Be the toast of the wedding These tips will help you give a no-fail wedding speech By Shannon Serpette
I
t’s undeniable that brides and grooms feel most of the pressure when it comes to weddings. They’re constantly planning, stressing, and worrying about the financial drain of throwing their dream wedding. But they’re not the only ones feeling the strain. The maid of honor and best man both have duties of their own, including giving an unforgettable wedding speech. With public speaking being one of the most common fears, giving a speech can be a nerve-wracking experience. Because of nerves and the overwhelming desire to nail the speech, it’s easy to make some pretty big mistakes while
preparing it or giving it. If you have a speech to give at an upcoming wedding and you don’t want to look into the audience and see blank, irritated, or confused expressions, take note of these speech-giving tips offered by Sally Taliani, assistant speech coach at Ottawa Township High School. DON’T OVERCOMPLICATE THINGS A great speech doesn’t have to use a bunch of ridiculously long words to be effective – See SPEECH page 4
The Times Publication | Dream Weddings | January 2022 3
Speech FROM PAGE 3
and it doesn’t have to last forever either. If your speech is too long, you run the risk of losing your audience or boring them. “Keep it short, sweet, and simple,” Taliani said. KNOW THE AUDIENCE Not everyone knows the bride or groom in the same way you do – and that’s important to keep in mind while writing your speech. Their elderly relatives may not appreciate hearing about some of the experiences you’ve had with the bride and groom. “Remember that the couple’s grandparents are in the audience,” Taliani said. “Don’t tell stories about nakedness and drunkenness. Save those for the bachelor and bachelorette parties.” USE HUMOR AND SENTIMENTALITY – TO A POINT It’s a great idea to give your speech a dash of humor, but it’s not wise to turn it into an
open-mic night at an amateur comedy club or a roast of the bride or groom. The same goes with sentimentality – a little can go a long way. “You were chosen for this role for a reason, and that reason is how important you are to the couple,” Taliani said. “It is not to be a stand-up comedy routine or a sob fest.” IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU Although you’ll be the one sweating profusely as you grab the microphone and have to make the speech, keep in mind the role you are playing. “This isn’t about you,” she said. “Keep it about the couple. Wish them well and sincerely mean it.” GIVE IT A TEST RUN It’s easy to want to deny that you’re going to have to give a public speech, especially if that’s one of your fears. But sticking your head in the sand and avoiding writing and practicing the speech won’t help anyone. “Prepare your speech and practice it. Write it down on note cards or paper or even your phone so you don’t forget anything,” Taliani said. “This is not the time for winging it.”

Kishauwau Cabins in rural Tonica is ideal for engagements and honeymoons Photos and story by Shannon Serpette ith the pandemic roaring on, honeymoons are hard to plan. With travel restrictions W constantly changing, many couples are still
planning honeymoons that allow them to isolate themselves to protect their health and provide that essential romantic alone time. Kishauwau Cabins in rural Tonica is an excellent pick for couples looking for a local engagement spot. “We get tons of engagements here. This is a backdrop to be in if you are going to get your engagement photos,” said Terisa King, who owns Kishauwau Cabins with her husband, Jamie. “There’s a lot of heart and passion here. This is a passion for me. It’s where I think I was meant to end up.” Terisa and Jamie have owned the cabins and property since 2018, and Jamie has been a part

of the site since his parents, Ben and Ellen, decided to create a place for outdoor lovers there. “My husband helped his father build these cabins,” Terisa said, adding that she’s been a part of the endeavor for 18 years. These days, the 65-acre property that was once a Boy Scout camp has 17 cabins on it. “They are so nicely spread out,” she said, adding that each one feels private. “That’s what people like most about our property.” For Jamie, the magic of Kishauwau Cabins lies not just in its scenic beauty with the Vermillion River running on the back of the property, but his memories of building it with his family. “It’s the history,” he said. Right from the start, Ben and Ellen created a place where people could meet up to share their love of the outdoors and companionship with like minds. “They created a sense of community,” Terisa said. That sense of community continues with Jamie and Terisa as owners. They live onsite and are happy to have conversations and interactions with guests, but they’re also respectful of guests’ wishes for alone time. One thing that has changed in recent years is the wait time for a cabin. “We became high demand because of Covid,” Terisa said. “Summer is the busiest season – our books go out one year, so it’s good to book as early as possible.”

The site offers contactless check-in, full kitchens in the cabins, outdoor grills, and whirlpool tubs in many of the cabins. There are four dog-friendly cabins for couples who can’t stand the idea of leaving their fur babies at home. Part of the office is open 24/7, even if no one is there. Guests can check out movies, games, and books for free, working on the honor system. If you need a snack, water, or essential item, you can put your cash in an envelope. Jamie and Terisa trust their guests, just as Jamie’s parents did. That’s part of the special charm that makes Kishauwau Cabins feel like a family-friendly stop that only existed 40 or 50 years ago. One thing you won’t find at the cabins, though, is WiFi. “To me, that’s not what this get-away is about,” Terisa said. “What people have to get used to is that you’re unplugged. I love the unpluggedness of our property. It’s forced reconnection,” she said. “You’re going to sit down and play a board game or tell ghost stories. This get-away is nostalgic. That’s why the older generation loves it.” To help create the mood for an engagement get-away, a honeymoon, or anniversary, Kishauwau Cabins offers add-on packages aimed at helping couples connect. They have a stargazing package, a romance package, a romantic dining package, and more. Terisa and Jamie are grateful to carry on the family legacy, helping people reconnect and enjoy nature in such a busy world. “Ben and Ellen would be very proud to see what we’ve done with the place,” Terisa said.

The brides are back Early wedding planning is crucial right now
I
Story by Shannon Serpette
In 2020 and part of 2021, brides postponed their weddings in record numbers. They watched as the worldwide Covid pandemic crushed their hopes of a dream wedding and completely obliterated all the planning they had already put into their big day. Venues closed temporarily, and long engagements became the norm. Thanks in part to the Covid vaccine, the wedding industry has come roaring back in 2021 and looks to be equally strong for 2022. While that’s great news for eager brides-to-be, it also presents its own set of challenges while planning a wedding – everything is nearly booked for the foreseeable future. Sydney Rothchild of Ottawa, who is planning a November 2022 wedding to her fiancé Jordan Hubinsky, is learning firsthand how stressful wedding planning can be right now.
But she’s also keeping in mind that it’s a oncein-a-lifetime situation, so she’s enjoying herself despite the stress. But she does have one piece of advice for anyone at any phase of wedding planning right now.

“Book everything you can as early as you can. Businesses are almost fully booked for weddings two years in advance right now,” she said. “Enjoy every moment of planning – it goes by fast.” She encourages brides-to-be to find the part of wedding planning that they enjoy and have fun with it. “I’m very crafty, so everything is a DYI project here,” she said. Because she planned ahead, Rothchild was able to lock down her dream wedding location – Ironwood on the Vermilion, a venue big enough to accommodate her 200 invited wedding guests. “It’s close to home and is that rustic barn feel we are looking for,” she said. Daniel Goodyear and Larissa (Magana) Goodyear of Streator were married on Sept. 25, 2021. Since they were married this year, they were doing their bulk of wedding planning before things were too overbooked, and they were also fortunate to dodge the cancellations that plagued brides who were attempting to get married in 2020. Sticking to a budget proved to be the hardest part about wedding planning, according to Larissa. The Goodyears were married at Streator’s St. Michael The Archangel church, formerly known as St. Stephen’s Church, a place that had a special meaning to Larissa. “I grew up going to St Michael’s and have always dreamed of getting married in this church. It is a beautiful church, from the high ceilings to the long aisle to walk down with my father,” she said. The wedding was attended by approximately 80 of their family and friends, although some of the out-of-state guests didn’t attend because of Covid concerns. The most treasured part of Larissa’s wedding was getting to marry her best friend, but one of her favorite parts of the wedding was the fireworks show her husband surprised her with halfway through the reception. The stress of wedding planning was worth it in the end for Larissa and her husband. Even though brides who

The Covid pandemic isn’t over, so outdoor weddings remain a popular choice. Approximately 125 guests attended Ryan and Kaitlan Gaworski’s wedding at their family farm in Ottawa. Covid was a concern for some of those guests – and an outdoor venue can help ease those fears.
A breath of fresh air Outdoor weddings continue to shine Story by Shannon Serpette Although the wedding industry opened back up in 2021 after a rough 2020, Covid still weighs on the minds of brides and grooms, as well as the guests attending weddings. Outdoor weddings, which saw a huge surge in popularity in the past couple of years, aren’t going away anytime soon. They offer a little peace of mind for all in attendance. Even when they take place in a barn or covered structure, guests enjoy knowing they are just a few steps from fresh air whenever the mood strikes. When Ryan and Kaitlan (Van Hamme) Gaworski were thinking about wedding venues for their Oct. 8, 2021, wedding, there was only one place that seemed ideal – their family farm in Ottawa. “It was the only venue that made perfect sense to us,” Kaitlan said. While throwing a wedding and being responsible for all the little details was daunting, it was a role Kaitlan was happy to tackle if it meant having her wedding on the land that she and her husband love so much. “I love throwing parties, so I enjoyed the planning very much. I started very early on with my décor so that I was
not rushing as it got closer to the day,” she said. She said that finding great vendors helped her tremendously with all the planning, and they opted for a cupcake bar instead of having a formal wedding cake. “Locally, we used Hy-Vee for our catering, both food and cupcakes. They were amazing to work with, the food was hot and delicious, and they made the clean-up so incredibly easy,” Kaitlan said. Despite all the planning, the couple took time to do something healthy for themselves in the months leading up to the wedding. “We both felt like we wanted to feel our best on our wedding day, so we watched what we ate and took many walks. Together, we lost about 100 pounds prior to our big day,” she said. “We were surprised at how well we did. It was a lot easier doing it together.” Even with some last-minute curveballs, the ceremony went off as planned. “Despite the rain and change of ceremony location two hours before the ceremony, it was the perfect day,” she said. Through her experience, Kaitlan has gained some newfound wisdom she’d like to share with other brides. “Relax – it will all come together. Do not stress about the things you can not control because, at the end of the day, it isn’t about all of that,” she said. “Enjoy the little moments because it truly does fly by.”

are just in the planning phase will have some stress to deal with, Larissa offered some words of wisdom to help them when making decisions. “At first, I would’ve said, don’t do the big wedding, go elope. But honestly, I would just tell the bride, this is your wedding – it’s not for anyone
else but you and your future husband. Whatever you two want, do that,” she said. “Everyone is going to have their own opinion about your day, but don’t let that bother you. Be ‘selfish’ about it, even if you’re not that person. It is the one day in your lifetime when the whole day revolves around you. Don’t try to make everyone else happy. Feeling Fit Fab on the Big Day T
here is always pressure involved in a wedding – pressure in the union of two individuals, the family/ guest dynamic, food arrangements, color choices, location, venue, and more. For brides and grooms, there’s the added pressure of feeling and looking their best when all eyes are on them on the big day. That pressure causes many brides and grooms to ramp up their exercise routines before their weddings. Baley and Heather Lehr of Ottawa were married on Sept. 25, 2021, at Queen of Holy Rosary Shrine Church in LaSalle. Although they both live an active life-

style, they stepped it up before the big day. “I would say we did increase the frequency of workouts the month leading to our wedding,” Heather said. “We have a weight set in our basement where we both did our workouts – the convenience of being able to work out at any time of the day helped with our busy schedules. I did a lot of HIIT workouts that incorporated strength training because my main goal was to increase muscle tone. Baley normally does strength-based workouts, but he included more cardio than usual leading up to our wedding.”
The Lehrs weren’t the only local couple married that day who were beefing up their fitness goals before their wedding day. Before Larissa Magana added a hyphen and Daniel Goodyear’s last name on Sept. 25, she had served as a personal trainer to other brides and members of wedding parties. When she became engaged, she felt the pressure to be in tip-top shape for her wedding day. “Being a physical trainer, I felt there was a lot of pressure like I had to be perfect,” said Magana-Goodyear, 31, who was born and See FIT page 15

raised in Streator. “But I’m still human, and I didn’t have to feel perfect or need to be that perfect for anybody else. I just needed to feel good for myself. “There were a lot of ups and downs. I have 22 clients and couldn’t do everything for myself. I was more for my clients than I was for me. I squeezed in fitness for myself when I could. It was harder, but I didn’t stress about it. The stress behind a wedding is insane. You go into it thinking, ‘Weddings are so fun.’ Then you get to the nitty-gritty details and it’s insane, crazy.” Magana-Goodyear cut some of the stress with the mindset that it’s her wedding, and she doesn’t need to worry about how anyone else thinks she looks. At the same time, she’s a trainer whose everyday job is to help others look and feel better about themselves. Why wouldn’t she want to feel spectacular on one of the biggest days of her life while wearing an amazing wedding dress? “I wasn’t trying to be in shape for anyone else but me. I just needed to know that I felt good in my dress and that I felt confident,” she said. “In the end, it’s just going up there with your future husband, walking down the aisle, and feeling beautiful inside.” Magana-Goodyear, who helps clients at three different locations in Streator, Results Physical Therapy and Fitness, BizzyBee Activity and Learning Center, and The Edge Gym & Fitness, doesn’t like cardiovascular workouts and she focuses more on strength training. But she added more cardio to her routine so she could look how she wanted to in her wedding dress, putting more time in on the treadmill and the elliptical
as well as participating in her high-intensity interval training (HIIT) classes while teaching. Magana-Goodyear also made sure she got in 10,000 steps every day. Even while making modifications in her cardio fitness, she never looked at the scale, so numbers would never bother her. “My weight never changed. I tell my clients to not even think about the scale because a scale doesn’t know the difference between fat and muscle,” Magana-Goodyear said. “I tell my clients the inches are what truly matter. You go by pictures and a tape measure. I lost a couple of inches around the waist and my midsection. I also lost a few inches around the chest, where women don’t want to lose inches.” She will tell you she is not a dietitian and can’t formulate a weekly meal plan. However, she will give you some helpful tips to lose weight. “It’s all about diet. You can’t spot reduce, and that’s really hard for anyone to understand,” Magana-Goodyear said. “People think they can just do sit-ups or crunches all day long. It’s not really going to do anything. It’s going to strengthen your core and that’s about it. “A stronger core is very important, but what you’re doing is building muscle under the fat, and you’re going to make yourself look bigger and feel bigger. If you don’t lose the fat, you’re not going to get a six-pack,” she added. On her fitness journey, she upped her protein intake because it’s extremely important for gaining lean muscle. Magana-Goodyear also counted macros instead of calories and made sure she was eating the right carbs while cutting fatty foods. Healthy carbs include sweet potatoes, brown rice, and white rice. She stayed away from the popular Keto Diet and also
tells her clients to because she feels it negatively influences women’s hormones, isn’t sustainable, and is stressful in terms of people living their lives and being healthy at the same time. “I try to help my clients get in better shape but while they’re still living their lives,” Magana-Goodyear said. “It’s more of a lifestyle change than a diet. I want to train you to make a better lifestyle for yourself. If you want to go out with your friends and have a drink, go enjoy yourself, and maybe have some fried food. “But know what you’re putting into your body. I want you to make the right decision. Instead of saying, ‘I can’t have that,’ I want you to be able to say, ‘I don’t want to have that. It’s not good for me.’” Focusing on inches instead of numbers on a scale, eating healthy carbohydrates, not stressing yourself on lowcarb diets, hitting the 10,000 step milestone daily, strength training, and staying away from alcohol were the key factors of Magana-Goodyear looking how she wanted to on her wedding day. In reality, it all started with a mindset and a goal. “Set your goals, figure out a plan to reach those goals, and stick with it. It’s all about consistency. If I were to eat a cheeseburger every day, eventually, I’m going to get bigger,” Magana-Goodyear said. “If I stick to a clean diet, eventually I’m going to reach my goals and be where I want to be. “If you get off track, make tomorrow better than it was today. Make the next day better than yesterday. The one question I tell my clients to ask themselves is, ‘Is what I’m doing going to take me closer to my goal or further from my goal?’ Before you eat something questionable or skip gym days, think about the decision and whether it’s moving you toward or away from your goal,” she said.
