Los Angeles Lakers head to Phoenix as preseason slowly wraps up

The Los Angeles Lakers continue their NBA preseason action as they get set to take on the Phoenix Suns Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, with all the action broadcast live on TNT.

Entering the 2024-25 campaign with a new head coach and a fresh sense of optimism despite making little to no moves during the offseason, the Lakers will be looking to go even further in the postseason after an early first-round exit last season against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets. Replacing coach Darvin Ham for the new season will be former NBA guard JJ Redick, who is entering his first season as an NBA head coach.

Another new face — also entering his first season as a Laker — is 23-year-old North Dakota native Dalton Knecht, the 17th pick in the

Birthdate: April 19, 2001 (23)

Birthplace: Fargo, North Da-

first round of the 2024 NBA Draft.

Projected to be a lottery pick, Knecht dropped to 17th, largely due to his older age at 23. But that didn’t seem to discourage the 202324 SEC Player of the Year, as he went on to average 21.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 45.8% from the field and 39.7% from three-point range.

Knechts’ shooting consistency is exactly what the Lakers need coming off last season, where they struggled with a league-second-worst 29.9% from three-point range.

Additionally, the Lakers will once again enter another NBA season with limited depth on the bench, something that may plague the team down the stretch of a grueling 82-game NBA regular season. Hopefully, with new faces and a fresh sense of leadership, the Lakers can wrap up their final stretch of the preseason on a strong note.

Reba McEntire’s comedy return: NBC opens ‘Happy’s Place’

Reba McEntire is in a happy place, in more ways than one.

The country music icon’s acting career has endured, confirmed in large part by the repeats of her first sitcom, “Reba,” that continue on Hallmark Channel, CMT and UPtv. She hits many of the same notes — along with one of the same co-stars — as she returns to comedy series work in “Happy’s Place,” which NBC debuts Friday, Oct. 18.

Also continuing as a coach on Season 26 of NBC’s “The Voice,” McEntire now plays sassy, strong-willed Bobbie, who gets multiple surprises as “Happy’s Place” begins. She learns that she has inherited her late father’s restaurant (which gives the program its title), and also that she has a partner in running it: Isabella (played by Belissa Escobedo, “Blue Beetle,” 2023), the half-sister she didn’t know she had.

Their business views differ frequently, and trying to help moderate those are the site’s staff: bartender Gabby (fellow “Reba” alum Melissa Peterman), cook Emmett (Rex Linn, who also worked with McEntire on “Big Sky”), waiter Takoda (Tokala Black Elk, “Yellowstone”) and accountant Steve (Pablo Castelblanco, “Alaska Daily”).

“We all said, ‘Yes, let’s go for it!’,” McEntire recalls of embracing “Happy’s Place”

when the idea was presented initially. “I love the sitcom genre. Out of all the things I get to do, this is my favorite, because it’s camaraderie. It’s fun. You just get to go to work and play, and it’s creative. It’s very comforting to me. I absolutely love it, and to get to work with these folks? That’s icing on the cake.”

A three-time Grammy winner and Kennedy Center Honors recipient, McEntire has brought along several former “Reba” executive producers — Kevin Abbott, Mindy Schultheis and Michael Hanel — as she shares that title with them on “Happy’s Place.” Abbott’s wife, Julie, is billed similarly, having come up with the show’s concept. Executive producer Kevin Abbott, who is doing much of the writing for “Happy’s Place,” is comfortable in reteaming with McEntire. “I’ve worked with a lot of people,” he says, “and I have never worked with anybody who has such immense talent in so many areas and yet still keeps a spirit of humility and graciousness and gratitude [that] makes coming to work with her just a joy. It’s very easy for me to write for her, for whatever reason. I sync up very well with her attitudes and the way she looks at life.”

The same goes for co-star Peterman, who has kept a link to McEntire via the Lifetime movie “The Hammer” (2023) and the recurring roles they both had on CBS’s “Young Sheldon.” Also the host of the syndicated game show “Person, Place or Thing,” Peterman confirms of McEntire: “We’ve never really left each other. [‘Reba’] ended, and we’ve been friends ever since. We’ve done other things together. I got to go on tour with her and open the show and do stand-up, and we vacation together. We hang out, and we just were waiting for another project so we could actually go to work together again.”

The NCIS team hits the ground running as they head out on a tense search for a missing undercover agent during an active hostage situation.

Starring Rocky Carroll, Sean Murray, Diona Reasonover, Katrina Law, Wilmer Valderrama, Brian Dietzen and Gary Cole, Season 22 of “NCIS” kicks off Monday, Oct. 14, on CBS. Behind on the action? Catch up on the previous season of the show at www.cbs.com/shows/video/ jx1Cu8VGN0Qs2PUJDgifU2_P1gqXiQq_/

George Clooney

Q: I see that the series “Sisters” is streaming now. I know George Clooney was in it, but which character did he play?

A: We can confirm that it wasn’t one of the sisters … though with his famous sense of humor, George Clooney might have given that a try if that opportunity had been presented to him. The drama series, which ran on NBC from 1991 to 1996, is now available to stream via the service Plex. Clooney appeared during the fourth and fifth rounds of the show’s six-season run, playing James Falconer, a police detective who became involved with the program’s central family when he investigated an assault on one of its members.

Teddy (portrayed by Sela Ward) eventually was Falconer’s love interest, with their connection advanced and strengthened by the fact that they both were recovering alcoholics. He had a tragic personal past, for sure, and that background gave Clooney plenty of opportunity to show how he handled dramatic material. That was notable since much of his television work preceding that was in the comedy realm (“The Facts of Life,” “Roseanne,” etc.).

We won’t say much more about Falconer’s story here, for the benefit of those who aren’t familiar with “Sisters” and may want to check it out. Clooney stayed with NBC and production company Warner Bros. Television by segueing into the medical drama “ER,” which cemented his stardom with his portrayal of Dr. Doug Ross. His career after that is the stuff of show-business history, encompassing two Oscar wins (for his acting in 2005’s “Syriana” and his producing of 2012’s “Argo”) but no Primetime Emmy Awards as of yet.

Daniel Craig

Q: Did Daniel Craig actually play a stormtrooper in a Star Wars movie? Also, when’s he giving us another Knives Out movie?

A: You raise two hard-to-believe facts here: one, that an actor of Daniel Craig’s (“Skyfall,” 2012) caliber would take a faceless, one-scene role in a Star Wars movie; and two, that it takes this long to make a Knives Out movie.

But incredibly, both are true. Craig, in fact, requested the role in “Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens” (2015). At the time, he was shooting “Spectre” (2015), his fourth outing as legendary superspy James Bond,

and that film shared some crew with “The Force Awakens,” including second assistant director Ben Dixon.

In his usual clipped English, he told Britain’s Daily Express newspaper that it all came together pretty easily. “I said to Ben, I said, ‘Part for me?’” And he was like, ‘Are you serious?’ I was like, ‘Yeah.’ And he went, ‘I’ll go ask J.J. [Abrams, director of “The Force Awakens”],’ And he came back and said, ‘Yeah.’”

That makes three mega-franchises Craig was a part of in the ‘10s. Because just four years later, he starred in “Knives Out,” a distinctly American take on

the cozy mystery genre. A sequel followed — 2022’s “Glass Onion” — but a year before that was even released, it was announced that there would be a third film as well.

That movie, “Wake Up Dead Man,” is due out sometime in 2025 (that’s the less-than-specific word from Netflix, which is producing and distributing it).

And so, by the time it’s released, it will have been four years between the announcement of the film and its final release. However, it will only be three years between the second and third films in the franchise, which matches the gap between the first two.

Q: I know that Luke is only a part-time character on “Fire Country,” but I’d love to see more of the actor. What else has he been doing?

A: California-born actor Michael Trucco’s star started rising quickly almost the minute he graduated theater school in the late ‘90s. He’s been working steadily, mostly on TV, ever since.

Even with his role as Luke in CBS’s buzzy action-drama “Fire Country,” Trucco is still probably best known for his two-and-a-half-season run as a star in beloved sci-fi series “Battlestar Galactica” in the late ‘00s.

As you say, “Fire Country” is only a part-time commitment for Trucco. In the meantime, he’s also continued a couple of other recurring roles — one in the ABC medical drama “The Good Doctor” and one in ABC’s cop show “The Rookie” (which, when added to his firefighter role in “Fire Country,” gets him a first-responder bingo).

He’s also become part of the unofficial acting troupe employed by director Mike Flanagan (“The Haunting of Hill House”). Trucco appeared in all eight episodes of Flanagan’s 2023 miniseries “The Fall of the House of Usher” and has a role in his feature-length sci-fi drama “The Life of Chuck,” which recently debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival, ahead of getting wider distribution.

And he’s maintaining that busy pace — he’s currently in pre-production on the indie sci-fi film “The Last Transport,” which reunites him with his old “Battlestar” castmate Katee Sackhoff (“Riddick,” 2013).

Trust in Travis: Famous footballer hosts ‘Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?’ spinoff

Thrusting NFL superstar Travis Kelce (“Grotesquerie”) into an even bigger spotlight, the all-new Amazon MGM Studios Original series “Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?” makes its debut Wednesday, Oct. 16, on Prime Video.

According to its description, “‘Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?’ offers a fun, new twist on the premise of the original popular format. Hosted by Travis Kelce, each game will welcome an adult contestant who will rely on a classroom full of celebrities from comedy, screen and sports to help them answer 11 questions on a range of subjects, pulled from elementary curriculum, in an effort to win a $100,000 prize.

“Rather than compete against the stars, contestants enlist their help and, in some cases, can even ‘cheat’ off of them. And on the final question, worth $100,000, the contestant selects one celebrity to discuss the answer with before locking in. The final question is always at the sixth-grade level.”

For this inaugural season of gameplay, Kelce will be joined by some steadfast co-workers from the entertainment business, with episodes including celebrity classmates such as Nikki Glaser (“FBoy Island”),

Natasha Leggero (“He’s Just Not That Into You,” 2009), Nicole Byer (“*Loosely Exactly Nicole”), Ron Funches (“Loot”), “NFL Thursday Night Football” analyst Ryan Fitzpatrick, former NFL wide receiver Chad Ochocinco Johnson (“I Am Athlete”), Garcelle Beauvais (“Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”), Lala Kent (“Vanderpump Rules”), Sophia Rose Stallone (“The Family Stallone”) and multi-hyphenate Lilly Singh (“A Little Late With Lilly Singh”).

Still, it’s a big undertaking for the footballer, as he continues his career in the NFL and doubles as a game show host. But clearly, it’s nothing he can’t handle.
