PRISON DEATH

Fourth inmate has died at Thomson prison Man was found unresponsive in cell BY ERIC INGLES eingles@shawmedia.com THOMSON – Federal Bureau of Prisons officials say an inmate at Thomson prison has died, the fourth such death this year at the high-security lockup. At least three of the inmates died after fights with other inmates. Patrick Bacon, 36, was found unresponsive in his cell around midnight on Friday, Dec. 18. Staff began life-saving measures and called emergency medical workers, but Bacon was pronounced dead at the hospital where he was taken,

BOP officials said. No other circumstances surrounding his death were released. Bacon was serving a 10-year sentence levied in California for assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm, aiding and abetting and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. According to records from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Bacon was imprisoned in Victorville Federal Prison in California when he stabbed another inmate with a metal shank, fracturing the man’s sinus cavity and causing stab wounds to his head and chest. Bacon was appealing the conviction because he had not been allowed to employ an insanity defense. He had been in custody at Thomson since October 14.

This is the fourth inmate death this year at Thomson prison and the third in the past month. One inmate was found unresponsive the morning of March 2 and died 3 days later of severe head injuries; one died Nov. 27 after a fight with another inmate, and the third happened Dec. 3 when another inmate was found unresponsive; he, too, died of injuries suffered in a fight, sources told The Associated Press. The federal prison system in general, and Thomson in particular,

has been plagued by understaffing and hiring issues. Thomson prison, which has 200 openings for correctional officers alone, has held several job fairs, and announced Nov. 24 that it would offer a 25% recruitment and relocation incentive. As of Saturday, the penitentiary and its adjacent minimum-security satellite camp housed 1,387 male inmates, its website said. Thomson is authorized to employ 611 staff, including 365 custody staff, but as of June, the facility had only 411 employees, including 203 custody staff, on the payroll. There are more than 175,000 federal inmates in 122 prisons nationwide, but homicides are fairly rare: According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 160 inmates were killed between 2001 and 2016.

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com Children in Shannon can get a look at Santa’s workshop this holiday season, courtesy of Eastland Feed and Grain. About a dozen employees have been working on a project, Kringle et al, that will replicate the place where Santa Claus and his crew makes toys to be distributed to good boys and girls. The display is located at 417 W. Market St., in a multi-purpose building owned by Eastland Feed and Grain. The finishing touches were wrapped up Monday night, and it will be available for viewing starting Tuesday. “It gets kids more excited about Christmas and brings the spirit of Christmas back, to know Santa’s workshop,” said Stacy Coulthard, human resources director at Eastland Feed and Grain. “It brings that magic back, to see everything that happens in Santa’s workshop.” The company had a small display

at the site a year ago, then expanded it for this season. It now includes a reindeer, sleigh, Santa’s tools, presents, a tree, stockings, a children’s ‘nice’ list, a world map for Santa’s travels and a mailbox for Santa’s letters. Those viewing the display are asked to come after dusk, to get the full effect. “They’re not going to get much out of it if they’re not there in the dark,” said Roger Coulthard, general manager at Eastland Feed and Grain. “It really needs to be after

ight about now is when I typically do a review of the last year. When 2020 started we had no idea where this year would go. We started full of hope and looking forward to a new year. Goals were set and programming planning was taking place. Then to say the least, the bottom fell out quickly. The Young Leaders were able to get the Harvest for All in and collected over $27,000 that was distributed out to the food pantries in the county. We also co-sponsored with COUNTRY Financial our annual Crop Insurance and Marketing update. Right when we thought 2020 was on a role and things would be great COVID hit. While it seemed like wow a free vacation working from home that thought only lasted about 15 minutes. I have to say our business has changed quite a bit in the past 14 years that I have been manager. One thing that has really changed is the use of technology. No longer do things come in the mail, but with

COMMENTARY AT A GLANCE Chastity Welch email and the internet, we are all able to get information with just a touch of a button. I transferred all calls to my cell phone and set up shop at the dining room table. Trying to stay relevant during that time was a struggle for me. We were all in a world of chaos and uncertainty experiencing something we had never seen. When asked what I do, which is a question I really don’t like as it is hard to describe somedays, as it seems one thing I do a lot of is event/ meeting planning. In this new world we were thrown into, that was one thing I could not do. And who knew when I would be able to do it again. We transitioned into helping others, which is a big part of what we do. We worked with neighboring County Farm Bureaus to donate milk and cheese to our local food pantries as the dairy industry was hit with extra supply. We worked with Vita Plus, the livestock feeders and pork producers to donate ground pork and ground beef to the

Who knew at that point masks would become mandatory for months! While there was a point in time where I dreaded driving to a meeting for an hour when I would spent 2-3 hours on the road, I grew to miss that as our world really became virtual. For me the road time is when I do my best thinking in fact at times I wish I had a driver as it is pretty hard to make notes while driving and lord knows my memory is shot.

My best ideas come on the road. I also had grown a fondness for podcasts and audiobooks over the years. I found my self not listening to them as much. With accomplishing my work quicker, I turned to a new passion I have. I became a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach. My nights became study time. We all know I like to stay busy and helping others is another passion. I have started teaching people what I have learned in my fitness journey and helping them reach their goals. Stay tuned for next week as I recap the second half of 2020 as we lay it to rest.

dark because it’s going to be backlit inside. You can’t see much inside during the day.” The “et al” part of Kringle et al is Latin for “and others,” a philosophy that Roger Coulthard embraces. The company he manages would not be what it is without the cooperation of employees and customers, and it is in that spirit that makes Santa’s workshop hum along at peak efficiency. There is no charge to view the workshop, and it will be lit up from dusk until dawn for the rest of the holiday season. Proper social distancing practices need to be observed, and all that is asked is that visitors enjoy themselves. “Basically they’ve got to come and peek in the windows, which is just what Santa Claus does when he’s checking who’s naughty and nice,” Roger said. “Now you know how Santa Claus does it.”

Carroll County teens reported

drinking and driving

Most teens killed in alcoholrelated crashes involving teen drivers... are the young drivers themselves – and their passengers. PARENTAL GUIDANCE REQUIRED

TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT NOT USING DRUGS

The winter holidays are a time to enjoy the company of family, friends and co-workers. Where does substance use fit into this picture? The widespread availability of alcohol at holiday parties gives our youth many opportunities to sneak alcohol when no one is looking or convince a relative to let them enjoy “just one” alcoholic beverage. And some parents may be more inclined to let their teenagers have an alcoholic drink to share in a family toast, or otherwise share in the “holiday spirits.” So, you might ask, where is the harm in that? Let’s make a list. • The younger a child is when he/she starts to drink, the more likely there will be alcohol-related problems later in life. • Alcohol use by teens affects still-developing brains and impairs memory and learning. • Teens who drink are more likely to commit or be the victim of violence (including sexual assault) and to experience stress, depression, and suicidal thoughts. By allowing underage drinking during the holidays, adults deprive teens of clear, common sense and consistent guidelines they need to make good choices all year long. It is clear that parents who talk with their teens about underage drinking, set expectations for behavior, and enforce consequences for violating the rules are significantly less likely to have children who use alcohol. The silver lining in this holiday cloud can be found in widespread agreement among teens that their parents are significant forces when it comes to decisions about alcohol. There are some simple things that you can do to lessen the exposure of your children to holiday substances. Consider these holiday celebration tips: • At your holiday gatherings, offer plenty of non-alcoholic foods, drinks and activities. • Model responsible behavior by making sure that guests who have been drinking do not drive. • Let your child know what to expect. Tell your children that adults may be drinking alcohol during the holidays, but under no circumstances are they allowed to. • To lower the risk of alcohol poisoning, be sure to empty partially full alcoholic drinks. Children love to imitate adults; if they have access to leftover drinks they may be tempted. Children are much more sensitive to alcohol than adults. Alcohol is found in beer, wine and distilled liquor, such as vodka, whiskey, rum or bourbon. It is also in perfumes, aftershave lotions, and mouthwashes. Vanilla and almond extracts also have high alcohol content. Make sure to keep all of these products out of the reach of children. • Parents, grandparents and babysitters should also be extra vigilant during the holidays. Visitors often leave medicines on nightstand or in the bathroom, making them easily accessible to children. Medications given to senior citizens often do not have child-resistant closures, allowing children to open tem with very little difficulty. Also, purses of visitors may contain medicines and other potentially dangerous items. Remember that the homes of friends and relatives may not be poison-proof,particularly if children do not live there. Why not create some substance-free holiday traditions for your family? It’s a great way to show your child that you can have fun during the holidays without alcohol or drugs. You can find a number of unique non-alcoholic recipes that can add flavor to your party by giving your guests healthy, tasty alternatives to alcoholic beverages. CCSEC encourages more dialogue around underage drinking—especially before and during the holiday season. The conversation should not be whether the behavior is right or wrong, but rather the health effects to the developing brains and bodies of children and youth. We need to move beyond debates and focus on health risks and safety implications. Our messages should be consistent and clear: underage drinking is unhealthy, unsafe, and unacceptable. Visit us at our office at 114 West Market Street in Mt. Carroll or check out our website at www. drugfreecarrollcounty.org which will be having information for parents and access to resources. All of us at CCSEC wish you a safe and joyful holiday season.
