Biden also is extending a pause on all federal student loan payments for what he called the “final time” through the end of 2022. If his plan survives legal challenges that are almost certain to come, it could offer a windfall to many in the run-up to this fall’s midterm elections. More than 43 million people have federal student debt, with an average balance of $37,667, according to federal data. Almost a third of borrowers owe less than $10,000, and about half owe less than $20,000.

In fact many Democrats, from con gressional leaders to others facing tough reelection bids this November, have pushed the administration to go as broadly as possible on debt relief, seeing it in part as a galvanizing issue, particu larly for Black and young voters. loan forgiveness plan announced by Biden

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced detailed plans to deliver on a campaign promise to provide $10,000 in student debt cancellation for millions of Ameri cans – and up to $10,000 more for those with the greatest financial need – along with measures to lower the burden of repayment for their remaining federal student who earn less than $125,000 a year, or families earning less than $250,000, would be eligible for the $10,000 loan forgiveness, Biden announced. For those who also receive Pell Grants, which are reserved for undergraduates with the most signifi cant financial need, the federal govern ment would cancel up to an additional $10,000 in federal loan debt.

The White House emphasized that no one in the top 5% of incomes would see any loan Senaterelief.GOP leader Mitch McConnell said, “President Biden’s inflation is crushing working families, and his answer is to give away even more gov ernment money to elites with higher sal aries. Democrats are literally using working Americans’ money to try to buy themselves some enthusiasm from their political base.”

“That’s 20 million people who can start getting on with their lives,” Biden said. “All this means, people can start to finally crawl out from under that moun tain of debt. To get on top of their rent and utilities. To finally think about buy ing a home or starting a family or start ing a Proponentsbusiness.”say cancellation will nar row the racial wealth gap – Black stu dents are more likely to borrow federal student loans and at higher amounts than others. WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

Jessica Bursztynsky, an Ottawa High School and University of Illinois graduate, was relieved when she Wednesday about student loan information was coming Wednesday in the form of a President Joe Biden announcement after she received a Push notification on her phone, but it wasn’t until after a text from her mother she discovered it would be $10,000 in relief to student loan borrowers who earn less than $125,000 a year. “My mom texted me, ‘Why haven’t you texted me yet,’ ” Bursztynsky said. “I checked Twitter and there it was.”Borrowers who earn less than $125,000 a year, or families earning less than $250,000, would be eligible for the $10,000 loan forgiveness, Biden announced in a tweet. For recipients of Pell Grants, which are reserved for undergraduates with the most significant financial need, the federal government would cancel up to an additional $10,000 in federal loan debt. Biden is also extending a pause on federal student loan payments for what he called the “final time” through the end of 2022.

Bursztynsky was only one of many affected by Wednesday’s news.

Current students would be eligible for relief only if their loans were originated before July 1, 2022. Biden is also proposing capping the amount that borrowers must pay monthly on undergraduate loans at 5% of their earnings, down from 10% previously. The Education Department is to post a proposed rule to that effect, which would also cover the unpaid monthly interest for borrowers who remain current with their monthly pay ments – even when the payments are $0 because their incomes are low.

high among issues that most con cerned people in that age group.

“At this late stage I think that’s the risk we’re running,” he said.

As he tried to shore up support among younger voters and prepare for a general election battle against President Donald Trump, Biden unveiled his initial proposal for debt cancellation of $10,000 per borrower, with no mention of an income cap.

During the 2020 presidential cam paign, Biden was initially skeptical of student loan debt cancellation as he faced off against more progressive candidates for the Democratic nomi nation. Sens. Warren, D-Mass., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., had proposed cancellations of $50,000 or more.

PUTNAM COUNTY AND…..OPPORTUNITIES

Republicans responded swiftly to Biden’s decision on student debt relief Wednesday, calling out the administration for “selling out work ing families” to appease to the pro gressive wing of the party.

“Today’s announcement is an insult to every American who played by the rules and worked hard to responsibly pay off their own debt,”

“The positive impacts of this move will be felt by families across the country, particularly in minority communities, and is the single most effective action that the President can take on his own to help working families and the economy,” said Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Wednesday in a joint statement with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Tweeted Rep. Pramila Jayapal, the chair of the House Progressive Caucus: “This will bring real relief to 43 million people and is a MASSIVE step in the right direction.”

The extension of the pandemic-era payment freeze comes just days before millions of Americans are to find out when their next student loan bills will be due. The current pause is to end Aug. 31. The administration said the Educa tion Department would release infor mation in coming weeks for eligible borrowers to sign up for debt relief. Cancellation for some will be auto matic, if the department has access to to their income information, but oth ers will need to fill out a form.

TO PARTICIPATE IN DRAWINGS AND PRIZES

Biden narrowed his campaign promise in recent months by embrac ing the income limit as soaring infla tion took a political toll and as he aimed to head off political attacks that the cancellation would benefit those with higher take-home pay.

The Biden administration plan would also raise the income floor for repayments, meaning no one earning below 225% of the federal poverty level would need to make monthly payments.Biden’s plan builds on $32 billion in targeted student debt forgiveness his administration has enacted for certain groups of borrowers. Much of that went to borrowers who say they were defrauded by for-profit colleges. The administration also tempo rarily has relaxed the rules for Pub lic Service Loan Forgiveness, a com plex program that allows teachers, social workers and other public ser vants to get student debt canceled after 10 years of monthly payments.

Industry groups had complained that the delayed decision left them with just days to notify borrowers, retrain customer service workers and update websites and digital pay ment systems, said Scott Buchanan, executive director of the Student Loan Servicing Alliance.

“I think the plan as proposed will cer tainly help alleviate some financial strain for loan recipients, especially younger borrowers who are trying to begin their professional lives,” Hettel said. “Hope fully, the plan is funded by cuts to the fed eral budget deficit, as President Biden has stated, and not by increasing the tax burden on middle and working-class peo ple or by increasing the national debt.”

Grush’s concerns lie with the ever-ris ing national budget deficit and national debt, specifically with how certain funds in the COVID-19 relief packages were spent in places that he believes weren’t COVID relief. While he has about $20,000 in student loans, that doesn’t prevent him from having concerns with the relief money.“When you look at our deficit and how it’s climbing and climbing, you know, I understand it’s good to help out the world, but in the same instance, we also need to focus on ourselves to keep our country afloat.”

• Work with a fiduciary. Fi duciaries differ from other finan cial advisors in a significant way. According to Investopedia, fiducia ries are legally bound to put their client’s best interests ahead of their own. Working with a fiduciary can provide peace of mind for individ uals who want to know the person they’re trusting to guide their financial decisions is working on their behalf. That peace of mind can be especially valuable for individu als over 50 who don’t have as much time to make up for financial losses as younger people. Investopedia notes that some brokerage firms do not want or allow their brokers to be fiduciaries, so investors should make sure they’re aware of the legal responsibilities of anyone they trust to manage their money.

• Resist the temptation to avoid stocks entirely. A recent study published in the medical journal The Lancet found that life expectancy, which has increased dramatically across the globe since 1900, is expected to continue in creasing in developed countries in the decades to come. That means people won’t only be working longer, but living longer as well. Investors 50 and over can prepare for that longer life expectancy by utilizing the growth potential of stocks even after they hit the half century mark. Limiting exposure to risk after 50 is still important, but avoiding invest ment risks entirely could lead to a financial shortfall down the road. Managing a portfolio after 50 requires careful consideration of various factors. Deft management of an investment portfolio after 50 can ensure investors don’t outlive their money.

Despite that reputation, upon crossing the half-century thresh old, individuals typically don’t feel that much different than they did when they were still a fun-loving 49-year-old. Though there might not be much to distinguish a 49-year-old from a 50-year-old, a fiftieth birthday is a good time reassess certain parts of life, including finances. Conventional financial wisdom has long suggested reducing risk as retirement age draws closer. But a 2021 survey from American Advi sors Group found that 18 percent of respondents indicated their inten tion to work past the age of 70, while another 12 percent indicated they have no plans to ever stop working full-time. Conventional financial wisdom rooted in retiring around the age of 65 may not apply to individuals who intend to work well past that age. That means recently minted fiftysomethings could bene fit from adopting a new perspective on managing their money after they reach 50.

GRANVILLE – The volleyball postsea son is two months away, but Woodland and host Putnam County played like it was already here in their Tri-County Confer ence opener Thursday at R.M. Germano Gymnasium.TheWarriors jumped out quickly in the opening two sets, winning the first 25-14, but then watched as the Panthers clawed back from deficits of 7-0, 15-6 and 23-21 in the second to eventually win 25-23. The third was a back-and-forth battle in which each squad looked on the verge of victory, before Woodland pulled out a 28-26 tri umph.Woodland improved to 3-0 overall, while Putnam County fell to 0-3.

RECORDCOUNTYPUTNAM

“I feel like tonight at the end we just ran out of gas and were maybe playing a little bit too safe. Props to Woodland. They took advantage of all of our errors in the first set and a half and found a way to get the last couple points in the third.”

Woodland outlasts Putnam County in TCC opener

“The last set I screwed up the [starting] rotation, so that’s on me, but the girls did a great job of adjusting and running with it.

“We had three really big matches to start off our season with Streator, Flana gan-Cornell and now here tonight,” Wood land coach Michelle Pitte said. “This was a really good back-and-forth match. Putnam County is a phenomenal team. ... They are beasts, and they really played us tough from start to finish.

“We had some big shoes to fill coming into the season, and we are slowly starting to doThethat.”final set was tied eight times, includ ing 24-all. A kill from PC’s Avery Moutray gave the hosts the upper hand, but a Pan thers hitting error followed. Woodland then had match point after a kill by Emma Highland, but a tip kill by PC’s Tori Balma kept things going. However, a Panthers lift violation pre ceded a right-side winning swing from Woodland’s Cloee Johnston to end the con test.“This group has a whole lot of fight in them,” Putnam County coach Amy Bell said of her team. “They are not going to give up easily, they are very persistent, and they really showed that tonight. It’s taking them a little while to get started in sets, but once they do get in a groove, they have a lot of fun and things start going our way.”

“I thought we communicated well tonight, and that’s our thing, but especially in those last few points,” Simons said. “We did a good job of not getting too high or too low, and that’s what you need to do in close games. Coach just kept reminding us to play smart and have fun. I think we did both.”Putnam County, which was guilty of 13 hitting and 16 serving miscues, was paced by Balma (seven kills, 16 assists, four digs, six points), Hatton (10 kills, five digs, eight points) and four kills each by Moutray (four aces, 10 points) and Maggie Richetta.

Woodland, which had 15 hitting errors and five serving errors, was led by John ston (nine kills, two blocks, eight points), Highland (five kills, 10 points) and Shae Simons (20 assists, three aces and 16 points).

Woodland jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first set, and when Putnam County closed within 16-12, the Warriors used a five-point run by Highland – with back-to-back kills by Johnston the highlight – to help close it out.In the second set, the Panthers used a five-point burst from Balma and three final points from Ava Hatton – including her own kill and one on set-point from Maggie Spratt – to send the match to a third set.
