At 7 p.m. Wednesday while many locals were sitting down for dinner or relaxing on the couch, Gracie Ciucci and her friends were embarking on a fundraising journey to honor her late father, Eric Ciucci. Eric Ciucci died by suicide in 2014 at the age of 37. He was the Putnam County Girls Golf Coach and is remem bered around the community for his impact on the local youth and love for hisInspiredfamily. by a video on TikTok, Ciucci and her friends decided to com plete the 24 miles in 24 hours chal lenge. The event involves participants running a mile at the top of every hour for a “Whenday. I first saw it I didn’t think the challenge would be that hard, but I was wrong,” Ciucci said. “It’s defi nitely a sacrifice and you’re constantly watching the clock.” Ciucci added many of the partici pants complete the challenge with very little sleep to be sure they do not miss a top-of-the-hour run. “We sleep a little bit, but very little because we are afraid if we sleep we are not going to wake up,” Ciucci said. “We have so much riding on it that we would be disappointed in ourselves and we wouldn’t want to do that to peo ple who are supporting us.”

This year, after first completing the 24 Miles in 24 Hours challenge in 2020, Gracie Ciucci decided to once again honor her father while raising funds for the Illinois Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Through the support of family, friends, local law enforcement and runners who stopped by for a mile or two; the 24 hours are something Ciucci won’t soon forget. The group finished their 24-hour marathon with a final route in Henne pin around the pool and was greeted with smiling faces and rounds of applause from many within their com munity. Jayce Eustice – jeustice@shawmedia.com

Starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday and finishing at 6 p.m. Thursday, Ciucci, along with Emberlin Cwikla, McKin ley Cwikla, Justin Cawthon, Molly Roach and Lauren Faletti, completed the challenge with full hearts, tired legs and cheers of support. “This year we have had more people turn out and more people to support us,” Ciucci said. “It means everything to us.”The runners have run multiple routes around Hennepin and even made some special trips to neighbor ing Granville and McNabb to change up the scenery and give those in other communities a chance to show their support.“We’ve had so much support; a lot more than last time,” Ciucci said. “I think we got the word out a lot better. The first mile there were so many peo ple there with some even sticking around for the next few miles.” Ciucci also added the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office helped the group by lighting the way throughout the night and giving them a safe escort on their mission. With the added support, the group looked to raise $5,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention; a goal that just minutes before departing for the final mile Ciucci was informed they were able to surpass. “We wanted to set the goal to leave room for God to work in it,” Ciucci said. “Even if we didn’t make the goal, we can’t be upset about it because every dollar is going to do something.”

Inspired by TikTok, Gracie Ciucci enlisted friends to run a mile an hour for 1 day

This year, after first completing the challenge in 2020, Ciucci decided to once again honor her father while rais ing funds for the Illinois Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Pre vention.“Suicide has hit close in my family specifically and I know it hits close in this community nowadays,” Ciucci said. “There’s not many people that you meet where suicide hasn’t touched someone and it’s not talked about a lot. We think it should be talked about more in order to save lives and spread awareness about it before it’s too late.”

Peru library receives donation of Star Union Brewery items

Shaw Local News Network

The Peru Public Library recently added a collec tion to its historical archives – beer bottles. John Shimkus, Granville, donated his collection of Star Union Brewery bottles and other memorabilia to the Peru Public Library, 1409 11th St. This culturally significant collection spans the Star Union Brewery’s 100-year history. A sampling of beer bottles, ice picks, coasters, bottle openers and other brewery memorabilia are on display. There also is a Star Union beer cooler substituting as a book display. A brief history of the Star Union Brewery, taken from a La Salle County Historical Society Museum Facebook post, said “The original brewery was established in 1845 by Fred Kaiser and incorporated as the Union Beer Company in 1868. In 1880 the company was acquired by Henry Hoerner who renamed it the Star Union Beer Com pany. Hoerner served as president and general man ager of the company until 1930. In 1920, in response to prohibition, Star Union installed an ice maker and began to manufacture root beer. The bottling works were built between 1892 and 1909 and expanded to the west in 1909 and 1916. After prohibition was repealed, Star Union became one of the largest breweries in Illinois, with over 100 employ ees by 1935. The plant closed in 1966 and is now vacant.” (posted Oct. 26, 2011) Stop by the library to see the Star Union Brewery display. While at the Peru Library, read through the brewery’s centennial book, “A Bright Star for 100 Years,” and Toby Gualandri’s research paper, “The Oldest Brewery in Illinois Star Union 1845-1966.” Both these books are available through the Peru Library’s website, perulibrary.org Genealogy, Local History. Contact the library at 815-223-0229 or perulibrary@ perulibrary.org. The library is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fri day through Saturday. I know most of you remember or think of Rotary as it was years ago … an ALL men’s club made up of Granville businessmen and area farmers, whose wives couldn’t be members but they could be “Rotary Ann’s.”Let’sface it, those women did just as much “Service Above Self” as their husband’s. And now our Rotary club has men and women ranging in age from their 30s to 70s, from all fields – teachers, government, retirees, librarians, business owners, health care, legal field and ag business. Who remembers Granville Rotary with Bruno and Ernie Bucholz, Ray and Nelda Naumann, Jeno and Margaret Bonucchi, Brad and Sharon Acuncius, Jim and Marilyn Hostetter, Bill and Cheri Klein (Adrian), Darrell and Jeanne Alleman and so many others? It was their service to our county that made Putnam County Rotary what it is today. Just as they were over 50 years ago, we are part of an Interna tional service organization that works to make our county a better place to live, send our children to school, raise families, eat amazing food and have fun. While the last couple years have been a struggle, we have persevered, just as all of you and come out better, stronger, more dedicated and ready to work with our schools, villages and all of the people who make up the small est, but mightiest county in Illinois. You could help by being a Rotary Reader for our younger students, pass out the popular dictionaries to third graders and maybe help with my big project by donating a new book of any kind for our year long book drive. It is going to be a great year at Put nam County Rotary! I hope you enjoy our projects and maybe even decide to join us. Cops 4 Cancer raises record $121,984

Shaw Local News Network Cops 4 Cancer’s 2022 summer event in Cedar Point raised a record amount of funds for the nonprofit organization dedicated to help resi dents of the Illinois Valley who have cancer and deal with the financial perils the disease also creates. The event totaled $121,984. Cops 4 Cancer celebrated its 19th year hosting its flagship event. Orga nizers said it began with a dream of “doing something” by Terry Guisti with the support of his family and friends.“We started in my backyard,” Guisti said in a news release posted to the Cops 4 Cancer Facebook page. “That one party has grown into an incredible event that so many great people benefit from. It makes all of us proud.”Formany years, the funds raised were directed to the now dissolved Illinois Valley Community Hospital Foundation. In 2010, the decision to break away from that relationship and have more decision-making power was made. By 2011, Cops 4 Cancer had legally become a 501(c)(3) charity and started helping families directly with their financial needs while battling cancer. “We might be far from the humble beginnings of when the Guisti’s hosted the first event in money raised but we are not too far from then to recognize how important it is to stay connected to why we do what we do,” said President Betty Glynn. “We believe in making a difference. If you were in attendance on Saturday, you were met with a lot of love and appre ciation for believing in C4C and this community.”Theevent contributors, attendees, volunteers and musicians helped make it a picture perfect day, orga nizers“Austinsaid Edwards, who won first runner-up in America’s Got Talent 2020 and an incredibly talented coun try artist, headlined and gave an awe some performance,” Glynn said. “Austin lost both parents to cancer and was only 6 when his mother bat tled. When Kirsten McLendon’s putt rolled around the cup and dropped in on the No. 15 green at Spring Creek Golf Course, she pumped her fist and turned around toward the crowd with a big smile on her face. The birdie putt on the 420-yard par 5 hole secured McLendon the Illinois Valley Wom en’s Golf Invitational championship as she outlasted Karen Anderson in a three-hole playoff.“It’s amazing,” said McLendon, who plays for Deer Park. “I’m not normally a tourna ment player. I usually like play days because I like the camaraderie of playing with the team.“It was a little encouraging by my Deer Park teammates saying, ‘You need to play.’ I played a couple years ago and just thought it wasn’t for me, but it is. These tournaments need to happen for women as well.”

The pair tied on hole No. 17 and again on No. 18 before McLendon’s birdie on No. 15 to win the title. “I just had three solid shots to get me to the green in regulation,” McLendon said. “That’s my main goal is always try to get to the green in regulation to give myself a chance to make a birdie or par putt because usually if you’re struggling and have to rescue that par, it’s kind of nice when you can get it a little bit easier when you’re already on the green in regulation.”Anderson, who plays for Mendota, didn’t know she was playing for the overall title until after the playoff, but said she thinks that helped her. “It feels great,” Anderson said. “I haven’t won anything in this tournament since 2011, so I was happy just to place. I was thrilled with (second overall). “I didn’t realize what I was playing for. I’m glad I didn’t know that. I thought I was play ing for the A title.” Anderson got into the trees on the first playoff hole but managed to escape the trou ble and match McLendon before tying her again on the next hole. three-hole Valley

Grivetti said she hopes this tourna ment finish propels her to a success ful high school season. “This will definitely boost my con fidence for my season to come,” Grivetti said. “I’m hoping this will reflect my McLendonseason.”and Schmitt led Deer Park to the Gross Team title with a 363. Dee Piercy (96) and Terry Folmar (102) rounded out the scores for Deer Park.Anderson helped Mendota win the Net Team title at 300. Farraher, Tammy Howlett and Linda Molln rounded out Mendota’s top four. Mary Kieffer (94) won the B class followed by Tammy Johnson (97) and Nancy Pierson (99), Mary Stander (106) claimed the C class followed by Karen Towns (108) and Jan Booker (109), Shelley Felske (88) won the Senior class and Lana Atkinson (102) won the Super Senior class.

“That first one I was kind of in then trees and I’m bad at punching it out, so I just wanted to get back in the fair way,” Anderson said. “I was lucky she didn’t get closer on her chip. Nor mally, I’m a terrible putter, but I love the greens here and I was putting very well today and making putts I’d normally never make. My drives and second shots are usually pretty good, but it’s the irons, chipping and put ting I usually struggle with. Today, it happened to come together.”

Wiesbrock returns for third varsity season for PC golf

Anderson took home the A class title followed by Gina Elias (93) and Angie Farraher (94). Julie Schmitt placed second in the championship class with an 83 fol lowed by St. Bede senior Gianna Grivetti, who shot an 86 to tie with Cheri Russell but took third on a scorecard playoff. “I’m very proud of myself,” Grivetti said. “I wasn’t really expecting it because throughout the year I’m very much an inconsistent golfer, so I’m very happy with how I did today. “I kind of messed up a little bit at the end, but I kept it together the majority of the round and felt like I was pretty consistent throughout.”

Coach: Sydney Eustice Top returning players: John Wies brock, sr.; Miles Walder, jr.; Logan Keesee, jr.; Jacob Edens, so.; A.J. Fur rar, so. Top newcomers: Andrew Pyszka, sr. Worth noting: Wiesbrock enters his third varsity season and will lead the way for the Panthers after placing ninth at the Tri-County Conference Tournament last year. Eustice said Walder “can crush the ball and is get ting better at controlling his short game.” Keesee, Edens and Furrar also have varsity experience, while Pyszka, a basketball player and all-state base ball player, came out this fall. “He’s a great athlete who knows how to per form under pressure,” Eustice said. “I’m very impressed with his golf game so far and I know he will be a great addition to our team.” The Pan thers look to average around 185 and improve their fourth-place finish in the Tri-County Conference. “Our last few seasons have been focused on experience. With only a few upper classmen, we wanted to build up our course management and golf game,” Eustice said. “This year, we are going to focus on balance. We know what we are capable of but we also know what can be improved.”
