Sandrockgrewupinthe villageofTampico,afewdoors awayfromReagan’sBirthplace andMuseum.Heisajuniorat EurekaCollege,Reagan’salma mater,andwasawardedtheRonaldReaganFellowScholarship, foundedbythepresident.Sandrock’smajorsarehistory,politicalscience,pre-law,musicand vocalperformance.Heworksas theleadinternoftheRonaldReaganSocietyunderthecollege’s VicePresidentofAdvancement oftheReaganLegacy.

Firefighters get hands-on training at Erie Fire Station

FirefighterBasicAcademystudents tookpartinaverticalventilationexerciseattheErieFireStationonTuesday,March7, with thesoundsofpower toolsandhammersheardthroughout theevening.Verticalventilationis a high-riskoperationthatrequires a crewoftwoorthreefirefightersladderingtheroofandmakingsureit’s soundwhileobservingtherooffor signsofstructuralfailure.

Firefightersmustbeproficientin verticalventilationoperationfor structuralfirefighting,IllinoisFire ServiceInstitute(IFSI)instructor JaredBarbersaid,andcompletingthe operationisarequirementforstate certification.TheErieFireProtection Districtstoresaroofpropsimulator built at4/12 pitchtosimulatetheaverageresidentialroof,constructedseveralyearsagosinceit’shardtofind housestocut holesinto.

Thestudentstookturnscuttingthe holeintheroofpropduringthetrainingexercise.Thestandardsizeholeis 4feetby4feetandthecrewneedsto havethetoolstoknockoutthesub-ceilingoncetheycutthroughthe roof, Barbersaid.Thestudentshadtouse alltherequiredtools whileconducting theoperationontheprop:aroofladder thathooksonthepeakofaroofline, whichallowscrews a placetowalkand stagetools;gas poweredandnewelectricpoweredchainsaws;pickhead axesforsoundingtheroofandtoassist withcuttingifneeded; andpikepoles for knockingdownthesub ceiling.

“Whatmakesthissuchahigh-risk operation,besidesbeingonaroofin cumbersomegearandheavyequipment,isfindingthebestspottocutthe ventilationasclosetotheseatofthe fireaspossible,”Barber said.“The risk of thefiredamagingandcausingstructuralfailureisveryreal.Thecloserto

theseatofthefiretheholeiscut,the chancesthefirecouldalreadycause damage.”

Verticalventilationknowledgeis necessaryinfirefightingefforts. Whenconductedcorrectly,itcan slowthespreadoffireandimprove visibilityconditionsinthestructure.

Febrile seizures in young children are discussed

Febrileseizuresareseizures thatoccurinyoungchildrenthat are causedbyafever.Whilethey maybefrightening,theyrarelyare dangerous.Theydonotcause braindamageandyourchildcannotswallowtheirtongueduring a seizure.Thevastmajoritylast a fewminutesandgoawayontheir own.Mostchildrenwithafebrile seizurewillnotneedtobehospitalized.

Ifyourchildexperiencesaseizure,putthemontheirsidesothey don’tchoke ontheir saliva and don’tputanythingintheirmouth.

Donotrefrainyourchild’s movementduringtheseizureand removeobjectsthatmayinjure themfromtheirpath.

Whiletheseizuresmaybe alarming,itisimportantto

remaincalm.Timingwithyour watchmaybehelpfulbecauseit willgiveyousomething elsetodo whilealsoreassuringyouthatthe processgenerallywilllastonly minutes.Intherareoccasionit exceeds10minutes,call911.After theseizurehasstopped,callyour doctor.Theymaywishtoseeyour childtoseeifthereissomecause forthefever.Dependingonthe circumstances,brainwavetests orothertestsforthebrainoccasionallyareordered.

Parentsfrequentlyareconcernedthat theirchildmayhave anotherseizure.About25%to30% ofinfantswillhaveanotherseizure,whilethevastmajoritywill not.Theriskisslightlyincreasedif yourchildisyoungerthan18 months,thereisafamilyhistoryof febrile seizuresorifthefeverwas notparticularlyhighwhenthesei-

zureoccurred.

Cantheseseizuresbeprevented?Theanswerismaybewith medicine.Studiesshowsome effectsforsomeinfants.Manydoctorsandparentsbelievetheside effectsfromthemedicineareworse thanthechildhavinganother febrileseizure.Sometimeschildrenwillhaveanother seizure evenwhileonmedicine.

Oneortwofebrileseizuresdoes notmeanyourchildwillhaveepilepsy.In fact,there is more than a 95% chancethatyourchildwill nothaveepilepsy andthereisno evidencethattreatingyourchild withmedicinewillpreventepilepsy.Theincidenceofepilepsyis slightlyhigherinchildrenwith febrileseizures,particularlythose whohaverecurrentseizures, but stillfairlylow,intheneighborhoodof2%to 4%.

That’swhatAlexanderOttensdidin the13th roundtocapturethe Lee-Ogle-WhitesideRegionalSpelling BeeonThursdayatWiltzAuditorium atDixonHighSchool.

Butifyouaskhim,thewordhe encounteredthatbestdescribesthe momentwashissecond-rounder, “astounding.”

“I’mprettyastounded,”hesaid.

Ottens isaneighthgraderwho attendsPLTMiddleSchoolandlivesin ruralLyndonwithhisparentsAshley andChadOttens.

Ottensplayssports,includingbaseball,basketballandfootball.When askedifhe’sthebestspelleronthe defensiveline, hesmiledbroadly. “Probably,”hesaid.

Nowhe’squalifiedfortheScripps National Spelling Bee,whichbegins May28attheGaylordNationalResort andConventionCenterinNational Harbor,Maryland.Thepreliminary roundwillbeMay30andthefinalswill beJune1.

Ottensknockeddown“jarl,”which isatypeofNorsechieftainthathesaid heknewfromplayingtheonlinegame TotallyAccurateBattleSimulator.

Ottenshadbeenamethodical,purposefulspellerformostofthecompetition,butthenextroundwith “astringent”hezippedthroughtheletters. A leapoffaithgoingsoquickly?

“Iwas,like,stillalittlebitunsure, soIjustwentwithit,”hesaid.

TomWadsworth,whowas serving

aspresenterforthe41styear,said Ottenswasclearlyacompetitorwho drilledonthewordlists.

“Hestudied.Thatwas clear,”said Wadsworth,whoprefacedhisintroductionbysaying howdifficultthis year’swordslistwas.“TheNo.1determinantofkidsthatdowellisstudy.”

Afterthecompetition,Ottens posed foraphotowithquizbowlteammate TaylorRobshawofErieMiddleSchool. Robshawwasmakingherfourth appearanceintheregionalbeeand Ottenssaidheconsideredheracontenderfromtheoutset.

Robshawlasteduntilthefourth round–leavingon“rehearsal”–when theLevel2wordskickedinandthe fieldwastrimmedbyfour.

Bythefifthround,anotherfourcontestantsweregone.Onemorebowed outinthesixth.Theseventh-round cullingwasparticularlytough,seeing fourdepart.

ThemiddleroundseliminatedOregonElementary’sLiaTran,asixth graderinpinkboots,matchingtulle skirtandstuffedanimalpursewhowas unofficiallythemostpolitecontestant, quietlysaying“thankyou”tothepresenteraftereveryround.Sheslipped throughon“cockles”inthefourth roundevenafterhavingtogobackand restarttheword,atoughtrick.Butthe nextround,shesteppedouton“equinox.”

Schmidtstayedalivebyspelling “platoon,”“ordinance”and“stridency”beforerunningafoulof“quiddity.”Baileystayedinthehuntby spelling“juvenilia,”“statuesque”and “tapioca.”

Itwasayearinwhichtheboysdid wellandbrokethenear-stranglehold girlshavehadonthechampionship title,Wadsworthsaid.Inthepast24 years,girlshavewon21titles,includ-

ing last year by Namaste Rose and 2021 and2020championKathleenKeesey.

Thursday’sevent had been postponed fromFeb.16, when a winter storm the day before prompted classes to be called off across the region. That meant a delay of 22 days since Wadsworth had conducted the 90-minute rehearsal with the contestants – a tradition that’s meant to promote decorum and alleviatenervous tensionon thebigstage.

“I was concerned that they might have forgotten all the stuff we went through,”Wadsworth said.“We’re just trying to get them to lose the jitters, get comfortable up there under the lights, coming up to the microphone and the big sound system and all that stuff. But theydidwell.”

Historic Port Byron church transformed into StradaComm headquarters

TheformerPortByronCongregationalChurchat200S.HighSt.inPort Byronisslowlytakingshapeasthe newheadquartersforStradaCommunications,alocalfiberopticinternet companyfoundedin2017.

Theypurchasedthebuildinginthe fallof2021andhavebeenmaking extensiveupgradessince,withoffice staffrecentlyrelocatingtothenew location.

Thechurchwasfoundedin1828and thecongregation’sbrickandstone buildingwascompletedin1854. Thoughthebuildinghasstoodthetest oftime,churchmembersdecidedto sellitin2020afterdwindlingmembershipandexpensivemaintenancecosts.

Luckily,thenewownerswantedto keepthehistoricalbuildingalive,with localcontractorsbroughtintorenovatetheoldchurchfromtheground up.Anoutdoorpressurewash removed thestuccotorevealafacade ofbrownbricksandlimestone.All newfootingswerepouredinside,fillingthedirtfloorstillvisibleinspots whileensuringtheintegrityofthe building.Theinsidewasstrippedbare, thoughhistoricportionssuchastimbers,beamsandthelimestonefoundationwereincorporatedintothesleek newdesign.

“Aconsiderableamountofmoney hasbeenspenttobringthechurch backuptocodeandfixalltheoriginal stoneandwoodworkwithintomake sureitcanlastanother150years,” StradaCommCEOScottSearlsaidof thenewofficespace.

They’restill debatingonhowto bestusetheupperroom,suchas a meetingspaceoranareatoteachcustomersaboutfiberopticinternetservicesandstreamingoptions.There’s

alsoasurprisethatwillberevealed whencompleted,hesaid.

Thegroundlevelfunctions as administrativeofficesforthegrowing company,withpartitionedofficesand windowviewsof IllinoisRoute84and theMississippiRiver.Thebuilding’s restroomandkitchenareas,addedto thebackofthebuildinginthe1950s, havebeenmodernized.

To-dolistitemsincludeinstallinga newroof,awning,signageandupstairs

windows, which havebeenspecially ordered.The outsideneeds another tuckpointandseal,andanindoor staircaseneedstobebuilt.Theparkinglotwillberepaved,andthesteeple bellwillbebroughtdownandeither displayedordonatedtoanorganizationinPortByron.

Whileofficestaffhavemovedin, thecompanystillisworkingonafew additionalimprovementsbefore hostingamore official unveiling.StradaCommhasabout 30employees,with sixtoeightworkingintheofficedaily.

Lastyear,itwasaregionalsemifinallosstoAquin.OnMarch3,itwasa sectionalfinallosstoScalesMound.

Bothtimes,theSteamersfelttheir seasonendedtoosoon.Despitethat, thelasttwoseasonshavebeensomeof thebestbasketballinFultoninquite sometime.

Lastyear’ssquadsetasingle-season recordwith29wins.Thisyear,the Steamersbecamethefifthteaminprogramhistorytoreach26wins. They alsowontheirsecondregionaltitle since2001andplayedinasectional finalforthefirsttimesincethe2001 team.

The55winsarethemosteverin a two-season spanforFulton,eclipsing the52winsfromtheback-to-back 26-winseasonsin1999-2000and2000-01.

“It’sfeltgreattobeapartofthis, especiallylastseasonasasophomore.I wasyoung,buttheytookmeinand I reallyenjoyedit,”juniorforward BaylenDamhoffsaid.“Wehad29wins, andtherewasnothinglikeitplaying forthatteam.Unfortunately,theseasonendedsoonerthanwethoughtit would.Thisyear,samething.

“Ihadacloserbondwiththeseniors thisyear,sowejustworkedwitheach other.We’retogetherallthetime,soour bondisamazingwhenwegetonthe courttogether.Wejustdowhatwedo.”

DamhoffandseniorEthanPrice werethe1-2 punchthatmadethe Steamersgo.TheyledFultoninscoringinjustabouteverygamethisseasonandworkedtogethersowellthatat timestheybecameanextensionofeach otheronthecourt.

“Thedynamicduothatwe kindof hadgoingwasagoodwayforustobe leadersout there,”Pricesaid.“Abig partofoursuccesswasmeandBaylen werebigandtall,andweworkedhard inthesummer.Wehadalotofour points,buteverybodyonthisteam workedtogether.

“The teamis suchafamily,and I justreallyenjoyedbeingaroundthese guys.They’resofun.Lastyear,Iloved beingaroundthoseguys,too.Just beingapartoftheteamisgreat–winningtogether, losingtogether,nomatterwhat,it’sgreattobeplayingwith theseguys.”

PriceandDamhoffwerethekeycogs returningfromlastyear’steam,which wasledbyseniorsBrockMason,Ian Wiebenga,JacobJonesandPatrick Lower.Pricecreditedthatgroupofleaderswithbeing themainreasonwhyhe

and Damhoff were able to have success stepping intothat rolethis season.

“Those guys set a great example,” Price said. “There were a lot of leaders on that teamandI looked up to those guysalot.”

Fulton coach RJ Coffey, who was a sophomoreon the 2001sectionalfinalist, said the tone set by senior leaders is the reason why Fulton has had so muchsuccessinrecentseasons.

“That’s how you keep a program strong is when you lose good, quality kids–whichwe’vedone–andyou’ve gotguysthatstepupandtheydon’t missabeat,”Coffeysaid.“Theyjust steprightintothat,whetherit’sthat leadershiproleorgettingguysinthe gymearlyinthemorning.Thisgroup again,justlikelastyear,theydoallthe littlethingstomakeaprogramstrong.

SinceCoffeyreturnedandtookover asheadcoachathisalmamaterin 2013-14,theSteamershavewon18or moregamesseventimesandposted single-digitlossesfourtimes,including each ofthelastthreeseasons.He’sled

Fulton to a pair of regional titles – they also won one in 2020 – and NUIC South titles (with a 23-1 record) in each of their first two seasons in the conference.

He’s quick to deflect credit to his players and said their work ethic the last couple of seasons has been the biggestkeytotheSteamers’success.

Price and Damhoff couldn’t agree more.

“I think a lot of it was just from hard work, even this summer, a few of us cominginandworking,thenthroughouttheseasonmeandBaylengetting earlymorningworkoutswithcoach Coffeyallthetime,”Price said.“He reallypushedall ofusthroughoutthe season,nomatterhowlowwegot.It’s justalotofhardwork,cominginmorningsandlateatnight, just gettinglots ofshotsupandpracticing,that’sall.”

Notonlydiditmakethembetter players, Damhoffcreditedthose workoutswithhelpingtheSteamersplay a moreconfidentbrandofbasketball.As the physicalskillsimproved,the players’trustinthemselvesandone anotheralsogrew.

“Wegetalotofconfidencejustbeing togetherallthetime,pushingeach otherhard.Coffeypushesushard,too, andalwaystellsustobeconfidentand nevergetdownonourselves.Allof thathelpswithourconfidence,”Damhoffsaid.“Weusuallyjustcomeinall thetimeinthemorningsandgetshots up.Wejustworkhardtogether,andat

practicepusheach otherreallywell andtrytomakeourteamthe bestwe can.”

It’scertainlyworkedthelastcouple ofseasons,andCoffeysaidthekeyis everyplayerontherosterputtingforth theirbestefforteveryday–fromthe starterstotheguysattheendofthe bench.

“We’vegotatonofqualityguysthat have putalotoftime,energy andeffort intohelpingthisprogramgrowandget better.ObviouslyBaylenandEthanat thetop.Thoseguysdosomuchonboth endsandthey’rejustphenomenalbasketballplayers.Butevenourroleplayersandtheguysthatdon’tgetasmuch oftheaccolades,they’reinpractice, they’regrinding,they’reworking,”Coffeysaid.“Ipushtheseguyshard–inthe summer,inpractice–andwetrytoput ascheduletogetherthatwouldprepare usformakinghopefullyarunlikethis, andourguysjustkept coming.”
