IVCC to offer private pilot ground training course

Illinois Valley Community College’s Continuing Education Office offers a 10-session Private Pilot Ground Training course Thursday, Feb. 9, through Thursday, April 13.
The main campus course (ID: 7213) prepares students for the Private Pilot Knowledge Exam and provides knowledge of flight controls and instruments, airport and airspace considerations, aircraft weight and balance, aircraft performance tables, basic weather meteorology, federal aviation regulations, flight psychology and emergency preparedness.
Students will tour Illinois Valley Regional Airport in Peru and experience a flight simulator from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. Other than the airport session, class meets 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays with instructor Joseph Nimee.
Upon completion, students will be eligible to take the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Exam (there is an additional fee for the test).

Textbooks include Federal Aviation Regulations Aeronautical Information Manual, Private Pilot 2023 Test Prep and the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. The texts are included in cost of the class.

Ruth Delores Colby
Born: October 26, 1920 in Hennepin, IL
Died: January 28, 2023 in Ottawa, IL
Ruth Delores Colby, 102 years young, of Heritage Health Care (formerly of Hennepin) passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Saint Elizabeth Medical Center, Ottawa. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3, 2023 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Hennepin. Fr. Patrick DeMeulemeester will officiate. Burial will be in St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3, 2023 at Dysart – Cofoid Funeral Chapel, Granville. Rosary will be recited at 8:30 a.m.
Ruth was born on October 26, 1920 in Hennepin to Paul Levi and Mary Eliza (Gleason) Smith. She married John Colby. She graduated from Hennepin High School. She worked at Elwood Ordinance in Wilmington, Green River Ordinance in Amboy, West- clox, in Peru and Harper Wyman in Princeton for 29 ½ years. Ruth was also a hostess at Econo Foods in Peru, she enjoyed meeting people and they would tell her they just loved seeing and talking to her also.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and St. Patrick’s Altar & Rosary Society.
Survivors include one daughter, Rita (Gary) Borri of McNabb; one son, Ken Colby of Hennepin; one sister, Helen Henning of Heritage Health Care, in Peru. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jason (Tanya) Colby, Josh (Dana) Colby, Mike (Kelly) Borri, Joe Colby, Christina (Josh) Eshleman and Aimee Hernandez; 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her sister, Grace Henning and one great granddaughter, Jocelyn Colby. Pallbearers will be Jason Colby, Michael Borri, Joe Colby, Josh Colby, Josh Eshleman and Ron Colby.

Richard Haywood

Richard Haywood, 85, of Washington, Illinois, passed away January 31, 2023 in the company of family.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at Dysart – Cofoid Funeral Chapel, Granville. Military honors will be at 1:00 p.m. Cremation rites will be accorded.

He was born in Spring Valley, Illinois, to Elmo and Carlene (Mavity) Haywood May 19, 1937. He grew up in DePue, Illinois with his three brothers and five sisters. He was preceded in death by his sisters Elizabeth (Betty) Wozniak, Sandra Raccuglia, Gayle Revels, and his brothers James and Raymond. He attended DePue Grade School and Hall High School in Spring Valley.
He left high school to join the army infantry division in 1955 and transferred to the 1st Airborn Battle Group where he earned his parachute badge. After his discharge in 1959 he worked for Castagnoli in Granville briefly before going to work for the Illinois Department of Transportation, traveling around the state repairing and rehabilitating some of the numerous covered bridges. This was something he was always very proud of. He joined Operating Engineers Local 150 in 1964 and had a long career as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in his mid-60s. He joined American Post 180 in Granville late in life and was an active member until 2015.

Rich enjoyed socializing and made friends easily, he could pick up a conversation with just about anyone he met. He was part owner in a bar in the late 70’s called the Four Aces, located in Mark, Illinois. This gave him the opportunity to do what he loved, stand around chatting with people while sipping on a beer.

He moved to Arizona in 2015 to be near his daughter Laurel, where he enjoyed the desert scenery and loved to go to the local bars and listen to the live country music. He became friends with several of the local musicians and really connected with one of the female performers. They married in 2017. After the sudden passing of his wife Vickie (Moyer) in 2018, Rich moved back to Illinois and lived in Washington until the time of his death. He is survived by his; children, Rick (Carol) Haywood of Middleton, Idaho, Michael (Lori) Haywood of Washington, Illinois, Laurel Haywood of Holbrook, Arizona, and Shawn (Diana) Haywood of Middleton, Idaho; grandchildren: Melody Mullin, Corey, and Kyle Haywood, Sheena Lott, Garrick Haywood, Kayleigh Bonneur, Christina, Hanna, Jesse, and Patrick Gabaldon, Brittany and Ashley Haywood; numerous great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; brother Carl, and his sisters Barbara Bezley, and Debra (Danny) Ellis.
