The Illinois Department of Natural resources first announced that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was detected in wild Canada geese in Illinois on March 10 in a joint notice with the Illinois Department of Agriculture.
Stop using bird feeders, baths for now State biologists say avian flu outbreak killing waterfowl, poultry, threatens songbirds Shaw Local News Network The Illinois Department of Natural Resources issued updated public recommendations Friday regarding wild birds and the EA H5N1 strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, a bird flu currently affecting some wild and domestic bird species. While the virus has not been detected in songbird species, IDNR recommends the use of bird feeders and birdbaths cease through May 31, or until infections in the Midwest subside, especially those waterfowl may visit. During spring, wild birds will have ample food sources while bird feeders are removed. Further IDNR recommendations: • Clean and rinse bird feeders and baths with a diluted bleach solution (nine parts water to one part bleach) and put away or clean weekly if they can’t be moved away from birds. • Remove any bird seed at the base of bird feeders to discourage large gatherings of birds or other wildlife. • Avoid feeding wild birds near domestic flocks.
If five or more dead wild birds are observed in one location, an IDNR district wildlife biologist should be contacted. Contact information for district wildlife biologists can be found at www.wildlifeillinois.org. USDA Wildlife Services also may be contacted at 1-866-487-3297. In addition, the IDNR requests all occurrences of dead or sick bald eagles be reported to the agency. When disposing of any dead wild birds, rubber gloves and a mask should be worn, and the carcass should be double-bagged in sealed plastic bags. The bags can be buried away from scavengers or placed in the garbage if approved by the local waste service provider. Anyone handling dead birds should thoroughly wash their hands and any other clothes or tools with soap and water after disposal. With spring turkey season underway, the IDNR notes wild turkeys are less likely to contract HPAI given their behavior and the habitats they occupy. However, turkey hunters can protect themselves by thoroughly cooking game meat to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit and implementing other guidance
found at www.aphis.usda.gov and searching for “avian influenza.” The IDNR announced HPAI was detected in wild Canada geese in Illinois on March 10 in a joint notice with the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Since then, wild bird mortality from HPAI has been confirmed in Champaign, Fulton, Sangamon and Will counties with a more recent mortality event of more than 200 birds in Cook County suspected to be caused from the avian flu. Wild birds affected include waterfowl and waterbird species, as well as some raptors, including bald eagles. Detections in domestic poultry flocks have also occurred.

Tonica woman named IVCC’s Skerston Memorial Award winner Shaw Local News Network Paula Hallock, of Tonica, is the 2022 winner of Illinois Valley Community College’s Connie Skerston Memorial Award for Support Staff Distinguished Service. Hallock, human resources administrative assistant, was nominated by Ottawa Center counselor Valery Calvetti.
“Like Connie – Paula has demonstrated service excellence to our college community,” Calvetti said. “She has participated quietly and professionally on Paula Hallock teams for the benefit of us all. “Whenever I call Paula she makes me feel as if my time is the priority even though I know there are far more pressing matters needing her
time and attention,” Calvetti added. “When an employee turns to Human Resources, it typically involves a very personal need. It is refreshing to have Paula serve as the gateway in HR. When Paula picks up the phone or greets you from her desk, we all breathe a little easier. For years, Paula has served quietly and graciously – helping care for us all.” Hallock has worked at IVCC since 1998. She and husband, Nolan, have two sons. The award is named in memory of
former assistant director of admissions and records Connie Skerston, who died in 2015. Hallock and the other 2022 support staff nominees: Dawn Lockwood and Mary Smith, of CETLA; Gracelyn Quesse, of Student Services; Donna Swiskoski, of the Foundation office; and Manessa Trench, of the Copy Center, will be honored Friday night at IVCC’s employee recognition reception at Grand Bear Resort in Utica – an event Hallock has helped coordinate with colleagues since 2000.

Illinois Valley YMCA to host Healthy Kids Day Shaw Local News Network The Illinois Valley YMCA in Peru is hosting its annual Healthy Kids Day event Saturday, April 30, encouraging families to help children be kids and set them up for a summer of success. The event is free and open to the public. It will feature local vendors, children’s games and prizes, Y program demonstrations and a special appearance by the Pistol Shrimp mascot SouthClaw Sam. The Peru Police Department will host a K-9 demonstration at 9:15 a.m. Other scheduled demonstrations include MBody NMind Yoga at 9 a.m. and tumbling at 10 a.m. The first 100 children will receive a YMCA goody bag that includes a two-week Y pass and all children in attendance can sign up to win one of two bicycles (a boys and a girls).
“At the YMCA, we believe in the potential of all children and each day we work to help kids find that potential within themselves,” CEO Chris Weittenhiller said. “Healthy Kids Day is a fun, free community-wide event to kick off summer and reminds us all how important it is for kids to stay active physically and mentally throughout the summer.” Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2022, Healthy Kids Day is the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well being for kids and families. The YMCA hopes to use the day to get more children moving and learning, creating healthy habits they can continue while they’re away from the classroom. Healthy Kids Day is a reminder to families to ensure all children have access to what they need to reach their full potential, even during out-of-school time.

THE VILLAGE OF MARK IVCC awards more than $1M to more than 1,700 students WILL BE HOSTING CLEAN UP DAYS Shaw Local News Network It paid in more ways than one to persevere in Illinois Valley Community College classes this spring. IVCC disbursed more than $1 million this week to more than 1,700 students who persisted in spring classes. Financial Aid director Eric Johnson said his office transmitted $1,039,644 from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund to 1,775 students. To receive a “spring retention” payment, students had to remain enrolled
until April 7. Those in 12 or more credit hours received $1,000; those in 6 to 11 hours $500. High school students in IVCC’s dual enrollment program also will receive checks. ”We rewarded students who persisted in their IVCC education,” IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said. “These payments can help students with their summer and fall tuition.” Summer and fall registration is underway. 10 A pair of IVCC students will study abroad Shaw Local News Network This summer, Illinois Valley Community College students Sabrina Belmonte, of Mendota, and Raven Bridges, of La Salle, will be taking advantage of the college’s study abroad opportunities. Bridges is a first-year student looking to graduate with her AS and transfer to the University of Illinois for biomedical engineering. She will be traveling to France. While there, she will be taking French I and staying in a private dorm sharing a communal kitchen with other abroad students. Bridges chose France initially for her love of Johnny Depp, but also because of the culture. She took two years of French in high school and felt a longing to experience the country herself. “I am looking forward to meeting new people and having the chance to grow socially as I become more diverse in my travels and networks,” Bridges said. Belmonte, a first-year marketing student will be studying in Costa Rica, where she will be immersed in the culture of a Spanish-speaking community. As someone who studied Spanish all four years of high school and speaks it at home, Belmonte hopes to become fully bilingual.
