Asfate wouldhaveit,the windowsarenotjustastandardwindowthateasilycanbe purchasedofftheshelfand poppedintoplace.ThewindowsonC-wingarecustom madebyPellatofitexactlythe measurementofeachofthe roomwindowsfor thiswing. Eachwindowisjustalittlebit differentthanthenext,and oncequotesweregottenfor bothrepairandreplacementit

EmilyandDanDetermantookownershipofthepopulardowntownshop April17,saidWendyOttens,theformerownerandmayorofFulton.

Emilyhasbeenateacherinthe Clintonschooldistrictfor15yearsand Danisthesalesmanager atBeckwith Roofing.

They’reexcitedtolaunchtheirnext chapterassmallbusinessowners.

“I’vefeltforthelastcoupleofyears thatIwasreadyforamajorchange butwasn’tsurewhatpathIwantedto take,”Emilysaid.“IsawthatSweet Woodruffwasforsaleandthought thatwouldbesomethingIwould love butdidn’tbringituprightawaytomy husband.Adaylater,hesawthatit wasforsaleandthoughtIwouldlove itandbrought theideatome.Sowe calledandscheduledawalk-through rightaway.”

EmilywasaregularatSweetWoodruff,whichfeatureshome décor,artwork,florals,statuettes,jewelry, candles,soaps,accessoriesandgarden décor.She’salreadybeenpurchasing herown line ofitemstointerestan evenbroaderclientele,butplansto keeptheshopclosetoitsroots.

Ottenssaidafter17yearsofownershipandmovingtheshopthreetimes sincefirstopeningthat itwasfinally timetolessentheload.

“I’mthemayor,Ihavesevengrandkidsandit’stimetoslowdown,asI’m slowingdown,”shesaid,smiling Otherthanexcludingtheshop’sname inthedeal,shelistedtheturnkeybusinessearlierthisyearwiththehopesof findingnewownerswhosharedthe samevisionforthespaceasshedid.

Ottens wasimpressedbythecouple’steamworkandsupportofeach other,sayingthat’simportantfor entrepreneurs.

“Theyboughtthe building, thedisplaysandtheinventory,”shesaid.“I handedthemakeyandtheyhanded meacheck.”

TheDetermansplantohave a grandopeningthissummeronce Emilyisdonewithschool.She’llbe teachinguntilJuneandthenwillleave forgoodsoshecanbeattheshopfulltime.Untilthen,shehasadedicated teaminplacetocontinuebusiness asusual.

“We’vebeenfortunateenoughto keepthecurrentemployeesand WendyhasstayedonwhileIfinishthe schoolyearandtoshowmetheropes,” she said.“Wehavebeensofortunate

forWendyandthestaff’sknowledge andguidancealongtheway.”

Ottenssaidshe’shappytoassistthe coupleduringthetransitionand will bethereforthemaslongastheyneed.

“Beingthemayor,Iwanttoseeit

succeed,”shesaid.“Fultonisdoing fantastic,andwearegrowing.And I couldn’thavepickedabettercoupleto keepthisplacegoing.”

Thefoursometoldhertheywere first-timevisitors totheU.S.fromthe Netherlands.Theyweredrivingdown bothsidesoftheMississippiRiverto seethesightsandnoticeddeImmigrantWindmill,standing tallonFulton’slevee,astheywerecrossingthe bridge.Theimpressivesightbrought themintotown,wherePessmanended upbeingintherightplaceatthe righttime.
