie Ridge at Huntley, 7 p.m., Sept. 13 • This Week 3 matchup could go a long way toward deciding who wins the Fox Valley Conference. Huntley rallied with a long fourth-quarter drive for the winning

touchdown in the final two minutes last season. Prairie Ridge at Cary-Grove, 7 p.m., Oct. 18 • The two kings of the option offense have accounted for the last three Class 6A state titles, Prairie Ridge (2016, 2017) and C-G last season. This game always has a bearing on the FVC championship. Crystal Lake Central at Jacobs, 7 p.m., Oct. 25 • Their regular-season finale last year, a 64-60 Central victory, was one point off the FVC record for combined points. This season’s Week 9 game may not be that wild, but could carry playoff implications for both teams.

TOP CONTENDERS Prairie Ridge The Wolves won the 2016 and 2017 Class 6A state championships, then fin-

ished 8-3 with mostly new starters last season. Now, they have 16 starters returning, led by quarterback Connor Lydon, and could have a shot at their third FVC title in four years. Huntley The Red Raiders tied with Prairie Ridge as runner-up last season and have about half their starters returning. Huntley has another huge offensive line and returns some of its best defenders. Consider them a threat to win the FVC. Cary-Grove The Trojans lost a lot to graduation, including quarterback Ben McDonald (the Northwest Herald Player of the Year) and tackle Addison West (now at Western Michigan). But C-G is still C-G, there are several key defensive players returning and fullback Blake Skol is back to lead the offense.

SCOUTING REPORT • C-G has played for three state championships since the 2012 season (2012, 2014, 2018) and won its second state title in school history last season. It was Seaburg’s first state championship as head coach; he was sophomore coach when former head coach Bruce Kay took the 2009 team to the 6A title. • FB Blake Skol led the team with 1,489 rushing yards last season and should again be one of the area’s top backs. The rest of the backfield positions will have new starters. The Tigers are trying to reach the postseason for the second time in three seasons.

MUST-WATCH GAME The chance that Central and Jacobs will be a shootout to match last season’s finale is slim. This one could be more interesting, however, if there are playoff berths and seeding positions on the line in Week 9. – Joe Stevenson

MUST-WATCH GAME One of the FVC’s oldest rivalries continues in Week 3 when the Gators visit Crystal Lake Central’s Owen Metcalf Field to take on the Tigers. South wants to return to the playoffs; Central wants back in after missing last season. – Joe Stevenson

McHenry defensive end and tight end Kevin Sandoval

QUICK HITS Coach: Matt Zimolzak (fourth season, 22-10). 2018 record: 6-4 overall, 6-2 FVC. Fast fact: Huntley has been to the playoffs for five consecutive seasons, the longest string in school history.

SCOUTING REPORT

McHENRY WARRIORS QUICK HITS Coach: Jon Niemic (second season, 2-7). 2018 record: 2-6 overall, 2-7 FVC. Fast fact: Braden Crowley, a senior last season, scored rushing, receiving and passing touchdowns against Cary-Grove in a 63-21 loss last season.

SCOUTING REPORT • Crowley (502 rushing yards) and RB Luke Peacock (568) were the top rushers last season and have graduated. Crowley is playing at NCAA Division III powerhouse Wisconsin-Whitewater. • The Warriors started last season 0-7, but finished with a two-game winning streak, beating Crystal Lake Central, 45-21, then defeating Hampshire, 28-0. • Chris Zieba, who threw for 614 yards and started last season, was competing for the quarterback job with sophomore Andrew Hoffman this summer. • DE Kevin Sandoval (6-3, 210) will be one of the defensive leaders and also should see some snaps at tight end for the offense. Niemic has heard from college coaches at the NCAA Division II and NAIA levels about Sandoval. • OL-DL Jacob Lesus, LB Paul Zunkel, WR Adam Benton and DB Anthony

Angeles are some of the top returning players. • Some new players Niemic thinks will take on key roles are LB Brody Hallin, OL Luke Zunkel and DB Kyle Kaempf, all sophomores, as well as junior WR Matt Gallimore. • “We’re looking to take the next steps in competing in the FVC, which hopefully equates to winning football games,” Niemic said. “We’re going to rely on a few juniors and sophomores to step into key positions.”

• The biggest question heading into this season was one the Red Raiders had not pondered in a while: Who will start at quarterback? Junior Bruno Bosman and senior transfer Patsy Ricciardi competed for the job through the summer. Bosman seemed to have an edge in early practices, but Zimolzak felt the offense was in good hands with either player. • Two of the Raiders’ best players last season were sophomores, RB Ryder Havens and DE Brad Walker. Havens was eighth in the area with 1,073 yards rushing; Walker (6-1, 260) is on the radar of NCAA Division I colleges all over. • WRs Cade Whiteside and Joey Cauldren could be two of the top targets. If Bosman starts at quarterback, Ricciardi will play an H-back role and often run out of the slot position, which he played at Marian Central as a sophomore. Jacob Freitag, Alex Denniston, Carter Knutsen and Christian Brown all could be in the mix at receiver as well. • Up front, OL Trevor Masten (6-4,

Those two up front should help establish a strong defense. • LBs Rukkus Hunkins and Mitch Murray are returning starters (Murray moves from the secondary), along with DB Alex Janke. DUNDEE-CROWN CHARGERS QUICK HITS Coach: Mike Steinhaus (sixth season, 11-45) 2018 record: 4-5 overall, 3-5 FVC Fast fact: The Chargers played in the Fox Valley Conference’s highest-scoring football game ever last season, a 70-55 loss to Prairie Ridge in Week 4.

SCOUTING REPORT

JACOBS GOLDEN EAGLES QUICK HITS Coach: Bill Mitz (10th season, 53-37) 2018 record: 3-6 overall, 3-5 FVC Fast fact: Mitz is 250-135 as he heads into his 38th season as head coach (the first 28 came at Stevenson). He is 22nd on the IHSA career wins list and will move into the top 20 with two more victories.

SCOUTING REPORT • The injury-ravaged 2018 season did not sit well with the Golden Eagles. They suffered several injuries to key players, which played a part in their 3-6 record. That was Mitz’s first losing season since 1988, when his Stevenson team was 2-7. • QB Cole Bhardwaj started the last four games last season and picked up valuable experience. Bhardwaj (6-2, 180) has good arm strength and the Eagles hope they will have a potent passing game. WR Max Stec, a junior, started at safety last season, but will be used mainly on offense this year. He gives Bhardwaj a 6-4 target on the outside. • Mitz likes a power running game and RBs Jacob Mobeck and Nasir Canty should make the Eagles strong there. Mobeck (5-10, 180) led the team with 602 rushing yards, while Canty, a 6-2, 210-pound sophomore, rushed 12 times for 160 yards and three touchdowns in last year’s season finale against Crystal Lake Central. • OL-DL George Trojanek (6-1,240) is back to start on the line and sopho-

more G Joe Volenec (6-1, 220) is a new player who should help out up front. If the line can run block and pass protect, Mitz thinks the Eagles can put up their share of points. • Jacobs did not make the playoffs for only the second time in Mitz’s nine seasons at the school. “There’s a definite chip on the shoulder, from the head coach all the way down,” Mitz said. “Regardless of injuries or not, we needed to play better football, and we didn’t. We have a good group and had a great offseason. We’re ready to go.”

• D-C tied for its second-most successful season since 1994 last year and was alive to become playoff-eligible heading into the final game. • Among the players the Chargers lost to graduation were QB Josh Raby (1,563 passing yard, 15 TDs), RB Ricky Ibarra (746 yards) and WRs Jordan Hairston and Jack Michalski (25 receptions each). That is a lot of offense to replace. • TE-DE Justin Prusko (6-6, 220) committed to NCAA Division I FCS Southeast Missouri State this summer. Prusko is a tough blocker and should assume more of a role in the passing game this season. • Senior Evan Echlin and junior Matt Ward were competing in camp for the starting quarterback job. We’re trying to get them consistent and to understand the work and the process it’s going to take to play meaningful football like we did last year.”

SCOUTING REPORT • The Whip-Purs struggled to score last season with only 60 points for the season. Two of their better games came in the last four, a 41-20 loss to Normal West (10-2) and a 21-13 loss to Dundee-Crown (4-5). • Jackson Milison and Ben Curran were competing for the starting quarterback job when the Whips started preseason practices. They are, by far, the smallest school in the FVC in student enrollment. The concern among KRC schools, however, was that Burlington’s rapidly increasing enrollment was making it too big, so the KRC voted the Rockets out. • QB Jake Lenschow, WR Nathan Arians, OLs Ryan Joseph, Jake Schmitt, Matt Muetterties and Jake Borman, and K Andrew Solomon are returning offensive starters for Burlington. • LB Hunter Hodgson, LB Luke Thompson, DL Michael Dubanowski, DB Mark Ganziano and Muetterties are returning starters for the defense. • Melvin tabbed WR-DB Marc Wisniewski and OL-DL Connor Hodgson and Matt Eshoo as new players who could make big impacts

KISHWAUKEE RIVER CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

19 FRIDAY NIGHT DRIVE / PREP FOOTBALL 2019 Northwest Herald / NWHerald.com • Thursday, August 29, 2019

PLAYERS TO WATCH (Note: Players highlighted in the Northwest Herald’s “5 to Watch” were not included here.) Cole Davis, Marengo, jr., WR/DB Marengo’s 5-foot-10, 160-pound receiver led the KRC in receiving yards (739) last year as a sophomore to go with 10 touchdowns on 50 catches. He is expected to have a big impact for the Indians on both offense and defense again this year. Jagger Ferden, Marengo, sr., OL/DL Committed to FCS Division I Western Illinois, Ferden should be one of the top linemen in the KRC. He is one of three returning starters on the offensive line for the defending conference champions. Nick Legnaioli, Richmond-Burton, jr., LB/RB/K “Nicky Legs” was an All-KRC performer a year ago because of his versatility. He should be one of the top kickers in the area this season, as well as a top linebacker. He also rushed for more than 300 yards on offense. Jacob McKinney, Johnsburg, sr., RB Johnsburg’s leading rusher returns from last season after piling up more than 900 yards and 13 touchdowns. McKinney should provide some speed, while fellow running back Justin Peake is a more sizable, physical back. Justin Peake, Johnsburg, sr., LB/RB A wrestling state medalist, Peake is a physical linebacker who proved a valuable running back in short-yardage situations last season. He will resume both of those roles this season for the Skyhawks. Michael Purkey, Woodstock, sr., QB The senior quarterback is the top returning passer in the conference after throwing for 1,214 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. In completing 62.8% of his passes in 2018, Purkey was one of the most accurate QBs in the area. Jacob Stanley, Harvard, jr., QB As a sophomore last season, Stanley rushed for 446 yards and seven touchdowns on 107 carries. He also threw for 582 yards. Harvard showed improvement last season and a steady presence at QB should help further that improvement in 2019. Dalton Wood, Richmond-Burton, sr., LB/RB Wood was one of the top tacklers for the Rockets last season. He also rushed for more than 1,100 yards and totaled nine touchdowns on the offensive end.

Harvard quarterback Jacob Stanley Matthew Apgar – mapgar@shawmedia.com

He should play a pivotal role on both sides of the ball. Ryan Zinnen, Woodstock North, sr., QB/DB Zinnen rushed for more than 800 yards last season from the QB position. He should be a focal point for the Thunder offense again. He also plays a key role in the North secondary on defense.

2018 KRC STANDINGS

Team Conf. Overall Marengo 6-0 9-3 Richmond-Burton 5-1 11-2 Johnsburg 4-2 7-4 Woodstock North 3-3 5-5 Burlington Central 2-4 3-6 Harvard 1-5 2-7 Woodstock 0-6 2-7

PIVOTAL GAMES Richmond-Burton at Marengo, 7 p.m., Sept. 27 One point separated these two teams last year. That was the difference in the conference title race. The teams will square off again in Week 5 this season. Richmond-Burton at Johnsburg, 7 p.m., Oct. 18 Last year, R-B picked up its first win against Johnsburg since 2015. These rivals are always near the top of the conference standings, and the title

could be on the line when they meet in Week 8. Marengo at Woodstock North, 7 p.m., Oct. 18 The Thunder could be a dark-horse contender in the KRC. Both teams close out the KRC schedule in Week 8. If the Indians were to win their first four conference games – no sure thing – this would be a challenging finale.

TOP CONTENDERS Johnsburg In the short, three-year history of the KRC, last season was the first year in which the Skyhawks didn’t win the conference. Johnsburg still should have a say in the matter in 2019. Marengo The Indians proved everyone wrong last year and ran through the conference schedule unbeaten. Powered by running back and linebacker Finn Schirmer, Marengo returns with high expectations. Richmond-Burton A one-point loss to Marengo was the only blemish on R-B’s regular-season résumé. The Rockets will be hungry to avenge that loss and hope to hold the conference crown at season’s end.

KRC Offensive Player of the Year Mike Kaufman has graduated, but R-B returns four of its top six rushers: Dalton Wood, Nick Legnaioli, Tyler Anderson and Logan Hutson. • QB Jacob Huber (6-0, 175) started every game after Week 3 in 2018. Now, the junior returns to lead a passing game that Noll expects to be “significantly improved.” Hutson (6-1, 175) was R-B’s top receiver last year (14 catches, 171 yards) and should be a top target again. • Sophomore Brock Wood (6-0, 195) could be a newcomer to watch at RB/ LB. Junior TE Jacob Petersen (6-4, 205) should present Huber with a sizable target. • The Rockets were the top defense in

the KRC in 2018. Anderson, Legnaioli and Wood will patrol the middle in the linebacker positions. Wood was a leading tackler for the Rockets. Logan Grant (6-4, 282) returns at nose guard and Hutson is a returning starter at DB.

MUST-WATCH GAME Johnsburg and Richmond-Burton square off twice this season, but it will be the Week 8 matchup that counts in the Kishwaukee River Conference standings. That late-October matchup could have huge implications for both teams.

with varsity experience. OL/DL Dawson Peter brings experience to the line. Peter was a bass fishing state qualifier in the spring. • Lesniak said OL/DL Mike Ambroz, WR Forest Hull and LB Josh Peschke are key newcomers to watch for the Skyhawks.

MUST-WATCH GAME Marian Central and Johnsburg provided last year’s most exciting Week 1 game, with the Hurricanes edging the Skyhawks, 14-13. Once again, the nonconference foes will square off in the opening week.

MARENGO INDIANS QUICK HITS Coach: Paul Forsythe (3rd season, 11-10) 2018 record: 9-3, 6-0 KRC Fast fact: Marengo was the surprise of the KRC last year, going from 2-7 in 2017 to conference champion and state quarterfinalist in 2018.

SCOUTING REPORT

HARVARD HORNETS QUICK HITS Coach: Sean Saylor (sixth season, 8-37) 2018 record: 2-7 Fast fact: Harvard’s two wins last season marked its first wins in regulation (not by forfeit) since 2015. The Hornets have not made the playoffs since 2013.

SCOUTING REPORT • Both of Harvard’s top two leading rushers last season were sophomores who return for their junior seasons: RB Dylan Perkins and QB Jacob Stanley. Perkins led the Hornets with 527 yards and four touchdowns on 101 carries. Stanley went for 446 yards and seven scores on 107 carries. • Harvard has added one wrinkle: RB Damon Mueller will take over at fullback, and Perkins will move over to the wing back position. • OL Alex Rodriguez returns at center. He also started as a sophomore, so the quarterback and center positions already have a level of familiarity with each other. OL-DL Marco Vazquez and Anthony Palella also are starting linemen who return. • “Consistency, both sides of the ball,” Saylor said. “We have three guys returning on the offensive line,

that’s going to be huge. [We were] so young and trying to grow by fire with back-to-back years of five seniors, it’s been extremely difficult to be consistent.” • Even though the 2-7 record didn’t look like much, Harvard was much improved in 2018. The Hornets hung around in losses to Burlington Central, 25-13, Johnsburg, 33-21, and Woodstock North, 26-14, in the last three games of the season.

MUST-WATCH GAME McHenry County’s oldest rivalry will mark its 100th year when Harvard and Marengo square off on Oct. 4. Marengo has won the last five meetings between the two.

• RB-LB Finn Schirmer (6-1, 205) holds three Division I offers. Colleges are most interested in him as a linebacker, but he should be one of the area’s best running backs, as well. He totaled more than 1,700 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns in 2018. • Western Illinois commit Jagger Ferden (6-5, 250) leads the Indians in the trenches. OL Jonah Pace (6-5, 230) and Sean Trainor (5-11, 185) are other returning starters on the line. • WR-DB Cole Davis (5-10, 160) led the KRC in receiving yards last season with 739 yards and 10 touchdowns on 50 catches. • Mitchell Kunde (6-0, 160) won the starting QB job in camp over Zach Trotz (6-4, 180). before the season. • Trainor and Schirmer are returning starters at linebacker. Forsythe said he expects Ferden to be a force at defensive tackle. Pace will line up at defensive end. “We have more guys to rotate in on our defensive front than we did a year ago,” Forsythe said.

MUST-WATCH GAME A missed extra point cost Richmond-Burton in a 14-13 loss to Marengo last year. The two KRC foes will square off again in Week 5, possibly with the top spot in the conference on the line again.

ILLINOIS 8-MAN FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION QUICK HITS Coach: John Lalor (17th season, 10260) 2018 record: 6-4; I8FA runner-up Fast fact: The Illinois 8-Man Football Association is now up to 16 teams, 14 of which are eligible for the I8FA playoffs (schools with enrollments of more than 400 students are not eligible). All 14 playoff-eligible teams will automatically qualify for a postseason berth.

CCL/ESCC PURPLE DIVISION

MARIAN CENTRAL HURRICANES QUICK HITS Coach: Darren Fortin (first season) 2018 record: 3-6, 1-6 ESCC Fast fact: In the new Chicago Catholic League/East Suburban Catholic Conference, Marian’s opponents in the Purple Division will be St. Viator, Carmel and St. Patrick. The schedule also allows for various crossover games with other divisions.

SCOUTING REPORT • First-year head coach Darren Fortin has served as a Marian assistant coach for 30 years. He was a linebacker on Marian’s 1983 Class 2A state championship team and went on to play in college at Villanova. • Marian struggled the second half of last season, losing its final five regular-season games to finish 3-6 and miss the postseason. Former coach Mike Maloney now coaches at Grayslake Central. • RB Luke Rogers led the Hurricanes with 682 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 127 carries in 2018. He returns for his senior year with almost two full seasons of starting experience under his belt. • Fortin said Marian will feature more of a power running game this season, with the goal of controlling the

• The numbers game is a struggle for Alden-Hebron this season. Lalor said the Giants have only 12 players in the program. The Giants have four starters back from last year’s team, which was the I8FA runner-up. • Because of the low number of players, the team has done a lot of drills and 1-on-1 work in practice. Lalor, who has spearheaded the 8-man movement in Illinois, isn’t worried about navigating practice with such a low turnout. “It’s no different than years past when we were trying to play 11-man,” Lalor said. • The Giants have not named a starting quarterback yet. Thomas Webber and Parker Elswick each could play the position. Both are also capable running backs. • OL Zach Herring will provide some

experience at the center position. OL Tyler Cunningham could play guard or tight end. Lalor said Cunningham has gotten a lot stronger in the offseason. • LB-RB-TE Christian Henderson will “play all over the field for us,” Lalor said. He will likely line up at middle linebacker on defense.

MUST-WATCH GAME Alden-Hebron lost the inaugural 8-man championship game to the Milford-Cissna Park in 2018. The Giants will square off with the defending champs again in Week 5. Milford-Cissna Park defeated A-H twice last year, once in the regular season and again in the title game.

possession. Fortin will serve as the team’s defensive coordinator. • DL-TE Brian Allen and DL-OL Jayden Thiergood will present an imposing one-two punch on the Marian defensive line. LB Austin Geils is an experienced middle linebacker. WR-DB Bryce Shelton, WR-DB Harrison Stanko, WR-DB Tom Novakoski and RB-DB Carter Dolter will play key roles in the defensive secondary.

MUST-WATCH GAME Marian has had numerous close battles with St. Patrick in recent years. The CCL/ESCC Purple title could be on the line when they meet in Week 9, as could playoff positioning.
