Hello Putnam County Record readers, Well, fall is here with Rotary projects in full swing. FundraIsing, Road Apple Bingo and the Back to school Interact picnic were all fun and successful. Now, October brings Polio Awareness to the forefront of Rotary International, Putnam County Rotary and all Rotary clubs around the world who, for over 35 years, have worked tirelessly to eradicate polio.

The first major polio outbreak in the United States was in 1916. Over 6,000 died with thousands more being paralyzed … with most victims being children. In 1929 the “iron lung” was invented that prolonged the life of many polio patients whose lungs were so damaged they could no longer breathe on their own. And it wasn’t until 1953 that the first polio vaccine was created and used to start to help eradicate this crippling disease in the United States.

In 1980, Rotary and the World Health Orga nization launched a Global Polio eradication initiative. And between 1988 and 2020 over 800 million children were vaccinated against polio. By 2011 the money raised exceeded $1 billion when the Bill and Melinda Gates Foun dation matched every Rotary dollar 2 to 1.

In 2000, I had the honor of going to India as part of a Rotary Group Study exchange team. And it wasn’t meeting and discussing domestic violence laws with the Supreme Court Justices of the Indian Court that is my most memorable part of that trip.

It is going into the slums of New Delhi to help vaccinate children against polio that will forever be my favorite memory of India. All of those beautiful, trusting children lining up to get the drops that would protect them from becoming “crippled outcasts.”

Then traveling back into the city to tour a “Polio Hospital” where adults lived in iron lungs and children waiting for surgery to correct leg, foot, and hip deformities. My team sat with the doctors who all explained why they chose to work there … ”to make a difference in the life of a child.” It was truly a life changing day for me.

So with that little bit of Polio history … on Monday, Oct. 24, Putnam County Rotarians will be presenting a program-at Putnam County Junior High to educate, share and even teach the students about polio.

We will describe Rotary’s part in helping to eradicate polio and before we leave we will be “painting pinkies purple.” In countries around the world as each child is vaccinat ed, their pinky nail is swabbed with gentian violet dye so the child will not be vacci nated again by the next group coming to vaccinate. Most of these children wave that purple fingertip as a badge of honor and are so proud to have it!

For me polio. is the clicking of leg braces going up and down the stairs of Standard Grade School and a cane hitting the floor as

they supported Mr. Marchesi on his checking of each class throughout the day. Parents, on Monday Oct. 24, be sure to talk to your junior high students about what they learned about polio and the story of my own hero, Mr. Delmo Marchesi.

This month is one of my favorite months of the Rotary year. I hope everyone has a great month, maybe those old enough look at the small round scar on their arm and remember the fear polio caused in the 1950s and ‘60s. We’ve come a long way to eradicate the horrible disease of polio.

Don’t forget the High School Interact

Grange Halloween party for the kids at the McNabb Fire Department, Saturday Oct. 22, 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is $2 or two canned goods. There will be a costume parade with prizes, games, activities and refreshments for all children attending. Happy Halloween everyone!

Fair elections

We have Democrats saying Republicans are keeping people of color from voting and Republicans saying Democrats want to control elections taking away states rights. I have some ideas that I think will solve all election problems.

1) Have the election on a Saturday and Sun day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. That gives everyone 2 days and 24 hours to vote in person.

2) Eliminate all mail in ballots other than requested absentee ballots. Start this process about five weeks prior to the election and ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on the election Sunday. Any absentee ballot received after that will be rejected. Ballots to be counted by both a Republican and Democrat election official.

3) Make sure everyone is registered to vote. Many say this is a way to suppress voting. Hogwash. You need an ID to fly, to get a loan or mortgage, to drive, to get a credit card, to buy a car or house. 85% of the Black community agrees with this. If not registered, you can register when voting by showing a valid form of I/D.

4) Eliminate all drop boxes. A voter can drop in numerous ballots and this has been documented by camera’s being aimed at these boxes.

5) Begin to announce preliminary results on Sunday evening with final results by Monday evening. This will give election officials time to make sure all votes were counted and properly administered.

Now everyone has plenty of time to vote, do not have to take time off from work and the results will be final in two days not two weeks. Think about it.

PCHS celebrates first homecoming with Hall football co-op

Before the 2022 football season, when Putnam County High School came to an agreement with Hall for a football co-op, it marked the beginning of many new opportunities for Putnam County students.

The co-op gave athletes a chance to try out a different sport, gave the community a chance to cheer for their hometown team under the Friday night lights and most recently gave all Putnam county students a chance to enjoy a homecom ing celebration for the first time.

“They are very excited to be a part of the homecoming parade and the football game tomorrow,” Student Council Adviser Bethany Newsome said. “It’s a lot of firsts and they are very excited.”

On Thursday afternoon, PC students gathered in the school gymnasium for an official homecoming pep rally before the Hall-Putnam County matchup against Sterling-Newman on Friday.

“It’s been really great because the

students have always asked if we could call it a homecoming, but we were never able to because we weren’t affiliated with the football team,” Newsome said. “They have just risen to the occasion of being excited.”

Outside of an official homecoming, the school has previously celebrated a school spirit week to accompany a Sadie Hawkins dance. Now, those plans have been adjusted for home

coming celebrations.

“The student council group is the one that’s been in charge this year,” New some said. “They’ve planned the games. It’s all been student led with the games and decorations. They have done a phe nomenal job.”

Thursday’s pep rally included a lip sync contest, tug of war contest, potato sack races, steal the sock activity, hun gry hungry hippos, a shopping cart

parade and much more.

The event was emceed by the PCHS Student Council and featured perfor mances from representatives of each class in the school.

Organizers said they have seen an increase in participants this year, believing the football co-op has played a large part in the school’s excitement.

“This kids have said, ‘This is ours now,’ and they’ve taken ownership of this idea that it’s now homecoming,” Newsome said. “It’s been really great.”

First-year principal Dustin Schrank said he was encouraged by how the stu dents have embraced this new event.

“It’s been awesome seeing all of the kids dress up and getting excited for their first homecoming,” Schrank said. “It seems like as the week has gone on the numbers have gotten bigger and big ger. All of the school pride you see today is exciting.”

Overall, the school has enjoyed creat ing their new homecoming festivities and looks forward to growing the event in the future.

This is their story.

Comets beat Red Devils as time expires

SPRING VALLEY – With about 10 seconds left and the clock running, the Newman football team scrambled to the line to get off a fourthand-goal play.

Newman quarterback JJ Castle took the snap and fired a pass to Ayden Batten, who went down in the end zone as he caught the ball for a 3-yard touchdown as time expired, sending Newman players running in celebra tion toward the sideline while Hall-Putnam County players were left hunched over or on their knees stunned as the Comets escaped with a 20-18 victory at Richard Nesti Stadium.

“It’s amazing,” Castle said. “This is playoff terri tory for us right now. They were 3-3. We were 3-3. We needed to win all games to be guaranteed in the playoffs so this is a big one for us.”

The Comets called their final timeout before second down with 43.4 seconds left.

“We scheduled two plays to run to hopefully get it in there,” Castle said. “They didn’t end up working out, so we had another play planned and it worked. It’s a miracle.”

Castle said he knew he was going to throw it to Bat ten on the final play.

“Ayden had been burning his kid all day,” Castle said. “He was on the short side of the field. I was going to throw it to him right away.

“I knew he was going to catch that pass.”

The comeback started with some good fortune for the Comets.

The Red Devils punted from their own 45 with 3:10 left and it went out of bounds at the Newman 30, but due to an inadvertent whistle, Hall had to punt again.

After an offsides on Hall, the Red Devils couldn’t get their second punt attempt off as Newman’s Daniel Kelly tackled Hunter Meagher for a 10-yard loss, giving the Comets the ball on the Hall 30.

After a 3-yard loss, an incompletion and a delay of game, the Comets faced a third-and-17 from the 23, but a 15-yard pass from Castle to Nolan Britt and a 2-yard run

by Castle set up the goalto-go situation.

“It worked out in our favor getting a short field,” Newman coach Mike LeMay said. “Honestly, it would have been tough to move down.

“[The final play] was kind of hectic. We got them back in the formation we were in and called a zero pass and I guess the rest is history. He got the ball out and [Batten] made a really nice catch. I’m proud of how our kids exe cuted under pressure. … It’s something we won’t forget. The kids will always remem ber this game and how it

ended the rest of their lives. Of course, you wish you could have stopped them or did this or that, but at the end of the day it doesn’t mat ter. We got it done.”

The Red Devils looked to be in prime position in the fourth quarter.

After stopping Newman on fourth down on the Com ets’ first drive of the second half, the Red Devils marched 80 yards on 16 plays, taking 9:20 off the clock and scoring on a 1-yard run by Joseph Bacidore to go up 18-14 on the second play of the fourth quarter.

Hall then stopped New

man on another fourth down before taking another 4:20 off the clock before the disas trous final sequence.

“I thought our kids played with a lot of heart and deserved to win that game,” Hall coach Randy Tieman said. “They made a couple mistakes and it didn’t work out for us.

“We didn’t get the punt off (on the rekick) and it’s a 60-yard change in posses sion. Our defense played well in the second half, but we were tired at the end. We made three big stops then they complete the pass.”

Hall (3-4) must win out to become playoff eligible. The Red Devils play at St. Bede (6-1) next week before clos ing with Bureau Valley (1-6).

“It puts our backs to the wall,” Tieman said. “We have to get the two wins. We have a daunting task next week going to St. Bede. These guys know it’s playoffs the rest of the way just to get in.”

In the first half, Hall scored first on a 2-yard run by Mac Resetich on the open ing drive before Newman responded with a 17-yard TD run by Castle on its first drive.

Newman went up 14-6 on a 3-yard TD run by Brady Grennan with 6:56 left in the first half, while Hall made it 14-12 at the break on a 5-yard TD run by Bacidore with 2:31 left.

Castle completed 5 of 6 passes for 91 yards and a TD while rushing for 45 yards and a score for Newman.

Resetich ran for 219 yards and a TD for Hall, while Bac idore ran for 38 yards and two scores.
