A new garbage hauler and recycling service will start in January in Granville. LRS, which provides garbage hauling and recycling services to La Salle, will replace Waste Management. Waste Management will continue to be the village’s provider through the end of the year. The company will be picking up its containers Dec. 29 through Jan. 5. Containers will need to be set at the curb during this time. Residents will be receiving postcards from LRS. Contact LRS to request a 65-gallon waste container before Dec. 5, or the default will be a 95-gallon waste container. The recycling container will be 65 gallons. The service day will change to Friday, with the first trash and recycling service day coming Saturday, Jan. 6. Service will be delayed one day because of the holiday. LRS only will service LRS-supplied containers. An additional container can be rented for $5 a month by contacting the company.

A new garbage hauler and recycling service will start in January in Granville. LRS, which provides garbage hauling and recycling services to La Salle, will replace Waste Management. Trash will be serviced weekly, and recycling will be collected biweekly. For pickup, containers must be placed curbside by 6 a.m. One bulk item is allowed per week (excess trash is not included). In the event of extra waste, call 309-588-4410, as additional service fees may apply. For information, email monmouth@lrsrecycles.com.

“This was a very difficult decision for the board to make. We have always been happy with WM‘s service but feel this change was in the best interest of our residents and have confidence LRS will provide exceptional service to you all,” the village said in a Facebook post. “Please be patient as we roll out WM and roll in LRS.”

Students made floor plans, maps to escape their homes in event of a fire SCOTT ANDERSON

sanderson@shawmedia.com Putnam County Elementary students Arya King, Giada Wright, Priscilla Serna and Octavia Walter won the Escape Floor Plan contest held by the Hennepin Fire Department, and as a result, got to ride on a fire truck to school. Students had to draw a floor plan or map of their home showing all doors and windows. Smoke alarms had to be

marked in each plan. A family meeting place was required to be marked on the drawings. Winners were awarded Amazon gift cards. The Hennepin Fire Department has been holding the contest for several years. The department stopped the event during COVID-19 and continued it for the first time since the pandemic this year. The department picks the winning children up on a firetruck and buses them to school.

Air Force veteran shares experiences with Chief Senachwine NSDAR SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

A focus on sharing military information was presented at the Nov. 4 meeting of the Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR that met at the Henry Library with Diana Williamson serving as regent. The speaker was Dory Curnayn of Winnebago, whose topic was My Experiences in the Military. Curnayn, a retired member of the U.S. Air Force, served in Japan and deployed for Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. In addition to the rigors of serving overseas, Curnayn shared favorite episodes during her 20-year service. She also displayed her collection of military clothing and safety equipment. Women have served in the Air Force since 1948. Today, there are almost 70,000 women on active duty service in this branch of the military, Curnayn said. Also reported by prospective member, Sandy Miller, of Magnolia, was the ceremony held at the Granville Cemetery for a North Carolina slave turned Illinois soldier during the Civil War. America Reddick (1840-1912) settled in rural Putnam County where he farmed, married and raised a family. Until recently, his grave was never marked.

Almost 100 years later the discovery of his obituary and service record encouraged members of the Putnam County Historical Society to seek a military headstone for Reddick. Following dousing for the grave by Miller, the headstone was placed Oct. 21 with Civil War reenactors, local veterans and relatives, Toby Reddick Jr. and Sr. who flew from California, present for the ceremony. America Reddick is Toby Reddick Sr.’s great-grandfather. Chapter members planned their customary Veterans Day ceremonies. Members signed cards thanking veterans for their service. Cards were delivered on Veterans Day. A report was filed during the business meeting that Chief Senachwine members who attended the Oct. 20 District II meeting assisted in the assembly of 1,000 poppies. Armistice Day information was shared by Commemorative Events chair Molly Kercheval. Her report also covered Revolutionary War battles that occurred in the month of November. The next chapter meeting is set for Friday, Dec. 1, at the Lake Thunderbird Clubhouse. Any woman older than 18 who wishes to learn more about Daughters of the American Revolution is invited to visit www.dar.org.

Spring Valley restaurant, The TakeAway, opens Menu to feature homestyle favorites through family recipes By MARIBETH M. WILSON mwilson@shawmedia.com

A restaurant set to serve reimagined homestyle favorites with generational family recipes will open Thursday in Spring Valley. The TakeAway, owned by Mayor Melanie Malooley Thompson, will be located at 221 E. St. Paul St. It will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday to Tuesday, 11 a.m to 7 p.m. Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Thompson said she wanted to open a restaurant in the hopes of revitalizing the downtown. “We are one building at a time trying to stimulate growth and make Spring Valley a destination for everyone in the valley,” she said. “We also have a sister company, that is owned by my son Tyler Thompson.” Tyler Thompson recently opened the Tee Box, a sports bar and lounge with golf and multi-sport simulators. “This will complement his business,”

Malooley Thompson said. “By being able to provide appetizers and sandwiches ... as well as offering fresh food.” The TakeAway will offer “a fusion of cherished family recipes and beloved regional favorites,” such as bruschetta, The Tee Box chopped salad, double smash burger and weekly dinner specials. Malooley Thompson said growing up she would spend time cooking with her mother, so including some of her family’s recipes was an important aspect, such as the cheese bread or spinach artichoke dip. “My family, we’ve always made this cheese bread,” she said. “It’s like a cheese blend that everybody at every family gathering loves. It’s big bread with cheddar cheese blend and spices.” The TakeAway also will have desserts, such as flourless chocolate torte, homemade chocolate chip cookies, cheesecake with rotating toppings and Dottie’s, Malooley Thompson’s mother’s, Dutch apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Malooley Thompson said the restaurant will offer catering, including box lunches, platters and holiday meals. For information on catering or The TakeAway, visit thetakeawaysv.com or call 815-554-9050.

2023 NEWSTRIBUNE GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR: PUTNAM COUNTY’S MAGGIE RICHETTA

Richetta put versatility on display Putnam County standout filled stat sheets throughout senior season By KEVIN CHLUM

kchlum@shawmedia.com Growing up, Maggie Richetta considered softball her main sport. But when she was called up to the varsity volleyball team as a freshman at Putnam County, that began to change. “It really boosted my confidence when coach [Amy] Bell pulled me up to varsity as a freshman and I realized if I worked hard, I could be a lot better,” Richetta said. She did work hard, and she did get a lot better, becoming a strong all-around player. “When I met Maggie as a freshman, I knew she was athletic, and I knew she was willing to put in the time to be great when she was older, and she really did put in that time,” Bell said. “She has a fire in her eyes, and she is going to do anything to be successful and help make the team successful. “When she was a freshman and got to play varsity, we talked about just putting up a strong block, and if she got the ball, just do her best to swing. Sophomore and junior years, she really learned that she could hit different shots. She didn’t need to get a perfect kill every time. Junior and senior years, she came full circle, being a really aggressive player all the way around.” Richetta was dominant in her senior year, ranking second in the area in kills (3.4 per set) and blocks (0.9 per set), third in digs (4.7 per set) – tops among nonliberos – and tied for seventh in aces (0.6 per set). She led the Panthers to a 23-12-1 overall record, a 7-2 record in the Tri-County Conference, a regional final Scott Anderson appearance and was voted the TCC Player of the Year. BASKETBALL: WALLY KELLER INVITATIONAL

PC boys finish 1-4 at tournament By KEVIN HIERONYMUS

khieronymus@bcrnews.com The Putnam County Panthers won their first game of the Wally Keller Invitational at Kewanee Wethersfield last week, but then dropped their final four, finishing 1-4. The Panthers scored their lone win on Nov. 20, defeating Elmwood 58-35. In other games, the Panthers lost to Wethersfield (73-31), Annawan (43-39), Bureau Valley (52-38) and Stark County (50-43). Annawan beat the host Geese 52-50 on Saturday to finish 4-1 for the championship. Bureau Valley (3-2) finished second by the defensive points tiebreaker over Wethersfield and Stark County, which also went 3-2.

Putnam County 58, Elmwood 35:

Orlando Harris poured in 35 points, 21 in the first half and 14 in the second, to lead the Panthers to a runaway victory in their first night of the tournament. Gavin Cimei added nine points and Owen Saepharn had seven for PC, which led 30-19 at the half.

Wethersfield 71, Putnam County 33:

The Geese took a 32-20 halftime lead and outscored the Panthers 22-8 in the third quarter and 39-11 in the second half to win Nov. 21. Saepharn hit two 3-pointers, finishing with a team-high eight points. Harris and Bryce Smith added five each.

Bureau Valley 50, Putnam County 38:

The Storm stretched a seven-point

halftime lead to 12 by outscoring the Panthers 11-6 in the third quarter with Chhim hitting a buzzer-beater 3-pointer for a 40-28 lead. Elijah Endress and Birdsley also hit 3-pointers to fuel the Storm’s fire. BV used an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter to open a 50-35 lead to put the game away. Saepharn hit four treys, leading the Panthers with 14 points while senior Harris added 12 points. Corbin Chhim had 13 points and Landen Birdsley had 12 for the Storm. Elijah Endress added nine points and Hulsing had eight. Saepharn hit a 3-pointer from the left corner for PC’s first points of the game and added another trey late from the right corner to shoot the Panthers to a 13-13 tie. The Storm closed the first quarter with a hoop by Hulsing and a steal and layup by Chhim to beat the buzzer for a 17-13 lead. Saepharn hit the third of four treys of the night to start the second quarter and Harris scored on a drive to pull PC to within 25-22. BV countered with a basket on the break by Hulsing on a pass from Helms. Chhim then made a nifty lob pass to Birdsley over the PC defenders on an inbounds play past halfcourt, and Birdsley took in a reverse layup before the buzzer to give the Storm a 29-22 halftime lead.

Annawan 43, Putnam County 39:

The Braves started fast and finished strong to beat the Panthers on Friday, Nov. 24, outscoring PC

16-9 in the first quarter and 15-6 in the fourth quarter. Harris led the Panthers with 19 points and Saepharn added 11. Sims had 12 points for Annawan and Childs added 10.

Stark County 50, Putnam County 43:
