The nutritional value of popular types of fish

Fish is an important component of a healthy diet. Compared to many other sources of protein, including beef, pork and chicken, certain varieties of fish are lower in calories per serving size. Plus, fish is an important source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to heart and brain health.

The American Heart Association recommends that people eat at least two servings of fish each week. Knowing how various types of fish stack up when compared to one another can help people decide which fish to include in their diets. The following is some nutritional information on some popular types of fish, courtesy of the United States Department of Agriculture. Nutritional information for raw fish is based on a standard three-ounce serving size.

• Cod: (Pacific): 70 calories, 0.54 grams fat, 15.22 grams protein

• Flounder: 78 calories, 1.02 grams fat, 16.02 grams protein

• Haddock: 74 calories, 0.61 grams fat, 16.36 grams protein

• Halibut: (Atlantic and Pacific): 94 calories, 1.95 grams fat, 17.69 grams protein

• Mahi mahi: 72 calories, 0.60 grams fat, 15.72 grams protein

• Ocean perch: 81 calories, 1.38 grams fat, 15.84 grams protein

• Salmon (farmed): 156 calories, 9.22 grams fat, 16.92 grams protein

• Tilapia: 81 calories, 1.44 grams fat, 17.07 grams protein

• Tuna: 93 calories, 0.81 grams fat, 19.89 grams protein

The way fish is prepared can alter its nutritional profile. Baking, grilling or broiling without adding fat are the most healthy ways to prepare fish. Enhance the flavor of fish with fresh herbs and citrus marinades. HM221604

Interesting facts about

ice cream

Perhaps no food is as universally beloved as ice cream. Though people may dispute which ethnic cuisine reigns supreme or which region produces the most delicious barbecue or which city makes the best pizza, ice cream inspires no such debate. It’s simply loved by people of all ages and from all walks of life.

Ice cream is a go-to dessert for people across the globe, and those individuals may be interested in learning more about this beloved confection.

The International Dairy Foods Association notes that the origins of ice cream can be traced at least as far back as the second century BC. Though the precise origins of ice cream are not known, the first ice cream parlor in the United States opened in 1790. PBS notes that President George Washington was especially fond of the frozen treat.

Many people prefer their ice cream served in cones, and they can thank any one of a number of individuals who may be responsible for the invention of the ice cream cone. According to the Library of Congress, various accounts suggest Charles E. Menches is the inventor of the ice cream cone, which he first offered for sale at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. Ernest Hamwi, Abe Doumar, Albert and Nick Kabbaz, Arnold Fornachou, and David Avayou are some others who have been credited with inventing the ice cream cone.

The Dairy Alliance reports that three gallons of milk are required to produce a single gallon of ice cream. That means one cow can produce between two and three gallons of ice cream per day.

Ice cream afficionados span the globe, but the World Atlas reports that no country consumes more ice cream per capita than New Zealand. New Zealand is reportedly renowned for producing high-quality dairy products, which might be one rea son why the average New Zealander con sumes 28.4 liters of ice cream per year. The United States (20.8 liters per year per person) and Aus tralia (18 liters) are next in line behind New Zealand.

Chocolate reigns supreme as the most popular ice cream flavor in the world. So says an analysis of data from Lexham Insurance conducted by The Food Channel®. That data represents figures from 121 countries and found that vanilla, mint chocolate chip, cookie dough, and buttered pecan round out the top five ice cream flavors across the globe.

According to Ben & Jerry’s, the new ice cream texture that develops after a pint melts and then re-freezes is the result of microscopic air bubbles that keep ice cream soft and fluffy. That air escapes when ice cream melts, and since it’s gone when the ice cream refreezes, the result is a product that’s no longer as soft as it was intended to be. TF237130

Signature dishes

of popular cuisines

North America is a cultural melting pot. People who emigrate to the United States and Canada bring many different traditions with them, and food is perhaps the quickest and simplest way for such individuals to share their cultures with their new neighbors.

Certain cultures are known for the foods they eat, and various dishes have come to embody many countries’ cuisines. The following are some signature meals from around the world.

People can travel the world by enjoying various ethnic cuisines at local restaurants.

RATATOUILLE: FRANCE

Ratatouille is a classic French recipe that originated in Nice. It uses fresh, seasonal vegetables, which are thinly sliced and layered to form a casserole. Topped with a rich, tomato-based sauce, this rustic country dish is a one-pan meal.

SOUVLAKI: GREECE

The word “souvlaki” is derived from the Ancient Greek word “souvla,” which means skewer. Evidence suggests this dish dates back to 2000 BC. It is typically made from small cubes of meat that are grilled and eaten off the skewer. The meat used most often in Greece is pork, but chicken, lamb and beef also can be used.

CRACKED CONCH: BAHAMAS

A visit to this tropical nation will have people eating conch in a number of different ways. The hallmark version, however, is cracked conch, which is breaded and deep-fried. The name of the dish comes from the method of tenderizing the chewy shellfish, which involves hitting it with a mallet or frying pan.

FEIJOADA: BRAZIL

Feijoada is made with black beans, cuts of pork and organ meat mixed into a stew. The popular dish is affordable because it uses less costly cuts of meat that need to stew to tenderize.

XIAO LONG BAO: TAIWAN

This soup dumpling is one of the most famous foods of Taiwan. Believed to have originated in Shanghai, the dish eventually made its way to Taiwanese cuisine. The Xia Long Bao is a thin-skinned flour dumpling filled with a pork meatball and gelatinized meat stock.

HARIRA: MOROCCO

Harira is a Moroccan soup traditionally served during Ramadan or also enjoyed by Moroccan Jews to end their fasts during Yom Kippur. The recipe calls for chickpeas or other beans, onions, rice, bits of meat (not pork), tomatoes, beaten eggs, and olive oil.

PAELLA: SPAIN

Spain’s most popular dish is paella. It is a rich seafood or meat stew with rice and flavored with saffron. It’s traditionally cooked over an open fire in a shallow, flatbottom pan.

DOSA: INDIA

Dosa is a type of pancake made from fermented rice batter poured to make a crêpe. It is usually stuffed with potato and served along with chutneys and sambar, a vegetable stew.
