Region digs out after winter’s first significant snowstorm, prepares for below-zero weather SHAW MEDIA Many northern Illinois residents spent their Sunday shoveling the first significant snowfall of the winter, which is set to be followed by a night of subzero temperatures into Monday, the National Weather Service said. Others made the most of the day off school sledding. For most residents in La Salle, Bureau and Putnam counties, they are relieved the snowfall was not as bad as predicted. Some forecasts called for 4 to 8 inches of snowfall. Princeton and parts of Bureau County accumulated roughly 5 inches of snow and Peru about 4 inches, according to reports. But the majority of La Salle County recorded 3 inches or less, according to several different snowfall reports. Snowfall totals reported in northern DuPage and Kane counties ranged from 4.8 inches to 6.5 inches, according to the National Weather Service snowfall observations posted at 9:44 a.m. Sunday. Within Cook County and its collar counties, Hoffman Estates saw the most snow with 6.5 inches, said National Weather Service meteorologist Rafal Ogorek. A winter storm warning was in effect throughout the day Saturday for most of northern Illinois, according to the weather service and hazardous driving conditions along with numerous accidents were reported throughout the area. Frigid temperatures followed Sunday night into Monday throughout northern Illinois, with lows between zero and minus 10 degrees, and corresponding wind chills that will make it feel between minus 5 and minus 15 degrees, he said. “Fortunately, it won’t last very long,” Ogorek said. “We’ll start a bit of a warming trend Monday into Tuesday. We have highs forecasted in the 30s already for Tuesday.” Monday’s high is predicted between 15 and 27 degrees with a low of 13 to 23 degrees.
A United States flag and a Chicago Bulls banner flap in the gusting wind from a flagpole at the end of East Harrison Street in Granville on Saturday at the height of the snowstorm.
Single-digit temperatures could return later in the week. “There probably will be another shot of cold air coming into the weekend,” Ogorek said. Forecasts show a chance of scattered snow showers Wednesday with a high between 21 and 31 degrees, with lows that night between three and 15 degrees. On Thursday, there is a chance of snow with highs between 10 and 20 degrees followed by nighttime lows between minus eight degrees and nine degrees.
Motorists encounter snowy, ice road conditions
Road conditions were improving, but many highways still were snow-packed or icy throughout northern Illinois by midday Sunday. The Illinois Department of Transportation website showed most major roadways in the state’s northern reaches were at least “partially covered” by ice and snow as of 2 p.m., and many others, especially in Lake and Cook counties, were considered “mostly covered.”

‘Grim Sweeper’ was released Dec. 14 and is available on Amazon By JAYCE EUSTICE
jeustice@shawmedia.com Novel writing was always something on the mind of Spring Valley native Brett Herrmann, but it wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic forced him to work from home that he was able to turn the dream into a reality. Little by little he began to work on his story and now, as of Dec. 14, Herrmann has published his first fiction novel titled “Grim Sweeper” – available on Amazon. Herrmann graduated from Hall High School and attended Illinois Valley Community College before pursuing his degree in creative writing from the University of Illinois. After spending time as a reporter and editor for the NewsTribune, Herrman now finds himself living in Sycamore and working at Kishwaukee College. “My first job out of college was actually at the NewsTribune, but this was

something I always kept on the back burner as more of a hobby than anything,” Herrmann said. “I wrote a lot of short fiction. Some of which I was able to get published, but as far as the novel goes, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.” When the pandemic hit, Herrmann found himself adjusting to working from home like many others across the country. While this was a change, Herrmann used it as an opportunity to help kickstart something he’s always wanted to do. “When the work days ended, I was already sitting right there at my laptop,” Herrmann said. “I just kind of made a decision that I’m going to write for an hour every day after the end of my work day.” Herrmann took advantage of his newly found time and motivation and kept plugging away at the story as it continued to grow. “When I started it, I didn’t even know if it would be something that I’d actually want to get published,” Herrmann said. “I worked it out as I went.” The first chapter of the novel is

dbarichello@shawmedia.com December was the deadliest from COVID-19 in La Salle County in 2021. There were 10 deaths from complications related to COVID-19 since Dec. 23, increasing the number of COVID-related deaths in December to 27, surpassing January 2021, which had 26. There were 102 COVID-related deaths in December 2020, which was the most since the pandemic began. A man in his 30s, a man in his 50s, a woman in her 50s, a man in his 70s, three women in their 70s and three men in their 80s died from complications related to COVID-19. There have been 386 COVID-related deaths in La Salle County since the beginning of the pandemic. Additionally, there were 909 COVID-19 cases countywide since Dec. 23 – up from 511 the previous week. There were 514 residents removed from isolation since Dec. 23. In the past seven days, 30 residents have been hospitalized from COVID-19. Making up the new cases are 35 boys younger than 13, 48 girls younger than 13, 38 teenage boys, 47 teenage girls, 82 men in their 20s, 112 women in their 20s, 78 men in their 30s, 91 women in their 30s, 51 men in their 40s, 71 women in their 40s, 74 men in their 50s, 59 women in their 50s, 40 men in their 60s, 26 women in their 60s, 17 men in their 70s, 19 women in their 70s, five men in their 80s, 13 women in their 80s and three women in their 90s.
A reader submitted a photo of the line of cars Dec. 27 outside of the COVID-19 testing site at St. Margaret’s Health in Spring Valley.
A breakdown of new cases by ZIP code was not available Thursday. La Salle County is experiencing high community transmission based on the 7-day average of new cases per 100,000 (697.53 per 100,000) of COVID-19 (as of Wednesday). In addition, there are 12% of ICU beds available in the North Central health region, which includes La Salle County, which is below the 20% target. Until La Salle County can get a handle on the number of new cases being identified each week and slow the spread that is occurring, La Salle County will continue to be in the state’s warning level.
A warning level means the county saw increases in two or more COVID-19 risk indicators. People should continue to take the recommended public health precautions – vaccinate, booster, wear a mask, avoid crowds, physically distance, stay home when you are sick and test, the La Salle County Health Department said. Because most of Illinois is experiencing high transmission rates, the La Salle County Health Department recommends anyone who may have recently been exposed to someone who has COVID-19 be tested about 5 to 7 days after that expo-
sure, even if they have no symptoms. Early detection allows individuals to gain guidance for medical treatment during early stages of the disease, which can reduce the need for hospitalizations, and can also reduce deaths. Testing also helps us quickly identify and isolate new cases, which reduces further spread of the disease. La Salle County Health Department also urges everyone 5 years and older to get vaccinated and all eligible individuals to get a booster. To search for vaccine available near you visit https://lasallecounty.org/covid-19vaccine-update/ or vaccines.gov.

Continued from Page 4 based on a short story Herrmann wrote while he was in college. It was something that always stuck with him and helped lead him into the rest of the story he wanted to tell. “It was really a jumping-off point for the story,” Herrmann said. “It was nice that I had that written. At the beginning of the pandemic, I kind of went from there.” The story follows a high school janitor, who sees himself as more of a private eye investigator. His case solving leads him into a web of deception where he finds out some messes are even too big for him to clean up. “He goes around the school trying to solve problems while creating more as he goes,” Herrmann said. Herrmann also mentioned the setting for the fictional high school is loosely based on his time at Hall High School and also its rival St. Bede. While the novel came out just a few weeks ago, Herrmann already has seen the support of locals, friends and family on his first venture into the fiction world. “It’s been pretty great and overwhelming support from people from the area,” Herrmann said. “People have let me know that they’ve bought the book and things like that. Panthers drop third-place game Reed-Custer outduels PC at Marseilles Tournament By BRIAN HOXSEY
bhoxsey@shawmedia.com MARSEILLES – It’s hard to know what you’re going to get in a thirdplace game. Normally just 24 hours or so removed from seeing a chance to play for the title dashed, teams have to regroup, switch gears and set a new goal: finishing out the tournament with a win. Both Reed-Custer and Putnam County put together a pretty good prelude to Thursday night’s title game of the 12th annual Marseilles Holiday Tournament, as the Comets took advantage of a couple of late turnovers by the Panthers and hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to capture third place with a 54-51 triumph at Marseilles Elementary School. “This whole week our effort has been good, and we’ve guarded hard, but we just made a few too many bad decisions,” said Putnam County coach Harold Fay, whose club ended the tournament 2-2 to put its season mark at 9-10. “Tonight it was a reach-in here or a bad pass there. I bet we gave them 20 points at the free-throw line. “If we take away a few of the mistakes we made tonight, especially late, in a game that ended up a three-point game, who knows?” Putnam County held a 43-42 lead with just under six minutes to play before a free throw each by ReedCuster’s Chris Hill and Lucas Foote, plus the latter’s 3-pointer from the right corner three minutes later, made it 47-43. Two free throws and a layup by Jackson McDonald, then a pair of free tosses by Drake Smith kept the deficit at two, but three charity tosses by Foote around a PC turnover helped the Comets close out the win. McDonald finished with a team-best 19 points and 10 rebounds, while all-tournament selection Austin Mattingly posted 14 points, four rebounds and two steals for the Panthers, who shot 17-of-43 (40%) from the field and won the rebounding battle 38-33, but suffered 19 turnovers, 13 in the second half. “Putnam County has a really nice team that is athletic, and they have some kids that can really score off the

He was the one chasing McDonald all over the place and maybe held him under his aver-
age, but if not, made him earn the points he got. Stopping, or at least slowing down, McDonald was a big key for us.” Reed-Custer received a game-high 27 points and three steals from Foote, an all-tournament honoree, with Hill adding eight points and eight rebounds.
“The kid we’ve been wanting to step forward is Lucas Foote, and he did tonight,” Porter said. “When we needed a basket, Lucas got it for us. We were able to get him the ball in the post a couple times, but they took that away in the second half. But whenever we

MARSEILLES HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT: PUTNAM COUNTY 64, SOMONAUK 48
Strong middle quarters lift Putnam County into semifinals By CHARLIE ELLERBROCK
cellerbrock@shawmedia.com MARSEILLES – It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. Putnam County boys basketball coach Harold Fay said that his Panthers played themselves into a hole early in their Marseilles Holiday Tournament second-round matchup with Somonauk, trailing by as many as 13 midway through the second quarter. But that’s where the Panthers’ slumber ended. Austin Mattingly popped in 10 points, all in a 15-2 PC surge that eventually tied the game at 29. Now with the momentum, Fay’s gang kept it going after the half, getting at least four points from four other players in a 21-8 third quarter on their way to a 64-48 victory over the Bobcats at Marseilles Grade School on Tuesday afternoon. Jackson McDonald touched No. 3 Somonauk for 12 of his game-high 17 points in the opening half, but when Somonauk turned its defense on him,
I’d rather have five guys averaging eight points than one averaging 18. Then they can’t focus on just one guy.” Harold Fay, Putnam County coach Mattingly and the rest stepped up for a 31-13 second half. That earned the No. 6-seeded Panthers a spot in semifinal play against No. 2 seeded Flanagan-Cornell, a game in which PC lost 49-44. The ’Cats were led by Alex Krejci’s 15 points, 12 from Payton Wyant and 10 from Brock Zimmerman, “In the last few games, we’ve gotten off to slow starts and ended up in a hole. It’s been a manageable one, but still not one you want to be in,” Fay said. “We went into a little half-court [pressure] in the second quarter that they probably hadn’t seen, and that little changeup helped us close the gap a bit, but
from then on, especially in the third, it was just a lot of good help defense, nothing spectacular. “[Offensively] we went to ball fakes and back cuts, and that loosened things up. … They did a good job on Jackson in the second half, but the guys all stepped up. I’d rather have five guys averaging eight points than one averaging 18. Then they can’t focus on just one guy.” Somonauk (8-5) was aggressive in the passing lanes and forced turnovers on PC’s first four possessions, taking leads of 8-2 and 13-4 with Krejci tossing in five points. Buckets by Justin Lee and Zimmerman made it 17-10 after one, and it went to 29-16 on a pair of free throws by Payton Wyant with 5:55 left in the half. That’s where the PC rally began. Mattingly converted a steal and sank back-to-back treys before McDonald drained another 3 then passed to Mattingly for the tying layup with 2:42 left of the second. After a Wyant bucket gave the Bobcats a 41-39 lead at 4:37 of the third period, two scores from Chad
WRESTLING
Olson started a 10-0 PC surge that gave it the lead for good. In fact, that rally grew into a 19-2 spurt, producing a 58-43 advantage. PC ended up forcing 26 Bobcats turnovers (progressively five, six, seven and eight per quarter) and shooting 60.4% (26-of43) from the field to Somonauk’s 45% (20-of-44). “We had a good start, high energy,” Somonauk coach Curt Alsvig said, “but then we started turning the ball over with some unforced errors – we had 20 turnovers, which is too high – but they’re good defensively and were tough in the passing lanes. We had a lull, but managed to hang around for a while, but we just couldn’t get anything going. We became stagnant on offense, had some poor shot selections and just couldn’t get anything going. It was just a rough night. “I felt we did a decent job on [McDonald] in the second half, but they have some talent too. They had guys step up – I think Pyszka hit a couple big 3s late – but we just have to do a better job.”

needed him to, he went and got the ball, and he knew we wanted him to have the ball in his hands late. “To come here and go 3-1 and win third, we’re pretty happy with that.” The Panthers trailed 14-12 after the opening period, but used an electrifying finish to hold a 30-28 lead at halftime. Trailing 28-24 in the final seconds, Mattingly nailed a triple from the left corner, then stole the ball at half court before swishing a 35-foot shot at the horn to give his club a 30-28 lead. Reed-Custer used a 11-5 third quarter to lead 39-35 heading to the fourth before Putnam County put together an 8-2 spurt to start the frame. “We didn’t execute our offense the past two games as well as we did in the first two,” Fay said. “We also didn’t do as good of job as I know we can in rebounding. We had way too many times where we just didn’t secure the ball and weren’t strong with it. Reed-Custer is a big, strong team, but we still should have rebounded better than we did.” • Notes: The Panthers went 2-2 at Marseilles, opening with wins over Hall (72-45) and Somonauk (64-48) and falling to Flanagan-Cornell (49-44) in the semifinals. See complete tournament scores on page 9. ... This was the last year of the Marseilles Holiday Tournament. The 2022 event will move to Ottawa Marquette.
