Caring tradition at Solon-Telford Funeral Home

From the moment you walk through the doors at Solon-Telford Funeral Home, you feel a sense of home. The look and feel of the funeral home creates a feeling of warmth and comfort as you enter the building.

The building is the former residence and office of prominent Streator physician, Dr. M.F. Dorsey and his family. The Solon family purchased the property and after extensive renovations the residence opened as a funeral home in 1955.

Today, the business is owned and operated by Jason and Dolly Telford, who take great care in the legacy the Solon family members began over 120 years ago. Though the funeral industry has seen many changes in its history, the focus on caring, dignified assistance to their families remains at the heart of the business at Solon-Telford Funeral Home.

Serving with Jason and Dolly is Joe Rabbitt who will officially be a licensed funeral director/embalmer for 50 years this upcoming May. Also employed at the funeral home as a licensed funeral director/embalmer is Blackstone resident Darel Good. The team at Solon-Telford Funeral Home

is always there to provide support and help you create a beautiful, lasting tribute to your loved ones.

Other part-time employees of the funeral home include Pat Gibbons, a licensed funeral director, Tim Redd, Bill Lee, Jerry Ftacek, Jeff Horner

and Vickie Cantrell. “We could not offer the service that we do without the wonderful staff that we have,” Jason Telford said. “They are all incredibly valuable to us and we are very thankful to have them as part of our funeral home family.”

Vactor Manufacturing

has more than 50 distributors in more than 100 locations

For more than 100 years, Vactor Manufacturing has been building durable, reliable products using air conveyance, high-pressure water, and vacuum technology.

The business began in Chicago in 1911 as the Myers-Sherman Company, a manufacturer of pneumatic farm equipment, before moving to its current location in Streator during the 1930s.

The pneumatic conveying systems in the original products provided the impetus for today’s success as a global leader and innovator in the manufacture of Sewer Cleaners, Hydro-Excavators, and Industrial Vacuum Loaders.

Today Vactor Manufacturing is the home of three brands, Vactor, TRUVAC, and Guzzler, which represent the three markets we have

spent decades pioneering and leading. The success we have enjoyed is owed to the dedication of our employees and our extensive dealer network.

Vactor Manufacturing has more than 50 North American distributors in more than 100 locations to serve the municipal market, as well as 12 factory direct locations through FS Solutions for industrial and utility customers

in the United States.

Joe Johnson Equipment (JJE), now a subsidiary of Federal Signal Corporation, has eight locations across Canada.

“Our employees take great pride in their work.” shared Katie Muntz,Human Resources Manager. “The employee commitment to quality drives the proven reputation of Vactor products.”

Ottawa Dental Laboratory

Great Experiences… Lasting Smiles

Founded in 1937, the Ottawa Dental Laboratory has served the dental community for 86 years. This third generation, family owned and operated company has evolved with this ever-changing, dynamic industry. Luke Caruso, III, President & Chief Operating Officer claims, “We’re committed to the investment of new technology, new materials, and product development to keep us on the cutting edge in order to maintain our position in the industry and to sustain the pace of our strategic growth.”

Digital dentistry has catapulted the industry into milling and 3D printing technology. The Ottawa Dental Laboratory adopted CAD/CAM technology in the mid-90’s and remains at the forefront of the industry. Technology-driven production has increased significantly resulting in the creation of new positions and the need for expansion. In 2019, the Ottawa Dental Laboratory opened a second Ottawa facility situ-

ated at 1615 E. Norris Dr., to house their digital workflow, expand production, and support additional CAD/CAM equipment.

Over the last few years, expansion has played an important role in the success of the Ottawa Dental Laboratory. With two locations in Ottawa, others in Chicago and Bloomington, Illinois, and one in South Bend, Indiana, in 2021 they expanded their footprint in the Midwest by acquiring three laboratories in Racine, Appleton, and Greendale, Wisconsin, as well as one in Springfield, Illinois. This rapid growth allows the Ottawa Dental Laboratory to offer more jobs in these local communities. By the end of last year, the total number of employees working for the Ottawa Dental Laboratory had grown to 356 across all locations. New training and development programs, including the Delta Tau Study Club, have been integrated to make working at the Ottawa Dental Laboratory not just a job, but a career.

Expanding their team of professionals is a key component of their success.

When you feel supported by the community, it is natural to want to give back. The Ottawa Dental Laboratory and its employees are key contributors to the United Way organization and other charities. They consistently support the local community and those that are less fortunate.

The Ottawa Dental Laboratory continues to grow as its dedication and loyalty to their employees, the dental community, and the local community remains strong. Jim Caruso, President & Chief Administrative Officer states, “The key to our success in the future will be to continue embracing the foundation of why my grandfather, Tony Caruso, founded the lab in the first place: ‘to provide the finest dental prosthetics in the Midwest.’”

There are physical effects of untreated hearing loss such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. Mild hearing loss doubles your risk of experiencing dementia and moderate hearing loss triples your risk of developing dementia. Severe hearing loss increases your risk of developing de-

mentia 5 times. Patients with untreated hearing loss are also 3 times more likely to suffer from falls.

Today, we have the technology and

advancements available to effectively treat most hearing losses. No one should be suffering from hearing loss and the effects of hearing loss any longer. By treating your hearing loss, you will be improving your overall health. You will enjoy life again and your relationships with others will improve. You will have regained confidence and independence. Treating your hearing loss allows you to keep your brain stimulated and reduces your risk of developing dementia. You will have more energy at the end of the day for other things.

Seeking help for your hearing loss will be a positive experience at Wallace Center for Hearing. Beth Wallace, M.S. will guide you every step of the way from diagnosing, treating, and then continually managing and servicing your hearing loss. Treatment plans are individualized and unique to your needs. Wallace Center for Hearing specializes in assisting others to overcome their hearing loss.

Regain hearing, regain joy in life

Communication is an essential part of our lives, but when there are problems with one’s hearing, it can cause a breakdown in communication and lead to feeling isolated and hold one back in life.

Born and raised in the Illinois Valley, Dr. Kendra Theodosopoulos became an audiologist to help people maintain communication and stay active and healthy in their lives. She and the team at Theos Audiology Solutions are committed to finding hearing solutions that fit patient needs.

Theos Audiology Solutions has locations in Peru, Galesburg and now Streator. The staff includes two audiologists: Dr. Theodosopoulos

and Dr. Kristin Williford, patient care coordinators and Maricia Cocanour who is training to become a hearing instrument specialist. The doctors and patient care coordinators are there to walk with patients through their journey to regain their hearing.

Using the latest hearing testing, the team at Theos Audiology Solutions provides kind and gentle care to help patients, from schoolage children through adults, resolve their hearing problems.

Hearing problems usually start with something simple, Dr. Theodosopoulos said. It often starts with noticing a loved one is listening to the television loudly, having

trouble with conversations and it can snowball into someone pulling back from their active lifestyle. Grandparents declining a chance to see their grandchildren’s musical concert or attend a sporting event because of their hearing limitations.

“We want to help our patients bring back those activities they love and regain the joys in their life, like attending a music concert, spending time with loved ones,” Dr. Theodosopoulos said.

Technology improvements have made hearing aids sleeker, smaller and more versatile too. Many include the feature of Bluetooth capabilities, allowing a user to take phone calls, answer text messages and even

listen to music from their phone with their hearing devices.

“Just like your phone and computer have gotten smaller, so too have hearing devices,” Dr. Theodosopoulos said.

At Theos Audiology Solutions patients can count on continued care through their journey, from initial exams and a device fitting to continued follow-up and maintenance to ensure a hearing device is fitting and working to one’s hearing needs.

“We treat you like family and we want to make sure you are happy,” Dr. Theodosopoulos said.

Book your visit today and regain your hearing and your lifestyle.

Friendship House Ottawa

For 58 years Friendship House Ottawa has provided a place of joy and purpose for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“We live here, we work here, we worship here, and we have a lot of fun here,” said Executive Director Tony Barrett.

The basis for Friendship House Ottawa started with a mother in the community, Jane McCormick, who had a vision to create structured programs for her son with Down syndrome. That vision

has become Friendship House Ottawa, which supports about 100 residents including 35 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in its residential program. Friendship House Ottawa offers community integrated living arrangements, semi-independent living, vocational training, and work opportunities in the community.

“It’s a family-style atmosphere here,” Barrett said.

Each day brings new opportunities and adventures, from exploring LaSalle County’s his-

tory and nature to large events such as its annual fundraising gala or the recent opportunity for members to attend the Tim Tebow Foundation’s a Night To Shine prom where residents donned their best dresses and ties and danced till their feet were too tired.

The Friendship House Professional Work Center provides vocational training to help individuals grow their confidence and abilities, with supervision to cheer them along. Our members are valued part of the community

labor force including our partner MBL which has employed individuals from Friendship House for more than 35 years.

Daily activities at Friendship House include music therapy, exercise, meals, and plenty of time socialize together and build strong connections.

With guidance from our Board of Directors, incredible community partners and support from individuals and business we can help every individual we are privileged to serve reach his or her fullest potential.

We are patriotic. We are bakers. We are athletes. We are employees. We are friends. We are neighbors. We are family. We are Ottawa Friendship House

Raise Your Glass to 85 Years of Service with SOCU!

Celebrating 85 years of dedicated service and community commitment is no small feat, but Streator Onized Credit Union (SOCU) has done just that! Since our 1939 founding within the Owens Glass Bottle Manufacturing plant, SOCU has been a pillar of strength, innovation, and resilience in the community, continually striving to empower members and enhance financial well-being.

In the past year alone, SOCU has exemplified its dedication to its vision of “Growing Communities to be Financially Stronger Together” through the introduction of new products and services aimed at enriching members’ lives. From the addition of the Savvy Money credit score monitoring and goal-setting program, to initiatives like Fresh Start Checking for the unbanked/ underbanked population, and the Mortgage Escrow program assisting with taxes and insurance budgeting, SOCU has demonstrated a commitment to meeting the diverse needs of our members.

SOCU’s impact extends beyond our innovative offerings. Whether providing a member luncheon, serving a free community lunch, volunteering at a local event, or walking in a parade, SOCU has you covered. In 2023 SOCU employees donated over 1,200

service hours. In addition to better interest rates and lower fees, SOCU also returned nearly $609,000 to members through promotions and other benefits. There were 3,370 students and community members impacted in the classrooms and through financial literacy programs provided by SOCU. And over $160,000 in community sponsorships, scholarships, donations & membership activities went to those we serve.

As SOCU looks ahead to the next chapter of our story, we do so with optimism and excitement, confident the successes of the past will pave the way for an even brighter future. Please join us as we celebrate each branch this summer for a special member appreciation day. Celebrations will be June 21st at the Streator-Northpoint Branch, June 28th at the Pontiac Branch, July 12th at the Ottawa Branch, July 19th at the Dwight Branch, and August 23rd at the Morris Branch in conjunction with our new building’s Grand Opening.

To all who have contributed to SOCU’s success—past, present, and future—thank you. Together, let us continue to build upon the foundation of excellence laid down over 85 remarkable years, as we embark on the next chapter of our shared journey. In

tribute to our glass industry origins, please join us as we Raise a Glass to our 85

Years…and Cheers to many more years of service and community impact!
