Real Madrid takes on newly promoted Espanyol in La Liga matchup

La Liga action returns this weekend with fans packing the historic Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid as Real Madrid gets set to take on Espanyol in a regular season fixture. The match kicks off Sunday, Sept. 22, live on ESPN.

The 2024-25 season is in full swing, as Real Madrid enters the year on fire. Its squad up front is bolstered by the newest addition for Los Blancos, Kylian Mbappe, who is already making an impact after scoring his first goal for Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup final, where it defeated Atalanta 2-0.

Despite not having found the back of the net this season, Brazilian phenom Vinicius Junior remains one of Real Madrid’s most pivotal players to don the white and gold, scoring 15 goals and adding five assists last season in another impressive campaign. With added expectations entering this season, Vinicius remains focused on winning the club’s league trophy and 16th Champions League title — though many fans are hoping the team can pull off its first-ever treble.

In an exclusive interview with CNN, Vinicius Junior explains how he’s set his sights on greater things for Madrid this season: “The Champions League comes first, which is the most difficult competition — followed by La Liga and then the Copa. ... The Champions League [is] where Real Madrid always wants to win. And not only the players, the fans demand that of us, to win that competition, but our goal now is to try and win everything we enter and finally be able to win the treble.”

Meanwhile, visiting opponent Espanyol is enjoying its first full season back in the Spanish top flight after spending all of last season in the Segunda division with the Catalan side defeating Real Oviedo 2-0 in their promotion playoff final.

Life preserver: ‘Doctor Odyssey’ saves souls on the high seas

A dreamboat is in the lifeboat on his way to save lives in the brand-new medical drama “Doctor Odyssey,” premiering Thursday, Sept. 26, on ABC. Starring Joshua Jackson (“Fatal Attraction”) as Dr. Max Bankman, the series follows the crew and passengers of a luxury cruise ship called The Odyssey as they indulge in pleasures onboard while managing unexpected medical emergencies.

Leading the ship’s voyage through the open ocean is Capt. Robert Massey, portrayed by legendary TV procedural actor Don Johnson, star of “Miami Vice” and “Nash Bridges.” Having notably been the bad guy in two recent films — the 2024 Netflix crime drama “Rebel Ridge” and the 2019 whodunit hit “Knives Out” — “Doctor Odyssey” is a return to charming form for Johnson.

Also starring in the upcoming series are Phillipa Soo (“Shining Girls”) as nurse Avery Morgan and Sean Teale (“The Gifted”) as nurse Tristan Silva, members of Dr. Bankman’s medical team onboard the ship. And the three of them aren’t just co-workers. With lots of downtime between emergencies, the three medical professionals have become quite close. If the teaser trailer is to be believed, there is a bit of a love triangle going on outside the ship’s OR.

“Doctor Odyssey” is written, co-created and executive produced by prolific TV storyteller Ryan Murphy, whose other fall debut series this year include the horror series

“Grotesquerie” and the true crime drama “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” on FX, not to mention several continuing series across other networks and streamers.

Like most of Murphy’s work, major plot and character details are being kept under wraps until the series premiere, but one exciting cameo was revealed in an official trailer for “Doctor Odyssey” released in August.

Canadian country superstar Shania Twain (“That Don’t Impress Me Much”) appears in a yet-to-be-confirmed role, though we do know she hits the dance floor with the captain during a black tie event on the ship.

From the synopsis to the trailer, it is clear that “Doctor Odyssey” has that signature Murphy procedural sheen. Like his previous series, the premise may seem outlandish — how many kinds of emergencies can possibly be called in to “9-1-1” — only for all of the pieces to fit perfectly together to make an endlessly entertaining watch that supports equally-successful spinoff series.

At the ABC Upfronts in May, before the series had even begun filming, series star Jackson spoke with TVLine about what the vision was for “Doctor Odyssey,” saying, “the word that [Murphy] first used with me is ‘sparkle,’ that everything should have a sparkle in your eye.” From the spotless ship to its beautiful passengers and professional crew, it all glimmers on The Odyssey.

Jackson also spoke to Deadline at Upfronts about what he could share pre-production, having got his hands on the scripts.

“Ryan Murphy doesn’t write normal procedural television, so the world that this doctor lives in is going to be as over the top and outrageous as you would expect.”

Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken, who both recently collaborated with Murphy on the Emmy-nominated second season of “Feud,” co-created and executive produce “Doctor Odyssey” with Murphy, while frequent Murphy collaborator Paris Barclay (“Sons of Anarchy”) directs the series.

Carrie Preston OF ELSBETH ON CBS/PARAMOUNT+

Q:

A: Carrie Preston first stepped into “The Good Wife” in 2010, toward the end of the first season of that CBS show. Quirky attorney Elsbeth Tascioni hadn’t been conceived to be a recurring character, but Preston – who had a good amount of television work under her belt by that time, encompassing “True Blood,” “Sex and the City” and shows in the “Law & Order” franchise – quickly made her mark in the role, eventually winning a Primetime Emmy Award as a guest performer for that portrayal.

When the sequel series “The Good Fight” was spun off for the then-CBS All Access (now Paramount+) from “The Good Wife” in 2017, it was a logical question whether Preston would resurface as Elsbeth. Not only did that happen in five episodes, but Preston also directed two episodes of the show. (She also directed a couple of episodes of another series on which he was a regular cast member, TNT’s “Claws.”)

Now, of course, Preston has another showcase as Elsbeth in the logically titled “Elsbeth,” set to begin its second season Oct. 17 on CBS and Paramount+. She and executive producers Robert and Michelle King have confirmed that “Columbo” was an inspiration for the current show, with Elsbeth – now relocated from Chicago to work with New York Police Department – using her unique insights and observations to get the goods on criminals, similar to the approach of Peter Falk’s Lt. Columbo.

As with “Columbo,” “Elsbeth” has been notable for its casting of guest “suspects.” Among those featured during the first season were Jane Krakowski, Blair Underwood and (in the premiere episode) Preston’s fellow “True Blood” alum Stephen Moyer.

When did Carrie Preston first appear on “The Good Wife” as the character Elsbeth?

Allison Janney

Q: I loved the sitcom “Mom” and was so sad when they canceled it. What’s Allison Janney been doing since?

A: I think it’s safe to say that fans took the cancelation of “Mom” harder than Allison Janney (of “The West Wing” fame) did. With a lengthy and decorated TV and film career behind her already, it seemed clear she would land on her feet — and she did. She’s appeared in seven different roles just since “Mom” was canceled in 2021.

This includes supporting roles in the Oscar-nominated dramas “The Creator” (2023) and “To Leslie” (2022), as well as lead roles in the feature-length Prime Video

comedy “The People We Hate at the Wedding” (2022) and the Netflix drama “Lou” (2022), which she also produced.

She also found time for a couple of one-off guest spots with the animated series “Q-Force” and the final season of the HBO smash “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

But her biggest role has been as a lead in the comedy series “Palm Royale,” about a young woman (Kristen Wiig, “Bridesmaids,” 2011) trying to break into Palm Beach’s high society at the end of the swinging 1960s. It released its first season earlier this year on Apple TV+ and has a second season lined up for next year.

OF MOM ON CBS

All this is to say, Janney clearly hasn’t been hurting for work after “Mom.”

But let’s not sell that series too short, as some kind of blip in her career. The sitcom, about a newly sober single mom (Anna Faris, “The House Bunny,” 2008) trying to pull her life together while also dealing with her own wayward mother (Janney), ran for eight seasons on CBS. Of the seven Emmys Janney has won, two were for “Mom,” while one other was earned for her guest role in “Masters of Sex” and four were for her work on the critically acclaimed political drama “The West Wing.”

celebrity update

Q: Is Adam Sandler going to do another “Murder Mystery” movie? Those were fun.

A: The perpetually busy Adam Sandler (“The Wedding Singer,” 1998) has 12 different projects at some stage of development right now. Unfortunately, none of them is “Murder Mystery 3,” though he does have ideas. “Murder Mystery” (2019) and “Murder Mystery 2” (2023) were fun, light rom-coms pairing Sandler with fellow comedic great Jennifer Aniston (“Friends”) as a bickering but loving couple repeatedly (twice, anyway) thrust into the role of sleuths solving crimes in lavish settings. The films are, essentially, comedic send-ups of Agatha Christie.

The second installment was released in the spring of 2023 on Netflix and was a huge hit, just like the first. It was the biggest film on Netflix when it was released, and with more than 42 million views in its first three days, it had the second-biggest opening weekend for a Netflix comedy film. With numbers like that, it seems like just a matter of time before a third one goes into production.

Especially since Sandler and Aniston have said that they’re game. While doing press for the second film, they both said they already had ideas for the story, including that their characters would get married in the course of events.

Sandler also said, in a red-carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight, that NBA great Shaquille O’Neal (who made his most recent television appearance in Peacock’s “Mr. Throwback”) would have to be involved — though he may have been joking about this: “If Shaq’s in it, I’m in it. I love Shaq and any time he’s near me, I’m happier.”
