If plans being advanced by the Fulton Flood Control District continue to develop favorably, it may be possible to ask for bids on Fulton’s long-term flood control system by early next year. Attorney Robert Potter, who represents the flood district, is preparing petitions

to be circulated asking for the annexation of several small additional tracts of land to the flood district. Annexation of these areas is the next step planned by the flood district and when done, the district will proceed with plans for an election to ask approval of a bond issue for about $600,000 to help pay the non-federal share of the $10 million flood project.

Player of the Week for basketball was Dale Houzenga, a 6-foot-1 junior who has been a member of Fulton basketball teams all three years of high school. Houzenga has played in six varsity games and saw a lot of action in the JV schedule this season. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Houzenga.

River Bend School Board members have been presented with facts and figures on how to overcome the more than $500,000 shortfall. The district has been forced to make cuts with falling enrollment and changes in tax rates all resulting in fewer dollars for the district. The board, having studied all plans and proposals to reduce the 2006 school year deficit, called for a vote on a school closing. The board voted 6-1 to close the Albany school.

Mrs. Driscoll’s fifth grade class at Albany Grade School has created place mats for The Mississippi Cafe. Students did research and used computer skills to create their own place mat design. Pictures were either scanned or copied and pasted from files or the internet.

Let’s discuss medication for weight loss

Obtaining and maintaining ideal weight is one of the cornerstones of health outcomes. The connections with being overweight are well-known, including all aspects of metabolic disturbances. These are measures such as hypertension, diabetes, fatty liver and lipid disturbances. In particular, the latter category includes elevated triglycerides as a definite marker for disease.

Everyone knows lifestyle is the first measure of recommendation and engagement. Proper nutrition and physical activity are good for health and well-being irrespective of any weight loss.

That having been said, many people see additional benefit from prescription medication. This is not to say that some

natural products are not helpful with weight management, but rather that we have limited data on such agents.

The following is from the Journal of the American Medical Association. The first drug it mentions is Orlistat, which is taken three times a day with a meal. This leads to about 5% of weight loss with side effects of oily vehicle spotting and some fecal or bowel movement urgency.

The next category is the stimulant combination of Phentermine with Topi-

The next combination is Naltrexone with Bupropion. This is taken twice daily with the recommendation that behavior therapy be part of the program. The weight loss again is close to 10% with side effects of nausea, constipation, headache, vomiting, dizziness, dry mouth and insomnia.

The final category includes a group of medication in the GLP 1 class. This includes Liraglutide, Semaglutide and Tirzepatide. The first agent is a daily

There also are other weekly injections associated with weight loss and improvement in metabolic syndrome. Weight loss may be anywhere from 5% to 20% of body weight. Side effects generally are intestinal with nausea, constipation, headache, vomiting, dizziness, insomnia and dry mouth also among the side effects.

Benefits include less heart attacks and less strokes and more longevity. No matter what route one chooses, it is important to follow a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and physical activity. Weight loss that approaches anorexia cannot be considered healthy.

Sauk Valley Community College president doesn’t expect Trump administration’s DEI ultimatum to affect federal funding

DIXON – Despite the Trump administration’s recent ultimatum giving the nation’s schools and universities two weeks to end diversity initiatives or risk losing federal funding, Sauk Valley Community College President Dave Hellmich is not panicking.

The Department of Education issued a memo Feb. 15 demanding schools stop using “racial preferences” as a factor in financial aid, hiring, admissions, scholarships, administrative support and other areas, effectively ending any practice that treats students or workers differently because of their race.

In a prepared statement Sauk Valley Community College Vice President of Academics and Student Services Jon Mandrell shared with Shaw Local, Hellmich said he could “see no reason” why the school’s federal funding should be “jeopardized.”

Although the Sauk Valley Commu -

nity College website’s Diversity page was unavailable with a 404 notification at the time this article was written,

Mandrell said the page “was not a dedicated diversity page, but one of our committee’s, which is restructuring to focus

our efforts on access and inclusion of all students.”

“My leadership team and I are monitoring the recent federal directives closely and are confident the college’s mission, vision, values, policies and actions are consistent with the nondiscrimination obligations specified in these directives,” Hellmich said in the statement.

“Sauk Valley Community College is a welcoming and responsive institution that strives to ensure all learners have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed in their academic and career goals. While federal funds account for a lesser percentage of Sauk’s revenues than do local taxes and tuition, federal funds are important in helping us maintain accessible education, student support services and workforce development programs that benefit our entire community. I see no reason why this federal funding should be jeopardized because of our mission, vision, values, policies and actions.”

Riverdale had two Class 1A champions on Saturday at the state meet in Champaign.

Dean Wainwright, a junior, and Blake Smith, a senior, brought home titles in their respective weight divisions.

Wainwright was the champion at 137 pounds with a 10-5 decision over Deca-

tur-Unity Christian’s Garrett VerHeecke. Wainwright ended the season with a 47-2 record.

Wainwright’s path to the title started with a 9-4 decision over Tyler Huchel of Fithian-Oakwood. In the quarterfinals, Wainwright had a 15-4 major decision over Zach Bryant of Petersburg-Porta and in the semifinals he posted an 8-4 decision over Roxana’s Brandon Green Jr.

Riverdale rolls past Oregon to win regional title

PROPHETSTOWN – Riverdale wasted little time in capturing the Class 2A regional title in Prophetstown on Feb. 20. The Rams jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter against Oregon en route to a 47-25 win.

The Rams (21-9) led 13-4 after the first quarter and 25-6 at halftime to advance to face Stillman Valley at the Rock Falls Sectional on Tuesday.

Cayleigh Hungate led the Rams with 11 points, followed by Amarah Coleman with 10, Molly Skahill with nine and Katie Cox with eight.

Oregon (16-16) was led by junior Sarah Eckardt’s 10 points. Classmate Aniyah Sarver scored eight.

Riverdale’s Jay Hatch, a Hall of Fame coach with Alleman who also took the Rams to state in 2020, was proud of his team and its effort.

“We got off to a good start tonight,

which was very helpful,” Hatch said. “I thought we did a good job of just maintaining it. I thought we did a pretty good job of trying to take away what we thought they wanted to do.”

First-year Oregon coach and former assistant Angela Reynolds was proud of her team after it reached its first regional title game in 11 years. The Hawks won nine more games than last season. Reynolds played on the team that last won a regional title in 2014.

“We had an outstanding season this year and although tonight wasn’t the outcome we had hoped for, we still have so much to be proud of,” Reynolds said. “Riverdale played a great game and we had a slower start and didn’t get some of our shots to fall. Aside from that, our girls brought their energy and hard work ethic and battled as hard as they could. Above all, our girls played their hearts out and that’s all a coach can ever ask for.”

Smith was the 157-pound champion with a 10-9 decision over Sterling Newman’s Briar Ivey. Smith ended the season with a 36-1 record.

Smith started his trek to the championship with an 11-1 major decision over Braxton Kieffer of Litchfield. In the quarterfinals, Smith pinned Kelton Graden of Stanford-Olympia at 1:41 and in the semifinals he won by major decision over Erie-Prophetstown’s Wyatt Goossens.

Goossens, a senior, took third place with a pin over Chasen Kazmierczak of Wheaton Academy at 2:25.

Goossens advanced to the thirdplace match when he pinned Justin Zimmerman of Petersburg-Porta in the wrestlebacks. Goossens started the tournament with a 4-2 decision over Owen McGinnis of Toledo-Cumberland and a 13-0 major decision over Brock Owens of LeRoy.

At 106 pounds, Morrison’s Cael Wright, a freshman, won his first match with a pin over Coal City’s Jason Piatak, but then lost an 11-5 decision to Steven Uden of Fithian-Oakwood before winning by major decision over Indigo Berg of Chicago-Hope Academy.

Wren is all smiles as she receives a standing ovation after her performance with the Clinton Symphony Orchestra during the Family Concert on Feb. 23 in the Morrison High School auditorium. Wren is presented to the audience by Brian Dollinger, the symphony’s music director and conductor.

Sterling High School saxophonist plays with symphony at Family Concert in Morrison

MORRISON – Rileigh Wren shook off the nerves Sunday when she decided to dance to the music of the Clinton Symphony Orchestra’s opening piece as she waited backstage to make her debut at the Family Concert in Morrison.

“I was very nervous,” the 18-year-old senior at Sterling High School said. “I just started dancing to the music beforehand and walked out onto the stage.”

The stage was Morrison High School’s auditorium where Wren joined the symphony to perform “Concerto for Alto Saxophone” by English composer Ronald Binge.

Wren was chosen by audition for the annual Young Artist award and played two of three movements of the concerto, accompanied by the orchestra.

She participates in band, orchestra and chorus at Sterling High School and has been a member of All-District and All-State bands. She studies saxophone

with Nicole Oberg of Sterling and plans to major in music education in college.

On Sunday, two of Wren’s schoolmates, Kaitlyn Moore and Claire Robers, presented her with flowers after her performance.

“She came in very well prepared,” said Brian Dollinger, the symphony’s music director and conductor for Sunday’s concert. “I saw her moving a little bit. It was nice to see her enjoying the musicality of the moment. These concerts are very special for young artists to be part of. I really like to see young musicians when they come out on the stage after performing with their big smiles.”

Dollinger hopes more young musicians seek out information about the symphony.

Sunday’s concert was the fifth performance of the Clinton Symphony Orchestra’s 71st concert season. Remaining events include a performance of Mozart’s “Requiem” with Clinton’s RiverChor in April. For more information visit www.clintonsymphony.org.
