Long-awaited Granville’s Ann Wink Children’s Library to open

Open house will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15

Over the past few years, visitors of the Granville Library at 214 S. McCoy St. may have noticed an ongoing trans formation of a certain section of the building. The room located just behind the main selection of books has now completed its transition into the Ann Wink Children’s Library.

This new renovation comes with locally-sourced murals, new chil dren’s books and activities all done in the memory of a clerk who spent decades serving the community and children in Putnam County.

“When kids would do a project, they would go to Miss Ann, sit on her lap, look her in the eyes and say ‘Look what I made,’” Granville Library Clerk Bernie Egan said. “She was very personal.”

According to Egan, the kids always came first to Wink. She would never hesitate to stop what she was doing to give a child an opportunity to be seen and heard.

“Those children remember that,” Egan said. “When people come in to visit they remember [Wink] and know how she was. It was always comfort able and she just saw you, the children especially. This is a tribute to her.”

Wink worked at the old Granville branch of the Putnam County Library for more than four decades and passed away a few years ago. She helped cul minate a caring, loving place that chil dren of many generations could come

and enjoy learning, reading and feel ing heard.

“She brought that energy that made people want to stay here,” Mural Art ist Courtney Ossola said. “That’s what we are also trying to do now with this space.”

The children’s library purchased many new children’s books, alongside a multitude of activities that kids of all ages can enjoy. In the interest of com pleting the room, the organizers also wanted to create unique pieces of art from the community.

“It was really important to every

one involved that the art be reflective, of not just the namesake for the space and the donor and her memory, but also of the community,” Sara Egan said. “It would be really easy to go out and find a service, but the other way to approach it was to source the commu nity and make sure that local talent is represented.”

The organizers were able to find the local help of Courtney Ossola, Jaclyn Ossola and Erika Dean to create two works of art on the library walls.

The first mural shows a culmina tion of inspiration from some of Wink’s

favorite books including a grass bed with flowers surrounding a field of monarch butterflies, an elephant and some mice next to a strawberry.

“I didn’t want to just do a tribute to one of the books,” Courtney Ossola said. “I wanted to include all four and sort of blend them together in their own way to create something new.”

The accompanying art on the other wall depicts more butterflies in a for est, giving the room a completely unique experience.

“This was the first project of mine of this magnitude and I am grateful to have had this opportunity,” Dean said. “Nature and the environment is very important to me as well as com munity and providing the best for children.”

After creating an initial design, the artists were given the freedom to continue and adjust their work as it went from an idea to a physical work of art.

“What I liked about completing this was I was able to develop the design as I painted it,” Courtney Ossola said. “Compared to what I originally drew, it turned out so much more than what I anticipated.”

Both Courtney and Jaclyn grew up in Granville and remember their time with Wink well.

“Ann’s passion and love for chil dren’s literature will be forever

ingrained in our hearts,” Courtney said.

As the project comes to a close, the Granville library will welcome the public to come enjoy the new chil dren’s library from 1 to 3 p.m. Satur day, Oct. 15.

The space was created through the donations, commitment and hard work of many organizations and community members.

The Granville Library would like to thank library patrons, book discus sion group, board members, Director Jay Kalman, Assistant Director Mari lyn Calbo, Ann Wink’s family, Linda Bryant’s family, Charlene Fassino’s family, Keli Egan, Rosaline Calbon, Ben Day, Patrick Harris, Jack Ossola, Toni’s Flowers & Gifts, Jenni Mixon, John Shimkus and countless others for their efforts in creating this com munity-first project.

“We sincerely thank you all for helping to make out children’s library a reality,” Bernie Egan said. “It could not have happened without your interest, support and excitement.”

PREP FOOTBALL: HALL-PUTNAM COUNTY 26, KEWANEE 15

Mac Resetich, Hall continue their playoff push

KEWANEE – The Hall Red Devils have started their playoff run.

Friday night was their latest step.

Hall built a 26-point lead on the legs and arm of senior quarterback Mac Resetich and finished off a 26-15 victory over the Kewanee Boiler makers to spoil their 2022 home coming night.

The win was Hall’s second straight, improving the Red Devils to 3-3 overall, 2-1 in Three Rivers Conference East Division play.

The Red Devils need to win two of their last three to become playoff eligi ble.

“It’s a big win. We stepped on our selves on the road over at Morrison and that was a game we probably should have won,” Hall coach Randy Tieman said. “But we didn’t, and I think maybe we learned from it a little bit. We got one here tonight and we’re in a good posi tion. We’re going to have to play hard the rest of the way, but we feel like we’re in position. We might be able to sneak into the playoffs and see what happens.”

Hall junior running back Joseph Bac idore said the Red Devils know they are in a must-win situation from here on out.

“It’s huge because we have to win every game to secure a spot in the play offs,” he said.

Resetich, who scored a school record seven touchdowns in last week’s win over Mendota, was up to his old tricks Friday, scoring three touchdowns by rush and another by pass. He rushed for 285 yards and threw for 81.

He got the Red Devils on the board with a 20-yard run touchdown run and added the conversion run to put Hall ahead 8-0 with 3:19 left in the first quar ter.

He was just warming up.

The Hall quarterback called his own number again on a draw play, tucking the ball away and racing downfield for an 85-yard TD romp at the 7:11 mark of the second quarter to go up 14-0.

Bacidore, who Tieman said has the ability to run the ball, too, said it’s amaz ing to watch Resetich in action.

“He’s phenomenal. I wouldn’t want him on any other team,” Bacidore said. “I just have to run down with him when he’s running an 80-yard touchdown, cheering him on like a little cheer leader.”

After a timeout to make sure every

one was on the same page, Resetich found a wide open Braden Curran, a freshman, who raced for an 81-yard score. The conversion run failed, but Hall took a 20-0 lead to halftime.

“We put that play in, but we didn’t know if Braden knew to line up in the right formation,” Tieman said. “So we wanted to make sure we had Braden on the trip side. He’s usually the solo guy. We talked about it in the timeout to make sure it was set up right.

“They were playing so far up and with Mac running that motion that way, we figured they would come up. [Bra den] came up like he was going to block the kid and then he just took off. It was good play by him. He did a good job for a freshman.”

Resetich was not done yet.

He took a 46-yard run to pay dirt on the first play of the fourth to cap the Hall scoring at 26 points.

Kewanee (2-4, 1-3) avoided the shut out by scoring on a 20-yard TD pass from Brady Clark to Ben Taylor and a 1-yard TD run by Alex Duarte in the final nine minutes of the game.

“We felt confident coming in, but when you’re not used to winning, it’s scary,” Tieman said. “It got a little scary in the second half, but they held on.”

Hall will seek its fourth win at home next week against Newman (3-3, 1-2).

Riverfront Bar & Grill a great spot for good food

The Italian beef at River front Bar & Grill in Peru was how I like it.

Stacks of well-seasoned beef and loads of mozzarella cheese in every bite filled a toasted, crispy bun. The sandwich also came with pepperoncini on top and au jus for dipping.

This was the perfect entree ($8.50) to take in a Sunday night football game.

Local options are limited on a Sunday evening, and River front’s kitchen is open until 8 p.m. Sundays, meaning diners can get a full stomach by the second quarter.

The bar and grill has plenty of seating both indoors and on an outdoor patio – each with bars. There are several TV sets at the bars and in the dining areas, and the audio of the game was featured on speakers throughout the building, mak ing it a great place to watch.

A trio of people played darts and another group hung out on the outside patio while I was there, but it’s pretty easy to stake out your own space and get comfortable.

The bar and grill has a full menu of appetizers: loaded nachos, cheese curds (regular or garlic), onion rings, pretzel sticks, fried pickles, mush rooms, cheese sticks, fried cau liflower, loaded fries and breaded mushrooms. I opted for the cheese curds ($7) and was pleased at the plentiful serving, acknowledging it could be shared pretty easily within a group of three.

Wings and football go handin-hand, so I tried out an order of six ($7), breaded with hot sauce. Wings at Riverfront are served breaded or naked, and are flavored plain, barbecue, Buffalo, garlic Parmesan, sweet and sour, spicy sweet and sour, or hot. Additionally, the restaurant offers chicken strips and will flavor them how diners like them.

The menu also features all kinds of burgers, sandwiches (including breaded pork ten derloins), wraps, soups, salads, grilled pork chops, pasta and fried chicken/fish.

While I chose to sit indoors, the outside patio offers a close view of the Illinois River. Patrons can eat a dinner or have drinks and watch barges float down the waterway.

I’ve always loved the busi nesses and old buildings on Water Street in Peru, and that feeling of being below the

Route 251 bridge reminds me of the riverside neighborhoods in Brooklyn.

Riverfront’s bar stays open until 2 a.m., but the restaurant closes at 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9 p.m. Fridays and Satur days. They also offer carry outs, which were popular

while I was dining.

If you find yourself in the predicament I often do – it’s getting later and later, beyond the normal dinner time, and your favorite restaurants are beginning to shut down their kitchens – think Riverfront. It is a great option for a late meal, and to take in a sports game.
