Afterthe“PompandCircumstance” processional,opening remarks were given by Principal JanetBarnhart,celebratingthestudentsasthey“marked theendofoneeraandthebeginning ofthenext.”SeniorsAmberBurke and MadisonLackasthenperformedthe
nationalanthem.
SalutatorianEmmaMegliaddressed thecrowdwithathemeof focusingon thefuture. Afterherspeech,thePHS Bandperformed“ShouldIStayorShould IGo,” by TheClash. Awardsandscholarships were given, followed by aninspirationalspeech by valedictorianAlexis Megli.
ThePHSChoirperformed“Memories” by Maroon5, followed by theCertificationofGraduates by Superintendent HeidiLensingandthePresentationof Diplomas by Mrs. BarnhartandmembersoftheBoardofEducation.After tossingtheircapsintheair,theClassof

DIXON– TheIllinois Department of Transportationannouncedthat, weather permitting, constructionwillbegin Tuesday, May30,onIllinois 78in WhitesideCounty. The work zoneisfrom theWhiteside-CarrollCountyline to U.S. 30north of Morrisonandwill requirea 30-day roadclosure.
Workwill replacemultipleculverts alongIllinois 78 and resurfacethe road. The roadwillbeclosedstartingMay30, withaccessopenonly to localtraffic.A markeddetourwilldirectmotorists to use U.S.30,Illinois 84 andArgo Fay Road.

Allthestudentsworeyellowhard hatsprovidedbycontractorRussell Construction andsatonthelawnas ElementaryPrincipalMarkLofgren, SuperintendentJoshTemple andprojectmanagerDarrin Pearsalltalked abouttheproject.Asschoolleadersand BoardofEducationmemberslinedup withshovelsforthegroundbreaking, thestudents’chantsof“digit,digit,dig it”filledtheair.
Theproject’saimistorenovateand create20learningspacesaspartofthe district’splantodevelopmore21st-century learningspacesandsaferenvironments.
Templesaidtherewillbealotof activityon-siteduringthenextschool yearasworkersconstructfourstate-ofthe-artclassrooms,renovatetheschool libraryand15classroomsingrades3-5, andcreatesmall groupstudyspaces.

Itwasanexcitingweekendatthe IESAClass3 statetrackmeetatthe EastSideCentre inEastPeoria,with theRiverdaleMiddleSchooltrack programsending24athletestocompeteatthetwo-dayevent.Theycame homewithnine individualmedalists, allsevenrelayteamsplacing,two individualstatechampions,andthe seventhgradeboyswinningtheClass 3Ateamchampionship.
BrooklynPetersonsetthetone withaClass3Arecord-settingthrow of34feet,9inchestowinstateforthe seventhgradegirlsonFriday,May19. DevanReikardhadapersonalbest jumpof15-1.5toplace13thinthe eighthgradegirlslongjumpandAmarahColemanhadapersonalbestin thediscuswithathrowof83-2,placing seventhfortheeighthgradegirls.
EthanSwiftranatimeof17.30in the110hurdles,whichwasthe13th besttimeinthestatefortheeighth gradeboys.
Intheseventhgradegirls400dash, AvaGaulrappranapersonalbest witha1:05,placingsixth.

CHARLESTON–TommyMurraystartedthe IHSAClass1Astatefinals withastrongruninthe 3,200meters.Hefinisheditwithafinalstrongkickin the1,600.
Heleftthemeetasatwo-eventchampion.
TheRiverdaleseniorclosedhiscareerwithapair ofgoldmedalsSaturdayatEasternIllinoisUniversity’sO’BrienField,pullingoffthedistancedouble withtwoscintillatingperformances.
Murraywonthethirdraceoftheday,takingthe 3,200in9:14.77.Hethenwonthethird-to-lastraceof theday,toppingthefieldinthe 1,600witha timeof 4:19.24.
“Itfeelsprettygood,”Murraysaidwhenasked howheliked thesoundof“statechampion”before hisname.“Happyaboutit.Thisiswhatallthework hasgoneinto,andI’mjustthankfulforeveryone aroundme:myteam,mysupportsystem,my coaches,myparents,allmyfamily.Ithelpsmealot, andwinningmakesthemproud,andthat’smyway ofthankingthemforhelpingmesomuch.”
The3,200wasneverreallyindoubt.AfterMurray ranwiththeleadpackforthefirstfourlaps,hetook theleadandslowlyexpandeditthroughoutthefinal fourlaps.WhenTuscola’sJacksonBarrettstarted pickinguphispacetomakeamovetothefront,the Ramsstarmatcheditandcruisedtothevictory.
Heranthesecondhalfoftheracejustasfast–if notfaster–thanthefirstfourlapsandbeatrunner-upAkiliParekhofChicagoLatinby7.55seconds (9:22.32).Barretttookthirdin9:24.18.
“Mycoachsaystoalwaysmakesmartmoves,and that’swhatIdid,”Murraysaid.“Idraftedoff–that’s aloteasierinthe3,200–andprobablyabout3½laps out,IsawBarrettmadeabigmoveandIcoveredit, andIthought,‘Nowisthetimeformetogo.’And I wentinandIthinkInegative-splitthosethreelaps. Ithurtalot,butfeelsgoodtowin.”
Asfreshasthejoyandpainaftertheracewasthe knowledgethataboutthreehoursand15minutes later,he’dbebackonthetrackforthefinaltimein hishighschoolcareertorunthe1,600.
Atthetime,hewasn’tsurehowwellhe’drecover forthesecondrunoftheday,butwaslookingforwardtothechallenge.
“We’regoingtoseeifIcanrejuvenatealittlebit,” hesaidwithawrysmile.“It’sbasicallythesame guys,amazingracers,guysI’veracedsomanytimes. Tremendousrespectforthem,andonemoretimeto racewiththemisprettyawesome.”
Murray took full advantageofthat finalrun.He gotoutinfrontinthefirsthalfofthe1,600,thenhad theanswertoalatechallenge.
With thepack runningmuch closertogether, Murrayhadacoupleofrunnersrightbehindhim withabout300meterstogo.Oneofthempassed Murraywithabout200metersleftintherace,but thatjustspurredMurraytomovefaster.Hekickedit in,passingthenewleaderalmostimmediatelyand thenholdingondownthefinalstretchtotakehome hissecondtitleoftheday.
“Iwantedthatvictory,soIjustfeltitinmetokick rightbackathim,andIwasabletodoit.It’smylast race,sowhynotputeverythingoutthere?”Murray said.“Iwasabittiredtocomebackforthe1,600,but
allthework andeverythingI’vedonepushedme through.I’mveryhappyaboutthat.Ididn’treally expectit,butveryhappyaboutit.”
Aftermissingoutonthestateexperienceas a freshmanbecauseoftheCOVID-19pandemic,Murrayqualifiedinbotheventsasasophomorein2021; hefinishedseventhinthe3,200in9:43.33and16thin the1,600in4:41.51.
Last year,headdedtwomoremedalstotheseventhfrom2021,takingthirdinthe1,600in4:21.98and finishingfourth in the3,200in9:31.75.Hewas4.39 secondsoffthepaceinthe1,600,and16.18seconds behindinthe3,200.
ButtheendlessmilesMurrayhasputinpaidoff inabigwayinhisfinalmeetasaRam,andhetooka momentafterthesecondvictorytoacknowledge howfarhe’scomeandthosewhohelpedhimonhis journey.
“I’mjustsothankfulI’vebeenabletorunwithall theguysonmyteam.ThesupportsystemIhave,the familyIhave,I’vecreatedsomeofmyclosestrelationships,andmycoacheshavebecomelikeparents androlemodelstome.It’sreallyjustchangedmeas anindividual,helped me grow alot,andkindof helpedmefindanidentity,too,”Murraysaid.“It’s givenmeplans forthefuture,it’salljustgreat.I’m justsohappywithmycareeratRiverdale,andagain, I’msogladtohavespentmyfouryearshere.”
Healsohopesthegoldmedalswillhelpgiveback totheRiverdaleRamrunningprogramthathas givenhimsomuchthepastfouryears.
Afterbeingpartofthecrosscountryprogram whentherewasbarelyateam,hehasseenthesport ofrunninggrowaroundPortByron,andlovesthe directionit’sheading.
“Riverdale hasabrightfuture,alotofkidswho arereallygoodatrunninghaveseenoursuccessand arereallyexcitedtojointheprogram.We’regoingto havealotmorekidscomingoutforcrosscountry, andIcouldseeRiverdalebecomingasortof1A dynasty,”Murraysaid.“Ithinkthat’sprobablythe bestthingaboutthesevictories,isthatithelpsmoti-

TheHeatscoredinthebottomof thesixthinningtowintheClass1ASt. BedeSectionalsemifinal1-0onMay24 toadvancetothetitlegameagainst hostSt.Bedeinarematch oflast year’ssectionalchampionship.
Morrison(18-10)hadarunneron baseinallbutthefirstandlast inningsandhadtworunnersonbase threetimes.ButeachtimeWestCentral (29-7)foundawaytowiggleoffthe hookandpreservethescorelesstie.
“Wealljusttriedtokeepourheads up.Weknewitwashardandweknew weshould’vehadatleastfourruns, probably.Butwejusttriedtotoughit outandkepttellingourselves,‘Next inning,nextinning,’”sophomore pitcherBellaDuncansaid.“Wejust didn’tgetthatotherinning.”

Thelossdoesn’ttakeawayfrom theseasonMorrisonhad,especiallya hotfinishthat ledtoitsfirst regional titlesince2017.
“Itwasanoutstandingseason,” Duncansaid.“Wehadn’twon a regionalchampionshipinsixyears,so towinregionalswasalreadyabig accomplishmentforus.”
It’snostretchtosayMorrison couldbebackinthissameposition nextseason.TheFillieslosejusttwo seniorstartersandbringbackapair ofpitchersinDuncanandEads.
Whileithurtsnow,playingin a coupleofpressure-packedgamesto finishtheseasonwillbegoodexperiencesfortheFilliesmovingforward.
“Wejustkeptcheering.Wejust playedatough,closegameagainst Newmanandweknewthatifwejust keptourheadsup,anythingispossible,” Anderson said.“Itdidn’twork outforustoday,butwegainmore newplayersnextyearandthey’llhelp us.Wejusthavetocomebackstronger.”

That’swheretheSteamersfound themselvesinthe bottomoftheseventhinningoftheClass1APearl City SectionalsemifinalMay24 against Dakota.
Downsixruns,Fultonscoredfive inthelastoftheseventh–fourwith twoouts.ButtheSteamerscouldn’t getthelastrunacrosshomeplateto tie thegame,fallingtothe Indians 7-6 tocloseouttheirseasonat17-8.
“Wehavehadthoseinningsquitea bit,”FultoncoachBrentDykstrasaid. “Wewonseveralone-rungamesand lostseveralone-rungames. It’s a sign thatourkidsperseveredallnight long.”
