Ferrari and Leclerc look to keep consistency going in Italy

It’s another exciting weekend for Formula One fans as the Italian Grand Prix kicks into gear Sept. 1-3, at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy. Practices, qualifying runs and race-day coverage air live on ESPN.

As the Formula One season travels to Italy, naturally, Charles Leclerc and Team Scuderia Ferrari quickly come to mind. Looking to avoid reliving subpar performances from last season, this year Ferrari has remained in the hunt for a World Championship, in large part thanks to Leclerc.

Prior to the summer break, the Monégasque driveronly had two retirements with a couple of minor accidents in Baku and Miami during qualifying, including two podium appearances in four races. And while teammate Carlos Sainz has performed well himself, Leclerc remains Ferrari’s most reliable driver to get the job done, beating Sainz 8-4 in qualifiers and losing to him three times while beating him six times in races.

As points become tougher to attain, individual and overall team performances are paramount down the stretch, and for Leclerc and Ferrari to remain in the hunt, they’ll need to get past Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez seemingly running away with the World Championship.

Going into this weekend, Leclerc has gone over 12 months without a Formula One victory. Look for Leclerc and Team Ferrari to put together a good strategy and avoid taking any further steps back on the grid.

In the mood for mystery: Detective dramas return with back-to-back premieres

Some of television’s favorite detectives are hot on the trail of chilling cases across Europe as PBS welcomes back two crime dramas for season premieres on this side of the pond. “Unforgotten” and “Van der Valk” debut back-to-back season premieres on Sunday, Sept. 3.

“Van der Valk” premieres the first installment of its three-episode third season following the titular cynic detective Piet Van der Valk (Marc Warren, “Flack”) as he combs through the criminal underbelly of idyllic Amsterdam to solve the city’s murders. A reboot of the 1972-1992 series of the same name starring Barry Foster (“Maurice,” 1987), both series are inspired by the “Van der Valk” detective novels by author Nicolas Freeling. The character’s stories have been adapted not just for TV but for radio and film as well.

In the season premiere of “Van der Valk,” the detective chases leads in the murder of a prominent freerunner. Connections in the case to Amsterdam’s drug scene send Van der Valk on a mission that puts his street smarts to the test. Maimie McCoy (“All Creatures Great and Small”) stars as Insp. Lucienne Hassell, with new additions this season, Django Chan-Reeves (“Industry”) as Sgt. Citra Li and Azan Ahmed (“Mood”)

as Sgt. Eddie Suleman. Emma Fielding (“Sanditon”) returns as Van der Valk’s boss, commissioner Julia Dahlman, and Darrell D’Silva (“Domina”) is back this season as forensic pathologist Hendrik Davie. London-set drama “Unforgotten” stars Sanjeev Bhaskar (“Yesterday,” 2019) as DCI Sunil “Sunny” Khan and new addition Sinéad Keenan (“Showtrial”) as DCI Jessica James in its fifth season of cold case deep dives. Each six-episode season centers on one decades-old case reinvigorated by newly discovered evidence.

The much-anticipated upcoming season of “Unforgotten” kicks off with a puzzling first case for the newest member of the cold case unit. A bit stiff and overly professional in her new role, DCI James is sent to Hammersmith, London, to investigate the discovery of remains that could possibly date back as far as the 1930s.

Uncovered during restoration work, it is not immediately clear which of the antiques in the historical home could be contemporaneous to the remains. The team must quickly figure out how to work together if they are going to construct a timeline that could very well span a century.

Returning this season are Carolina Main (“Foundation”) as DC Fran Lingley, Jordan Long (“Prime Suspect: Tennison”) as DS Murray Boulting, Pippa Nixon (“Angela Black”) as DC Karen Willetts, Georgia Mackenzie (“Casualty”) as pathologist Dr. Leanne Balcombe and Michelle Bonnard (“Blindspot”) as Sally Field, Sunny’s partner. Fair warning that spoilers lie ahead that reveal the events of the fourth season of “Unforgotten.” If you are caught up on the show, then you already know who is missing from cast members returning for the new season. “Unforgotten” said goodbye last season to the beloved DCI Cassie Stuart, portrayed by “Annika” star Nicola Walker.

Q: Now that “The Company You Keep” is over, what’s next for Milo Ventimiglia?

A: That remains to be seen. The actor put a lot into that ABC series, since his production company was heavily involved in it, in addition to his being the show’s star. It also came pretty much on the heels of the end of his run on NBC’s “This Is Us,” so he had been busy for quite some time.

The much-acclaimed family drama, on which Ventimiglia played Jack Pearson, followed a string of other regular roles for him on series (“Mob City,” “Chosen,” “The Whispers”) … so if he should take a break from weekly television work for a while, it’s understandable. It’s also mandated, at least for the time being, given the work stoppage that has been prompted by the actors’ and writers’ strikes.

Other shows on which Ventimiglia has appeared have included “Gilmore Girls,” “American Dreams,” “The Bedford Diaries” and “Heroes.” He’s also not opposed to guest shots, as he proved on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as it was nearing its finale.

Even if TV isn’t the route Ventimiglia takes when show business gets back to business, he’s done a sufficient amount of movie work that might inspire him to go down that path again instead. “The Art of Racing in the Rain” and “Second Act” are among his more recent films, as is “Creed II,” in which he reprised the role of Rocky Balboa Jr. that he first played in (aptly enough) “Rocky Balboa.” The relationship he developed with Sylvester Stallone on the latter picture led to Stallone’s guest stint on “This Is Us.”

Q: What has Shawn Ashmore been doing since the X-Men movies?

I thought he was on the cusp of movie stardom, but haven’t seen him much since.

A: That’s because you’re looking for movies.

After making a name for himself as Bobby Drake (also known as Iceman) in the 2000s X-Men movies, Canadian actor Shawn Ashmore pivoted to TV. And he’s been doing pretty well for himself.

He actually started the shift before he was even done with the Iceman role. When his final X-Men movie, “Days of Future Past,” was released in 2014, Ashmore was already starring on a high-profile TV series, Fox’s “The Following.”

When that ended in 2015, he wasted little time jump -

ing to another network drama, ABC’s “Conviction.”

That only lasted a season, though, which freed him up to join his biggest series yet, ABC’s smash-hit cop drama, “The Rookie.” He’s been playing attorney Wesley Evers on the show since its launch in 2018, also appearing in a crossover episode of its spinoff, “The Rookie: Feds.”

Ashmore’s still dabbling in movies — mostly low-budget indie dramas and thrillers such as 2020’s “Darkness Falls” — but it’s clear that his focus is on TV. Between the starring roles I listed, he’s shown up on other big shows, such as Prime’s “The Boys” and CBS’s “S.W.A.T.,” and starred in Microsoft’s experimental half-show halfgame, “Quantum Break.”

Q: Is Guy Ritchie ever going to make the “RocknRolla” sequel he promised?

A: English action-movie auteur Guy Ritchie has a lot of movies in the pipeline, but “The Real RocknRolla” isn’t one of them.

Fans like yourself remember that, at the end of the 2008 action-comedy “RocknRolla,” a title card said that “Johnny, Archy and the Wild Bunch will be back in The Real RocknRolla.” But 15 years have passed and we’re still waiting.

It looks like the film’s somewhat disappointing box office return killed the idea of a sequel. This has happened with a couple of Ritchie’s other flops that were intended to launch franchises: “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” (2015) and “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” (2017).

But it could also have to do with the fact that he’s become pretty busy with more guaranteed hits in the years since. His first film after “RocknRolla” was 2009’s “Sherlock Holmes,” the mega-smash that got an immediate sequel two years later.

He also directed Disney’s live-action remake of “Aladdin” in 2019, a film that broke the billion-dollar mark (making “RocknRolla’s” $25 million look paltry). A sequel to “Aladdin” is one of the projects currently on his backburner.

He also has a TV adaptation of his 2019 hit “The Gentlemen,” and a war drama called “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” both in various stages of production and due out in the next two years.

Go forward ... Fabulously: Whitney finds joy amidst big life changes in Season 11

The ever-fabulous Whitney Way Thore, 39, returns for the 11th year of “My Big Fat Fabulous Life” – this time, however, it’s life like never before, as Whitney must adjust to a difficult new reality in this upcoming season, premiering Tuesday, Sept. 5, on TLC.

While the reality star’s bright and positive personality shines through each episode, Season 11 begins with a shock for Thore, who is seen in a recent trailer for the season reuniting with her family after the devastating loss of her mother – Barbara “Babs” Thore – who tragically died in December 2022 after battling cerebral amyloid angiopathy. Babs was 76 years old.

At the time, Thore shared information regarding her mother’s death on Instagram, describing the disease as “an untreatable progressive condition caused by proteins in the blood vessels of the brain that can cause dementia, seizures, or like in my mom’s case, brain bleeding (hemorrhagic strokes).”

The unexpected loss took a toll on all, as during the trailer, Whitney can be seen interacting with her father, Glenn, who is struggling to cope with the loss of his wife.

“When I stand around this kitchen table,

it just brings back all these memories with your mom,” he says.

Later on, Whitney confides in her brother Hunter, sharing her concerns. “He’s just lost,” Whitney explains. “He said: ‘I don’t wanna do anything without your mother.’” Hunter goes on to reply: “We just have to change that attitude.”

And so begins a season of change, exploration and adventure for the Thores, who together embark on a bucket list of activities meant to invigorate, recharge and challenge any limiting beliefs they held for themselves in this new chapter of life. Throughout the trailer, the audience is allowed a glimpse at what’s to come, joining Whitney, Hunter and Glenn as they tackle everything from tattoos to indoor skydiving, to reaching new heights while spotting glaciers in Switzerland.
