A senior at Marquette Academy, Danna has been coached by McConnaughhay since grade school and now plays varsity volleyball for her. “I joke that Danna’s my favorite,” McConnaughhay said. “I just love her enthusiasm; she’s just so dedicated. She is the kid I go to when we have a kids camp – she’s always one to step up. “And she’s really good with little kids. When we were doing a league at the YMCA, she’s the first one I asked. She always has a great positive attitude.”

Marquette Academy senior Danna Sanderson is an assistant CCD teacher for second-graders at St. Columba Church.

Engle Lane enters 62nd season

2019 marks the 62nd season at Engle Lane Theatre. Their rich history is an important part of the community. In March of 2018, “Annie, Jr.” was presented as the inaugural production of The Penguin Project in Streator. The Penguin Project productions are unique because all of the roles are filled by young artists with developmental disabilities including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, visual impairment, hearing impairment and other neurological disorders. They are joined on stage by a dedicated group of peer mentors without disabilities who have volunteered to work side-by-side with them throughout the rehearsal process and through the final performance. By providing access to community theatre, The Penguin Project demonstrates that the special challenges of a disability should not handicap a child’s ability to participate in life’s experiences. Established in Peoria, Illinois in 2004, The Penguin Project has evolved into a national program with replication sites like Engle Lane Theatre throughout the United States. The program provides a supportive environment for children with disabilities to explore their creative talents. It has also demonstrated that participation in the performing arts has therapeutic value by enhancing social interaction, communication skills, self-confidence and self-esteem. The impact of the program has reached beyond the stage to create a social network for children who previously had very few friends and limited social opportunities. This year, the Penguin Project production of “Aladdin Jr.” will be presented April 12-14, directed by Jeff Houk and produced by Kathy Hepner. The name of The Penguin Project comes from the fact that the penguin is the only bird who cannot fly. Our penguins may not be able to fly, but that doesn’t mean that their spirits cannot soar. The organization Community Players of Streator, Inc. evolved from a small group of people who simply wanted to put on a show. From their humble beginnings with their first performances in the Streator Township High School auditorium, they are now housed in a beautiful stateof-the-art theater. Officially, the theater’s name is The William C. Schiffbauer Center for the Performing

Through the support of the community over many years, Donna Peterson’s dream of having a local community theater was brought to life and continues today. Dr. William C. Schiffbauer became an early driving force for the group. His background in musical theater performance and enthusiasm helped put Engle Lane on the map in the community. In 1960, Constance Engle generously donated the property where the theater now sits, evolving from a simple warehouse into a wonderfully equipped playhouse affectionately known as “The Barn”.In 2010, a tornado badly damaged the theater, forcing cancellation of the remainder of their summer season. Less than one year later, the newly-remodeled theater was back up and running for a complete season. Hundreds of people have contributed to Engle Lane’s success over the years. From set designers, costumers and technical support, to board members, directors, staff and performers, all have given of themselves unconditionally to the single focus

of putting on a live performance. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, everyone’s contribution is important. People from all walks of life, regardless of experience, are welcome to participate. Once inside the doors of Engle Lane, everyone is part of a dedicated team with the shared goal of doing their very best. Teamwork is essential and lays the very foundation for success in life, both personally and professionally. While everyone works diligently, they receive no monetary compensation. Their reward comes in the form of applause, which makes the dance steps, memorization of lines and hours of preparation worth it. The continuing success of the theatre is due to many factors, among them a very important audience. Over the years, people have faithfully supported the theater through both financial contributions and being faithful in attendance. An all-volunteer board of directors works year-round to oversee operations of the theater. They oversee not only the season’s productions, but also the operations, building and grounds, equipment and inventory.

The 62nd anniversary season lineup includes:

u MAY 13-19: “A Night in the Ukraine,” a Marx Brothers musical comedy directed by Angie McKenzie u JUNE 16-22: “Losing Patients,” a comedy farce directed by Kathy Hepner and Lisa Gill u JULY 14-20: “Mamma Mia,” a musical directed by Karen Leifheit u AUG. 11-17: “Babes in Toyland,” a youth musical directed by Marlee Reel u SEPT. 8-14: “Charley’s Aunt,” a comedy/farce directed by Bill Jankowski u OCT. 6-12: “Bright Star,” a musical drama directed by Samantha Farb. Shows start at 2 p.m. for Sunday matinees and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Season tickets are on sale now starting at just $60 for six shows. Please call the box office at 815-672-3584 and leave a message to purchase your tickets now. You may also visit their website at englelane.org or follow them on Facebook, Engle Lane Theatre. Board President Kathy Missel said, “For over 60 years Engle Lane Theater has been providing Central Illinois with quality live entertainment. The mission of our current board of directors is to continue that tradition.”

first communion. It’s a big time for them because they’re at an age where they can distinguish right from wrong.” While Marquette students are required to complete community service hours, Rick said she has a hunch Danna far exceeds the requirement. “She does not brag, she’s not boastful, and she just does so much and is so involved in her parish ... Her service really sets her apart.” Danna, who is the middle of three girls, is leaning toward attending the University of Illinois, already visiting the campus several times since her older sister, Francesca, attended the college. As far as a major, advertising might be in her future. Already delving into creating social media groups for fellow students and youths, writing articles for the Marquette Academy website, and participating in fundraising efforts, she’s already gained experience of how to reach an audience. “I totally see social media as the future, and advertising has always been interesting to me. It’s super interesting looking at how to use different color schemes to showcase things.” Her parents met in the 1990s in Ottawa when her mom, Cynthia, and her best friend, traveled from the Philippines to work as medical technologists at the Ottawa hospital. Her father, Ed, farmed in Leland, on a farm that has been in his family since the 1850s. All three of their children – Francesca, Danna and youngest Andrea – have been part of the Marquette Academy family. Andrea also plays on the volleyball team. “My parents always raised me to have good morals,” Danna said. “In life you always need God on your side if you’re struggling ... in tricky

While she may not always start for the volleyball team, McConnaughhay said Danna is a leader on the court – never missing a practice or game and giving it her all 100 percent of the time. “She has the best sense of humor ... Even in an intense situation, she just knows how to make people around her feel comfortable. She’s a physical and mental leader, and just has an aura that makes people want to be around her,” McConnaughhay said. Danna’s also been involved in cheer all four years at Marquette, and most, if not all the school’s clubs, including Key Club and Student Council. She’s also a student ambassador, visiting classrooms to speak with students about transitioning to high school at Marquette. Recently, she was gearing up for a Scholastic Bowl tournament. “It’s like a game show; you have your little buzzer,” she explained. “I contribute miscellaneous facts, maybe some biology and history – that’s always been my favorite subject.” She’s in the top 10 of her class, and teachers describe Danna as a delight to have in the classroom. “She’s one of a kind and just has an amazing heart,” said Marquette Academy Principal Brooke Rick, who has Danna in her chemistry class. “She’s so funny, so bubbly, and so hilarious. “She’s one of those kids who just gives back so much and is so involved. You don’t see kids like her every day.” Faith and her church are extremely important to Danna, who is an assistant CCD teacher for second-graders at St. Columba Church in Ottawa. “It’s a big year (for the CCD students) – it’s their first confession,

I feel

like we’re all really good friends; we have the same moral views and if any of us has a problem, we always give good advice for each other.” McConnaughhay said it may not be obvious just how far Danna extends herself. “She’s not in your face with it. She’s such a giving person and I think a lot of times people don’t

realize what she does behind the scenes.” Danna gives credit to her family for providing a strong foundation and helping shape her outlook on life. “I always try to stay positive. There’s always something that can ruin your day, but the sun will always rise.”

Just seven money-saving minutes southwest of the Peru Mall. That’s the way Bruce Steinberg of Steinberg’s Furniture likes to describe the location where the 131-year-old family-run business has been servicing generations of customers. “We’re a little off the beaten path,” said Steinberg, who is the fourth generation of his family to operate the store. “We’re not on the north end of town, but rather the west end, on U.S. Route 6, just a block from local icons like the Igloo DriveIn and Lou’s LaGrotto pizzeria. Anthony Liftgates Inc. serving truckers for 75 years

Countless truck drivers are thankful to over 80 employees of Anthony Liftgates Inc. for saving their backs and shaving precious time off cargo loading and unloading duties. For over 75 years, the manufacturer has made lifting an easy, efficient chore through its registered trademark Liftgates that pick up heavy loads from the ground and hoist them to truck bed level for loading and unloading. Anthony Liftgates customers are truck body manufacturers and truck equipment dealers/distributors. Its end users are some of the large, national companies like Black Horse Carriers, Target, IdeaLease and NationaLease. The company makes four distinct types of Liftgates ---- Pickup, RailTrac, TuckUnder and Conventional Series. The TuckUnder Series is the most common, that folds up to form a tailgate. A variety of models exist for each type. For example, there’s a RailTrac model with two hydraulic pumps and motors for heavy capacity loads of 3,500 pounds up to 6,500 pounds. The extra pump and motor serve as backup if the other fails. The Walker family venture started when the current generation’s grandfather, Lawrence Walker cut his teeth at the Anthony Co. in the 1930s as vice president and general manager of the Streator-based company. It was at Anthony that Frank Novotney, a Streator native, brought Lawrence his invention of Liftgates. In 1941, the Anthony Company began designing, manufacturing, marketing and selling the Liftgate product. By 1945, Lawrence Walker founded his own company, Streator Dependable Manufacturing, turning out Liftgate parts as well as tractor seats. Lawrence’s sons Patrick, Ralph and Dale, ran that business until the late 1970s. In 1982, Streator Dependable bought the Liftgate product line from the Anthony Company. And from there, it was moved a stone’s throw away from historical Route 66, in Pontiac, where it remains today. Liftgates and parts are manufactured in a plant of over 110,000 square feet by a skilled group of craftsmen. The company added a storage building last summer and are in the process

Family atmosphere at Streator Children’s Clinic

Going to the pediatrician’s office can sometimes be daunting. It involves thoughts of getting shots, awkward talks about puberty, and saying “ahhhhh” when you think you might have strep throat. Yet, Dr. San Gabriel strives to make children’s trips to her office a positive rather than a scary one. Coming originally from the Philippines and after completing a pediatric residency in Chicago, Dr. San Gabriel came in 2001 as a pediatrician and the proprietor of the Streator Children’s Clinic. She immediately felt blessed to have been welcomed by the community. When it comes to treating her patients, she sees them as members of her extended family. In turn, she hopes to recreate that same family atmosphere in her office. As they enter the clinic, parents and patients are greeted with warm and familiar faces. Kid-friendly artwork hangs on the walls of the waiting room with a variety of toys in the exam room. Faces of children once frozen with fear depart the office with a smile, a clean bill of health, and a special treat. “If there’s one thing the kids don’t forget is there’s something waiting for them at the end of the visit,” Dr. San Gabriel said. “As soon as they’re done, they jump out

The same staff worked at the clinic before she took over Dr. Mooss’ pediatric practice. Though a few have retired,

Dr. San Gabriel filled those positions with Streator locals who are closely tied to the community.

Keady Gillman, one of the original staff, is the office manager; Jessica Garcia also joins j Keady at the front desk; Rosa Chavez, RN; and Earlene York, CNA assists Dr. San Gabriel as the seasoned clinical staff. Everyone, however, is cross-trained so anyone can pitch in to help. Communication and efficiency play a vital part in the clinic. Dr. San Gabriel and her staff understand that their patients’ time is important. The office utilizes current technology to improve accessibility and contact with parents. As Dr. San Gabriel suggests, “Parents are an important part of the process. Their children’s physical and emotional health begins at home and continues as part of a collaborative effort in our office. We work as a team!” Parents are encouraged to

ask Dr. San Gabriel questions and she does her best to answer, “especially to clear their worries about what they read on the internet!” As members of the same team, doctor, staff, parents and family grow into a tight-knit family. At times, Dr. San Gabriel says it’s bittersweet to see a lifelong patient move on after high school. Although she now sees patients until they’re 21 years old, she takes pride in knowing she was a part of her patients’ families as she watches them grow from newborn babies to mature young men and women as they are ready to make their mark on the world. “I do get a kick witnessing that! That feeling never gets old,” Dr. San Gabriel said. Also one of the most enjoyable experiences in her work is to see her patients becoming parents themselves, returning to her office with their children of their own. If you haven’t met Dr. San Gabriel and her staff yet, you’re likely to spot them around town as they plan to make themselves more visible at local events, festivals and community gatherings. Whether children are ill, need a physical or simply want to say hello, Dr. San Gabriel and her staff are ready to welcome you into their family.

Logic, not luck, guides Alex Barker

Marquette Academy student takes pragmatic approach in life CHARLES STANLEY For The Times

There’s a strong streak of logic in Alex Barker, a senior at Marquette Academy High School in Ottawa. For instance, take his plans for the future. Next fall he will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he will be enrolled in the physician’s assistant program. He has been planning on a career in medicine for some time. But the logical move, he decided, was not to commit to becoming a doctor in a specific speciality. Instead, Alex felt as a physician’s assistant he could gain some insight in different medical disciplines and ultimately pick the one that best fit him. Plus, since a medical career typically requires a good brain and good hands, Alex logically decided to go out for sports with a minimum chance of him suffering concussions or broken fingers. His choices were track and golf, a sport favored by his dad and grandfather.

Hagi & Baker Funeral Home takes pride in family tradition

The Hagi & Baker Funeral Home has been serving the Streatorland area since 1895. Its history begins in the community of Ransom and then a second location in Streator in the 100 block of South Park Street in 1920. John J. “Jack” Hagi then purchased the residence at 205 High Street in 1936 and moved the funeral home into that facility. It is the oldest standing home in Streator having been built in 1873. It was built by Martin J. Overholt at the cost of $10,000. Mr. Overholt died in 1877. The home was then purchased by E.H. Bailey, paymaster of the Streator Coal Company. Additions were later added in 1950 to construct a larger chapel, preparation room and lounge. Jack operated the funeral home along with the assistance of his son-in-law John Kerestes, until Jack’s passing in 1974. John continued the business, along with his wife Mary Hagi-Kerestes, until his passing in 2013. Mary passed away in 2016. Bryan M. Baker, who was born and raised in Streator, became a funeral director in 1989. He graduated from Stre-

Alex gets a lot of outdoor time, Andrea said. “He’s active in the fishing club,” she said. “He likes to do things, he doesn’t just like to sit. “He’s a very self-motivated kid,” she said. “I’ve never had to push him to do anything — except maybe clean up his room — and he’s actually really good at understanding his own limits. “I think everything he’s involved in is well within his comfort zone,” she said. “He’s always been really good about knowing when there’s too much. There will be times when he says ‘You know mom, I just need a Saturday when I do nothing.’ And then he takes a Saturday and does nothing.” Andrea said one of the things that impressed her about her son at an early age happened when he was in second grade at Haskin Elementary School in Sandwich. He saw a wheelchair-bound friend could not use the schoolyard swing because he was unable to hold onto the chains and needed additional support. “Alex came to me and said, ‘Mom, I want to help my buddy so that he can swing on the swings’. “He had this idea in second grade that ‘everybody should feel when you lose your tummy’ — that roller coaster feeling when the swing reaches its pinnacle. He said ‘I want everybody to be able to feel that.’ Alex’s first plan was simple: just hook a stroller up to the swing. That’s logical. But when his teacher and principal explained the cost and Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, the handicapped swing project had be sidelined. “I said to him ‘Maybe we needed to hold onto the idea until you’re a little older,’ ” Andrea said. Then, when Alex was selecting an Eagle Scout project, “that’s when it came back around again,” she said. A member of Plano Scout Troop 71 where his dad is scoutmaster, Alex led the effort to raise funds to pur-

chase, and last June install, a new two-bay swing at Haskin. The combination model has one traditional saddle swing and a Burke Freedom Swing Seat. Besides earning the rank of Eagle Scout, Alex’s project also was one of the top three Eagle Scout projects that year for the Boy Scouts’ Three Fires Council. Alex started in Scouting at the youngest possible age as a Tiger Scout, a program for first graders. He enjoys the activities such as camping. “I’ve been to a lot of cool places with scouts,” he said. One standout trip was two years ago to work with the National Park Service at Dry Tortugas, a small group of islands 70 miles from Key West, Florida. Its place in history was as the prison for Dr. Samuel Mudd, the physician who treated actor John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. “Scouting is a wonderful addition to Alex’s regular education and his religious education,” Andrea said. The Barkers are members of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Somonauk. After sixth grade, Alex transferred from his public school to Marquette Academy Elementary School. Following his graduation there he moved up to the high school. “The public school just didn’t fit our needs,” Andrea said. “We wanted more out of his teachers, so we landed on Marquette.” One important factor in the change was the bus service Marquette Academy provides. These days, however,

Alex drives. That allows him the flexibility for athletics and to take college classes. His Volkswagen Golf isn’t the sportiest car. “But he likes the gas mileage it gets,” Andrea said. That’s logical. Marquette has been a good fit, Alex said. “I think the small class sizes have let me get to know the students and teachers better,” he said. “I have more time with the teachers and it’s easy to go to them. I feel Marquette is more of a family style school. Like, instead of each kid being a number, they’re a person.” Marquette High School Principal Brooke Rick sees a lot of fine qualities in Alex. “The work ethic, the dedication and the compassion that this kid has is impressive,” she said. “He’s so intelligent and super hard-working — and he has a kind heart.” Rick sees Alex up close as one of the students in the Honors Chemistry II class she teaches. “Not only is he a good student and a pleasure to have in class, but he has a dry sense of humor that goes over well.” Rick says Alex gives a lot back to Marquette. “He goes above and beyond as a volunteer and as a leader in the school, yet he is very modest about his accomplishments,” she said. “He’s not at all boastful. He’ll just say ‘It’s no big deal.’ ” So, that makes him a good role model for other students? “That makes him a good role model for adults,” Rick replies. That’s logical.

Casanova Chiropractic: New location, same friendly faces

For those with chronic back pain or just looking to maintain their spinal health, there’s a new place with the same friendly faces to visit. Casanova Chiropractic relocated from their “purple house” on the south side of Ottawa where they’ve spent 12 years to 408 W. Main St. in December. Dr. Brett Casanova and Dr. Janet Casanova said there are a number of new features that patients love. For instance, there is now a dedicated resting room which is used after patients receive adjustments. The dimly lit room and comfortable recliners accompanied with calming music and salt lamps create the perfect environment to allow a patient’s body to relax following an appointment. The larger space also allows the office better accommodations for the family as a whole which includes family adjustment rooms where parents can be with their kids as well as an entire kids waiting area complete with tents and a friendly stuffed giraffe named “Stretch” for kids to play with. And don’t think the services and specialties offered

Delicious is closer than you think at Rosati’s Pizza

For delicious pizza and other tasty entrees, one of Starved Rock Country’s most popular restaurants is Rosati’s Pizza, 375 W. Stevenson Road in Ottawa. Besides pizza, Rosati’s menu includes calzones, chicken wings, salads, pasta, sandwiches, chicken, appetizers and desserts in a family atmosphere that features wall-to-wall televisions (40 screens) as well as a projection screen for hungry and thirsty sports fans. The restaurant also has a large, full-service bar with daily drink specials. Plus, for guests hungry and in a hurry, individual slices of pizza are available all day ready to go. According to its corporate web page, Rosati’s traces its history back to a family patriarch who served flat-breads to Al Capone in the 1920s, this Illinois-based pizzeria has grown to nearly 225 locations in 15 states. As with many Italian families, the Rosati clan’s roots run deep. In the 1920s, Italian immigrant Silvario Rosati served Pizza A’Olia — a flat-bread with garlic and oil — as a pre-meal treat for customers like Al Capone. His son, Sam, also opened a successful restaurant, and when third-generation Dick Rosati returned from the war, he decided to dive head-first into the pizza biz, opening Rosati’s Pizza in 1964 in Mount Prospect. “The entire family worked in the store, day and night — all of the brothers and sisters, plus their spouses,” explains Marla Topliff, president of Rosati’s Pizza, headquartered in Elgin. “Pizza wasn’t as well-known then, so people would actually come in requesting apple pies, not pizza pies.” As a carryout operation and a pioneer in the fledgling concept of delivery, Rosati’s offered impressive variety, with three crusts (thin, Double Dough and Chicago-style), plus entrées like huge sandwiches and pasta dinners. And, with the family name already ingrained in the area, Rosati’s took off. Employees soon wanted to start their own locations, leading to expansion that grew organically for 40 years; in 2005, the 60-location business officially decided to franchise.

Today, the pizzeria counts over 200 locations in 15 states and even bottles its own wine —perfect for its newest concept, Rosati’s Pizza Pub, which offers dine-in service in a family-friendly atmosphere. To control franchise quality, the business private-labels its ingredients, distributes recipe books and regularly routes operations staff to locations. They also handle graphic design, social media and catering promotions in-house. “We’re a family business — still owned by the Rosati family — and we consider our franchisees as part of that family,” Topliff says. “We call them often and let them know we’re here for them; we know all of them by name.” “The Rosatis are an amazing family to work for, and it shows in their pizza, product and franchisees,” said Topliff. “They’re fiercely loyal to quality and their customers. They just want to keep spreading that love to others.” In February of 2017, Rosati’s Pizza in Ottawa took the largest slice of votes in all categories of the second annual Pizza Games contest, sponsored by The Times. And in December 2018, the company began operating under the new management of Rose Cummings II and Ane Rosendahl and ownership of their corporate offices. Both are excited to continue offering the great atmosphere and flavors that customers have come to expect and look forward to seeing you during your next visit. The Ottawa restaurant features: u Free delivery every day until 3 p.m. u Half off any pizza and drinks during Happy Hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. u Special sirens lights, sound and fog for Blackhawks games goals and other sporting events. u An exclusive Tangled Roots beer, Rosati’s Golden Ale. u Trivia every Monday night at 7 p.m. u Tablets for kids to play free games while at a table waiting for their favorite meal. u New all-natural strawberry-infused on-site margaritas. u Food specials Sunday through Thursday.

Pirate’s Cay Indoor Water Park offers year-round fun It’s not every day that you get to stand in a deluge of water being dumped from a giant bucket! But at Pirate’s Cay Waterpark in Sheridan, it happens daily! Located just minutes north of Ottawa off Illinois Route 71, it is 31,000 square feet of awesome! The park includes a pirate’s ship themed children’s playscape with operator-controlled water features, water guns, slides and dump bucket that is fun for the whole family. The party room offers a great economical option for

families who are looking for something different than the traditional party.” The park offers several different tiers in pricing. If you stay at Fox River Resort, either through a public booking with IHG.Com or with a timeshare ownership, there is a discounted rate. Party packages can be tailor fit to your specific needs! Finkelstein Eye Associates have been providing eye care in the Illinois Valley community since 1986. Dr. Finkelstein and Dr. Pode, both board-certified ophthalmologists, continue to bring innovation and cutting edge technology to their patients. We are dedicated to bringing our patients the most upto-date procedures in cataract and refractive intraocular lens technology closer to home. There are more options to restore vision and reduce the dependence of glasses correction after cataract surgery and we’re glad to be able to provide this high level of care to our patients. If you and your family need care you don’t need to travel to other places. Our offices in Peru and Streator have continued to improve our diagnostic equipment and can offer services that were once only available in major metropolitan areas. Advances in diagnosis

This allows them to be part of something bigger than just coming here from 9 to 5 and then leaving the area. We are fortunate to have exceptional people to work within our offices and at the hospital who live in the community we serve. The Streator office had been closed from March 18 through 26 to clean up and repair the building after a pickup truck accidentally drove into the front of the building. No one was serious-

ly injured. During that time, patient care was continued at the Peru location. “We wanted to reopen as soon as possible to prevent a long disruption of services in our Streator community,” Dr. Finkelstein said. Care continued on March 27 although the business section of the building was still closed for repairs. “We were back serving our patients after being closed only 10 days,” Dr. Pode said. “Everything with the repair is going well and the office is running smoothly and efficiently.” Dr. Finkelstein and Dr. Pode would like to thank their patients for their patience and support.

Xavier Dean

Leader of the pack

Streator High student doesn’t need to run first to lead the way DEREK BARICHELLO dbarichello@shawmedia.com 815-431-4073

For The Times | Steve Stout

Streator High student Xavier Dean laces up his running shoes at the high school’s track. Xavier participates in cross country and track, growing to enjoy long distance running.

In cross country training, the more skilled runners want to run fast with the lead pack. Xavier Dean, however, doesn’t mind running in the rear group. The Streator High School senior is not loafing, nor is he a slow runner. He runs with the final pack during training to encourage students new to cross country training to perservere through their first 5- or 7-mile runs. Those first runs can be challenging, said cross country coach Brad Brittin. Xavier repeats the tips to new runners his father gave him. “Just get to the next tree.” “Now get to the next stop sign.” “Now let’s get to the next street.” “Keep running.” When Brittin saw Xavier’s willingness to run in the last group and heard the encouragement Xavier was giving, he knew the senior was a true leader. “He’s willing to sacrifice,” said Brittin, who is also Xavier’s guidance counselor. “He connects

with people at all different levels. He always wants to help out the young students, the inexperienced students.” Xavier’s leadership in cross country was just one reason Xavier was selected with about 30 students in his grade level to participate in the high school’s peer leadership program. The program consists of upperclassmen serving as mentors to underclassmen to help them better transition to high school. Xavier is attracted to the inexperienced runners, because he can relate to what it’s like being new or not natural to running. He received a D in seventh grade PE after he ran the mile in 16 minutes. Xavier’s father Greg believed it was time for Xavier, who had a heavier build then, to get a Y membership, and then an idea blossomed for Xavier and Greg to train for a 5k his grandfather helped organize in Princeton. Xavier trained with his dad from December to June with his dad reminding him he could stop if he didn’t like it. When the time came, Xavier ran the 5k race in 47 minutes.

“I felt glad that I finished,” Xaiver said. “But I was disappointed too, because I felt like I could do more. I asked my dad, ‘are there any more races I could run?’ ” Xavier has since run in a 10k and a half marathon. His goal is to eventually run a full marathon. He also joined cross country and competes in the long-distance events in track. He’s discovered he likes running. “With running, it makes me feel stress-free,” Xavier said. “I feel good because it makes me feel like there’s less weight on my shoulders. Everything going on, if I have a stressful project or homework, I can go for a good run and not worry about it.” Expanding his perspective, Xavier also has an autistic brother Tyler, which he said gives him a lot of a patience. There are certain words or phrases that trigger Tyler to say certain things, which in turn require an appropriate response. Xavier said interactions can take 15 minutes to communicate. Xavier has a close relationship with his younger brother, because he’s willing to put in the time necessary to interact and understand him. “He and his brother have a bond,” Brittin said. “Not

He’s been selected to be a part of the wind ensemble. He also plays on the scholastic bowl team. Whenever he has a free minute, he likes to read sci-fi or fantasy books and Greek and Norse mythology. Yet he still makes time to help his peers. “Certain people aren’t able to do the same exact things as other people are able to do,” he said. “Looking at a sentence, I might be able to see the grammatical and spelling errors, but since I understand that, I can help them out and volunteer when I can. I try explaining it to them until they say ‘OK, I understand.’ ” Inspired by the work with his brother, Xavier wants to go to college at Illinois State University and become a special education teacher to help others. He’s volunteered at the brain injury clinic in Peru. “I understand what certain kids are going through,” Xavier said. “I can help them, because I know how to work with them.” Again, Xavier is showing he doesn’t have to be running in the front of the pack to be a leader.

Customers have gotten their kicks at Wright’s Furniture

Wright’s Furniture may not be as old as Route 66, but our customers have gotten plenty of kicks. Our downtown Pontiac business is celebrating 66 years of serving Central Illinois. While maintaining our commitment to providing only the finest in furniture and high-quality customer service, we continue to expand our inventory and make the latest lines available to our valued clients. Wright’s Furniture was founded by Lloyd Wright on April 1, 1953. Lloyd graduated from North Central College in 1934 and spent 19 years working for the Gambles chain of stores in six different Illinois cities, selling a variety of products including hardware, toys, appliances, tires, farm equipment, furniture, floor coverings, motor scooters and much more. His great American dream began in a 4,000-square-foot store that had been Wood’s Furniture in downtown Pontiac. After four years, Lloyd moved the business to a larger, former Montgomery Ward location, a few blocks away. Over the years, Wright’s grew in size by purchasing adjoining buildings and knocking holes through the walls. Today showrooms and warehouses total approximately 60,000 square feet of floor space. Lloyd retired in 1985, but Wright’s is still family-owned and operated by Lloyd’s son, Gary, and Gary’s sons, Shawn and Eric. We are proud of our excellent staff of 25 dedicated sales, service, installation, delivery, clerical, advertising, and management personnel. We display home furnishings from an unusually large number of manufacturers including most of the “famous brands” and offer great furniture from around the world plus many great “Made in America” resources.

Starved Rock Lodge ... where the past is always present

The Times

Reporter/Anchor Ethan Krueger and News Director Rick Koshko are part of the team at Ottawa’s WCMY, WRKX that brings local news to listeners.

Ottawa’s WCMY, WRKX radio stations continue to evolve

Ottawa’s first radio station, AM1430 WCMY, has been on the air for nearly 70 years and companion FM 95.3 WRKX first took to the air in 1964, but that hasn’t stopped them from continuing to evolve. The stations continue to offer new programming including on 95.3 JackFM where over two years ago they introduced Jonathan “Shap” Shapiro as the live morning host from 5:30 to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday. Most of the week, 95.3 JackFM is a music-intensive Variety Hits format, but Shap takes calls and offers trivia to listeners looking to get their day started with a little extra pep. “He has fun with people to get their day started as they’re heading into work,” said Kathy Missel, General Manager of the Ottawa stations owned by NRG Media. 95.3 JackFM continues to receive plenty of positive feedback on Shap who is known by listeners for his many years on the air with several Starved Rock Country stations. For those hoping to get more of an in-depth look at local issues and events, they can tune to “The Voice of Starved Rock Country” 1430 WCMY. Long known for its programming devoted to La Salle County’s largest industry, Agriculture, WCMY’s early morning programming features news and information specifically for the farm community from the RFD and Brownfield Networks. Jay LeSeure, a veteran broadcaster locally for over 30 years, hosts “The Morning Meeting” weekdays from 5:30 to 10 a.m. “Jay is Ottawa radio to our loyal listeners,” Missel said. “His focus on local events, issues and personalities is what great local radio is all about.” Maggie Frost, former host of “The Afternoon Drive,” now takes over the mic at 10 a.m. and continues the station’s focus on local programming. Frost concludes her on-air shift by hosting “Radio Trader” from 11:45 a.m until noon. WCMY continues to offer a full noon hour of news and information programming headlined by News Director Rick Kos-

Starved Rock Lodge & Conference Center is in its 80th year of welcoming guests from La Salle County and all over the world. Surrounded by more than 3,500 acres of forest, canyons and seasonal waterfalls of the National Historic Landmark of Starved Rock State Park, the Lodge has been diligently worked to protect its historic ambiance. “Our goal is to make Starved Rock Lodge a destination that’s more than a day trip,” said Amy Trimble, Lodge CEO. “We think we provide great value, all under one roof, combined with an unforgettable experience to all of our guests…that’s why we continue to offer new packages and fun events to enhance their stay.” In an effort to promote mid-week bookings, the “Why Wait for the Weekend,” ad campaign continues to attract adventure-seeking travelers encouraging them to cash in their vacation days and book a midweek getaway. A special menu is offered in the Main Dining Room for “Toast to Tuesday.” This year, the Lodge launched “Give Back Nights” every Wednesday.

In 2019, the Lodge will be the setting for more than 130 weddings, which earned them an award from brides and grooms who posted reviews online on The Knot. Many couples rent Bella the Wedding Trolley which takes the wedding party to a picturesque canyon with a waterfall as a backdrop for amazing photos. Indoor weddings in the Great Hall and outdoor weddings overlooking Starved Rock are paired with a reception in the Starved Rock Room and Great Hall. Guided hikes are offered year ‘round. MegaHikes, which lead participants to all of the canyons in one day, are a highlight in

spring and fall! Historic Trolley Tours depart each weekend with Waterfall & Canyon Tours in the spring, Fall Colors Tours in autumn and Eagle Watching Tours in the winter. River Cruises are offered in the summer months on the Eagle 1 (available only by booking through the Lodge. The Land & Water Cruise includes lunch and the Evening Cruise includes dinner. Music lovers can choose from more than 50 shows which are part of the Lodge’s Tribute to the Stars series of musical tribute shows. CARSTAR continues to provide best in class customer experiences

Grant Crockett and I have known each other for several years with mutual respect for one another being independent family owned and operated businesses in smaller communities. I had always told him that when he was ready to retire I would be interested in his business. My wife, Rachelle, and I have many friends and family in the community and thought this would be a great environment to expand our business. We have now made the transition and maintained the great staff the Crockett family had been blessed with. There has been some aggressive consolidation in our industry so our focus has been the acquisition of businesses to keep locally family owned and operated legacies alive. It is a battle to keep corporate owned and managed businesses out of these small business environments and we are a perfect solution for this. We can now focus on fulfilling the needs of the community with our passion and integrity in hopes of remaining relevant to the City

Additionally, we are experts on processing claims for all carriers and can assist with the communication and workflow of making the painful process more tolerable. Many carriers process claims differently now than they had even in the past five years so we are here as a resource for the customer. We are a CARSTAR Franchise and with that comes a great amount of resources that assist the independent owner. Training, education, and technology are the key components of our business model. The technology in vehicles now has grown rapidly in recent years and we make significant efforts to educate ourselves and our family of

employees with the tools and training necessary to complete these complex repairs. When purchasing a vehicle most people really like the additional features such as blind spot detection systems, adaptive cruise control, parking assist with cameras and sensors, etc., but what they may not realize is how that will significantly affect the repair process. Aside from using the manufacturer’s repair procedures to correctly repair the structure of the vehicle we have the ability to scan and calibrate these complex systems so that the vehicle’s safety features are all operating correctly. It is our objective to be experts at all things during the repair and educate the customer along the way. Since the transition, we have been able to maintain a 94 percent customer satisfaction index rating and 4.8 stars out of 5 in online reviews and will continue to provide best in class customer experiences to those going through the unfortunate experience of an automobile accident.

Devin Lee

Streator High senior wants to join Navy, travel the world DEREK BARICHELLO dbarichello@shawmedia.com 815-431-4073

Devin Lee wants to push the limits. Whether it’s in physical fitness class or on the soccer field, the Streator High School senior pushes herself to see how well she can do. After gaining a taste of foreign travel with a nine-day class trip to Germany, she wants to travel the globe. Japan and Spain are high on her list. She also wants to see South America and Morocco. “I like learning about cultures different from our own, because it teaches you to look at the world differently,” she said, noting the farthest she’s traveled prior to Europe is Florida. Devin’s love for travel drew her to apply for the Naval Academy. She wants to become a naval officer and serve on a ship that voyages the globe. She received a recommendation from Congressman Adam Kinzinger’s office and will learn by April 13 if she is accepted into the Naval

Academy. If she’s not accepted, she plans on attending University of Illinois and serving in the ROTC program. The leadership aspect and physical fitness of serving in the Navy also appeal to her. Additionally, her grandfather and uncle both served in the Navy. But more than anything else, she says: “I really want to travel.” “She really wants to see the world,” said Devin’s guidance counselor Antonella Feyerer at Streator High. “And she wants to see places like Korea.” She enjoyed talking to the locals in Germany and seeing the different geography. On top of learning new things, it gave her a different perspective of home. “I noticed in Germany, the fields are smaller and staggered,” Devin said. “The trees and flora are so much more different. When I got back here, it was just a sea of agriculture. It makes you appreciate the differences more.”

Carlson Auto Body Shop has been serving the Ottawa area for decades

For more than 93 years, the name Carlson has been synonymous in the Ottawa area with automobiles. Carlson Motor Sales, a Plymouth and Valiant car dealership, was started in 1926 by Gary’s grandfather, Hugo Carlson, who was joined in business by Gary’s father Wayne in 1952. The dealership closed due to health issues in 1972. Gary Carlson, owner of Carlson Auto Body, is proud to continue this successful legacy and continued investment here in Ottawa for the last 41 years. Gary opened his business Carlson Auto Body in 1978 in the original Carlson Motor Sales buildings on the south side of Main Street. He and his wife, Diana, purchased two more buildings on the north side of the street in 1989 to expand the business into what it is today. He prides himself on treating his customers the way his family before him treated theirs. Carlson’s is a direct repair shop for five insurance companies. Claimants insured by those compa-

Service part of family tradition at Rashid’s

Rashid’s Men’s Wear in Streator was established in 1902 by brothers Frank and James Rashid. In 1929, because of the depression, Frank and his family moved to Detroit while James and his family (wife Wadelia, children Evelyn, Madeline, Victor and Katherine) remained in Streator. In 1945, James passed away and in 1970, Wadelia died. During these years, Victor opened Varsity Sports in 1954, located near Streator Township High School and through the years it has had different locations. However, today they remain located at Rashid’s Men’s Wear. Victor, Madeline, Katherine and Evelyn operated both businesses as a family until Victor’s death in 1996 and Madeline’s passing in 2006. Both Katherine and Evelyn died in 2011. Today, Rashid’s Men’s Wear and Varsity Sports is operated by the next generation of the same family that started the business more than 100 years ago. Rashid’s Men’s Wear carries suits and sport coats by S. Cohen and Hardwick, including slim fit, as well as other quality brands such as Pendleton, Haggar, Kenneth Cole slacks, Van Heusen/ Geoffrey Beene and Eagle shirts, Tosani sweaters, Florsheim, Kenneth Cole ties, Levi’s, Horn Legend, Jerry Garcia ties, Gold Toe, USA Palm shirts and Columbia golf shirts. Rashid’s also rents and sells tuxedos. Lee: Likes to channel frustration Ottawa Office Supply features large selection of business supplies into positive energy From page D1

Along with her interest in travel, Devin plays left fullback on the Streator High varsity soccer team. She’s been on the team since freshman year. She likes the new challenges each game brings and working with multiple people toward a simiilar goal. “You never face the same people twice,” Devin said, noting she would like to try out for the Naval Academy team. “I like the contact, and figuring out what you want to do and how to do it.” She didn’t have to look back too far to find a recent challenge DEVIN LEE on the field. Her team fell behind 1-0 in a recent game against Mendota, grabbed a lead, then squandered it to make it a 4-4 tie. After the roller coaster of emotions, the Bulldogs prevailed. “I like when you can take that frustration and channel it into positive energy,” she said. Off the field, Devin is a member of National Honor Society. She’s tried both the art club and writing club at SHS, before having to give them up to take a job at Big R. Art was more of an experiment for her, because she likes to doodle, but she really enjoys writing fantasies. Although she hasn’t done any travel writing, a lot of the ideas in her fantasy works are inspired by her travels. “I like writing, it’s a nice way to be creative and let my mind wander,” she said. Feyerer has known Devin for three years and says it
