These tips can help take stress out of gatherings for those with dementia

Most of us will admit that we are creatures of habit. We like our routines and feel safe and secure when we know where we are and what we’re doing.

Routines and structure become even more important for those who are dealing with cognitive conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

One reason is because routines help stave off loss of function. For instance, some days my husband, who has early onset Alzheimer’s, can brush his teeth. Other days, he looks at me as if he’s never seen a toothbrush before. The next night, he’s fine again.

Routines keep Tony able to do things for himself. They also give him a measure of confidence. He knows his own home and can function somewhat independently. Take him out of his element, and he becomes lost and overwhelmed.

So, it’s not surprising that this time of year can be really challenging for the millions of people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

VIEWS

“Changes in the daily routine, large gatherings and noisy environments – all holiday hallmarks – can create extra anxiety for someone living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias,” said Delia Jervier, executive director for the Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter. “Someone living with Alzheimer’s may also feel a special sense of loss during the holidays because of the changes he or she has experienced. It is important to plan ahead and keep your loved one in mind.”

To help families navigate holiday-related challenges, the Alzheimer’s Association offers these tips: Familiarize others with the situation: The holidays are full of emotions, so it can help to let friends and family members know what to expect. Cross talk or simultaneous conversations can be challenging for people living with Alzheimer’s, so try engaging them one-on-one or in smaller group settings.

Build on traditions and memories: Take time to experiment with new traditions that might be less stressful or a better fit with your caregiving responsibilities. If evening confusion and agitation are a problem, turn your holiday dinner into a holiday lunch or brunch.

Involve the person living with Alzheimer’s: Depending on abilities and preferences, make sure to keep the person with Alzheimer’s involved in the celebrations, such as packing cookies in tins or helping wrap gifts.

Plan ahead: When attending a holiday party, prepare the host for special needs, such as a quiet room for the person to rest when they get tired, away from the noise and distractions.

Adapt gift giving to ensure safe and useful gifts: Diminishing capacity may make some gifts unusable or even dangerous to a person with dementia. If someone asks for gift ideas, suggest items people living with the disease can easily enjoy, such as comfortable clothing, favorite music, videos and photo albums.

IVCC to host courses on computer numerical control this spring

Students have an opportunity to start a career in the high-demand, high-pay Computer Numerical Control industry this spring at Illinois Valley Community College.

Wednesday night manufacturing courses beginning Jan. 11 include Fundamentals of CNC Operation (CNC 1200), CNC Milling Machine Operation (CNC 1202) and CNC Turning Center Operations I (CNC 1204) and II (CNC 1206).

The courses lead to work as a CNC operator and entry-level programming, process and manufacturing engineering positions.

Manufacturers across the district are looking for CNC operators, said instructor Scott Fox. Fox has more than 20 years’ experience in industry as a machine operator and set-up and tooling technician. He also has programming, trouble-shooting and engineering experience.

“There is a major shortage of operators and skill sets,” Fox said, adding, “The company I work for is down 4 to 5 operators.”

Enroll today in admissions (CTC101) or call 815-224-0447. For CNC course and career information, call Dean of Workforce Development Shane Lange at 815-224-0219.

Volunteers in these four counties have made a great impact on their communities. Master gardener and master naturalist volunteers participate in educational programs in their communities. Those opportunities may include speaking at clubs, civic groups, or schools; answering calls or emails at help desks; establishing demonstration gardens that serve as educational tools; and educating citizens on how to establish community gardens and resources.

Volunteers met during a potluck and discussed plans for future projects, exchanged gifts, made natural soy candles and celebrated years of service. Certificates, patches and pins were awarded to attendees for

Among active, intern and alumni members, the four-county area awarded certificates for more than 500 years of combined volunteer service.

Three trainees enrolled in the Master Gardener Class during 2022. Marcia Gray, of Grand Ridge, completed her course work in November of 2022 to graduate to intern status.

Police hand out gifts to local families in need

Police department delivers to 31 children in 16 homes

Before Christmas arrived over the weekend, the Spring Valley Police Department made sure to take time to deliver presents to local families in need through its Christmas drive.

Over the course of multiple nights, the department delivered gifts to a total of 31 children at 16 Spring Valley homes.

The presents were purchased entirely through the help and support of local businesses and residents that stepped up to ensure those in need have a merry Christmas.

“A lot of this has been made possible through donations,” said Spring Valley Police Chief Adam Curran. “Whether they’ve been businesses or personal. People are giving anywhere from $100 up to a couple thousand dollars. They’ve all made this possible.”

About 10 years ago, the Spring Valley Police Department began a Shop with a Cop Christmas Drive, along with Project Success. Since then the program has been able to change and grow into a local staple that continues to help those in need.

Curran said that since restarting the program, they have been able to grow from assisting four kids to 31 children in 2022.

Curran added this program is not something the department spends a large amount of time campaigning for, but rather one where the word continues to spread and people want to continue to help out.

“We don’t solicit for anything for this,

The gifts purchased by the Spring Valley Police Department were made possible through the help and support of local businesses and residents that stepped up to ensure those in need have a merry Christmas. ON THE COVER: Spring Valley Police Chief Adam Curran said the Christmas drive is not something the department spends a large amount of time campaigning for, but rather one where the word continues to spread and people want to continue to help out.

it’s all been people who have heard about it through word of mouth and it just keeps growing,” Curran said. “A lot of this comes from the United Way, during their giveaways. I’d say it’s probably more from the donation side of things.”

The department wanted to create a program where they weren’t just delivering one present per child, but rather one where they would have the ability to provide multiple items to every child.

“We try to make it as memorable as possible,” Curran said. “So when they are adults and teenagers, they can say ‘Hey, remember that Christmas the police came and gave us a

bunch of stuff.’ We want to make it really memorable for them for the rest of their lives.”

As the Spring Valley Police Department handed out gifts for the holiday season, they were reminded of the community-first policing philosophy it follows.

Events like these give the police a chance to interact with the community in a positive and memorable way.

“Giving back goes a long way,” Curran said. “It leads to a lot of mutual respect and cooperation. If you have that kind of relationship with the community, I believe it helps with crime rates too.”

These tips can help caregivers and those experiencing dementia no matter what time of year it is. After all, families gather and parties happen for any number of reasons throughout the year.

Taking Tony to any kind of function can be stressful not only for him, but for me too. Instead of enjoying myself, I often find I’m on high alert and worry about making sure Tony is safe and entertained.

If you include and consider the needs of those with special challenges, everyone can have a good time. And caregivers will thank you.

BOYS BASKETBALL – MARQUETTE CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT SPORTS

Pyszka, Voss lead Panthers to Marquette consolation title

Panthers use 13-2 run in final quarter to earn 58-49 victory over Trojans

OTTAWA – On the final day of any tournament – no matter what place the teams are playing for – each squad is hoping to end the get-together on a high note.

The Putnam County boys basketball team did just that during the consolation championship game of the Marquette Christmas Tournament against Dwight on Thursday, Dec. 29, at Bader Gym.

The Panthers, who entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed but fell in their opening game to Wilmington and lost starting guard Austin Mattingly to an injury, used a 13-2 run midway through the fourth quarter to eventually earn a 58-49 triumph over the Trojans.

“We obviously didn’t want to be playing on [the consolation] side of the bracket, but we were able to finish up 3-1 and bounced back pretty

well,” PC coach Harold Fay said, his club improving to 14-4 on the year. “We talked before this game about wanting to be less sloppy with the ball and to be better on the boards. I’m not sure we were in either aspect today, but I really thought we played hard on defense and did a pretty good job of making [Dwight’s 6-foot-7 forward Wyatt] Thompson take tough shots for the most part. ... He’s a load.”

The teams traded short spurts for much of the game, but Dwight held a 43-40 lead with 4 minutes, 47 seconds left in the final stanza after a 3-pointer by Luke Gallet.

But from there, consecutive treys by Spencer Voss, four free throws by Owen Saepharn, and a triple off the bench by Bryce Smith helped the Panthers hold a 53-45 advantage, one they were able to maintain over the final two minutes.

Voss finished with a game-high 21 points, including four 3-pointers,

Saepharn had 10 points, and Andrew Pyszka (seven rebounds, 11 assists) and Jackson McDonald (six rebounds) scored eight points each.

“Losing our first game here hurt, and having Austin get injured was tough,” Pyszka said. “We had to change our mindset to try to win our next three games, and we talked about how we couldn’t change the past but just move forward. We did that.

“This wasn’t the game we wanted to be playing in, but I thought we did a really good job of bouncing back after not playing well and losing here back on the opening day.

“Spencer had stepped up from the second Austin got hurt. In the past three games, he has hit big shots for us, and you can see his confidence get stronger with every game. His back-to-back 3s in the middle of the fourth quarter today really gave us a big spark and helped us get over the hump.”

Thompson led Dwight (5-10) with 12 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. He finished the four-day event with 102 points, fifth all-time in the tournament’s his-

tory.

The Trojans also received 10 points from Gallet, nine from Dawson Carr, eight from Conner Telford and seven from Jack Duffy.

PC sank 44% (19 of 43) from the field compared to 33% (18 of 54) by Dwight, while the Trojans held a 33-21 margin in rebounds.

“I really didn’t think we played that badly today,” Dwight coach Jeremy Connor said. “It was a tough day for Wyatt, as [Putnam County] had three guys around him every time he touched the ball. I know he’s my player, but I really felt there were a number of times he was getting hung on or was hammered going to the hoop, and it wasn’t called. It was just a frustrating day for him, but he had a heck of a tournament for us.

“I think we really made some great strides as a team in the four games here, and I’m feeling pretty good about how we are playing heading into the second half of the season.”

Putnam County resumes play Jan. 6, hosting Tri-County Conference foe Woodland.
