Pool reopens

After being closed March 6 to be emptied, painted, repaired and filled upagain, the ProphetstownPark District swimmingpool reopened to the public on Monday, April 17 Staff were monitoring the water temperature, chemicalbalances and pH levels over the weekend before determining that it wasready for swimmers. Park district staff appreciate the community’s patience during the process, which took a few more weeks than planned. Workon the men’s locker roomand showerarea has now started, so therewill be some changes while that work is completed. Citizens rally after word that Erie Family Clinic will close

Almost50citizensandhealthcarepatientsrallied togetherduringapeacefuldemonstrationattheGenesisHealthGroup,ErieFamilyCliniconThursday, April13,afterlearningthatit’ssettocloseJune16. RuthFiedler-EatonisthenursepractitioneratErie’s onlyhealthcarefacility,andtheclinicservespatients fromthreecounties.

“Ifthisclosurehappens,itwilldevastateoursmall ruralcommunities,”saidTeresaBurnettKeag,who organizedThursday’sdemonstration.“Ourgoalisto keepthisclinicopen,butweknowit’slikeDavidand Goliathinthecorporateworld.Wewantthecommunitytobeabletocomehereforhealthcare.Butfor ruralhealthcarepatients,it’saboutthemoney.”

ShesaidpatientscomefromErie,Prophetstown, Lyndon,PortByron,Morrison,Albany,Cordova, Chadwick,Fulton,Savanna,HillsdaleandMoline,as wellasClinton,Iowa.Theclinic’spatientsreceived lettersinthemailinformingthemoftheupcoming closure.

Thedemonstratorsheldupsignsandchanted “Saveourclinic”atThursday’srally. BurnettKeag thankedthemforcomingoutto“letRuthandthe clinicstaffknowwhattheymeantous.Ruthadvocatesforus,sowe’retryingtobehervoicesinceshe can’tspeak.”

DawnTubbsfromstateSen.WinStoller’soffice alsowasinattendance,aswellaslocalmediaoutlets. Beforethedemonstration,Genesisinformedmedia outletsthattheywerenotallowedontheproperty.

OneofthedemonstratorswasDavidRussellof Erie,whoexpressedconcernaboutadditionaltravel shouldthe clinicclose.Besidesthe70to80miles roundtripifpatientsgotoEastMolineorBettendorf, there’salsoconcernsaboutparkingandwalking, whichwillbeproblematicforseniors.

AstatementfromGenesisread:“GenesisHealth Group,Erieclinicwillclose,effectiveJune16,2023. Likeallhealthcaresystemsacrossthecountry,Genesis has been impactedbytheCOVID-19pandemic, escalatingcostsandstaffshortagesthathavecaused

unprecedentedfinancialpressures.Wemustaddress theseeconomicrealitiesandrealign resources sowe cancontinuetofulfillourmissiontoservethehealth careneedsinourcommunities.Withrisingcostsoutpacingreimbursement,wehadtomakethedifficult decisiononwhatservicesweprovideandthelocationsofthoseservices.Weareabletocontinuecare forallpatientsandwillworkcloselywiththemto transfertheircaretoanotherlocation.”

Thursday’srallywasheldduringthelunchhour andwasplannedwithafewdays’notice.Burnett Keagsaidanotherrallymaybeheldifshedoesn’t receivearesponsefromGenesis,thoughthenextone willbetimedtoaccommodatethoseunabletoattend duringtheday.Shealsohopestoseerepresentatives fromlocalbusinesses,sincetheclosuremayaffect them.Sheencouragedcitizenstocontributeto a phone/letter/emailcampaignbycontactingtheir representativesandindividualsadvocatingforrural health.

De Immigrant Windmill set in mourning

De ImmigrantWindmillcurrentlyissetinmourningposition tohonortwovolunteermillerswhopassedawayin2022.

NorrisHurlbutpassedawayonJan.11andClarence “Clink” KettlerpassedawayonDec.27.Both mencontributedcountless hourstothewindmill,fromleadingtourstoworkingondisplays tocarpentrytogeneralupkeeponthewindmill.Clinkwasoneof theoriginalvolunteermillerswhenitwasfirstdedicatedatthe DutchDaysFestivalin2000.

Thesailsofthewindmillsnormallyarepositionedstraightup anddown,butinmourning.thesailsaretippedpastvertically. MillerRickDaehlersaidtherearetraditionalpositionstheDutch usetomarkoccasions,fromdeathstobirthstomarriage.Even thoughthetwomenpassedawaylastyear,themillerswantedto honorthemduringthespringseasonasafittingremembranceof theircontributionstotheFultoncommunity.
