treynolds@shawmedia.com PRINCETON – When it comes down to the final few steps of the postseason, it’s survive and advance. For nine area wrestlers, they did just that at Saturday’s Class 1A Princeton Sectional, and achieved their season-long goal of qualifying for the IHSA state tournament. Led by sectional champions Collin Altensey of Riverdale and Kayden White of Morrison, those nine locals will be wrestling at State Farm Center in Champaign this week. Riverdale’s Brock Smith and Alex Watson both placed second, while Fulton’s Zane Pannell and Erie-Prophetstown’s Wyatt Goossens both took third. His Panther teammates Jase Grunder and Elijah Friedrichsen finished fourth, as did Morrison’s Nate Schaefer. White took care of business in the title bout at 182, notching an early takedown against Sandwich’s Alex Alfaro, then adding a few more en route to an 11-2 major decision. “I was just confident in my offense. Stillman Valley’s Jack Seacrist, limiting his opponent’s chances to score and pulling out a 4-2 decision. “I knew he liked to throw, so I was just planning on tying up his hands and getting in my low shots, and that’s what I did,” Altensey said. “Then I kind of stalled out in the third, but now I know what he does and I’ll just learn from it for state. I’m sure I’ll see him at state.” It’s Altensey’s second sectional title, and the junior was still trying to wrap his thoughts around it as he received his medal. “It’ll probably sink in soon, but it’s pretty cool,” he said. “I won it freshman year, so I knew it was really important then. It feels good to be on top now.” Rams teammate Brock Smith battled through the 132-pound title bout against Dakota’s TJ Silva, as the two went back and forth until the very end. Silva pulled out a 9-8 victory, but the trip to state was a good end to a tough week for Smith. “I was very sick this week and didn’t go to school a couple of days.
