Nothing slows down Isaiah Swon ‘He’s got the right attitude’ Charles Stanley charless@mywebtimes.com 815-431-4063 Seneca High School student Isaiah Swon is in a wheelchair, but it doesn’t seem to slow him down. A car accident on U.S. 6 in January of 2008 left Isaiah, then a first-grader, a paraplegic with no feeling in his legs. “He’s had trials, and he’s had down time,” said his father, Rob. But Rob said he admires his son for the resilience he has developed. “He’s tough inside and he’s not afraid to work,” Rob said. “He’s got the right attitude.” As an example, Rob cites his son’s performance in wheelchair sports. Last year, Isaiah qualified for the 100 yard and shot put state competition in Champaign. In the 100 yard race, Isaiah found himself competing against experienced students with specialty wheelchairs.

fashion is important. A lot of places don’t have plus sizes.” Rubenesque also can be a good option for women who are bigger chested, but not plus size, she said. Its online store is now up and running at squareup.com/ store/rubenesque-plus-size-fashion. In December, Mary Kaye opened another store at 211 W. Madison St., called Gents Men’s Wear, which she co-owns with her fiance, Robert Radtke. “It’s more trendy casual, not suits,” she said. The store includes a number of name brands, including Quay Australia, Buffalo David Bitton, Columbia and Alternative. Mary Kaye’s stores are open on Sundays, which she said benefits downtown Ottawa. “People, especially out-of-towners, complain that when they come on Sunday to shop, nothing is open,” she said. “It’s good when stores can cooperate.” She said the styles at Rubenesque are all trendy and available for teens and adults. Sizes are from XL to 4X. For denim, sizes are 14 to 24. The store is adding an online component, with a flat $5 shipping fee.

Streator Children’s Clinic offers specialized care Going to the pediatrician’s office can sometimes be daunting. It involves thoughts of getting shots, awkward talks about puberty, and saying “ahhhhh” when you think you might have strep throat. Yet, Dr. San Gabriel strives to make children’s trips to her office a positive rather than a scary one. Coming originally from the Philippines and after completing a pediatric residency in Chicago, Dr. San Gabriel came in 2001 as a pediatrician and the proprietor of the Streator Children’s Clinic. She immediately felt blessed to have been welcomed by the community. When it comes to treating her patients, she sees them as members of her extended family. In turn, she hopes to recreate that same family atmosphere in her office. As they enter the clinic, parents and patients are greeted with warm and familiar faces. Kid-friendly artwork hangs on the walls of the waiting room with a variety of toys in the exam room. Faces of children once frozen with fear depart the office with a smile, a clean bill of health, and a special treat. “If there’s one thing the kids don’t forget is there’s something waiting for them at the end of the visit,” Dr. San Gabriel said. “As soon as they’re done, they jump out of the room and head to the basket of suckers! At least we end their visit on a happy note!” The same staff worked at the clinic before she took over Dr. Mooss’ pediatric practice. Though a few have retired, Dr. San Gabriel filled those positions with Streator locals who are closely tied to the community. Keady Gillman, one of the original staff, is the office manager; Jessica Garcia also joins Keady at the front desk; Rosa

Chavez, RN; and Wendy Despinis, CNA assists Dr. San Gabriel as the seasoned clinical staff. Everyone, however, is cross-trained so anyone can pitch in to help. Communication and efficiency plays a vital part in the clinic. Dr. San Gabriel and her staff understand that their patient’s time is important. The office utilizes current technology to improve accessibility and contact with parents. As Dr. San Gabriel suggests, “Parents are an important part of the
process. Their children’s physical and emotional health begins at home and continues as part of a collaborative effort in our office. We work as a team!” Parents are encouraged to ask Dr. San Gabriel questions and she does her best to answer, “especially to clear their worries about what they read on the internet!” As members of the same team, doctor, staff, parents and family grow into a tight-knit family. At times, Dr. San Gabriel says it’s bittersweet to see a lifelong patient move on after high school.
Although she now sees patients until they’re 21 years old, she takes pride in knowing she was a part of her patients’ families as she watches them grow from newborn babies to mature young men and women as they are ready to make their mark on the world. “I do get a kick witnessing that! That feeling never gets old,” Dr. San Gabriel said. Also one of the most enjoyable experiences in her work is to see her patients becoming parents themselves, returning to her office with their children of their own. If you haven’t met Dr. San Gabriel and her staff yet, you’re likely to spot them around town as they plan to make themselves more visible at local events, festivals and community gatherings. Whether children are ill, need a physical or simply want to say hello, Dr. San Gabriel and her staff are ready to welcome you into their family.

New Ottawa Chamber website available to all You can benefit from the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce and Industry without having to be a member. Just after the first of the year, the chamber launched its new website at ottawachamberillinois.com. The site features 10 “quicklinks” for rapid access to information: Directory, Deals, Jobs, Calendar, Blog, Where to Live, Where to Shop, Where to Sleep, Where to Play and Where to Eat. For example, click on “Where to Eat” and 37 different dining spots with their phone numbers, addresses and mapped locations are at your disposal. Although the business directory is the same, the new site makes it easier to navigate. The chamber’s redesigned website already is proving its worth to newcomers. As a result of its convenience design, visitors and future residents are doing their research there before they even step foot in Ottawa. “Besides giving the chamber website a fresh look, it also gives chamber members a whole new toolbox of options to promote their businesses,” said Meg Skelly, the chamber’s assistant executive director. “The new website’s search engine optimized giving our members a new level of search-ability,” Executive Director Boyd Palmer noted. “Also new, the Video Tour of Ottawa has been given a refresh,” Skelly said. In recent years, the chamber has been involved and in synch with the city’s beautification, murals, plants and trees, historical street lights, new restaurants and retail stores, planned re-watering of the I&M canal, planned development of the riverfront, events both old and new and the concept of a “Town Square” on Jackson Street south of Washington Square park. “Ottawa is continually working toward what today’s consumer enjoys doing, and that usually means experiences that emphasize human interaction and a pleasant environment,” said Palmer. “The bottom line is we’re helping to create those experiences,” he said. “The chamber’s efforts today help shape the future of Ottawa. As we adapt and grow with Ottawa, the chamber has managed change for 102 years and we plan to continue to manage it for many years to come.”

He did exactly what he was supposed to do. “And even though he placed dead last, he was happy, because he had beat his own qualifying time.” Actually, said guidance counselor Christopher Jackson, Isaiah’s positive attitude can be inspirational to other students. “When he has a challenge or a goal, he’s shown he’s going to do it no matter what and feel good about no matter how it turns out,” Jackson said. “Nothing slows him down and that can be inspirational for other kids.” Isaiah also has a reputation beyond the high school. To earn the table required 1,000 pounds of caps. When word of the project spread, participation from donors in the Seneca community and beyond helped Isaiah surpass that goal. Isaiah is a fan of NASCAR and the Green Bay Packers. At home, he likes to cook. Fried chicken is his specialty. Currently, Isaiah is thinking of attending the culinary arts program at Joliet Junior College, and then perhaps going on to a university afterward. “He tries making lots of different food,” Rob said. “And I’ve got to admit, it’s pretty good.”

The latest sectional groups are on display at Wright’s Furniture in Pontiac. Wright’s Furniture in downtown Pontiac has been a Central Illinois tradition for 65 years. While maintaining our commitment to providing only the finest in furniture and high-quality customer service, we continue to expand our inventory and make the latest lines available to our valued clients. Wright’s Furniture was founded by Lloyd Wright on April 1, 1953. Lloyd graduated from North Central College in 1934 and spent 19 years working for the Gambles chain of stores in six different Illinois cities, selling a variety of products including hardware, toys, appliances, tires, farm equipment, furniture, floor coverings, motor scooters and much more. His great American dream began in a 4,000-square-foot store that had been Wood’s Furniture in downtown Pontiac. After four years, Lloyd moved the business to a larger, former Montgomery Ward location, a few blocks away. Over the years, Wright’s grew in size by purchasing adjoining buildings and knocking holes through the walls. Today showrooms and warehouses total approximately 60,000 square feet of floor space. Lloyd retired in 1985, but Wright’s is still family-owned and operated by Lloyd’s son, Gary, and Gary’s sons, Shawn and Eric. We are proud of our excellent staff of 25 dedicated sales, service, installation, delivery, clerical, advertising, and management personnel. We display home furnishings from an unusually large number of manufacturers including most of the “famous brands” and offer great furniture from around the world plus many great “Made in America” resources. Famous brands include La Z Boy, Flexsteel, Southern Motion, Sealy, Tempurpedic, Spring Air, Bassett, Broyhill, Catnapper, Ashley, Vaughan

One-on-one, wholesome education at Sheridan Adventist School Set in the country, Sheridan Adventist Elementary School, which teaches grades one through eight, provides a special opportunity for students to get one-on-one attention to help them learn. The NCPSA-accredited elementary school, located a little south of Sheridan, is affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and is open to the public. The school is affordable and financial aid is available. The Adventist school system is the largest unified kindergarten-to-university level Protestant school system in the United States. The school is designed to offer students academic, social and physical growth within a spiritual context. The Bible is taught as the basis of life and students are encouraged to build their relationship with God and others. The teacher, Laura Damon, who is in her 29th year of teaching, is able to build a relationship with each student and work with their individual learning styles to help them achieve their potential. The Iowa Assessment Test Scores, which are aligned with the Common Core, show that Sheridan Adventist School scored among the highest in its group. The low student-to-teacher-ratio, as well as an excellent staff and mission, are credited for the success. The small population in the classroom creates almost a family atmosphere, Damon said. There’s no bullying and each student is supportive of one another, especially the older students who pitch in and help the younger ones with their lessons. The school provides a safe, nurturing environment for each individual student.

Sheridan Adventist School stresses community service. When the Sheridan community flooded, students helped the American Red Cross pass out bottled water and lunches. Other community service activities have included helping make Thanksgiving food baskets and highway cleanup projects. Beginning in the 20152016 school year, Sheridan Adventist Elementary School began participating in the Partnering for Eternity (PFE) program, offered through Southern Adventist University. This grant program for Adventist elementary schools is designed to encourage student involvement in service and in forming relationships with senior adults, while helping finance their Christian education. Students, accompanied by their parents for those in grades 1-6, visit weekly with senior adults and engage in companion activities and some light chores. This program has been well accepted by participating seniors, students and parents. Sheridan Adventist School is able to provide students with

Co-owners Lori Wakeman, left, and Brandi Sterling place 10 of their popular meals from “Boom! Dinner’s Ready” into a tote bag. The startup company found success when they moved out of Sterling’s house and into the Streator Incubator, 401 W. Bridge St.

Not pictured, Rick Koshko. Ottawa’s first radio station, AM1430 WCMY, has been on the air for over 60 years and companion FM 95.3 WRKX first took to the air in 1964, but that hasn’t stopped them from continuing to evolve. The station continues to offer new programming including on 95.3 JackFM where nearly a year ago they introduced Jonathan “Shap” Shapiro as the live morning host from 5:30 to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday. Most of the week, 95.3 JackFM is a music-intensive Variety Hits format, but Shap takes calls and offers trivia to listeners looking to get their day started with a little extra pep. “He has fun with people to get their day started as they’re heading into work,” said Kathy Missel, General Manager of the Ottawa stations owned by NRG Media. 95.3 JackFM has already received plenty of positive feedback on Shap who is known by listeners for his many years on the air with several Starved Rock Country stations. For those hoping to get more of an indepth look at local issues and events, they can tune to “The Voice of Starved Rock Country” 1430 WCMY. Maggie Frost hosts “The Afternoon Drive from 4 to 6 p.m. weekdays, which Missel said takes a look at local issues and events. Long known for its programming directed to La Salle County’s largest industry, Agriculture, WCMY has continued to offer a full noon hour of news and information programming headlined by News Director Rick Koshko and Reporter/Anchor Ethan Krueger. “It’s just a jam-packed hour of updated information,” Missel said. Sean Frey, Sports Director and Assistant Program Director, keeps listeners updated on local sports. Missel said the station is proud of its high school sports coverage which, for the first time in several years, included every Ottawa High School and Marquette Academy football game using both the 1430 and 95.3 signals. The day gets started on 1430 WCMY early with “The Morning Meeting” hosted by Jay LeSeure from 5:30 to 10 a.m., and then Karen Rhodes takes over with her popular show “The Second Cup” after 10 a.m. Rhodes is perhaps most well known in the

community as one of the hosts of “Freezin’ for a Reezin’” every December to benefit the Ottawa Community Food Basket. The event will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2018. Giving back to the community that supports them is an important component of their business which is why they’re so thrilled it’s taken off in the community. “It’s grown tremendously over the years under Karen Rhodes’ leadership,” Missel said. The station has also upped the ante when it comes to production for the event as they’ve expanded their presence to host all of their programming on site during the event. It’s a great opportunity for the community to come out and meet the hosts they listen to on the airwaves every day. And Missel hopes they do as well because she knows they’ll appreciate them as much as she does. “I’m very impressed with the team here,” Missel said. “I’ve not worked with a team so cohesive and doing the job as best they can. It’s why I look forward to coming to work every day.” And listeners can bring all of those personalities to work with them as well regardless of their radio connection or location. The station has streamed the audio of WCMY for many years but recently added the stream of 95.3 JackFM to their website. Missel said the station will continue to evolve as its listeners evolve and looks forward to many more years of covering the community. Listeners can tune into AM1430 WCMY, 95.3 JackFM or by streaming the stations online at 1430wcmy.com and 953jackfm.net.
Boom! Dinner’s Ready offers quality, nutritious meals Are you a busy parent, working all day and then driving your children to after school-activities? If you are, you probably don’t have much time to worry about cooking a nutritious meal every day. Boom! Dinner’s Ready in Streator has got you covered. Owned by Lori Wakeman and Brandi Sterling, the business operates out of the Streator Incubator (formerly the Armory), 401 W. Bridge St., and offers cost-effective and home-cooked freezer meals. By offering freezer meals, the duo prepares meals, gearing them toward busy families. They make 250 to 500 meals each month. Business has been good, said Wakeman The business offers 10 pre-selected family meals, serving four to five people, for $121.20, including tax, or extra family meals for $14 each. Smaller meals, serving one to two people, sell for $80.80, including tax, or extra smaller meals for $9 each. The meals can then be brought home and frozen until they are ready to be prepared. Pickup times are between 4 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday afternoons. Monthly menus generally include meals involving chicken, beef, pork, or pasta but also offer unique options every month to spice up the menu. The menu selection also is

seasonal and may change. In the past, the business has offered soups in the winter and items to grill in the summer. They also include some instructions for preparing the meals, as well as some suggestions for side dishes that go well with the main course. The owners recommend customers bring large tote bags or coolers to transport the meals. Most of the meals are not pre-cooked and can be prepared in a slow cooker but can also be thawed and baked in the oven or, in some cases, a microwave. The pick-up location
is the final set of double doors on the west side of the building and their office is adorned in comic book onomatopoeias such as “Pow!” and “Wham,” embracing the superhero status customers have applied to them for helping with meal preparation. “’You’re my hero,’ is something we’ve heard before,” said Wakeman. “We really think it’s such a convenience and necessary. We love to show people our space and what we are all about. Everyone is welcome to stop and see us on Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m.”

The 18-year-old Leland High School senior wants to attend the University of Wisconsin in Whitewater and major in pre-law. “That’s the goal, anyway,” he said with a smile. When asked why he’s interested in law, he said it was all because of his social studies teacher Jim Spring. “Mr. Spring tells interesting stories, and one of the first stories I remember was about the Whitewater scandal,” Ryan said. “His story got me thinking about our court system and how everything works. So, I guess I would say he inspired me to be part of the legal system.” Ryan’s parents also have served as a guiding force in his life. “My parents (Ken and Julie) have always pushed me to do the best I could,” Ryan replied. “I accept that quality into who I am. Family has operated Anthony Liftgates since WWII Countless truck drivers are thankful to over 80 employees of Anthony Liftgates Inc. for saving their backs and shaving precious time off cargo loading and unloading duties. For over 75 years, the manufacturer has made lifting an easy, efficient chore through its registered trademark Liftgates that pick up heavy loads from the ground and hoist them to truck bed level for loading and unloading. Anthony Liftgates customers are truck body manufacturers and truck equipment dealers/ distributors. Its end users are some of the large, national companies like Black Horse Carriers, Target, IdeaLease and NationaLease. The company makes four distinct types of Liftgates ---- Pickup, RailTrac, TuckUnder and Conventional Series. The TuckUnder Series is the most common, that folds up to form a tailgate. A variety of models exist for each type. For example, there’s a RailTrac model with two hydraulic pumps and motors for heavy capacity loads of 3,500 pounds up to 6,500 pounds. The extra pump and motor serve as backup if the other fails. The Walker family venture started when the current generation’s grandfather, Lawrence Walker cut his teeth at the Anthony Co. in the 1930s as vice president and general manager of the Streator-based company. It was at Anthony that Frank Novotney, a Streator native, brought Lawrence

his invention of Liftgates. In 1941, the Anthony Company began designing, manufacturing, marketing and selling the Liftgate product. By 1945, Lawrence Walker founded his own company, Streator Dependable Manufacturing, turning out Liftgate parts as well as tractor seats. Lawrence’s sons Patrick, Ralph and Dale, ran that business until the late 1970s. In 1982, Streator Dependable bought the Liftgate product line from the Anthony Company. And from there, it was moved a stones throw away from historical Route 66, in Pontiac, where it remains today. Liftgates and parts are manufactured in a plant of over 110,000 square feet by a skilled group of craftsmen. The company added a storage building last summer and are in the process of constructing an addition to the factory to increase production. Together, Anthony Liftgates and Streator Dependable, along with two other manufacturing

Jeremy Walker with the two new building additions at Anthony Lift Gates. businesses in the Streator area, are run by Patrick’s five sons Chris, Paul, Jeremy, Tom and Jim and now, in 2017, the fourth generation is involved in running the businesses as well. Anthony used to have a corner on the market. But now, over 75 years later, many competitors have sprung up and cut into the liftgate industry, with Anthony being the only liftgate manufacturer in Illinois. The product line has been completely revamped since manufacturing began in Pontiac and continue today to refine their product offering. By
investing in state-of-theart equipment and new technologies that include different materials and finishes than in previous years, they are able to drastically extend the life of liftgates. Materials such as aluminum and stainless steel, as well as hot-dip galvanized coatings are used very commonly nowadays in the fabrication of liftgates. Anthony customers say they’re considered the “Cadillac” of Liftgates, with customer service second to none. The brothers note they were the first in the industry to offer servicefree Liftgates featuring
Teflon bushings instead of grease zerks that eliminate routine greasing and minimize maintenance while maximizing resistance to wear and tear. Other firsts in the industry listed by the Walkers included heat shrink terminals on wires to seal connections, remote control vs. levers for raising and lowering gates and Zero Leak Concept, O-ring type fittings instead of pipe threads. The company often hears that changes are customer driven but at the same time Anthony Liftgates has caused the competition to change. Anthony Liftgates are
fully assembled before they leave the Pontiac plant, which is another Anthony first to the industry. This allows more testing of components, and ensures higher quality and reliability, and makes for easier and faster installation onto trucks and trailers. The company’s Easy Mount concept means even the power unit reservoirs are filled with hydraulic fluid before shipment. Since this revival of Anthony Liftgates, sales have increased nearly every year for the last 35, and expectations are high for them to continue well into the future.

Grace Community Church celebrates one year of recovery program A local rehabilitation program is preparing to celebrate its one-year anniversary. Pastor Chuck Giacinto said Grace Community Church’s Celebrate Recovery program has been a huge success for the congregation. Giacinto explained its a Christ-centered, faith-based organization recovery program that is available across the globe and supports those dealing with addiction, abuse and more. “There’s a tremendous need in the area and thankfully there are many other programs that have been available to people along the way,” Giacinto said. “We just want to add to that and be a part of it.” The church will hold a concert to support the program at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Grace Community Church, 1634 Route 23 on the edge of Streator. Singer and songwriter Randy Stonehill will perform a variety of Christian music and Giacinto hopes the public will attend to learn more about the program. They will also celebrate their anniver-

sary during the regularly scheduled meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, April 30. Ministry leader Randy Adams said the program serves those with a variety of needs and helps them navigate the long and occasionally difficult road to recovery. “It’s for anyone with a hurt, hang-up, habit or addiction,” Adams said. “It can be of any sort. It can be for spousal abuse, child abuse, drugs, alcohol and eating disorders. It deals with a wide range of hurts, habits and hang-ups.” Adams said the program has been a hit thus far. The program incorporates a combination of 12 steps, eight principles and their
Biblical comparisons wellrounded approach to life’s hurts and struggles. The initial program takes around nine months to a year, but can last indefinitely and he hopes those that participate can stick around and help others. Adams estimates it’s just as helpful for the leadership and greater congregation as it is for those looking for help. “Going through this process we’ve benefited from it about as much as any of the people coming,” Adams said. “When it was announced, I wanted to be a part of it,” he added. “My heart kind of leapt because

Thymeless, a family owned business and one of downtown Ottawa’s newest additions, helps you do just that. We just don’t know what that story is in many cases. These items are given a new breath of life and live on in someone’s home from generation to generation,” Sharon said. “It could be as simple as a piece of barn wood that finds a new use in someone’s home.” In November, co-owners

Starved Rock Motor Inn in Streator offers travelers a unique hotel with a modern yet retro style.
Starved Rock Motor Inn offers modern comfort with retro style Travelers looking for a unique hotel in the area with modern comfort yet a retro style can look no further. The Starved Rock Motor Inn opened last year and already word is spreading like wildfire. “The hotel has picked up really well,” said owner Kevin Shah. “We get really good feedback and clientele.” Shah, and his wife Reshma, purchased the former Town and Country Inn in July 2016 because he saw an opportunity to present a new type of venue that wasn’t available in the community. The building went through a lengthy renovation period which consisted of Shah and his team replacing the flooring while adding new beds, linens, flat-screen TVs, wifi access, microwaves and refrigerators. A brand new retro design and feel was also introduced to a number of the rooms as well as an updated security and camera system. Shah said he wanted to create a safe and friendly environment that he would feel comfortable with his own daughters visiting when they grow up. Guests can also expect hot breakfast every morning and access to a coffee bar all day long. The renovations weren’t just to serve guests to the hotel, but also residents living nearby with the addition of Roamers lounge. The comfortable social seating area is complemented by an upscale bar atmosphere and a number of video gaming machines. Shah said creating a fun, safe yet social environment was key to the space and he hopes to attract a number of residents looking for a unique and comfortable gaming experience. “The lounge is picking up interest,” Shah said. “Whenever we get new people
in they’ll say ‘We never knew this existed.’” The location also includes over 1,400 square feet of meeting and banquet space complete with all the modern technology present in larger, upscale areas such as a projection screen, microphone and stage. The space is perfect for family gatherings, reunions, rehearsal dinners, corporate functions, training seminars, fashion shows as well as bridal and baby showers. There are also plans to introduce a larger 2,400 square foot wedding venue while still keeping prices affordable and relative to the area. Both the meeting space and the lounge have already been used for mobile boutique nights, corporate meetings and live music events. For the smaller group gatherings, the hotel offers a more private meeting room which can hold up to 10 people. Shah said the facility really acts as multiple businesses in one with the gaming parlor, social lounge, hotel and future wedding venue. He looks forward to seeing the business continue to grow and introduce guests to the many new offerings on the horizon. Social Media Strategist, Rhonda Eilts, at Biz Buzz suggests following the business’ social media pages to discover all that is happening inside. “There is also a new LED display along the roadside that highlights events,” Eilts said. “You will truly be pleased with the relaxing atmosphere and excellence in customer service.” Starved Rock Motor Inn is a member of the Streator Area Chamber of Commerce.

Throughout his school years, the awards and honors he has compiled are astounding. As a freshman, Ryan had perfect attendance. His sophomore school achievements include allconference soccer, soccer offensive MVP, a La Salle County Student Excellence Award and a student of the month award. During his junior and senior years, he won the Illinois Principal Association Good Student Award. “Ryan has always stood out, because he is a very self-motivated, self-directed student,” said his Spanish teacher Amanda Dean. “And we just don’t see that kind of student very often. He’s eager and you can just tell he loves learning. He turns his work in on time and always talks to me if he has any questions. I’ve really enjoyed having him in my class and I will most definitely miss him.” As busy as Ryan is, he still uses his time to help others. The Stough Group, providing seniors quality affordable housing The Stough Group manages 23 privately owned independent senior living properties. Of the 23 properties, 12 are located in the Illinois Valley. The Group has properties in Streator (100 units), Ottawa (60 units), Peru (110 units), Oglesby (50 units), Mendota (50 units), Spring Valley (100 units) and Princeton (68 units). The properties were built exclusively for senior citizens without any stairs or steps. To qualify for one of the apartments, applicants must be at least 62 years of age. Income limits are produced annually by Housing and Urban Development and the Illinois Housing Development Authority. Our mission is to provide seniors with quality affordable housing. When making the transition from owning a home to a senior living facility, it can be very intimidating. The thought of leaving behind memories and familiar surroundings can be very terrifying and stressful for older adults. However, it has been my experience that nearly 100 percent of the time, the senior doesn’t regret their decision. By eliminating the expense of snow removal, landscaping, and/ or expensive home repairs seniors can enjoy their “golden years.” The Group maintains individual site-specific waiting lists for each development, meaning each property has their own waiting list. The Group allows people to place their names on the waiting list and remain there until they are ready to move. For example, there are people who have been

on the list for years but are not ready to move. The Group keeps them on the list providing they return the annual update. “I have been told by several different organizations in the community that many seniors are under the
impression that each waiting list is two to three years long, which discourages seniors from getting on the list. This rumor is untrue,” Alexis Ruck of The Stough Group said. “We strongly encourage seniors who are interested in pursuing
our housing to call and get their names placed on the list. It’s possible for someone to get on the list and then get an apartment shortly thereafter. For instance, we have had a higher than normal turnover throughout our Streator sites this year. We are currently looking for qualified applicants that are ready to move.” Many senior housing complexes are high-rises, while The Stough Group’s developments in the Illinois Valley are ground level without any stairs or steps. Each tenant has their own entrance to their
home unlike the common entrances of a high-rise. There are not any common hallways shared by the residents. Imagine the convenience of parking your vehicle steps from your front door; this certainly simplifies life for the seniors. It also provides peace of mind for children of seniors to know that their parent(s) has a safe place to call home. “Well guess what, we do! That’s right, our tenants control their own heating and cooling,” Ruck said. The Stough Group strives to ensure that seniors are enjoying their
retirement without any worries. “I suppose the most important reason to choose our housing over others is that it is affordable for seniors. We are privately owned, and rents are not subsidized, but we do keep our rents affordable,” Ruck said. “We receive several phone calls from applicants that are interesting in seeing a model unit. We rarely have a vacancy; thus we don’t have model units to show. On Friday, April 6, we will be hosting an open house at the 901 Meadow Lane in Streator from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.”

The Hagi & Baker Funeral Home has been serving the Streatorland area since 1895. Its history begins in the community of Ransom and then a second location in Streator in the 100 block of South Park Street in 1920. John J. “Jack” Hagi then purchased the residence at 205 High Street in 1936 and moved the funeral home into that facility. It is the oldest standing home in Streator having been built in 1873. It was built by Martin J. Overholt at the cost of $10,000. Mr. Overholt died in 1877. The home was then purchased by E.H. Bailey, paymaster of the Streator Coal Company. Additions were later added in 1950 to construct a larger chapel, preparation room and lounge. Jack operated the funeral home along with the assistance of his son-in-law John Kerestes, until Jack’s passing in 1974. John continued the business, along with his wife Mary Hagi-Kerestes, until his passing in 2013. Mary passed away in 2016. Bryan M. Baker, who was born and raised in Streator, became a funeral director in 1989. He graduated from Streator Township High School in 1987 and then graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 1989. He is the son of Morton “Russ” Baker of Streator and the late Nancy (Hagie) Baker. Bryan had owned and operated another funeral home in Streator until moving away for nine years. He returned home in September of 2016 to purchase the Hagi Funeral Home from Kyle Kerestes, also a funeral director and the son of John and Mary Kerestes. Bryan has two children, Colin Russell Baker, age 13 and Margaret “Maghie” Irene Baker, age 12, both who are in grade school. He also has three sisters, Diane Bauer, Cindy (J.J.) Neiggemann and Amy (Terry “Oly”) Oelschlager, all of Streator and a twin

He has also served as Illinois Funeral Directors Association District 5 president and treasurer. Bryan started the trivia night contests here in Streator in 1998 that have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for many charities. He is also a licensed insurance agent. We plan to continue to improve our facilities to meet the changing needs of families today and for the future.

Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation is a safe and proven treatment alternative for persistent Eustachian Tube Dysfunction that works at the source of the problem and preserves the ear’s natural anatomy. This revolutionary procedure is now offered by Dale Chilson, DO of the St. Margaret’s Ear, Nose & Throat Center.
Pain or pressure in your ear? If you have ever been on a plane or at a higher elevation, you have probably noticed a change in the pressure in your ears and have chewed gum or swallowed to adjust the pressure that began to build up. This type of discomfort is only temporary and happened because you were not swallowing or yawning at the time of the rapid change in atmospheric pressure. But this example shows the importance of your eustachian tubes and the discomfort they can cause if they are not functioning properly. The eustachian tubes run from the back of the nose in the upper throat to the middle ear. They function as a valve to maintain proper pressure in the middle ear. While they stay closed much of the time, they quickly open and close upon swallowing or yawning to allow the passage of air and drainage of normal secretions. However, when inflammation, swelling, or mucus disrupt this function, pressure in the middle ear will not be normalized and mucus cannot drain properly. When this happens, it is called Eustachian Tube Dysfunction or ETD. Symptoms of persistent ETD include ear pain, pressure, fullness, popping, muffled hearing, or ringing. According to Acclarent, it is estimated that a minimum of 2 million adult patients suffer from ETD in the United States. If you suffer from ETD, the Acclarent Aera™ Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation is the best longterm treatment option available for adults. This procedure is safe and minimally invasive. During this outpatient procedure, a catheter is maneuvered from the nose to the eustachian tube where a balloon is then inflated for a few minutes to minimize the inflamed tissues and maximize the opening. Within a few months of the procedure, the eustachian tubes begin to start functioning properly on their own. The success rate is high for restoring proper function and has better results than with medicine alone. About a decade of data on this procedure has resulted in a 99.7% technical

According to Acclarent, until 2016 there was no balloon catheter widely available in the United States specifically designed to dilate the Eustachian tube. The options that were available before this procedure included a Tympanostomy Tube, which requires an incision be made through the tympanic membrane to place an ear tube—to provide temporary ventilation of the Eustachian tube, and a Tuboplasty, which is the use of a surgical laser tor microdebrider to ablate or remove the mucosa from the Eustachian tube. Both procedures are more invasive than the balloon dilation procedure and come with significantly more risks, including hearing loss, scarring, chronic perforation and more—all of which results in repeated future office visits and procedures. He is Board Certified in Otolaryngology, as well as, Head and Neck and Facial Plastic Surgery. For over 20 years, Dr. Chilson has provided consistent, quality care. He is the same doctor, offering the same exceptional care as a Center of Excellence. If you experience pain and pressure in your ear as an adult and are looking for a more permanent treatment, then the Acclarent Aera™ Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation system may be right for you. IVCIL offers training to equip people with disabilities with the skills and information to manage their lives and live more independently. This is done through building rapport with them and establishing goals they feel will increase their independence. Transition Services — This involves transitional services that: a. facilitate the transition of individuals with significant disabilities from nursing homes and other institutions to home and community-based residences, with the requisite supports and services; b. provide assistance to individuals with significant disabilities who are at risk of entering institutions so that the individuals may remain in the community; and c. facilitate the transition of youth with significant disabilities, who were eligible for individualized education programs under IDEA, and who have completed their secondary education and otherwise left school to postsecondary life up to the age of 25. IVCIL also offers specific programs. The Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living now operates a Mobile Meals program for Peru, La Salle and Oglesby. Not only do IVCIL Mobile Meals clients receive one hot and one cold meal per day, prepared by IVCH and delivered by IVCIL, they also enjoy some personto-person contact every day. Also, families know someone is checking on their loved one. The Personal Assistant Program — This program is designed to provide services that address the personal needs of individuals with disabilities. People who may benefit from these services have a permanent disability and want to stay in their own home. A personal assistant will help such people with daily activities. These activities may include personal care, meal preparation, shopping. Assistants allow individuals to remain at home, instead of

IVCIL’s personal assistant program can help locate assistants to provide the compassionate care required for families who find themselves in such situations. The Community Reintegration Program — This program helps people currently living in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities to live independently in the community. People with disabilities, who live in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities, are often housed there because they are unfamiliar with the options that allow them to live independently. IVCIL’s Community Reintegration Program helps these people overcome such barriers and helps them return home. Youth Services Program — This program is another bridge to independence for persons with disabilities. Youth Services is for children with disabilities up to age 22 that are still attending high school and their families. Schools, agencies and community groups are eligible for services that focus on improving educational and community opportunities for youth with disabilities. Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living is a nonprofit, nonresidential service and advocacy organization based in La Salle that assists persons with disabilities in opening doors to their independence. It serves the communities of La Salle, Bureau, Putnam, Marshall and Stark counties. The Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living works to ensure people with disabilities live fulfilling lives. “We put the person first, having a disability is only a part of the individual,” said Executive Director Brian Szuda. As a community-based, nonresidential center for independent living, we work to increase the involvement of persons with disabilities in every aspect of life. We strive to enhance their potential to achieve and sustain selfdirected living in home or community settings, depending on their choices. Essentially, independent living means experiencing life as everyone else does. IVCIL is consumer-driven and run by people with disabilities, who have successfully established independent lives. We believe no one can represent disability rights and independent living issues with more credibility than those whose lives are directly affected by a disability. IVCIL has five core services: Information and Referral — We offer guidance in locating services and products, as well as tips on how to use such services and products. IVCIL responds to inquiries on a variety of issues from all directions. Advocacy — Advocacy is another service offered at IVCIL. There are two types of advocacy. Individual advocacy focuses on the individual and services available within the community, encouraging persons with disabilities to assert themselves when seeking services. Systemic advocacy involves working together to eliminate barriers and allow people with disabilities to fully participate in their community. Peer Counseling — The foundation of IVCIL’s services is the peer relationship. Staff who have experienced disability and are achieving their personal goals, assist others who have similar disabilities, serving as role models, mentors and advocates. The peer relationship helps individuals work through matters, specific to their particular disability. Also, it offers encouragement as the transition is made to independent living. A titer test involves testing a dog’s blood to see if its antibody levels are high enough for its immune system to overcome distemper, parvovirus and hepatitis in dogs. The same is done to cats to check for panleukopenia. If levels are high enough, the pet does not have to be vaccinated. The work of No Animal Left Behind is a community service to provide a healthier life for pets. Garden’s Gate Garden Center offers plants, classes, services By definition, the word “enliven” means to make something more interesting or appealing. The folks at Garden’s Gate Garden Center and Landscaping in Ottawa take that to heart each spring. “This year is going to be our best year yet,” said Dave Stacy, who co-owns the business with his wife, Stephanie. “We are focused on growing a great selection of quality plants and teaching our customers how to create beautiful spaces in their yards.” Garden’s Gate prides itself on growing all of its own perennials, annuals and vegetables. “Growing in our greenhouses is my absolute favorite part of our job,” said Stephanie. “I know I’ve said it before, but being in the greenhouse revives me after a long winter. “We’ve added a lot of new Proven Winner plant varieties this year, plus there are some really great things happening in the shrub world and we can’t wait to share it with our customers,” she added. Customers that visit Garden’s Gate this year will not only be welcomed by the greenhouses bursting with color and life, they will also see a newly updated home and garden shop. “We have returned to our roots bringing back our popular modern farmhouse and vintage industrial style to our store,” said Stephanie. “I’ve wanted to do this since 2016 but just haven’t had the time.” “We’ve spent months painting the shop and hand selecting every piece we have for sale,” Stephanie added. “We’ve traveled all over the states to find amazing pieces, most of them are reclaimed or handmade items.” In addition to greenhouses and home décor, Garden’s Gate will once again be offering classes this spring “Our popular fairy gardening classes are entering their third year,” said Dave. “Along with the fairy gardening we will also

Free spirits reign at Wild Hearts Boutique in Streator
Deb Sergeant and Jennifer Blanchette manage Wild Hearts Boutique in downtown Streator. The store offers unique clothing, jewelry, accessories and fragrances. Wild Hearts Boutique is a destination for the free spirited. The Streator business began in a remodeled corn crib, along Route 17 in the middle of a field near Wenona, before moving last year to Streator’s business district. The new spot provided more space for their growing business. The end of April marks the store’s first anniversary at its Streator location. Mother and daughter, Deb Sergeant and Jennifer Blanchette manage the store, which is all about vibe, with bare brick walls and hardwood floor. They describe themselves as a team with a passion for all things free spirited, bringing to customers
unique clothing, jewelry, accessories and fragrances. If the soul of a gypsy beats inside your heart and you’re looking for some boho cowgirl flair, visit Wild Hearts Boutique and discover the inspiration the store holds.

Anna’s game plan calls for her to attend IVCC two years and then transfer to another school. It could be Loyola University in Chicago. “I really like Loyola,” Anna observed. As far as her interest in the workings of the mind, Anna said it’s a combination of curiosity and compassion. “I’ve always been told I’m very observant. I also connect with people. I like knowing why people get angry. I want to understand why and make them feel accepted,” Anna noted. She is getting a little advance education at her part-time job at Cinderella Beauty Salon in Streator, where she has worked three years, doing shampoos and miscellaneous tasks. “Working at the beauty salon is good practice for nursing. Pet Project holds the distinction of being the first nonprofit no kill animal shelter run by volunteers in La Salle County. These days, the shelter operates with a full-time paid kennel staff of three, and operates with a volunteer-run board of directors.
From its humble beginnings in a barn type building, Pet Project is celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2018. The organization is now operating at 2676 E 2575 Road, Marseilles – maintaining their own shelter while actively working on what they do best, finding loving homes for the homeless dogs and cats of La Salle County. Since its inception, Pet Project has found homes for almost 7,000 pets. Pet Project also holds the distinction of being the first nonprofit no kill animal shelter run by volunteers in La Salle County. These days, the shelter operates with a full-time paid kennel staff of three, and operates with a volunteer-run board of directors. Every dollar raised goes to paying staff, caring for the animals, and maintaining the shelter. Pet Project would not have survived these many years without community support and their interest and compassion for abandoned pets. For 2018, Pet Project will be dedicating a memorial garden, in which supporters can donate for an inscribed brick in memory of a loved one. They are currently getting ready for the Cutest Pet Contest 2019, their biggest

Joey Byers
1 student, 3 sports Byers driven by competition Brent Bader brentb@mywebtimes.com 815-431-4045 It’s difficult enough to excel in one sport, let alone three. But that’s what Joey Byers has been doing at Streator High School. The Ransom resident plays soccer, baseball and basketball at the high school in an effort to compete at every level. “I think it’s just about being competitive,” Byers said of his drive. “Just trying to win and wanting to win really bad.” And winning is something he’s been doing very well. Basketball coach Beau Doty estimates Byers is the school’s most winningest player since the 60s. The coach said he takes on any role he’s given with dedication and few players compete as hard as he does. “Joey’s been unbelievable for our program,” Doty said. “He’s
a four-year varsity player. He’s a great kid and a rarity in our school right now in that he’s a three-sport athlete.” But he didn’t start out that way. Byers estimates he started playing sports in the first grade after encouragement from his parents, Craig and Amy, but he really came into his own around age 12. Basketball and soccer were easier to learn but baseball, his personal favorite, took some additional time. Participating in three sports at the same time takes a large amount of planning for the student who needs to fit in time for classes, practice, workouts, homework, hanging out with friends and squeezing some sleep in as well. “I think (his parents) were really happy when he started driving,” Doty joked.

Two Rivers Outreach expands offerings A crusade of Brian McIntyre’s is picking up steam. The Ottawa man opened Two Rivers Outreach in 2016 in order to serve those that struggled with drugs and alcohol. McIntyre estimates he has served over 230 individuals and with his latest expansion he’ll be able to serve even more. “We’ve expanded our scopes quite a bit,” McIntyre said. McIntyre himself has struggled with addiction in the past and after two liver transplants, with the second at age 65, he’s set himself on a path toward helping. McIntyre has been living in long-term recovery thanks to a 12-step recovery program called AA. He also gives credit to SBDC Director Amy Lambert for keeping him focused and bringing his thinking into the 21st century of communication as well as the Streator Armory for believing in his vision. McIntyre comes along with a talented staff dedicated to serving the needs of its clients. That dedication will also now come in the form of additional family support services and anger management classes on a weekly basis. He said the business has seen quite a bit of success and he attributes that to increased interest in other

services. “We have served several hundred clients through the time we’ve been open and what I’m seeing is, particularly in the Streator area, that people could be given even more services in this community if we stepped up our game a little bit,” McIntyre said. The outreach center will be able to offer mental health counseling, couple mediations, family mediations, divorce mediations and individual mediations. McIntyre believes in harm reduction to deal with the Opioid Crisis and Two Rivers Sponsors Narcan Training with certification in its use. “It’s cutting edge such,” he added. toward being able to accept insurance. In addition to his increased offerings in Streator, he also plans to open a full branch in Princeton.
“I’ve made a significant long-term commitment to what I’m doing,” McIntyre said. McIntyre knows he cannot offer these services without the help and
belief in a higher power. McIntyre said he continues to connect with those in need and the size of the operation allows each of its clients to have the individualized
attention they need to heal. McIntyre welcomes any interested parties to connect with the group and learn about their offerings.
New larger location enhances Matthew Bullock Auction Gallery/Main Street Estate Sales, offers showrooms Matthew Bullock Auction Gallery and its sister company, Main Street Estate Sales, has a new, bigger home. They now are located at 421 E. Stevenson Road in Ottawa — one building east of their former location for nearly eight years. Long empty, their new home had been a call center for the Reliable Corp. which sold office equipment and supplies. The new 38,000-squarefoot location is more than half again larger than the previous 24,000--squarefoot location. “This is an amazing facility,” said Sue Bullock, who owns and manages the businesses with her son Matt — Sue focusing on the Estate sales and Matt on the sale of large collections and high-end collectibles according to their clients’ needs. “That way we have a solution for everyone,” Sue said. The new location is divided into spacious showrooms for the estate sales and auctions as well as behind-the-scenes areas for preparation, shipping and storage of goods. The auction side of the Bullocks’ business includes auctions held at the facility and from three live online platforms to bidders from all over the world, said Matt. The estate sales are held every other weekend, from
Thursday through Sunday. The first three days items are sold at their marked prices. The last day is the “discount day!” The estate items that are sold come from a variety of locations, Sue said. About half are from the general area of Ottawa, Streator, La Salle, Peru and Morris. The rest come from further out, including the suburbs up to a couple hours away. Gated communities and senior living complexes also are a source for estate goods because estate sales are not allowed in those establishments, Sue noted. Estates are assessed as to whether they are best for a sale or an auction and processed accordingly. In either case the goods are unpacked, sorted and priced. Not every estate meets the standards for a Bullock sale or auction, Sue said. The Bullocks do not seek out particular types of household goods. “My motto is whatever you find in a house, you’ll find at Main Street,” she said. Getting the prized possessions of one family into new homes where they will be appreciated by new owners is one of Sue’s goals. “For me, that’s what it’s all about,” she said.

Avanti Tools & Accessories Inc. going strong in Oglesby Avanti Tools & Accessories Inc. has been at its present location at 210 N. Columbia Ave. in Oglesby, for one year, with a slogan of “We Buy, Sell, Trade, Repair New, Used, and Reconditioned Tools.” The business was in Peru several years, but owner Mike Partipilo needed more room, so he found a property a few miles away in Oglesby, which at 4,700 square feet, is more than four times larger than his former location. Partipilo wanted more space so he could start woodworking and metalworking classes, which he said there is a demand for in the Illinois Valley. “Working with tools is therapeutic,” he said . “That’s why I want to teach woodworking and metalworking. I had a customer this morning, and she was asking me about the classes. Those are coming down the road in a year or two. We want to get our feet settled and pay off some bills.” April 2 marked Avanti Tools’ 19th year in business. It has been in the Illinois Valley for six years. Before that, it was in the Fox Valley area. “I’m a little guy, not a big box store or online. The money I make stays in the community,” Partipilo pointed out. Besides sales and repairs, Partipilo offers service calls as well as pick-ups and deliveries. Nearly every part of the store is stocked with new, used and reconditioned items. Prominent among the power tool brand names are Milwaukee, DeWalt, Bosch, Jet, General International, Paslode and Skil. What you don’t see, Partipilo can order. Partipilo also repairs bench-top restaurant equipment. His business serves as a drop-off center for R.P. Lumber, primarily Ottawa and Streator. He also sells

nostalgic and auto-related signs, as well as signs with funny sayings. But repair is Partipilo’s principal preoccupation, with customers able to watch him at work, as his repair bench is open to view. “It doesn’t bother me at all when people watch
me,” he said. “Some people get edgy when people watch them work.” Customers are invited to visit and talk with him while he works. He especially likes to hear about the projects they’re working on, giving advice customers can’t find at big-box stores — he also
hears from the stores themselves for help. “I want to see people happy when they go out the door,” Partipilo said. “I believe in customer service. That’s why I’m here.” Partipilo, who lives in Utica, served five years in the Navy, where
he was trained as a pattern maker, a career he pursued after his discharge. With jobs going overseas, Partipilo was tired of getting laid off. He discussed his situation with his sisters, and they said the solution was obvious. “My sisters said that I like selling and repairing tools, so I should get into that work. In 1999, I started my business,” Partipilo said. “They were right. It was great to take my sisters’ advice. Here I am 19 years later, this was the perfect fit. I feel successful, and that’s
why I’m willing to help other people achieve their goals.” Ebner Platinum Builders, which is owned by Jason Ebner, is also based in the Avanti building. Ebner does all types of construction and remodeling. Platinum’s phone number is: 815-8305709. Partipilo and Ebner also operate Avanti Maintenance Co., which provides maintenance service, such as snow plowing, tree removal, painting, deck building, etc. The company services Grand Bear Homeowners Association in Utica.

J & M Reliable is under new management, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from the way they run their business. New owner Jason Hawley of the family-run business has continued providing the same carpet and upholstery services with the same level of detail and care that the previous owners had provided. But he also brings his 11 years of experience in the industry to introduce new services for the company’s clientele and an expansion to meet the needs of a growing customer base. Hawley said most customers know the business for its exceptional carpet cleanings and upholstery restorations and he is bringing that same level of service to restoration efforts following events such as a flood or fire. Hawley has spent a decade in the industry and has gathered a wealth of knowledge with regards to restoring homes after such an unpredictable event. In addition, the company is also available for mold remediation. Certified mold inspectors are available to inspect properties, test if necessary and determine the best methods to remove or mitigate the issue. The company is available not only for whatever need a customer may have but also whenever they may have that need. Hawley said the company is available 24 hours a day and seven days a week as they understand their services may be required on short notice. They also understand that process of recovering from such an event can be difficult and confusing

which is why Hawley also offers support when it comes to working with insurance companies. The company has a lot of background in handling claims and they’re happy to be able to take one less concern off of a homeowner’s mind as the process of repair begins. Hawley understands the company’s name has become well known in Streator and as such, it was important to them to keep the business rooted in Streator. However, the
business is also beginning to grow beyond the city limits and services communities in the surrounding areas, thanks in part to the new services they offer. As such, Hawley hopes to continue to grow the business and add to slowly increasing number of fully-trained and insured staff in Streator. Despite the growing staff and business, Hawley has stuck to the same pricing plans that have served the company well throughout the years. Hawley hopes customers continue to call J & M Reliable for the carpet and upholstery services, but as well for those larger disasters and cleanup needs. No restoration is too little or small for the company which is able to provide the fully-trained staff and full services for whatever situation customers find themselves dealing with.

Byers: Classroom work ranks high in teen’s priorities

From page 31 Craig said it has been a struggle to balance schedules, but it works for the most part. “We’re a tight-knit crew at this house and he’s got a good support system,” Craig said. And that mentality expands to his siblings as well. Byers has one older brother and a younger brother and sister. The younger siblings are just getting into sports and Joey is taking the time to teach and train them as they grow up. His desire to do the best he can extends to the classroom as well, due in part to encouragement from his parents. “It’s always a challenge,” Amy said regarding Joey’s classwork. “We have to stay on top of him, but he does.” Byers added that his courses take priority over everything else and while it may lead to some long nights, he’s always sure to get the work done. Especially for Dan Pouk’s accounting class, which is his personal favorite. His next stop is Heartland Community College, and he is thinking of taking classes in both business and psychology. Whatever his major may end up being, he knows baseball will be on the horizon as well. Balancing such a frantic schedule can be a chore, but Byers said it’s necessary to fuel his passion. “I just want to win in everything I do,” Byers said. “I want to be the best.”
‘Joey’s been unbelievable for our program. He’s a four-year varsity player. He’s a great kid and a rarity in our school right now in that he’s a three-sport athlete.’ Beau doty Streator High School boys basketball coach

Chippers Grill in Streator to celebrate 20 years this summer Even after two decades, the success Chippers Grill Owner John Brown has experienced overwhelms him from time to time. Chippers Grill in Streator is celebrating its 20th anniversary and they’re hoping to celebrate with the customers that have supported them over the years. Brown said the staff has some ideas to celebrate this summer including giveaways, prizes and some dinner specials that were popular 20 years ago. As Brown looks back, he’s most thankful for the support he’s received from the community. “I’ve been so fortunate,” Brown said. “I’m a people person and I’ve made so many friends with customers here where when they walk in the door I look forward to seeing them. I know their name and they know mine.” He’s been thankful for the support that has come from the community and said he looks forward to every opportunity where he can give back such as through supporting local events or sporting teams. Chippers Grill, which was named after Brown and his nickname on the golf course due to his chipper golf club, was not always a sure bet. In fact, Brown recalls some people estimating he’d be in business for just six months which he said only encouraged him. Brown was nervous prior to opening but was

able to pull on nearly a lifetime’s worth of experience in the industry after getting his first job in the restaurant business at age 16 with Oogie’s. Since then Brown has held or performed just about every job possible in the food industry and it’s given him valuable insight into running Chippers Grill. But he also equates much of that success to his dedicated and hardworking staff, some of which have been working with Brown since the restaurant first opened. Brown has kept high standards when it comes to his staff and he’s impressed that they are consistently met by the workers both in the kitchen and in the dining room. The consistency is also present in the menu which changes from time to time but includes the “melt in your mouth” pot roast, diverse buffet and the ever-
