New winter festival coming to Fulton and Clinton on Feb. 2-4 Embrace The Winter is a community and fine arts festival offering more than 50 events and activities over three days throughout Fulton and Clinton and Camanche, Iowa. An updated list of events is available on Facebook at facebook.com/ EmbraceTheWinterFestival. “We will have something for every age, stage and walk of life,” said Lesley Webster, director of Placemaking & Tourism, who promotes tourism for both Clinton and Fulton. From a student art show, to a 21 and older game of extreme Capture The Flag, events are designed to appeal to everyone. Webster said the three-day festival was intentionally scheduled the same weekend as Clinton Community College’s 4-mile run called B-rry Scurry. “It is the 43rd anniversary of B-rry Scurry and we know that they run no matter the weather, so it seemed like a good fit to build activities around this race,” Webster said. Activities kick off Friday night with two main events. Friday Night Lights will bring bonfires to the downtown areas with fire rings located along Fulton’s Fourth Street and Clinton’s his-
toric downtown on Fifth Avenue South, as well as Main Street in the Lyon’s neighborhood. Each location will be hosted by a local church or nonprofit agency that is providing and maintaining the fire. Bonfires will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and local stores are encouraged to stay open late. After the bonfires, everyone is invited to gather at the riverfront for the 7 p.m. Community Glow. Luminaries will line the riverfront sidewalks in Fulton’s windmill district and in the area of Clinton’s Sawmill Museum on the north end. Attendees are asked to bring glow sticks to light on a given signal as both communities will celebrate with each other across the river. The tourism department of the Grow Clinton offices had applied to set an official World Record with this event. “Unfortunately, the turnaround time for Guiness World Record paperwork is longer than expected, so this year will just be practice,” said Matt Parbs, vice president of Grow Clinton. The first 1,500 attendees at each location will receive a free glow stick to use for the gathering. Saturday’s key events include the 43rd annual B-rry Scurry at noon. The event raises funds for Clinton Community College’s Paul B. Sharer Foundation to provide scholarships. The race’s after-party will be at Legend’s Sports Bar & Grill in Clinton.
The Mississippi River Eco-Tourism Center located in Camanche will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. More fun will be available at de Immigrant Windmill in Fulton, where the millers will have hot chocolate and host tours of the first floor of the windmill. All of these activities are free. Another Saturday hot spot will be the Eagle Point Lodge in Clinton. Free entrance to the lodge will allow people to enjoy a student art show, live music from local groups and the opportunity to view the Clinton County Walk of Fame. Students who would like to participate in the art show must get an art instructor or school teacher to register them. There is no cost. Details are at facebook.com/events/380925657851585. Saturday night’s main event is a 21 and older game of Ultra Mega Capture The Flag played in Heritage Canyon. “It will be in the dark, in the cold, in Heritage Canyon, and it’s going to be awesome,” Webster said. “I grew up playing this game at summer camp and I think adding these extreme conditions is the perfect way to bring the game back for all those Gen X and millennials out there who remember it from their childhood.” She said people who have never played the game are welcome. Details on the game and registering for it can be found on the Facebook event page. CrossFit Scorch is helping sponsor the
event by providing team coaches who will help each group develop a strategy and stay safe. A party bus shuttle will be available that evening with stops at Wild Rose Casino & Hotel, Legends Bar & Grill and Heritage Canyon. Sunday’s events include multiple sports events. “I am working with Tanner from Rival’s Sports to put together a sports tournament of some type,” Webster said. “And Parks & Rec is looking at what they can host in their facilities.” The community is invited to bring bicycles out for a Slip & Slide Bike Ride at noon at the Jensen Oil & Bicycle Station. “This is the perfect opportunity to try out all the crazy things you never try on your bike,” Parbs said. “I’ll be out there with my tricycle, too.” Sunday evening will conclude with a communitywide Candlelight Memorial Service. Details on the location are still being worked out and will be available online. nois’ higher education ecosystem and these funds will help institutions complement the work to close equity gaps outlined in each institution’s equity plan.” The funds were distributed to institutions using a two-part formula as outlined in the statute. The formula provided each qualifying institution a base grant based on the fall 2017 student enrollment numbers as reported to IBHE, and an FTE grant based on the fall 2022 student enrollment numbers as reported to IBHE.

The Kreiders have collected for the organization for seven years, this year raising $2,000 from their light display. They are thankful to all who drove by to view the lights and to those who donated. ROCK FALLS – Moore Tires, devastated by fire two weeks ago, has wasted no time finding a new location to rebuild in Rock Falls. The family-owned business, founded by Jeff and Angie Moore, entered into an agreement with the city’s Rock Falls Industrial Development Commission to buy 22 acres at 2400 First Ave./state Route 40, daughter and company Chief Administrative Officer Kayla (Moore) Heiar said in a news release. The sale price was not included in the release. A message left with City Administrator Robbin Blackert has not yet been returned. According to Whiteside County property tax records, the site, on the west side of Route 40 next to the Hennepin Canal at 21st Street, last sold on Dec. 22, 2015, for $475,000. The site previously was owned by the late businessman George Hallman, who built a truck garage, maintenance building and office and three mini storage buildings there. Moore Tires’ 11-bay shop at 2411 E. Rock Falls Road/U.S. Route 30 – the original location that opened in 1991 – was destroyed by fire Jan 16. The
cause of the fire, which appears to have begun about 4:25 a.m. in the first-floor shop area, is still under investigation. Local fire officials said no foul play is suspected. Firefighters from more than 20 agencies throughout the Sauk Valley either provided equipment or helped fight the blaze, which destroyed the 70,000-square-foot facility. No one was injured. The building was worth $409,000, property tax records show. That’s not including all the equipment and trucks that were lost. The Moores and their two children, Heiar and Kyle Moore, run the business, which has expanded to six locations, including their newest in the former Plaza Cinemas, 1315 N. Galena Ave. in Dixon, which opened Feb. 28, 2022. They also have locations in Mendota, Kewanee, Monmouth and Macomb. “We are very thankful for the tremendous support and cooperation of the city of Rock Falls and the IDC in helping us find a new home for our 50+ employees in Rock Falls. Special thanks to Mayor [Rod] Kleckler, City Administrator Robbin Blackert and Building Inspector Mark Searing for their work on expediting the transaction,” Jeff Moore said in the release.

professionals to call the manipulation of a hiatal hernia as quackery. Now we are rethinking that position. People generally understand the concept of a hernia as a portion of a bowel that has protruded through a weakened muscle. The hiatus is a particular hole in the diaphragm, the muscle we use for breathing. The hernia is the stomach pressing through the diaphragm into the food tube or esophagus. Also running through this area is the vagus nerve, being trapped or pressurized, which may have more of a role than previously thought. Symptoms of a hiatal hernia may include fatigue, constipation, nausea, vomiting, cough, intestinal gas, diarrhea and even left shoulder pain and pain or sensitivity at the waist. These are only a partial list of symptoms. We will focus on the vagus nerve’s impact with and from the hiatal hernia. The vagus nerve is impacted significantly with any negativities, such as fear, anger, jealousy or the like. This may contract the stomach or esophagus and cause an increase in
By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. The hiatal hernia may be shifting back to the notion that it is important to address an abnormality such as this one. Older physicians may recall the days in which much emphasis was made about a hiatal hernia. It was felt to be a source of major discomfort. Physicians had limited medicines to approach this ailment. Chiropractors often stepped in to offer their assistance. Dr. Ann Louise Gittleman has written and lectured extensively on this and other gut-related conditions. Along came a group of medicines to suppress the acid in the stomach and its kickback known as reflux. Tagamet worked on excess histamine. Zantac was another common medicine. Both of these are available over-the-counter under generic names. Later, medicines such as Prilosec and Nexium came along, which suppressed even more acid and were felt to be the next best thing. The popularity and seeming effectiveness of these medicines led some medical
the acid and the symptoms that go with it. The vagus nerve connects the gut and the brain. Other organs also are impacted by this nerve. The heart, lungs, large and small intestines, liver, pancreas, kidneys and even the genitals are included. Head injuries impact the vagus nerve and thus the gut as early as 30 minutes after an injury. Many unsolved sinus problems are connected to hiatal hernia structural problems that make the valve weaker at the lower end of the food tube or esophagus. Dietary adjustments may help. The biggest offender of this valve is sugar. Coffee, chocolate, mints and onions also may be a problem. One recommendation may sound a little extreme, but drinking a couple of glasses of lukewarm water and jumping up and down on a mini trampoline may help. Also helpful are breathing exercises such as panting like a dog for about one minute and then focusing on breathing from the belly and not the chest. With these breathing exercises, it’s best to exhale all the air completely out.

There are some supplements that may help such as non-GMO lecithin and phosphatidylcholine. Omega-3 eggs may be useful as well. The pancreatic digestive supplement lipase may be helpful. Some experts recommend ox bile. In a paradoxical fashion, adding hydrochloric acid supplements may be quite helpful. Pepin is another useful enzyme for digestion. Natural products such as slippery elm, dandelion and orange peel may be helpful. Raw apple cider vinegar or sauerkraut surprisingly may be helpful. Several specialists who deal with this condition also recommend Celtic Sea salt. Melatonin, often used for sleep, and Meadowsweet tea may be helpful. Finally, it is important to avoid the text posture position that many of us assume throughout the day. Also, it’s very important not to eat within three hours of going to bed. There are chiropractors and other specialists who are able to help maneuver the physical aspect of the hiatal hernia that may be worth checking out.

SPORTS ROUNDUP
Riverdale 78, East Dubuque 72:
Riverdale’s Jake Willems was definitely feeling it in the Rams’ game with East Dubuque at the Eric Ottens Shootout at Fulton High School on Saturday, Jan. 24. Willems, a senior, scored 41 points and iced the game on free throws in Riverdale’s 78-72 overtime win. The Rams led 62-59 with 2:36 left in the fourth quarter, but East Dubuque tied the game at 64-64 at the 58-second mark. Willems drove the lane on the next possession but was called for a offensive foul giving the ball back to East Dubuque with 43 seconds left in regulation. A 3-point attempt by East Dubuque to win the game rimmed out to force the 4-minute overtime period. East Dubuque scored first, but Dawson Preston tied it at 64-64 off a nifty pass by Willems. Willems gave the Rams a 67-66 lead with 1:22 to play when he made the front end of two-shot free throw. After a defensive stop, Willems again found himself behind the charity stripe and this time he made both attempts to give the Rams a 69-66 lead.
But East Dubuque drained a 3-pointer and the score was again knotted at 69-69 with 1:19 left. That’s when Willems’ OT gear kicked in, first draining a trey to make it 72-69 at the 42-second mark and then making good on his remaining free throws to ice the game for the Rams. Willems made four treys on the night and was 9-for-11 in free throws. Brody Clark followed with 14 points and Peterson had 11 on the night. Also scoring for the Rams were Paxton Kiddoo with seven, Jackson Tegeler with three and Aris Morgan with two. South Beloit 48, Fulton 47: The Steamers had a shot at sending the game into a second overtime in the final game at the Eric Ottens Shootout on Saturday, Jan. 27, but fell one point short. Before a packed house on its home court, Fulton played the SoBos down to the wire in overtime and missed an open two-pointer as time expired. Baylen Damhoff led Fulton with 23 points, followed by Landen Leu with 13. Jimmy Crimmins added eight points and Trevor Tiesman had three in the loss.

Erie 62, West Carroll 23: The Panthers scored early and often in their win over the Thunder at the Eric Ottens Shootout on Saturday, Jan. 27. Jeremiah Kochevar led the Panthers with 27 points including four treys.
Connor Keegan scored 15 points. Keegan Winckler had 12. Joe Papineau and Evan Steimle had thee points each and Colin Ashdown added two points. See ROUNDUP, Page 13
