“Snowpiercer” - Season 4 (AMC/AMC+ — July 21, Season Premiere)

Moving to AMC and AMC+ from TNT for its fourth and final season, this series, set in a near future where the earth has become an uninhabitable, frozen tundra, follows the inhabitants of a luxury train populated with the

world’s only remaining humans as it circles the globe. It explores the revolution that takes place when the classes clash on the train, as after several years onboard the never-ending rail journey, the lowest-class “Talies” revolt against their living conditions and the train’s strict class divisions.

2024 MLB All-Star Preview: Bryce Harper shining bright this season

Get ready, baseball fans. The Midsummer Classic returns as the 2024 Major League Baseball All-Star Game gets set to light up the diamond Tuesday, July 16, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. All the action broadcasts live on Fox.

In what’s been another action-filled and entertaining season of baseball, this year’s All-Star Game continues to showcase MLB’s top-tier talent, with many fans eagerly keeping their eyes out for the Philadelphia Phillies’ bonafide superstar, Bryce Harper. Harper is leading the National League in all-star votes for first baseman, who, on the heels of a standout season, has also caught the attention of not only fans, but all of Major League Baseball.

The “Chosen One” has been a force to be reckoned with this season, including winning National League Player of the Month in May, boasting a .407 on-base percentage and a .583 slugging percentage, for a league-leading OPS (.990).

Since winning Player of the Month, Harper’s exceptional play has only continued to thrive, maintaining an impressive .282 batting average, .391 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .539.

Transitioning to the full-time role of first baseman for the first time, the Las Vegas native has played a major role in solidifying the Phillies’ strong performance this season both offensively and defensively, with the Phillies firmly holding a top-five spot in MLB while also leading the National League East Division.

With the All-Star Game fast approaching, Harper’s performance this season has undoubtedly made him one of the favorites going into the game as fans hope his regular-season success carries over, showcasing why he remains one of baseball’s brightest stars.

Rolling up the mats: ‘Cobra Kai’ dojo prepares to close doors after Season 6

After five complete seasons — across two different platforms — “Cobra Kai” may know better than most series what it takes to survive in the business. Back in the dojo to begin its sixth and final season, the Karate Kid franchise spinoff series has big plans for the year ahead. It all begins Thursday, July 18, on Netflix.

“Cobra Kai,” the karate-centric dramedy series from creators Jon Hurwitz (“Obliterated”), Josh Heald (“Hot Tub Time Machine,” 2010) and Hayden Schlossberg (“Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle,” 2004), had audiences and “The Karate Kid” (1984) fans gripped from its very first episode back in May 2018. At that time, the budding series was an original YouTube Red (now YouTube Premium) production, but in 2020, when YouTube opted to sweep the leg on the series, Netflix picked it up and kept the action rolling just as it had previously done with shows such as “Arrested Development,” “Lucifer” and “Manifest.”

An expansion of what fans of the franchise are now calling the Miyagiverse — thanks to the late Pat Morita’s (“Mulan,” 1998) classic role as Mr. Miyagi in the original Karate Kid film franchise — “Cobra Kai” follows the 1984 film’s lead protagonist and antagonist, Daniel “Daniel-san” LaRusso (Ralph Macchio, “My Cousin Vinny,” 1992) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka, “How I Met You Mother”), now grown up and reuniting their spirited feud thanks to their ties to opposing dojos in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley.

Despite the series having been pretty high-octane until the surprisingly tame Season 5 finale, the cast and crew wish for fans of the show to note that there is a lot planned for the coming sixth season.

“With Cobra Kai eliminated from the Valley,” reads the official Netflix description, “our senseis and students must decide if and how they will compete in the Sekai Taikai — the world championships of karate.”

While many of the actors have remained tight-lipped about the details of Season 6, others, like Gianni DeCenzo (“Coop and Cami Ask the World”), who plays Demetri Alexopoulos, have been more open to sharing their thoughts and feelings during interviews — even if sometimes the answer is unexpected. For example, when What’s On Netflix reporter Jacob Robinson asked what’s in store for Demetri in Season 6, DeCenzo replied: “He slips and falls and dies.”

“No ...” DeCenzo soon clarified, “He’s become better at karate. He got a super hot, super popular girlfriend. Things have been going great for him. He ended up in the semifinals of the All-Valley tournament, which was his first tournament ever, and it was terrific. So yeah, I want to see him grow even more in Season 6. And yeah, I can’t give out any spoilers, but it will be a great season.”

“Cobra Kai” also stars Martin Kove (“The Karate Kid,” 1984), Xolo Mariduena (“Blue Beetle,” 2023), Jacob Bertrand (“Ready Player One,” 2018), Mary Mouser (“Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” 2014), Peyton List (“Bunk’d”), Courtney Henggeler (“Mom”), Tanner Buchanan (“Designated Survivor”), Vanessa Rubio (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”), Dallas Dupree Young (“The Big Show Show”), Yuji Okumoto (“The Karate Kid Part II,” 1986), Alicia Hannah-Kim (“Minx”), Griffin Santopietro (“The Week Of,” 2018) and Oona O’Brien (“Sky High,” 2020).

Griffith OF MATLOCK ON METV

Q: I see that a new version of “Matlock” is coming, but I still enjoy watching the original series with Andy Griffith. When did that start, and how long did it run?

A: The show’s history began with a 1986 NBC movie titled “Diary of a Perfect Murder,” with folksy lawyer Ben Matlock and his daughter Charlene (then played by Lori Lethin) handling the defense for a television reporter suspected of killing his ex-wife. The film’s ratings were good enough for the network to order a weekly series, and “Matlock” premiered that fall, though Linda Purl assumed the role of Charlene for that version … but only for the first season.

Interestingly, a two-part “Matlock” episode from its first NBC year served as the basis for “Jake and the Fatman,” the William Conrad-Joe Penny show that aired on CBS.

Though its ratings lessened from year to year, “Matlock” remained a staple of the NBC lineup for five more seasons. With Purl’s exit, explained by Charlene’s departure to start her own firm, Nancy Stafford (who had appeared in a first-year episode in a different rolle) was cast as the elder Matlock’s new law partner Michelle Thomas. Griffith’s former sitcom co-star Don Knotts became a notable recurring guest as Matlock’s neighbor.

When NBC elected to cancel “Matlock” in 1992, ABC stepped in and picked up the show, ultimately giving it three more seasons. Stafford left the cast and was replaced by Brynn Thayer, who — like Stafford — had appeared on the series earlier. Also joining for the ABC run was Daniel Roebuck as a novice attorney, and he stayed for the remainder of the show, though Thayer was succeeded in the final year by Carol Huston as another of Matlock’s associates.

Mike Colter

Q: What is the guy who played Luke Cage doing now? I’ve given up on that show coming back.

A: Mike Colter has moved on to another full-time TV gig, while also keeping up a burgeoning film career. In short, he’s keeping busy.

He jumped straight into another TV hit after “Luke Cage,” in fact. Since 2019, less than a year after the Netflix comic book series ended, he’s been starring in the Paramount+ supernatural drama “Evil,” which is currently in its fourth and final season.

And at the same time, he’s starred in a succession of mid-budget action and drama films, such as the 2022 biographical drama “I’m Charlie Walker” (playing the title role) and, oddly, the 2022 Korean-language actioner “Carter.”

One of those movies stands out, though, for really over-delivering on its budget. “Plane” (2023), starring Colter and Gerard Butler (“300,” 2006), seemed like a pretty generic popcorn flick, but it was a surprise box-office smash. And so, they’re now doing preliminary work on a sequel.

All that is to say, Colter’s in demand.

“Angels in the Out eld” (July 15) Foster kid Roger (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) loves the Anaheim Angels, even though they’re the worst team in the major leagues. His estranged dad promises to reunite the family if the Angels make it to the World Series, so Roger decides to ask for some divine help and prays that his favorite team will turn things around. Soon, a real angel named Al (Christopher Lloyd) shows up in response to Roger’s prayers, and Anaheim’s hopeless coach (Danny Glover) is shocked to see his team on a winning streak.

OF LUKE CAGE ON NETFLIX

But, I should also point out that not all hope is lost for a return of Luke Cage. The show was part of a separate, Netflix-based wing of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, along with “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist” and “The Defenders.” That whole set of shows seemed dead, but recently Marvel announced it would be making a new “Daredevil” series (aptly subtitled “Born Again”) for Disney+, with several of the actors from the Netflix shows coming back to their roles. Colter hasn’t been listed among them so far, but he said in an interview with ComicBook.com that he would be “open” to returning if they invited him.

Q: Are they going to do another “Book Club” movie?

A: Erin Simms and Bill Holderman, the real-life couple behind one of modern cinema’s great underdog stories, are certainly open to the idea of a third movie in their Book Club series.

However, there’s nothing planned yet. And the second film, “Book Club: The Next Chapter,” was only a modest hit — nothing like the runaway success of the original — so a third might be a tougher sell.

Simms and Holderman wrote 2018’s “Book Club” together and later produced it together, with Holderman directing. Because they produced it themselves, it had a very limited budget, despite featuring four incredibly famous leads: Diane Keaton (“Annie Hall,” 1977), Jane Fonda (“Klute,” 1971), Candice Bergen (“Murphy Brown”) and Mary Steenburgen (“Melvin and Howard,” 1980).

The sense was that everyone was involved because they believed in the story, about four older women in a book club together who seek to reignite their romantic lives.

That belief was rewarded, in the form of a 10-fold return on the film’s budget. It was the industry story of the year.

A sequel seemed like a no-brainer, but it wasn’t Simms’ or Holderman’s brains that came up with it. The concept of taking the four characters to Italy for “The Next Chapter” actually came from the stars themselves.

Holderman, in an interview with Oscars.org, said the four were on a flight to Las Vegas to promote the film when they called him and said, “There needs to be a sequel and it needs to be in Italy.”

And so he joked that, if a sequel does happen, he and Simms will have to wait for the ladies to get on another plane to Vegas to find out where they’re going next.

If you’ve got acrophobia (a fear of heights), this one’s not for you. Equal parts thrilling and romantic, “Skywalkers: A Love Story” premieres Friday, July 19, on Netflix.

From acclaimed co-directors Jeff Zimbalist (“Super League: The War for Football”) and Maria Bukhonina (“Why We Fight”), this documentary goes sky high, following a gravity-defying couple as they “take their relationship to terrifying new heights in a wild scheme to climb one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers” (per Netflix) — Malaysia’s impressively massive Merdeka 118, measuring in at 679 meters high (or 2,227 feet).

Who is the daredevil couple in question? “If you’ve never used the word rooftop as a verb,” Netflix explains, it’s likely that you’ve not been following Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, a pair of Moscow daredevils who’ve made a career out of scaling some of the world’s tallest buildings. Their climbs are often technically considered trespassing — and completed with minimal or nonexistent safety precautions in place. But Nikolau and Beerkus aren’t just climbing buddies — they’re also in love.”

The documentary itself chronicles the couple as they prepare for their most challenging climb yet, scaling all 118 stories of the aforementioned Merdeka, including its 160-meter (524 foot) spire. With over 200 hours of footage — shot across seven years and six countries, featuring many of the couple’s most intense climbs — the film acts as an intimate portrait of trust and teamwork, according to the streamer, who then says: “At other times, it’s a tense, cover-your-eyes thriller that leaves you guessing how a relationship survives this kind of pressure.”

“There’s a danger to romance,” Zimbalist told Netflix’s Queue. “It crushes us. It breaks our hearts. It breaks our hopes. Here, that danger is material. If the love falls apart, if the trust falls apart, it’s life or death. That felt like such a potent way of taking this amorphous sense that we all have in our romance and externalizing it and making it tangible.”

Produced by Nick Spicer (“Seven Veils,” 2023) and Tamir Ardon (“BlackBerry,” 2023) for XYZ Films and Chris Smith (“Tiger King”) for Library Films, “Skywalkers: A Love Story” makes its debut this Friday, July 19, only on Netflix.
