MICHAEL URBANEC murbanec@shawmedia.com 815-431-4041 The Streator fireworks will take place at about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, at Streator High School football field and this year’s show has been updated to have something for everyone. Terry Trenor, of the Streator 4th of July Committee, said the lineup of music has changed but the classics are still there and the theme will remain true to its traditional fireworks roots. Trenor said the committee is spending just about $48,000 on this year’s show and they want to keep it in balance with the rest of the entertainment that has been brought in. “Some towns are just OK with focusing on the fireworks, but we want to put on a good show all-around,” Trenor said. “When you’re spending what we are on entertainment, we’re making sure we put on a real nice show and we want to be entertaining.” Streator’s 4th of July fireworks are put on by Melrose Pyrotechnics, the same company in charge of the Chicago White Sox fireworks display that blasts off whenever they hit a home run. Music for the fireworks can be heard on 95.3 Jack FM. The Auto Lotto helps fund the fireworks. Tickets are $20. The drawing is held at 4 p.m. Thursday July 4, at the Streator City Park’s Plumb Pavilion. First prize gets the choice of $14,000 cash or one of the vehicles. Second, third and fourth place prizes are $500. ach year on July 4, Americans celebrate the birth of their nation and independence from Great Britain. This day marks the anniversary of the presentation and acceptance of the Declaration of Independence, signed 242 years ago on July 4, 1776.
Another way to commemorate Independence Day is to educate oneself about the many historical and entertaining facts that surround the day. The following are some interesting details about the origins of Independence Day and the celebrations that surround it.
The Declaration of Independence began as a letter to Britain’s King George to explain why the Continental Congress was interested in declaring independence from Great Britain. The writing of the declaration began on July 2 and the final wording was established on July 4.
O Although 56 people
Independence Day is full of opportunities to celebrate and enjoy oneself. Parades, fireworks, parties, barbecues, and much more are part of the festivities.
eventually signed the Declaration of Independence, only John Hancock signed the document on July 4, 1776. The rest added their names later on. John Hancock’s signature is ornate and widely recognized. Putting your “John Hancock on a document has become synonymous with the process of signing something.
O The Declaration of
Independence was adopted while the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Statehouse. That building is now known as
Independence Hall.
O The original 13 American
OThe average age of the
signers of the Declaration of Independence was 45. The youngest person to sign was Thomas Lynch, Jr., who was 27 when he signed the document. Benjamin Franklin, at age 70, was the oldest signee.
OJohn Adams and Thomas
Jefferson were the only signees who went on to serve as presidents. Coincidentally, Jefferson and Adams both died on July 4, 1826, within hours of each other.
O Philadelphia is the birth
place of much American history and is home to the Liberty Bell. Each Independence Day, the Liberty Bell is tapped (not rung, as the vibration would further damage the cracked bell) 13 times in honor of the original 13 American colonies.
colonies were located all along the eastern seaboard. They include Virgina, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.
O The stars on the original
American flag were placed in a circle. This was so all of the colonies would be equally represented.
O Independence was gained
in 1776, and the first celebration took place in Philadelphia four days later. The White House held its first Independence Day festivities in 1801.
O The only copy of the
engrossed and signed Declaration of Independence is in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

Competition open to 15 acts The Times Staff The fireworks display at the Streator High School football field is Streator 4th of July’s main show. But there’s a show before the show that’s definitely worth catching — or even participating in. The Red, White, Blue and You Talent Show, sponsored by 95.3 Jack FM, is scheduled
for 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, prior to the fireworks show. The competition features cash prizes of $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place. The acts will be judged on a scale of 1 to 10 in four categories: audience response, stage appearance, originality and personality. Contestants also will receive a score on a scale of 1 to 20 for
overall performance. In the event of a tie, the act receiving the most number of 10s on their score sheet wins. If no 10s were awarded, the next highest score will be used to determine a winner. To sign up, visit ottawaradio.net. The contest is open to the first 15 acts — either individuals or groups — to register. All contestants must check in by 6:30 p.m. July 3. For more information, call Kathy Missel at 815-434-6050, ext. 214, or email kmissel@ nrgmedia.com.
