You may not know Matthew Klein, but if you’ve ever watched aerial videos of the Illinois Valley, it’s likely you’re familiar with his work. For the last few years, Klein, a senior at La SallePeru High School, has immersed himself in drone photography and video — shooting several nature videos and videos of local cities, as well as videos for businesses, nonprofits and events. He posts them to his Facebook page, fb.com/ matthewkleinfilms. “I just thought it was cool to see the world from a different perspective,” Klein said of his decision to purchase a drone two years ago. “I can stand right here and I can see everything around me.” In February 2017, he submitted a video for a contest with the Chicago Cubs to win the opportunity to serve as ring bearer at the Matthew Klein, a La Salle-Peru High School senior, can be found around town with his drone when school isn’t in session. ring ceremony for the 2016 World Series Champions. Staff members for Dr. William Vesely’s dental office include (from left): Pam Spencer, Danielle Wright, Valerie Vesley and Dr. William Vesley. His office provides comprehensive, all-phase dental care for people of all ages.
Dr. Vesely keeps smiles alive in dentistry practice This year marks the 36th anniversary of Dr. William C. Vesely becoming a Doctor of Dentistry. The popular South Side Ottawa dentist graduated from the University of Illinois school of dental surgery in 1981 after earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Marquette University in 1976. For decades, Dr. Vesely has been one of Ottawa’s most successful practitioners of family and general dentistry, attracting patients from all over the Illinois Valley. His office has provided comprehensive, allphase dental care for people of all ages. Dr. Vesely believes, no matter what your age, most people can benefit from new options in dentistry that promote good oral health and improve the cosmetic appearance of a person’s teeth. Due to many recent advances in dentistry, many people may not be aware of several new alternatives that could dramatically benefit anyone’s smile. His practice participates in cosmetic dentistry and he prides himself in gentle, caring, thorough

examinations and treatments in a friendly and comfortable environment. The family-oriented dentist services include: • Root canals • Crown and dentures • Emergency service with evening hours available • Digital X-rays • Implant restorations • Whiteners • Cosmetic bonding and veneers Only a generation ago, it was normal for the majority of seniors in the U.S. to lose all their teeth,
replacing them with dentures. Now, only a few decades later, most older Americans keep most of their teeth for their entire lives. This is a major achievement of modern dental practices and the work of professionals like Dr. Vesely. Dr. Vesely’s staff works to develop a relationship with each patient. They listen to concerns and provide all with personal attention and custom care. And dentistry education never ends for his staff so his office can provide cuttingedge technology and the latest techniques. Patient comfort is of most importance to Dr. Vesely. His exam rooms have flat screen TVs in them to help take the patient’s mind off the procedure. There is also a television located in the waiting room along with complimentary coffee. The doctor also has nitrous oxide, (aka laughing gas) available for those who might be a little nervous. Whenever you have questions or concerns about caring for your teeth or gums, or about improving the appearance of your smile, talk with Dr. Vesely first.
Woodhill Cabinetry offers creative space planning
Ellen Bussert relaxes in her new kitchen designed and built by Woodhill Cabinetry. Seated with her is Mary Jean Sweeney of Woodhill. National surveys have revealed homeowners consider design and outcome to be the chief sources of satisfaction with their remodeling projects. With years of experience, the expert designers at Woodhill Cabinetry know the right questions to ask their clients to ensure that their cabinet layout for kitchens, baths, utility rooms, home offices and other areas of the house will provide the best use of space and the most functionality for residents. Route 23, Ottawa, was founded in 1997 by the Sweeney family of Sheridan, which has been in the business of custom cabinet manufacturing since 1974. A long history in Streator Streator Home Building & Loan Association was formed Aug. 11, 1894 — a short 12 years after Streator was incorporated as a city. The Association was formed by a group of Streator men for the purpose of building and improving homesteads. The request was granted on Aug. 15, 1894, to D. Heenan, B.T. Keating, C.D. Chalfant, P.W. Hays, J.F. Dicus, C.R. Taylor, and W.H. Boys. The original office was housed in the building of B.T. Keating at 126 Main St. on the second floor. B.T. Keating was the first managing officer, serving from 1894 to 1926. By the 1930s Streator Home had to decide how it was going to handle the Great Depression. With no new loans or savings accounts and the difficulty of not being able to deposit at the local banks, there were some difficult decisions to be made. With many customers unable to make their payments, the Association was constantly reducing payments or foreclosing on property. With these and other hardships to endure, the Association was in very bad shape; and, it was suggested by two other local savings and loans that the Association should cease operations. This only enticed the Board of Directors to pursue their efforts even more in

keeping the Association afloat. As time progressed, the Association’s assets continued to grow as did its customer base. By the late 1970s, Streator Home had long outgrown its facility. The Board of Directors decided to purchase the old YMCA and demolish that building in order to use that site for its new building. In the summer of 1980, Streator Home Building & Loan Association moved to its current location at 132 S. Monroe St. In 2013 the bank completed an addition and renovation project that expanded the building to accommodate a new Board room and a conference room. The parking lot was also resurfaced. In 2013, Streator Home Building & Loan Association was one of only two surviving Savings & Loans in the State of Illinois. The State of Illinois expressed interest in eliminating the Savings

& Loan Act. As a result, Streator Home Building & Loan Association became a savings bank under the laws of the State of Illinois. In March of 2015, Streator Home Building
& Loan Association, SB officially changed its name to Streator Home Savings Bank. Today, Streator Home Savings Bank continues to uphold its original purpose
of building and improving homesteads. We are dedicated to helping the people in our community with mortgage and consumer loans. We also offer a variety of checking

she would like to share with you: - Keep up your vaccinations to stay healthy and to help prevent the spread of illnesses to others. - Hand washing is the best way to help prevent the spread of infections in health care settings, at home, and in the general public. - Becker also suggests that if an individual is going out in public and has an illness accompanied by a cough, to wear a mask to protect others from becoming ill. - If one who has an illness is planning on visiting a nursing home or hospital, wear a mask for the protection of the residents and staff. Jackie Latsch, Activity Director, states, “The La Salle County Nursing Home abides by a philosophy that supports the dignity, privacy and individuality of the residents we care for.” Latsch goes on to say “that the purpose of the Activity Department is to plan and organize individual and group activities to meet the social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs of each resident.”

Starting in March, JC Whitney will exhibit at leading Jeep and Truck events across the country showing off their latest project, a 2017 RAM 1500 4X4 customized with performance parts and accessories from JC Whitney sponsor brands including Aries Automotive, Crown Manufacturing, Curt Manufacturing, Powerstop Brakes and Rancho Suspension.
JC Whitney: Fulfilling America’s automotive needs yesterday, today and tomorrow The release of the Ford Model T in 1907 arguably jump-started America’s long love affair with the automobile. And the beginnings of JC Whitney was there right from the start. In 1915, the company’s founder, Israel Warshawsky, opened The Warshawsky Company in Chicago. It was a scrap metal yard that salvaged parts from old, disused automobiles to sell them to those who needed replacement parts. Ever the visionary, Warshawsky soon began to purchase failed auto manufacturers with an eye towards retail. He opened his own retail store and began adding new parts to his already growing inventory. The next big stage of our company’s growth came in 1934 when Warshawsky’s son, Roy, joined the company. At this time, the Warshawsky wholesale catalog, while very popular, saw distribution limited to the Chicago area. He proposed expanding their influence and soon ads inviting readers to trade in 25 cents for a giant auto parts catalog started popping up in publications like Popular Mechanics. Response was tremendous, and the JC Whitney catalog was on its way to achieving its status as a beloved reference for serious do-it-yourselfers and automobile enthusiasts. Roy took the helm from his father in 1943, as the Second World War was in full swing. His inspired leadership and sharp business acumen sustained them during the difficult and trying years of that war. When the guns ceased to fire and the cannons fell silent, JC Whitney enjoyed a booming business where most of the economy was still playing catch-up. As the catalog and loyal customer base began to grow, Roy and his company developed specialty catalogs that targeted specific and key market segment. Hands on and fired up, Roy often spent long hours developing and nurturing the policies and connections that make us who we are today. Indeed, he set the stage for the formulation of what is JC Whitney’s unspoken philosophy: Only the very best for our customers. It’s a fitting tribute to such a great man that, years after his passing, Roy Warshawsky’s company is still the market leader when it comes to product innovation and total customer satisfaction,

Shooting city videos is also what he loves shooting most, because it allows him to be creative and try new ideas. His video of Peru has more than 40,000 views. He noted he shot a video of Starved Rock State Park this winter that was a favorite on Facebook. “It’s nice, because you have Starved Rock right here. You really have so much nature to film.” In addition to school and his videos, Klein also finds time to be president of the Student Council, Future Business Leaders of America and L-P’s Renaissance Club. He’s also a member of choir and the computer club. It keeps him busy, but he feels he’s making a difference. “I enjoy doing it. I don’t feel it’s a chore. Some kids might say, ‘Oh, I have to go to this. I get to go to this.” When he was a sophomore, he suggested the idea of having local business people speak to students about their jobs. It’s a series that continues today and garners about 50 students in attendance after school. The Renaissance Club affects all students, promoting grades, attendance and behavior. The members offer incentive-based programs to promote those academic achievements. He motioned to his left where he and other seniors put their hand prints and signatures on a cafeteria wall to commit to graduating. Each year, they host a Renaissance Rally, the group’s biggest event of the year Renaissance cocoordinator Andrea Henry said Klein was an active participant in two national storyteller awards the club won, with the most recent award-winning video shot and edited by Klein. “He is one of a kind. Perseverance is a trait his mother, Jill Klein, also noted. “He’s very determined and very independent,” she said. “If he wants to do

Great experiences, lasting smiles at Ottawa Dental Laboratory March of 2018 marks the 81st anniversary of Ottawa Dental Laboratory. This third-generation, family owned and operated company has evolved to not only keep up with, but to out-pace the competition in the ever-changing landscape of such a dynamic industry. “We have to embrace the challenges of our industry and turn them into opportunities,” says Jim Caruso, President and Chief Administrative Officer. Through strategic planning and execution, the Ottawa Dental Laboratory tackles obstacles such as the economy, as well as domestic and global competition. Luke Caruso, III, President and Chief Operating Officer said, “We’re committed to the investment of new technology, new materials and product development to keep us on the cutting edge.” When founded in 1937 by Lucien “Tony” Caruso, the company was put on its path to success. Here we are 81 years later, and Ottawa Dental Laboratory deepens its mark in the Midwest with four dental laboratories in Ottawa, Ill., Chicago, Ill., Bloomington, Ill. and South Bend, Ind. Under the leadership of the Caruso family, there are many new and exciting plans under way. One of the most exciting is the construction of a new building. It will become the second location in the Ottawa area and oversee all digital production. The original building will become the center for analog production. Construction will commence this spring. In today’s world, it takes more than creating the best product to remain successful. “We’re proud of our quality products, complimented with our personal service, none of which would be possible without the employees at Ottawa Dental Laboratory. Our number one company asset is our people which is why we put a significant focus on their health and well-being,” says Jim Caruso. The Ottawa Dental Laboratory provides a very generous health benefit plan with a progressive wellness program; one of the most unique and diverse

We feel if you want to have good people, you have to take care of them,” said Joanie Bretag, Sr. Vice President of Human Resources. This element of their culture has earned Ottawa Dental Laboratory nationwide recognition. Illinois’ Healthiest Employer award has been bestowed upon them by Crain’s Chicago Business on multiple occasions. They have also been listed as one of the top 100 employers in the nation. This recognition is a culmination of a highly selective assessment process, spanning the United States and includes companies of all sizes from all regions and industries. More than a decade after implementation of their health program, Ottawa Dental Laboratory’s health insurance premiums are down, even lower than they were in 2004. Due to employee participation for 2018, there was no increase in healthcare premiums. And that’s not all that’s down -- so is the number of employees with high blood pressure, which has drastically declined. Also lower are prescription medication costs and absenteeism. “Productivity and morale are up! It’s a real win all around,” says Bretag. As a team, Ottawa Dental Laboratory is also committed to charitable causes in the community. They are members of United Way’s Top 10 Club and have received numerous Gold Awards, honoring the level of employee participation. Ottawa Dental Laboratory employees also give generously on an annual basis to Freezin’-ForA-Reezin.’ In addition, Ottawa Dental Laboratory contributes to Donated Dental Services, a program through the Illinois Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped. From mentor to teacher Ottawa High senior leads by example
Jerrilyn Zavada jzavada@mywebtimes.com 815-673-6371 Megan Saar, a senior at Ottawa High School, remembers all too well what it was like to be a freshman. But as part of the school’s doChange Peer Mentor program, she was introduced through her freshman homeroom to upperclassmen who took students under their wing and helped them adjust to the life of a high school student. “I enjoyed walking through the hallway and being able to say hi and know who they were,” Saar remembers. “I appreciated them being able to help me out when I needed it and I wanted to do that for someone else.” As a junior, Saar was selected to become a Peer Mentor, a job she has taken on with pride for two years. In each freshman homeroom, three to four upperclassmen are assigned to help students feel comfortable, by playing games, doing activities and just being a sounding board. The school schedules homeroom five days a week. Peer Mentors spend four out of those five days in their assigned freshman homeroom.

Baldwin House provides comfortable lodging in Streator It seems all roads lead to Baldwin House and to Streator. This home provides area visitors a unique option for lodging accommodations in Streator. Baldwin House was built in 1880 and in 1947, Charles and Mildred Baldwin made 204 E. Kent St. their home. A familiar name in Streator, it invokes nostalgic memories of The Baldwin Market formerly located on west Route 18. Charles and Mildred lived in the house longer than any other occupant. Mr. Baldwin, age 90, passed away in 1989 and Mrs. Baldwin, age 89, in 1990. Guests from around the country and around the world have made Baldwin House their “Home away from Home” when traveling. Visitors to Starved Rock State Park, Route 66 travelers, and former Streatorites coming home are choosing Baldwin House for its comfortable and familyfriendly atmosphere. The house has been “home” to foreign visitors hailing from Bulgaria, Belgium, Argentina, the West Indies, Canada, Columbia, Korea, The Philippines and China just to name few. Proprietress Toni Pettit states “My goal is to exceed the expectations of my guests. Many visitors remark on the special touches they find throughout the house, in anticipation of their needs.” Unlike a bed and breakfast, it is a “Guest Home.” The entire first floor of the home is reserved by one group of guests rather than just a room. The house consists of two bedrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen and everyone’s favorite, the sun room. The kitchen is fully equipped with coffee, tea and continental breakfast items. There are books,

puzzles and games for all ages, toys and books for toddlers. In addition to the comfortable furnishings, WiFi, Direct TV and a
DVD player are available for guest use. The wrap around porch features a hanging porch swing and lawn furniture for outdoor
relaxation and front row seats to parades and park events. In addition to providing overnight accommodations, Baldwin House is thinking outside the box and can be reserved for special occasions. The spacious living room and dining room are perfect for bridal and baby showers, girls night out, family gatherings, and birthday parties. Traveling family members can gather in remembrance of a loved
one in a setting where memories, support and comfort can be shared. Whether in times of sadness and sunny in times of joy, the “Home away from Home” atmosphere is soothing. Let’s not forget the businessman or woman tired of a confining hotel room. Traveling business guests comment they have experienced greater productivity as a benefit of lodging at Baldwin House. to unwind and rejuvenate for the next business day. Small business owners can reserve the house for offsite workshops, client presentations, training seminars for small groups or business meetings. If you are planning an occasion or are looking for something different for your family or friends, think Baldwin House. Pettit’s motto “Comfortable lodging for visiting family and friends is our specialty” is evident at Baldwin House!
Ottawa Christian Academy offers rounded Biblical education In the four years Ottawa Christian Academy has been serving students in grades K through 12, administrator Debra Wenger has seen some growth. “I actually really started working on this in 2007,” Wenger said. ”I started gathering information from other private schools. This is our fourth year. We started out with five students, then 17 students then 28 students. Two families left to homeschool their six children, so now enrollment is at 21 students.” Wenger has a Bachelor degree in Religious Science, with a minor in Christian Education and a Master degree in Education from Northwest Christian University. “I want to see more growth at OCA. Surrounding cities and towns are supportive of christian education. These schools are in the Quad Cities, Pontiac, Yorkville, Princeton,” she said. “I think one of the biggest detriments is the population base we draw from is very small.” Wenger and her staff teach from a Biblical worldview using the ABEKA curriculum, teaching textbooks, and interactive computerized learning. “One of our approaches is through differentiated learning - meeting students where they’re at,” she said. “One of the benefits of small classes is that we’re able to give them, for example, a supplemental algebra class for those struggling in math. Same with language. We’re able to assess where they’re at and meet them where they’re at. I really like that. I really enjoy doing that.” Wenger said the

environment is structured, with different grades in one unit, which provides for a low
student-to-teacher ratio and interactive peer collaboration. “We really are able to
provide for them so they can grow academically, physically, emotionally and spiritually,” Wenger said. “We’re able to shape the child. People who pay money to send their children to a Christian school are, normally, more invested in their lives; when parents and educators work together, the children are more successful, more wellrounded members of
society. Our core values are compassion and respect for God and our country.” Wenger noted students come from several different denominations. “We’re not a onesize-fits-all school. The school itself is not led by one denominational doctrine,” she said. “Our students are Baptists, some are Nazarene, some are Assemblies of God,
etc. We want to reach the community for the good. We want to benefit and help our young people.” The school is open to anyone, and those with questions may contact Ms. Wenger, who emphasizes continuing education in her teachers. “We just believe in order to be an educator, you have to keep yourself educated,” she said “I think that’s important.”

Pink Chihuahua in Ottawa offers small bites, big menu The Pink Chihuahua willingly sets itself apart from other Starved Rock Country restaurants. “It’s not your typical fare for this area,” said Rae Jones, of La Salle, the eatery’s owner. After opening March 15, 2017, at its Ottawa location, the Pink Chihuahua bills itself as a location for “small bites and tapas.” Tapas is a Spanish cuisine made up of different appetizers. Such food items are served at the restaurant, which previously was open four years in La Salle. “I want you to try something you haven’t had,” said Jones, who noted her menu has 178 international items, including 75 seafood options; 250 kinds of burger combinations featuring a variety of meats; 48 craft beers and 12 house wines. Tapas eateries encourage sharing of appetizers, which can allow a diner different flavors in one sitting. Some customers stick to the small bites while others order larger meals, Jones said. “They come here expecting something
unusual. They expect a journey,” she added. Jones long had wanted to open a restaurant in Ottawa before establishing the Pink Chihuahua in her hometown. She couldn’t find a suitable Ottawa location until the owner of the Bee Hive coffee shop decided to retire, opening up space for the Pink Chihuahua. The restaurant’s interior has undergone a big change, which Jones said will continue. “It’s much larger than our La Salle location. It’s a labor of love. We’ve been evolving the past year,” she said. Warmer weather can find the cafe’s customers eating outside on sidewalks bordering La Salle and Madison streets. The Pink Chihuahua has served up exotic fare such as wild boar, kangaroo and Burmese python. Yet there’s still room on the menu for $5 burger specials and a $12 all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch. Taco Thursdays (expanded to Fridays through Lent) offer 14 different meats, including seafood, Korean pork and Jamaican jerk chicken.

Diners have come from all 50 states and 28 countries. Local diners remain important to the Pink Chi-
huahua. “I’m pretty happy with the local market. They’re keeping us busy,” Jones said. “The local market always will be our challenge. But if you’ve traveled, you get us.” The Pink Chihuahua

Saar: Teen says she receives as much as she gives with peer outreach program From page 9 The other day they spend in their own homeroom, to catch up on announcements and other business. “I really think it helps them come out of their shells a little bit, some of them don’t know anyone and it’s helpful too if they have questions on homework,” Saar said. “They have upperclassmen that have been through those classes before that can help.” Saar said it is typical at the beginning of the year for freshman students to know a few others in their homeroom, which can drive clique behavior. “As the weeks go on, they may realize ‘Oh, this person is in my homeroom and also in my science class’ so it gets less cliquey and becomes more of a jumbled mess,” she said. “It gets a lot louder as the year goes on too.” Glenn Weatherford, the homeroom teacher for the class Saar mentors, is impressed with her connection with the students. “Megan has a presence about her when she walks into the room,” Weatherford said. “She has a plan, and knows what to do with the students. Megan continues to find new ways to interact with the students and develop relationships, which help her leadership skills grow.” It turns out in Saar’s case, she is receiving just as much as she is giving to the other students. “I love it,” she said. “I feel like it’s made me a lot more outgoing. It’s made it easier to talk to kids. Both homerooms are with teachers I didn’t have freshman year so I know them better too. It’s made me more outgoing. I feel like it’s made me a better listener too.” Weatherford agrees with Saar’s assessment. “Megan makes a significant impact on all the students she mentors on a daily basis,” he said. “Megan is a solid role model and she leads by example. This example she sets will show freshman the right way to become a solid person and student at Ottawa High School. As for Saar’s future, that was decided when she

I really, really like history, maybe reading. Maybe someday I’ll be a guidance counselor, we’ll see.” In addition to being a mentor to other students, Saar is an all-around student in her own right. She has taken honors, independent study and advanced placement classes. She has been a member of the school’s Rotary club, National Honor Society, Youth Making a Change, choir and the stage crew for the last three plays. “She truly embodies the independent study program at our school, meaning she is doing it all herself,” said her independent study teacher Tom Hart “She embodies the connection with students. She embodies the willingness to sit there and listen to them whether it’s tutoring or social. She’s engaged with them. Her compassion that she’s demonstrating now as a peer in her relationships is going to fuel her passion for teaching.”

of time. A pressure washer is an investment that helps you maintain the value of your other investments, as Nodland learned. Before selling Alkota pressure washers Nodland became personally sold on them. He bought a used unit and used it for cleaning equipment at his farm north of Ottawa for 14 years. Before selling the unit he installed a new pump and it has been operating for its new owner more than seven years. Clean All Sales and Service provides sales, service and repairs on most American made units and also sells soaps and degreasers needed for complete cleaning success.

From the time she was 5 years old, Rylee has been practicing gymnastics. She went on to compete for five years, beginning at age 8, traveling around Illinois, St. Louis and Wisconsin. “I did all four elements: vault, bars, beam, floor,” she said. “I think gymnastics definitely gave me the determination I have today. You learn after you fell you had to get up again or you have to try again if something doesn’t go the way you want it to.” The Ottawa High School senior said her favorite element was the floor routine. “It’s more dancing and you can kind of show off your personality more, plus there’s music with it too,” she said.

The First National Bank of Ottawa has become a staple of the community throughout its over 150 years in operation, but they’re not dismissive of change. In fact, they embrace it. Which is why the bank is debuting its latest checking account product that not only ensures digital safety in an increasingly growing online world but also improves accessibility and enhances the services customers are already using. The bank is proud of its history, with 150th-anniversary logos adorning the building’s walls as well as the staff ’s work uniforms, and acknowledges that a large part of that longevity is due in part to meeting their customer’s needs however they can. President and CEO Steven Gonzalo said their new First Checking Premium Account was the result of a year-long discussion as to how to best offer a unique checking account that best reflects the concerns and desires of their customers. Gonzalo said cybersecurity is quickly becoming more important as the number of online transactions continues to grow. The average customer may see headlines every few months that detail businesses that lose users’ private information, but identity theft is something the staff at the First National Bank of Ottawa see every day. “People recognize transactions that are not their own,” Gonzalo said. “We wanted to do what we can to ensure there is no loss.” Gonzalo said the new ULTIMATE ID™ protection improves security for customers’ checking accounts with a monitoring system that

improves security of both their credit and personal identity information. Customers also receive monthly updates of their transactions giving up-to-date information regarding their account. Executive Officer Joel Hambleton said creating peace of mind for their customers was one of their top priorities when designing the new account. In the same way that a customer can feel at ease meeting with one of the friendly faces behind the counter inside their bank, they hope to create that same relaxed environment when using their account online. Additionally, customers can take the First National Bank of Ottawa with them wherever they go. They allow customers to use non-First National Bank ATMs for no fee to give peace of mind for those traveling outside of their community, thus giving peace of mind to the frequent traveler or the parent who is worried about their college student having access to funds while away from home. In fact, frequent travelers, as well as those that shop online, can find additional benefits from using the new account in the form of cash back and discounts. For more

information on those benefits and more, such as cell phone coverage protection, feel free to call and ask about the First Checking Premium Account. The account was designed to stand out from the checking accounts that have become indistinguishable from one another. It’s their way of providing their customers a unique account that not only keeps their information safe and providing peace of mind, but also rewards them for their support by saving their customers money. First National Bank of Ottawa is incredibly thankful for the support they’ve received over the years and as such they routinely look for ways to give back to the community however they can. Gonzalo said it’s expected the staff contributes back to the community as he sees a commitment to the community that supports them as being paramount to their business which continues to grow. What started in Ottawa and Streator has now branched out to Morris, Yorkville and most recently Maple Park which opened three weeks ago. They welcome customers, as a well as new visitors, to stop by their office and meet with one of their friendly staff for more information on this and other services they provide. The staff at First National Bank of Ottawa are excited to share this new account with its customers and look forward to feedback and continuing to grow and evolve with its customers in the years to come. Madden: Teen formerly trained, now coaches at IV Gymnastics Academy From page 15 In competition, Rylee made it to Level 7, which is higher than the compulsory levels where everyone knows the same routines. “With Level 7 it is optional where you create your own routines and obviously got more difficult,” she said. “And then every year I competed I made it to state. I think it taught me about time management at the end of it when I was in Level 7 I was in gym about 21 hours a week. I was also in Shepherd poms and had school work so with all of that it was hard to balance, but I made it work.” Today, Rylee is in her third year as a coach at Illinois Valley Gymnastics Academy in Ottawa, where she herself trained part of the time. “I think after I left I missed the sport,” she said. “I wanted to give kids what I had knowing what gymnastics did for me.” She used to teach competitive classes, but now teaches recreational classes and one introduction to competitive class. Her students are 6 to 12 years old. “I make them work hard, because I know you need to work hard if you want to progress, but I think we have a lot of fun with it too,” she said. “My favorite part is when I watch their face and they get excited about something they’ve been working on for a long time or for two years. They just get really excited about it.” Rylee says she expects more from the older students. “I definitely encourage them to be their best selves whether it’s outside the gym or trying that new skill,” she said. Rylee’s other loves on
‘I make them work hard, because I know you need to work hard if you want to progress, but I think we have a lot of fun with it, too. My favorite part is when I watch their face and they get excited about something they’ve been working on for a long time or for two years.’ rylee madden, Ottawa High School senior the floor are the Pomettes and dancing. She’s unsure if she is going to continue to coach gymnastics in college, but she says she would like to continue dancing in college. She’s been taking ballet and jazz classes for six years. “I’ve been dancing on and off during gymnastics consecutively since seventh grade,” she said. “You have to take ballet. I like jazz a lot better. I have an appreciation for ballet. It makes me work harder. There are different styles of jazz, so you can have a really hard-hitting one or a smoother one. Without ballet and the technique you wouldn’t be able to do all that.” As for poms, which she performs at school games, Rylee credits that with giving her more self confidence. “I think it’s made me come out of my shell more,” she said. “In general i don’t think of myself as this outgoing person but when we perform, I definitely get more confident.” As for the future, Rylee plans to attend Purdue University in Indiana and enter its first year engineering programs with plans to major in biomedical engineering. “I’ve always really been interested in math and
science, and I think this particular major combines what I like from both of those things,” she said. “I think it’s interesting to figure out how stuff works especially in math to figure things out and to find the thing you’re looking for and science applies to your life everyday to all around us.” In addition to gymnastics, dance and poms, Rylee has been a peer mentor for three years; the chief editor of the yearbook for three years; the president of Rotary Interact and Student Council; and the president of National Honor Society. “Rylee has extremely high expectations for herself,” said Lisa Kerestes, NHS adviser. “She works hard to achieve all of her accomplishments. All of her responsibilities are performed to the best of her ability. “Her ability to balance her course load and extracurricular activities is extraordinary,” Kerestes continued. “Despite her demanding schedule, she always has time to help others and always has a smile on her face. She is highly respected by her peers for her work ethic, intelligence, and character.”

Mark opened the doors with a few cabinet door samples, a drafting table, typewriter, and part-time assistant Colleen - and hoped for the best. They designed and sold their first kitchen within the first month, then kind of wondered if they’d sell another... Someone’s in the Kitchen, Princeton 2018... Thousands (thousands) of Illinois Valley kitchen and bath projects later, and still growing. Mark and wife/partner Sue still appreciate each customer who walks in the door. Designers Nancy, Bekah, Kendra and Candace team with Mark, using amazing walkthrough CAD software to help homeowners and contractors envision and shape projects amid a huge array of kitchen and bath displays. The whole bathroom - showers, tubs, cabinets, sinks, tile... The whole kitchen - cabinets, countertops, sinks, lighting, flooring, appliances ...
Sue and Cheryle keep track of everything in the office. Kenny leads Rick, Danny and Tom keeping things moving - delivering everything, and skillfully installing some of the projects. Brayden Cunningham
Cunningham lives life filled with music ‘The stage, the music, everything. I loved it all’ Brent Bader brentb@mywebtimes.com 815-431-4045 Brayden Cunningham has been surrounded with music for just about his whole life. Some students discover they have musical talents in high school and some in grade school, but for this 17-year-old Fieldcrest High School senior it was around age 4. It’s an interest that has carried through his life with his personal favorite musical outlet being choir. “What I really like when I listen to music is the vocal extremes,” Brayden said. “I like hearing the limits of the human voice being pushed. I like that humans can produce such impressive sounds.” And he’s quite good at it too. Brayden performs in the Illinois All-State Honors Choir, which is the highest high school choir in the state. The choir is separated into eight voice parts from highest to lowest with The Times | Annette Barr Brayden performing in the bottom one. The Times
Solon-Telford staff a family serving families The Solon Funeral Home was founded in 1901 and has been a staple in Streator for 117 years. The business saw four generations of the Solon family establish and run the business until 2002 when Tim Solon sold the funeral home to Jason and Dolly Telford. Jason and Dolly were born and raised in Streator, both attending Streator High School and then moving on to Illinois State University where they each earned a Bachelor’s Degree, Jason in Communications/ Public Relations and Dolly in Business/Marketing. The couple was married in 1996 and in 1997, Jason attended Worsham College of Mortuary Science in order to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming a funeral director. After serving an apprenticeship in Bloomington, the Telfords moved back to their hometown of Streator in 1999. Jason and Dolly have two sons, Hunter who is a senior and Mason who is a freshman, both at Streator High School. This year, the SolonTelford Funeral Home wanted to dedicate the article for The Times Progress Edition to its wonderful staff. Jason commented, “Without the

hard work and dedication of our staff, we would not be able to provide the services in the manner that we do. We consider ourselves very blessed to have such loyal and talented people working with us at the funeral home. We truly are a family here and we’re so thankful for all of them.” The staff at the SolonTelford Funeral Home includes Joe Rabbitt, Pat Gibbons, Millie Murphy, Tim Redd, Bill Lee, Jerry Ftacek and Hunter Telford. Joe Rabbitt Joe Rabbitt was born and raised in Streator and has been a licensed funeral director since 1974. He has been active in the operation of funeral homes in Streator, Crystal Lake, Rochelle, Rock Island, Moline and
Lincoln. Joe has also been a licensed insurance producer since 1988. He is a graduate of Loyola University with a degree in Business Management and Marketing. He is also a 1967 graduate of the Worsham College of Mortuary Science obtaining his Funeral Directors license in 1968. in the Illinois Valley. He eventually became President and part owner of SCI Corporation and President and owner of the company he founded in 1983, DSI Corporation. Retirement now allows Pat to return to the career he loved so much. He works part time in assisting us at the funeral home, working both visitations and funerals. Between them both, Pat and his wife, Debbie have four children and seven grandchildren. Millie Murphy Millie Murphy has been employed by the funeral home since 2000. Millie has been a member of the Neighborhood Watch committee for the last 15 years. Tim Redd Tim Redd, a life-long Streator resident, has been employed by the funeral home since 2002. Tim assists the funeral home in various capacities including funeral director assistant, working both visitations and funerals. He is
married to the former Jamie Sauers. They have one son, Jordan. Tim provides great community support to the city of Streator as he is also employed by the Streator Fire Department as a fireman. Bill Lee Bill Lee has been employed by the funeral home since 2003 and is also a lifetime Streator resident. He is married to his wife, Kathy, and they have one daughter, Jenny. Bill is a former co-owner of Lee Ambulance in Streator and currently works with the Streator Police Department in Records for the City of Streator.
Often times the funeral home calls upon help from longtime friend, Jerry Ftacek to work both visitations and funerals. Hunter Telford (Jason and Dolly’s oldest son) is also employed at the funeral home where he helps with some of the maintenance work. Dolly commented, “Jason and I cannot say enough about the staff here at the funeral home. They are all truly kind and wonderful people who give their hearts to the families we serve. They all work with sincerity and dignity, which is exactly what we want our funeral home to portray.”

Ottawa Office Supply features large selection of business, janitorial supplies With two other locations in La Salle County, Ottawa Office Supply remains one of the oldest family-owned office supply businesses in the area. Ottawa Office Supply features a wide variety of office and computer supplies, office furniture, rubber stamps, computer and laser ink-jet paper, copier supplies and janitorial supplies at each of its stores. Copy, lamination and fax services are also available. The business continues to be the largest distributor in the area for Business Source and Lorell products — brands that are designed to save customers money. Many items are sold at discounted prices comparable with the office superstores and, in fact, many times lower.
With thousands of items available from the large Business Source Office Products catalog, Ottawa Office Supply can offer even more everyday office supplies at maximum savings. Owner Tim Pohl said, “We are proud to be your office supply experts, providing you not just with competitive pricing, but the individual customer service that makes your job easier and saves you time. We are a local business backed by national support. Thank you for supporting our local economy.” Pohl said his experienced delivery personnel can deliver any customer’s, big or small, supply order at no additional charge within a reasonable distance.
Tim Pohl, with a wide variety of office chairs in stock, can help with all your office needs at Ottawa Office Supply. Most days, Pohl said, if his store receives an order in the morning they can deliver that same afternoon. Deliveries are made morning and afternoon. If an item is not in stock, we have the resources to have it shipped overnight from one of our many suppliers
for possible delivery the next day. Open in Ottawa since October 1990, the store attracts customers from Marseilles, Streator and Morris. The company’s other locations are La Salle Office Supply in La Salle and Pohl’s Office Supply in Mendota.

Cunningham: Future career path is news From page 23 “We kind of just sat at the piano and sang songs and did little exercises,” Elaine said. “He was always eager.” Then she slowly introduced him to more of the many instruments that filled her music room. His current instrument of choice is the trumpet for the high school band where he sits as first chair, but he’s also dabbled with the guitar and trombone. The two have become quite a pair with Brayden accompanying his grandmother on vacations after her husband and Brayden’s grandfather passed away. Never the one to turn down the opportunity to try an instrument, he gave the bagpipes a whirl while on a trip to Scotland. “I did OK,” Brayden said with a smile. “You have to have a lot of air.” Brayden’s parents also dabbled with music in the past and understand their
son’s interest. “They’re always supportive of what I do,” Brayden said. “I have great parents.” He’s also performed on the stage and noted his personal favorite performance being the Reverend from his school’s performance of “Footloose.” The struggle to start a professional music career as well as not having a desire to teach has Brayden leaning toward a career in communications. “Something with the news. I’ve seen news clips online most and I like the idea of informing people. I think people need to be informed,” he said. Still, music will never be far from his heart as he plans to continue performing music as a hobby in his spare time. His grandmother looks forward to seeing him continue to evolve his talents. “It’s wonderful. It’s been a real blessing,” Elaine said. “He’s been a blessing for his family.” “It’s great to see him succeed,” she added. “It does your heart good.”

Bill, Angie and Mike Stevenson of Stevenson Transfer pose with different sizes of moving trucks. Stevenson is more than a full service moving and storage company. They also load rental trucks for customers, provide new boxes and packing supplies, and are also a ‘Go Mini’s’ distributor for on-site container storage.
Big or small — Stevenson does it all Stevenson Transfer Moving and Storage is celebrating its 110th year in business. Stevenson is not just one of the oldest family-owned moving companies in Illinois, it is one of the oldest in the entire nation. The company was founded in 1908 by Todd Stevenson, and later passed to his son Herb. Bill Stevenson represented the third generation to take control of the growing business, and ultimately it was taken over by Mike Stevenson, who currently serves as president and fourth-generation owner. Mike says that one of the many reasons for the company’s success is diversification and being ready for anything. ”Whether it’s around the block or around the world; whether it’s a safe or a piano, a one-bedroom apartment, a five-bedroom home

or office relocation — we can handle it,” said Stevenson. “You name it, we can do it — we offer a wide variety of services. Many of our customers do not realize that we are more than a full service moving and storage company. We can also load rental trucks for our customers, provide new boxes and
packing supplies, and we are also a ‘Go Mini’s’ distributor for on-site container storage.” It doesn’t matter what it is or where it is going, Stevenson Transfer can handle it. Stevenson not only operates in the household arena, but also has an extensive commercial operation. “On the commercial end, we have done a lot of rigging and hoisting, utilizing cranes, power lifters and even once employed a helicopter and pilot to deliver a piece of electronic equipment we were installing on a Chicago rooftop,” Stevenson said. Stevenson Transfer operates a 75,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution center in Ottawa. Some of the items that they store are materials and products for local industries, boats, RV’s, automobiles and, of course, household goods.

The Hometown Heating & Cooling Company is a one-man business that has been proudly serving the greater Ottawa area for 15 years! However, owner Erik Rorem has personally been involved in this industry for 30 years in the greater Ottawa area. Rorem is very pleased with the stability of his business and works by the motto: “I will service your home like it was my very own.” Rorem emphasizes the fact that his company primarily serves residential customers, which Hometown can help with in both sales and service. The Hometown Heating & Cooling Company is an authorized dealer for USA-made Goodman and Amana products, continuing an ongoing business partnership. The sale of either heating or cooling equipment, of course, is also installed by Rorem. Rorem’s work is worth the cost

“Please note that the temperature must be 80 degrees or above before the air conditioner can be serviced properly,” said Rorem. Rorem, it should be noted, is also a union “sheet metal worker” who specializes in sheet metal design and fabrication. He finds this to be a great asset in his work in the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning business that he provides throughout the Ottawa marketplace. Look for Hometown’s insert around the first week of June for the company’s air conditioning cleaning and service special. Fall heating specials begin around the first week of October. Rorem is eager to meet your needs while keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Remember Hometown’s motto: “I will service your home like my very own.”
