FNB’s Dan Nafziger celebrates retirement

Dan Nafziger graduated from Eureka College in 1975 and worked for fiveyears at another bankbeforejoining Farmers National Bank in Prophetstown in 1981 He started as an agriculture lender and retiredfrom the bank as executive vice president of lendingin 2014 In 1996, he became a member of the bankandholding company board of directorsand retired this month after 27 years onboth boards. Nafziger’s combined 42 years of service to the bank recently was celebrated at Prophet Hills Country Club with more than 100 people inattendance. In full retirement, he plans to continue his hobbies of huntingand golf.

Students aspiring to be teachers get inside look

Beingdedicatedtothepotentialof every studentmustbefoundational for allteachers,LindseyJensensaidduring thekeynoteaddressforthePathways EducationSymposiumheldFridayat SaukValleyCommunityCollege.

“Ifyoudon’tbelieveineverysingle personwhowalksintoyour classroom, you’renotgoingtomake itinthisprofession,”shesaid.

JensenistheIllinoiscoordinatorfor EducatorsRising,anarmofPhiDelta KappaInternational,thatpromotesavenuesforyoungpeopleinterestedin becomingeducators.Shealsoisthe earlycareerdevelopmentdirectorfor theIllinoisEducation Association.

Jensenwas the 2018IllinoisTeacher oftheYearasaseniorEnglishinstructor atDwightHighSchool.Shehasnearly20 yearsofclassroomexperienceandadoctorateinteaching and learning.

“I’mstandingheretalkingtoallof youaboutmyloveofthisprofession,” Jensensaid.“Anditisadeep,deeplove.”

Heraudiencewas90highschoolstudentsand30educationprofessionals fromadozenparticipatingdistricts withinRegionalOfficeofEducation 47, whichservesLee,OgleandWhiteside counties.

Thiswasthesecondannualsymposiumjointly organizedbytheregional officeinpartnershipwithSVCC.The Pathwaysprogramisdesignedtopromotevocationalopportunitiesthatgraduatingseniorscangainascertification fortheirhighschooldiploma.Pathways falls underthedirectionoftheIllinois StateBoardofEducation’ssectionfor careerandtechnicaleducationand innovation.

“We’rehoping wecaninspirethem,” saidChandaMcDonnell,Pathwaysnavigator.

Beyondthefieldof education,ROE47 planstoexpanditsPathwaysofferings byaddingprogramsinhealthandscience,agricultureandmanufacturing, basedoninputfrombusinessandcommunity leaders,saidStaceyDinges,also aPathways navigator.

ButROE47hasfromthe outset focusedonpromotingteachingas a careergiventheshortageofinstructors ingradesK-12.TheKellyEducation Reportexpectsthenation’steacher shortfalltobe520,200by2025.Thestate boardofeducationreported5,301positionswentunfulfilledacrossIllinoisin thecurrentschool year.

Studentswhoparticipateintheprogramcangainclassroomexperience –effectivelyshadowingandassisting a teacher–forsixweeksduringtheir senioryear.

Aportionofthesymposiumalsowas dedicatedtorecognizingthosesenior classstudentswhoearnedtheirdiploma

endorsementsin education.

McDonnell saidthepracticalexperienceforstudentsisinvaluable. Shetells the storyofoneparticipantinthe endorsementprocesswhowas placedin athird-gradeclassroomwholearned quicklyitwasabadmatchforher.She shiftedtobeing inabandclassroomand lovedit. Nowshe’sheadedtocollege knowingexactlywhattypeofteaching jobsheshouldpursue,makingtheshift nowinstead oflater,whenitwouldbe costlier.“Thisiswhatit’sallabout,” McDonnell said.

Noteveryoneattendingthesymposiumaregraduating seniors.Many are likesophomoreEliseRichardsof MorrisonHighSchool,whois there toexplore career optionsandmeetcollegereps.

“NotsurewhatI’mgoing todoyet,” Richardssaid. “What’sgoodformeto get into?Iwanttolearnaboutdifferent pathsI couldconsider.”

RepresentativesfromIllinoisState University,NorthernIllinois University, ChicagoStateUniversity,RockfordUniversity,WesternIllinoisUniversityand SVCCwereonhandtoshowcasetheir educationdegree programs.

JanisJonesofSVCCsaidcolleges are gettingseriousabout recruitingteachers.Inmanyinstancesthey’vestreamlinedtheadmissionsprocessandstarted “puttinginsupports”socollegestudents canbesuccessful.Thereismoreoutreach to nontraditionalstudents. She citedasanexampleIllinoisStateUniversity’seffortstogetearlychildhoodlicensureforparaprofessionalsthrough online courses.

Duringtheseminar,studentsgot to attend 25-minutebreakoutsessionswith teacherswhospecializeinspecialeducation,elementaryeducation,counseling, earlychildhoodinstruction,middle schoolandhigh schoolsubjects,coachingandathleticsandtheburgeoning field ofclassroom technology.

Duringabreakout sessiononelemen-

tary education, teacher ChelseaStuart of Morrison stressed the need for flexibility in the approach to instruction, be it fromyear-to-year, class-to-class or student-to-student.

At the samesession, Narcisco Puentes, a retired teacher from Sterling, providedsome reassurance, noting that support for new teachershas improved.

“In 1977, I was thrown into a class of 35 third graders”and hadto find his own way, he said. “There’s plenty of support now” in theform of interventionists, aides and otherlearning tools.

In the main gym, students could participateinmockinterviews withschool administratorsto get a taste ofjob hunting. They also got to hear from superintendents Ron McCord of Rock Falls, Sheri Smith of Forrestville Valley and Heidi Lensing of Prophetstown-Lyndon-Tampico about the career track from teaching to administration.

Jensen,inherkeynoteaddress, wasn’tshyaboutthechallengesof a teaching career.Assheexplained,oneof themostdifficultcamejustdaysafter beingnamedteacherof year–adayshe shutherselfawayinherclassroom, crawledunderherdeskandbrokedown intears.

Jensenalsodescribedherrockystart atanalternativeschool.Yetshesaidit eventuallymadeheramorecompassionateteacher,whenshecametorealizethatthosestudentswereactingout because,forthem,schoolwastheirsafe place,their sanctuary fromaworldof troubles.It’sinfluencedherapproach eversince.

Jensenthendrewdistinctions betweentypesofstudents,focusingon whatmotivatesthem,suchasthestudentwhoalwayshastheirhandupor the oneswhoareafraidtofail.

Butshetoldthe storyaboutastudent namedJoshfromherseniorEnglish coursewhoworefailureasabadgeof honor,andhowshefoundawaytoconnectwithhim.Theystruckadeal:Ifhe passedhercoursethenshewouldagree tolethimbringhispetpythontoschool soshecouldovercomeherownparalyzing fear ofsnakes.

Asitturnedout,Josh’smotivation camelessfromthechallengeandmore fromhispeers,whopushedhimto achievebecauseeveryonewantedto see her handle asnake.

Atthatpointinherstory,a slide showingapictureofJensenhandling Josh’spythonwasprojectedontheback wall.

Sucha momentofachievement and personalgrowth,bothforJosh andherself,wouldn’thavehappenedifshe hadn’tseizedanopportunitytobevulnerable,yetalsoinquisitiveandcurious about astudent,shesaid.

Carroll, Whitesidecounties brace for Mississippi River flooding

ResidentsofSavannawere sandbaggingtheriverfront, whileinFultontherisingMississippiRiverpassedintoflood stageSaturday.

TheNationalWeatherServiceintheQuad Cities reported thatthewateratFultonwassix inchesabovefloodstage,which issetat16feet.

Theriverhasbeenrising sinceApril19,fedbysnowmelt andrecentheavyrainsinMinnesotaandWisconsin,theservicesaidinafloodriskwebinar April21.

ProjectionsbytheU.S.Army CorpsofEngine ersshow increasedriskoffloodingfrom DubuquetoDavenport.

AtFulton,thewaterwas expectedtogetto18feet–which ismoderate-stageflooding –aboutmiddaySunday.

However,thecrestisn’t expecteduntilFriday,April28, whenthewaterlevelisexpected tobeat20.5feet,whichqualifies as majorflooding.

In Savanna,whichis24miles upriverfromFulton,firefight-

ers,publicworksemployeesand volunteersfromWestCarroll schoolshavebeenbusysince Fridayconstructingsandbaggingwalls.

ExploreSavanna,thetown’s tourismgroup,putoutthecall forvolunteers,whoareaskedto reporttotheSavannaFire Departmentforassignment.

TheSavannaFireDepartmentdevotedFridaytobuilding a750-foot-longwallbehindthe 300and400blocksofMainStreet.

“It’sbeenaverylongdayfor us,” thedepartmentreportedin aFacebookpost.

Itsaidanothersandbagging wallwasbeingconstructedat thenorthendofthe500block.

Thefiredepartmentalso closedthe300and400blocksto allowtruckstodeliversandbags.

Thefiredepartment’spost saidwaterlevelsinSavannawill reachthe20.87-footlevelofthe 2019floodbyWednesday.

Thewaterisexpectedtorise anotherthreetofivedaysafter that,accordingtothepost.

Residents of Fulton were able to rid their homes and garages of waste in a safe and secure manner. The city of Fulton,Fulton Chamber ofCommerce and Fulton Kiwanis Club sponsored a recycling event in downtown Fulton. Items received included 400 tires, 1,200 pounds of paper shredded by Cintas, 20 pounds of medication accepted by the WhitesideCountySheriff’sDepartment, a large trailer with 2 tons of appliances, a truck bed full of newspapers by the Fulton Boy Scouts and a fewhundredTVsandcomputers.

The city of Fulton and Heritage Canyon announced Fulton’s inaugural Bluegrass/Folk Music Festival in Heritage Canyon. Festival promoter and organizer Bob Whitten said, “Everyone loves this kind of music and I can’t think of a better place to have this festival.” Five bands have been booked and they are excitedaboutplayinginthecanyon.

Inaninstantclassicpitchers’ duel April19,oneswingwasallittookforthe SterlingGoldenWarriors.

AfterSterling’sEllieLeighand Erie-Prophetstown’sAylahJones matchedzerosforsixinnings,Lauren Jacobshadthehitandsprintaround thebasesinthebottomoftheseventhto givetheWarriorsa1-0walk-off win overthePanthers.

“Ijusttrustedmyoffense,”Leigh said.“Theywerestrugglingatfirst,but Iknewinourlastinningthatsomething wasgoingtohappen.Itwaseithergoing tobe LaurenorSienna [Stingley]who wasgoingtogetthebighit,andwe madeitinterestingattheend,definitely.”
