Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers has enhanced its surgical capabilities by adding Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery for total hip, total knee, and partial knee replacement surgeries.
An innovative treatment solution intended to relieve painful arthritis of the knee or hip, the advanced surgical technique has been associated with less pain, less need for pain medications, reduced hospital length of stay, and improved knee flexion and soft tissue protection.
What exactly is Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery?
For patients having hip or knee replacement surgery with the Mako System, it all starts with a CT scan to give the surgeon more information about the patient’s anatomy.
Images from the CT scan are then used to create a 3D CTbased model of the patient’s hip or knee joint, which the surgeon uses to create a personalized surgical plan based on the patient’s unique anatomy. The 3D model also assists the surgeon during the joint replacement procedure.
In the operating room, the surgeon follows the patient’s personalized surgical plan while preparing the bone for the hip or knee implant, depending on the type of surgery. This essentially means removing diseased bone and cartilage.
Paul
M.D., are using Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery at Morris Hospital for total hip, total knee, and partial knee replacement surgeries.
The surgeon guides Mako’s robotic arm within the predefined surgical area, while Mako’s AccuStop TM technology helps the surgeon stay within the planned boundaries that were defined when the personalized preoperative plan was created.
For some patients, this can mean preserving more soft tissue. For others, it can mean saving more healthy bone.
Does a robot actually perform the surgery?
No. It’s important to understand that robotic arm-assisted surgery is still performed by the surgeon, not a robot.
“Mako does not perform the surgery, make decisions on its own, or move without the surgeon guiding it,” explains Dr. Paul Perona, an orthopedic surgeon with Morris Hospital Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. “The surgeon guides Mako’s robotic arm during the surgery and is able to make adjustments to the plan at any time as needed.”
What type of surgeries are performed at Morris Hospital with the Mako System?
At Morris Hospital, the Mako System is used in the following types of orthopedic surgeries:
• Mako for Partial Knee replacement is a treatment option for adults living with early- to midstage osteoarthritis that has not yet progressed to all three compartments of the knee.
• Mako for Total Knee replacement is a treatment option for adults living with mid- to late-stage osteoarthritis of the knee. With a Mako Total Knee replacement, the entire knee joint is replaced.
• Mako for Total Hip replacement is intended for patients who suffer from noninflammatory or inflammatory degenerative joint disease, which may include osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, and hip dysplasia.
Which physicians at Morris Hospital are trained in Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery?
Morris Hospital Orthopedic Surgeons Ahmed Eldib, M.D., and Paul Perona, M.D., are both trained in Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery.
What should I do if I’m experiencing joint pain in my hip or knee?
Because each patient is unique and can experience joint pain
for different reasons, it’s important to talk to a physician about the reason for joint pain in order to understand the treatment options available. Typically, joint replacement surgery is only recommended after more conservative methods of treatment are no longer providing relief from pain.

The medical field is comprised of many professionals working in concert to keep patients healthy, which involves treating any conditions that arise. Individuals may be treated by various types of doctors in their lifetime, and each is an expert in his or her field. According to Medical News Today, most physicians are categorized as primary care or specialty care.
Navigating the health care system can be confusing. Recognition of the specialties of various types of doctors can make it easier to make it through that system.
• General practitioner: Also known as a family physician, or primary care doctor, these are the doctors patients are likely to encounter most often. They care for patients during routine checkups and screening tests; provide immunizations; and manage ongoing medical conditions. GPs also may be internists, treating both common and complex illnesses.
• Pediatrician: Pediatricians specialize in the care of children from birth and up. Although there is no set age when patients will transition from a pediatrician to an adult doctor, Kids Health says the switch is typically made between the ages of 18 and 21.
• Geriatric medicine specialists: These doctors focus on treating elderly patients and the medical conditions that can develop as a person ages. Geriatric doctors work in private offices, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, and some even make house calls.
• Endocrinologists: An endocrinologist is an expert in the study of the body’s hormones, says the Cleveland Clinic. They diagnose and treat many different conditions that affect the endocrine system, including diabetes, reproductive issues and thyroid conditions.
• Dermatologist: Skin, hair and nail conditions are handled by a dermatologist. Dermatologists routinely treat conditions like acne, moles, scarring, rashes, and more.
• Nephrologists: Individuals with kidney diseases as well as high blood pressure and fluid and mineral imbalances will likely see a nephrologist.
• Ophthalmologist: Although many conditions of the eye can be diagnosed and treated by optometrists, ophthalmologists are medical doctors who can treat every kind of eye condition. They also can operate on the eyes, according to WebMD.
• Oncologist: Oncologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. They have subspecialties in specific types of cancer, and also may serve as radiation oncologists, who provide radiation cancer treatments.
• Otolaryngologists: Commonly referred to as ear, nose and throat doctors, these professionals treat diseases in these areas of the body. They also treat conditions that affect the neck and respiratory system.
• Pulmonologists: Those with conditions related to breathing issues, such as pneumonia, asthma, emphysema, and lung cancer, can seek out pulmonologists.
These are just some of the many different types of doctors people may visit in their lifetimes.
A board-certified, reconstructive foot and ankle surgeon with Morris Hospital Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Dr. Kyle Pearson diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the lower extremities -- specifically the foot and ankle -- utilizing advanced, non-surgical and surgical treatment options.
He received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Des Moines University and then went on to complete his residency in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery in the Orthopedic Department at the renowned University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Patients can see Dr. Pearson for a wide range of conditions, including foot and ankle trauma, fractures, and sprains, ankle instability, tendon ruptures including Achilles, bunion, hammertoe, heel pain, plantar fasciitis, diabetic foot conditions/limb salvage, sports-related injuries, foot and ankle arthritic conditions, and flatfoot and cavus foot reconstruction.
Dr. Pearson has office locations in Ottawa, Morris, and Joliet. For more information, visit morrishospital. org/footandankle, or call Morris Hospital Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at 815-433-0850.
Q: Why is it important to take good care of my feet and ankles?
Dr. Pearson: Often, people do not realize how important their feet and ankles are until they have problems.
If you have degenerative joint disease in your knees or hips, choose the advanced care at OSF HealthCare Saint Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa and OSF Medical Group – Orthopedics in Mendota.
Our surgeons use Mako SmartRobotics™ technology for minimally invasive knee and hip replacements. With this technology, you can expect:
• Less pain after surgery
• Shorter hospital stay
• Faster recovery
• Better outcome

The foot and ankle are the foundation of the lower extremity, and when issues arise it can cause problems elsewhere within the body. Being proactive is one of the best things you can do to prevent further issues with your foot and ankle.
Q: What can I do to prevent foot or ankle problems?
Dr Pearson: Wearing proper shoe gear is one of the best things you can do, along with regular exercise and stretching. A proper fitting, hard sole tennis shoe with a wide toe box is recommended. It’s also important to have your foot measured by a professional at a shoe store to make sure you are purchasing the right size and fit. If you exercise regularly, work on uneven ground and/or hard surfaces such as concrete, you should change shoe gear on a regular basis. Also, discomfort of your feet or abnormal wear to the tread of the shoe could be signs of needing to purchase new shoe gear. I often see individuals who have trained improperly and increased activities too fast, which could result in stress fractures or tendon pathology. In addition, if you have diabetes mellitus or neuropathy, evaluating your feet on a regular basis is important.
Q: What should I do if I have foot or ankle pain?
Dr. Pearson: If you notice foot or ankle pain, the most important thing you can do is not ignore it. Pain is your body’s way of letting you know something is abnormal. Continued pain is a sign that you need to have your foot and ankle evaluated by a professional such as a foot and ankle surgeon. Being seen sooner than later will often prevent issues that could be easily solved with a nonsurgical modality from turning into something that may require more extensive treatment, including possible surgery.
Q: How does your advanced training make you well qualified to perform foot and ankle surgeries?
Dr. Pearson: During my time at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, I received extensive, well-rounded training in both non-surgical and surgical treatment of the lower extremity. Additionally, I am board-certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons in foot, as well as rear foot and ankle reconstructive surgery, which indicates that I have completed the highest level of requirements to treat pa-
thology of the foot and ankle. By receiving this title and extensive training, I am able to provide advanced procedures for my patients -- including total ankle replacements -- and get them back to normal activity in a quicker fashion.
Q: How do I know when it’s time to see a foot & ankle surgeon?
Dr Pearson: If you have a traumatic injury, I recommend seeking treatment as soon as possible. For other foot and ankle concerns, if you are continuing to have pain after resting, icing, taking oral anti-inflammatories, and activity modifications, you should seek further professional advice from a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon. I am fortunate to be able to provide a full service line of surgical and nonsurgical treatment options, including formal physical therapy, access to medical equipment, X-Ray, MRI and an outpatient surgical center within our Morris office location. Access to these additional services heightens my ability to provide a comprehensive treatment plan in order to get my patients active again as soon as safely possible.
