Los Angeles Dodgers host division rivals San Diego Padres

The 2024 Major League Baseball season is in full swing as the star-studded Los Angeles Dodgers host the new-look San Diego Padres Sunday, April 14, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. As both teams get set to wrap up their first regular season series matchup, all the action broadcasts live on ESPN.

In what has already been a thrilling start to the season, the Dodgers are hoping to continue their dominance going into this year after coming off their fourth consecutive 100-win full season, becoming the first MLB team in history to accomplish the feat.

Playing for a team that already has the post-season in mind, Los Angeles superstar Mookie Betts is coming off one of the best seasons of his career in 2023, hitting a career-high 39 home runs. He led the league in leadoff homers with 12 and finished second in voting for the National League Most Valuable Player, while missing only 10 games and earning his seventh MLB all-star selection.

Meanwhile, the Padres are hoping to build up some momentum after last season, which saw the team miss the playoffs and part ways with superstar outfielder Juan Soto and Cy Young winner Blake Snell on the heels of an underwhelming year.

‘Sympathy’ for the novel: Oh, Downey Jr. star in Thanh Nguyen novel-turned-series

When a person immigrates to the United States of America, they come with their own set of experiences, for better or — as in the case of HBO’s newest series — for worse. The new seven-episode limited series “The Sympathizer” begins Sunday, April 14, on HBO and HBO’s streaming service, Max.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Vietnamese-American professor and author Viet Thanh Nguyen, “The Sympathizer” follows a young, French-Vietnamese man (played by Hoa Xuande, “Cowboy Bebop”), who had been placed in South Vietnam for the duration of the Vietnam War, working as a plant.

As the war approaches its end in the mid-1970s, the man (hereafter referred to as “the Captain”) lands in the United States and begins to live his life as a refugee in Los Angeles. Little do those around him know, the Captain has been tasked with gaining information on the U.S. government and reporting his findings back home to the Communist-propelled Viet Cong.

“I am a spy, a sleeper, a spook, a man of two faces,” says the Captain (also the narrator) at the outset of the 2015 novel and series’ source material. “Perhaps not surprisingly, I am also a man of two minds, ... able to see any issue from both sides. Sometimes I flatter myself that this is a talent ... [but] I wonder if what I have should even be called talent. After all, a talent is something you use, not something that uses you. The talent you cannot not use, the talent that possesses you — that is a hazard.”

As illustrated by the main character in the very first lines of Nguyen’s bestselling novel, duality is at the heart of “The Sympathizer.” Whether tackling the intricate moral quandaries that separate right from wrong, the complex and imperfect biases of political lefts and rights, or struggling with one’s own parentage (as is, for the Captain, a hated French father and an adored Vietnamese mother), “The Sympathizer” always straddles the line between, at least, two possible outcomes.

But if all this talk of dichotomy has you seeing double, don’t fret. You may just be seeing the same thing — or person, as the case would have it — twice. In fact, Marvel Cinematic Universe star Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” 2008) plays not just two roles, but four — so you could be seeing double twice!

Downey Jr., who is recognizable in at least one of his four roles, often stars in heavy prosthetics and costuming alongside up-and-comer Xuande, whose credits to date included mostly Vietnamese film and TV content until his 2021 stint as Lin in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of “Cowboy Bebop.” While very little is shared about any of Downey Jr.’s characters, a quick look at the official teasers reveals that he is largely involved in nearly every step of the well-crafted plot.

Q: Someone told me that Ryan Gosling was a child star on television. Is that true?

A: It is, though he ultimately limited his homescreen career so that he would be considered for dramatic roles in movies, which he feared his TV fame was interfering with. He tried out for a mid1990s version of “The Mickey Mouse Club” and landed the job, being cast along with Justin Timberlake (who reportedly became a good friend of his at the time), Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. He relocated from his native Canada to Orlando, Fla., for that two-year gig.

After that ended, Gosling went back to Canada and found work on such shows as “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” and “Goosebumps,” and he had a leading role in the comedy-drama series “Breaker High.” He then went to New Zealand for the title part in the show “Young Hercules,” which was the project that made him decide to pursue a different direction with his career, largely since he wanted to play a variety of roles.

Gosling’s agent parted ways with him, but the actor still secured parts in such movies as “Remember the Titans” (2000), “The Believer” (2001), “Murder by Numbers” (2002) and “The United States of Leland” (2003). He really cemented his place as a film star with the 2004 hit “The Notebook,” which teamed him with Rachel McAdams (with whom he had a personal relationship after the filming). After that, Gosling continued to focus on feature films almost exclusively. Somewhat ironically, his next one is a reboot of a TV series, “The Fall Guy”; it’s slated to be in theaters in early May.

Q: Was that Nestor Carbonell I saw on “Shogun”? I haven’t seen him since “Lost.” What else has he been doing?

A: It’s hard to believe that “Lost” ended 14 years ago — hard because people still talk about it, and because Nestor Carbonell, like his “Lost” character, doesn’t seem to age.

Carbonell played Richard Alpert on “Lost” — a mysterious figure who first appears in flashbacks but is later revealed to be one of the people who were already living on the supposedly deserted island. He’s also revealed to be immortal — a fact which, by the time he was introduced in the third season, wasn’t all that outlandish by the show’s standards.

In real life, Carbonell is, in fact, a real human being who just happens to look 40 forev-

er. That’s helped him establish himself as a serious TV supporting man, often playing serious professionals reacting to the heightened circumstances around them.

While you did, in fact, see him in FX’s “Shogun,” his first post”Lost” show was a bit of a flop. “Ringer” got just one season on The CW, from 2011 to 2012 (so, just a year after “Lost” ended), with Carbonell playing an uptight FBI agent assigned to protect the show’s protagonist (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, also seeking a career-defining role post-”Buffy the Vampire Slayer”).

But Carbonell’s biggest role was probably the one that came a couple of years later, playing another lawman, Sheriff Alex Romero on A&E’s “Bates Motel.” This prequel to the 1960 slasher classic “Psycho” reunited

Carbonell with “Lost” co-creator Carlton Cuse.

Since then Carbonell has been blending guest arcs with a turn to directing (he helmed an episode of “Law & Order” last year, 32 years after doing a bit part on the show’s second season).

That brings us to now when, as you say, he just appeared in a few episodes of the mega-budget FX miniseries “Shogun.” At the same time, he also has a supporting role in the Apple TV+ series “The Morning Show.”

In the meantime, he also keeps up a busy sideline as an indie-film supporting star. He has two new movies now in post-production, though neither one — the dystopian drama “Motherland” or the romantic thriller “The Image of You” — has a release date yet.

Q: Is Will Arnett going to make more “Murderville”?

A: Unfortunately it’s impossible to say at the moment, and maybe it always will be. The improvised sitcom “Murderville” launched its first and only season on Netflix in February 2022, starring Will Arnett (“Arrested Development”) and a rotation of guest stars. It seemed like that one season would be the end of it until November of that year, when a surprise Christmas special was announced, just a few weeks ahead of its release.

We’re now more than a year past that, and Netflix has said nothing about another season or more specials.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s canceled, especially given a) the surprise nature of the first special, b) the fact that Netflix often lets years often go by between seasons, and c) the fact that the show barely has a premise beyond Arnett hanging out with his friends for half an hour.

With all that in mind, a new season could come at just about any time, and maybe with little notice.

Married at First Sight LIFE 7 p.m.

First, the couples from Season 17 reunite in a Denver-based reunion, unpacking over 20 episodes of relationship drama, from highs to lows and “I dos” to “I don’ts.” Afterwards, a retrospective episode airs, delving into some spectacular moments.

Murder and mayhem: Obsession leads to devastation in chilling docuseries

A gripping, modern-day cautionary tale that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, this 3-part docuseries chronicles one man’s descent into chaos — all for the sake of love. “CTRL+ALT+DESIRE” premieres

Tuesday, April 16, on Paramount+.

Marking Colin Archdeacon’s (“Missing: Dead or Alive?”) directorial debut, this dedicated filmmaker aimed to expose a “chilling tale of addiction, deceit and online obsession” (per Paramount), as he documented the relentless, years-long investigation into the case of 29-year old Grant Amato, a Floridian man accused of murdering his own family in 2019 — his mother, father and brother included.

“Highly educated and charismatic, Amato didn’t fit the typical profile of a federal inmate,” explains a network press release, “but a series of professional missteps steered him down a rabbit hole of depression, isolation and financial ruin,” as Amato found himself entranced by the siren call of livestream cam models. Through his fanatic online searching and streaming, Amato discovered (and became infatuated with) a Bulgarian cam girl named Silvie.

Paramount’s description continues: “In

a desperate bid to hold Silvie’s attention, Amato reinvented himself online, crafting a confident ‘big spender’ alter ego by stealing $200,000 from his family in the months leading up to the murders. But when his fixation with Silvie grew, his alternate reality spiraled.”

Utilizing years of prison phone calls, footage recorded on a contraband cell phone, and clues that have been scattered across the globe, taking Archdeacon from the United States to Eastern Europe, the documentary unravels Amato’s descent into a compulsive, all-consuming and ultimately fatal obsession, uncovering a story that is far more complicated than initially expected.
