Kids catch a few fish and plenty of prizes at 18th annual Dick Brown Fishing Derby

PROPHETSTOWN – If fish in the Rock River have any long-term memory, they know to avoid Prophetstown State Park on the second Saturday of June.

That’s when scores of kids line the south bank of the park aiming to catch “the big one” at the annual Dick Brown Fishing Derby, hosted by the Prophetstown Police Department.

About 90 kids arrived at the 18th annual event Saturday and didn’t mind one bit that the river level was up and the fish biting was a bit low.

Caleb Watson, 18 months, of Prophetstown was one of those kids.

“He lost interest pretty quick,” said his grandmother Sharon Heun, “but he did catch a fish.”

Caleb’s attention span was a bit longer when Prophetstown police officer Will Lukehart helped him pick out a prize. Caleb sort of liked the Spider-Man punching bag, but finally settled on sidewalk chalk.

Kids “competed” in three age groups: 0-6, 7-10 and 11-14 and each earned a prize even if they didn’t catch a fish.

The police department has hosted the fishing tournament for close to 60 years and renamed it 17 years ago to honor Brown, an avid fisherman.

Fifty-one kids between the ages of 0-6 signed up this year. There were 34 registered in the 7-10 age group. Four kids in the 11-14 age group registered before the event and a handful more decided to cast their lines as their allotted time slot neared.

Larry Deesing was one of the designated weighers. He hooked up the teeny little bass Kailyn Kellermann, 10, of Rock Falls, caught – even through it failed to register a weight.

“That looks like bait,” Deesing joked.

Prizes for the event are donated by area businesses and included bicycles for each age level.

And, of course, this year’s event again included free doughnuts – also called “power rings” by law enforcement, retired police chief Bruce Franks said.

Fire chief receives award for saving gunshot victim

DIXON – Right place, right time.

That’s the best way to describe how Dixon Rural Fire Protection District Chief Dustin Dahlstrom played a role in saving the life of a Tampico man who accidentally shot himself in April in a Sterling parking lot.

Dahlstrom’s actions were detailed at the June 11 district board meeting, where the man Dahlstrom saved presented him with the department’s Lifesaving Award.

The lifesaving action took place April 30, when Dahlstrom was attending a physical therapy appointment in Sterling with his wife, Sarah. A young man burst into the waiting room looking for help.

Someone had accidentally shot themselves in the parking lot, the young man said.

The victim, Robert Schiefelbein, 59, of Tampico, had just left the waiting room and gone outside, where he was holstering his concealed-carry weapon.

“It took me a minute to realize what happened,” Schiefelbein said. “I saw a guy just about ready to go into the building, so I shouted, ‘I just got shot.’ ”

Out came Dahlstrom and Schiefelbein’s physical therapist, Briane Hamstra. The two got to work applying pressure and placing a tourniquet, which brought a torrent of screams from the victim.

“I don’t remember a lot of what I said, but I know I used some colorful language, so I’m sorry for that,” Schiefelbein said.

It took me a minute to realize what happened. I saw a guy just about ready to go into the building, so I shouted, ‘I just got shot.’ ”

The tourniquet was working and the bleeding slowed. Schiefelbein was quickly flown to Rockford for treatment of his injuries. Nicking a secondary artery, Schiefelbein had lost 1 to 1½ liters of blood. Doctors concluded that he was seconds away from certain death.

Schiefelbein himself presented the award to Dahlstrom.

“If it hadn’t been for the chief, I wouldn’t be here now. My kids would be fatherless,” Schiefelbein said. “I don’t know what to say other than to say thank you.”

Rev. Dr. Lynn Everitt Longenbaugh, 86, of North Fort Myers, FL passed away June 6, 2024 at The Windsor in Cape Coral, FL. Lynn was born February 2, 1938 in Oblong, IL to Rev. Vern and Elsie Longenbaugh. His early years in central IL were defined by his love of sports and the ever-present modeling of servanthood displayed by his parents. Lynn graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in 1955 and went on to pursue a Bachelor of Arts from Indiana Central College in 1959. It is here that he met his wife, Peggy Gibson. They wed on June 11, 1960. They welcomed sons, Kevin, in 1962, Kurt, in 1967 and daughter, Amy, in 1973. Imprinted by the

Kason J. Swanson, 13, of Albany, IL, died Saturday, June 15, 2024, at his home. Kason was born October 1, 2010, in Moline, IL, to Matthew Swanson and Amberlynn Williams. He began his education at George O. Barr Elementary School in Silvis, IL, and continued at Fulton Elementary and River

He then began his 44 years of service in the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church. Motivated by a desire to lead well, he also pursued his Doctor of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, IL in 1987. With great reverence and concern, he shared in the most poignant and important moments of many people’s lives. He shared in the joy of weddings and baptisms by officiating hundreds of these ceremonies. In moments of grief and loss, he was the wise counselor and comforter. In his 44 years of full-time ministry, he stewarded 8 different congregations, including Rock Grove, IL, Fairfield, WI, Forreston, IL, Mt. Greenwood (Chicago), Wesley (Elgin), Morrison, IL, Gary Memorial (Wheaton), and Lasalle, IL.

Lynn was an outdoorsman who loved his sports. He combined his outdoor passion with ministry as Chair of Outdoor and Retreat Ministries, Director of Junior High youth

Bend Middle School, where he became a proud Steamer. Kason spent his summers playing Rec baseball, but his true passion was track and field, where he excelled as a sprinter. He was also an avid gamer, a wonderful brother and son, and one of the most caring individuals one could ever meet. His bright spirit and kind heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his parents, Matthew Swanson of Albany, IL, Amberlynn Williams of Clinton, IA and Leslie Swanson of Dixon, IL; his siblings, Ariana, Xaelynn, Terrence, A’laighsia, MarTavious of Clinton, IA and Mariah and Eliana of Dixon, IL; grandparents, Ted J. Lynn remained active throughout his life playing full court basketball well into his 50s. He enjoyed playing competitive tennis and golfing to chase an acceptable handicap while in a pursuit to golf his age. He and Peggy retired to Fort Myers, FL in 2003 delighted that neither rain nor snow never interrupted a sunny day of golf.

Lynn is survived by his sons, Kevin (Leanne) Longenbaugh, Evansville, IN and Kurt (Eliza) Longenbaugh, Hoffman Estates, IL; daughter, Amy Longenbaugh, Chicago, IL; sister, Elaine Catlin (David); 7 grandchildren, Tennille, Corie, Bailey, Stephanie, Michael, Rachel and Daniel; and 10 great grandchildren.

3 deputies shot in standoff near Dixon

Two treated at a local hospital and released, one undergoes surgery

DIXON – A rural Dixon resident armed with two handguns shot three members of the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team on the afternoon of June 12 after police were called to his home by a family member, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.

Police were called at 8:39 a.m. to the 400 block of Wild Rice Lane, in Lost Lake, a rural subdivision east of Dixon. The family member who called police warned them that it could be a “suicideby-cop” situation, VanVickle said. The individual had threatened suicide and homicide, VanVickle told Shaw Local.

After a three-hour standoff, three deputies as well as the home’s resident were shot exchanging gunfire. One deputy and the shooter underwent surgery June 12; two other deputies were treated at KSB Hospital in Dixon and released.

All three deputies are members of the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office’s Emergency Response Team. The ERT is made up of individuals from different agencies, including the sheriff’s office, Oregon and Byron police departments, and SWAT medics from the Rochelle Fire Department.

Officers arrived at the scene about 9 a.m. The ERT was called at 9:18 a.m.

“It was quickly determined that our Emergency Response Team would be activated,” VanVickle said.

At 10:40 a.m., hostage negotiators placed the first call to the suspect’s cellphone. A total of 50 phone calls were made to the residence with no answer, VanVickle said. Additional resources were brought in to assist at the scene at 11:09 a.m.

“At 11:51 a.m., due to the lack of communication, it was determined that our ERT would enter the house and determine the well-being of that individual,” VanVickle said. “Immediately upon entering the house, our deputies received fire from inside the house. Three deputies were struck by gunfire and transported to local hospitals. The suspect was also struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital.”

The suspect was armed with two handguns, a knife and pepper spray and was wearing what appeared to be body armor when he charged at police,

VanVickle said.

“Two officers were taken by ground transport to KSB, where they were treated and released. One was flown to OSF and is currently in surgery,” VanVickle said June 12.

The suspect, who was in the residence by himself, also was shot and taken to KSB, where he was undergoing surgery, VanVickle said.

Charges are pending after a review by the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office, VanVickle said. A search of the home is part of the investigation, he said.

“This was a really, really bad situation,” VanVickle said.

After finding the suspect barricaded inside the door, the deputies were ambushed, VanVickle said. All their training goes into this to “make sure everyone goes home,” he said.

Cheri Kemp, a longtime resident of Lost Lake, was gardening when she heard an “explosion,” she said in an interview with Shaw Local News Network.

Kemp’s garden was about 400 yards away from the house. Hearing what sounded like shooting, Kemp described

seeing officers in SWAT gear surrounding the residence.

“You see this stuff on the news,” Kemp said, adding that this just “doesn’t happen here.”

It’s a very peaceful community, she said, but “you have no clue what’s going on inside someone’s home.”

VanVickle said that because the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office is a small rural agency, “we used all the resources we had today.”

The Ancestor Project

As one of the final projects of the year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone else that they could research and learn more about in order to write a story telling about their life. Students conducted interviews with family members and some were able to gather additional resources and pictures to help tell their story. While there were many great stories written, not all will be published.

This project was a collaborative effort between students’ history classes with Mrs. Kruthoff and Mr. Armstrong, English class with Mrs. Wolf and their families. (It was inspired by the original project that longtime English teacher Mrs. Wiersema made a tradition in her eighth grade class).

Students enjoyed getting to know more about their families and many were surprised to learn how interesting their families were. We hope you will enjoy their stories, too!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to not be able to speak after you have been able to for almost your whole life? Well, my maternal great-grandpa, Ronald George Murphy, had to have his voice box removed as an adult.

His childhood was pretty good. He grew up with seven siblings. As an adult, my great-grandpa still lived a very good life where he married his lifelong partner. His later life, once again, was still amazing. My inspiring great-grandpa may have died early, but he still lived his life to the fullest. My great-grandpa was an amazing person because he loved all of his big family and he got through many hardships. One hardship he got through was his brother, Jerry, drowning in the Rock River from a strong current.

Overall, my great-grandpa was an amazing, kind person and he lived his short life to the fullest.

Ronald George Murphy lived a very good childhood. He was born on Nov. 7, 1936, in the small town of Sterling, Illinois. My great-grandpa’s mom was Elsie Haydn Murphy and his dad was George Murphy. My loving greatgrandpa grew up with many loving, kind siblings. His favorite food was fish. He never did any sports or clubs. My brave great-grandpa never went to college because he was in the U.S. Air Force. His brothers were Warren Murphy and Jerry Murphy. His sisters were Susan Jacobs, Judy Koehler, Margie Bryson, Frances Edwards and Phylis Schwartsman.

My great-grandpa had many fond memories of fishing as a child, and many family memories, too. My greatgrandpa found his passion and love of fishing since the first time he ever fished. He also loved to spend a lot of time with his loving family. My smart great-grandpa happily graduated from Erie schools, but then went straight into the U.S. Air Force right after graduation. Eventually, my brave great-grandpa was honorably discharged from the Air Force when his brother, Jerry Murphy, drowned in the Rock River from a very strong current that sucked him under.

My amazing great-grandpa grew up to have a good adult life, too. He married Ernestine Brummet on Dec. 30, 1958, at the age of 23. My great-grandpa was a loyal person and Ernestine Brummet was the only person he ever married. They had four girls together. They were Judy Murphy, Debbie DeBoer, Brenda Murphy and my grandma, Jeri Misfeldt.

Besides being in the Air Force from 1953-1959, he had two other jobs. The first job my hardworking greatgrandpa had was with the Illinois Highway Department for four years and the second job was with John Deere for 28 years. He loved fishing still as an adult, but he also loved the

Chicago Bulls and the Bears. The only vacations he went on were fishing trips to Minnesota every year with some friends. Basically, his only hobby was fishing.

My strong great-grandpa got a disability retirement from John Deere because of his leg amputation when he had poor circulation. He only had his leg amputated from right below the knee. My great-grandpa also got throat cancer and had to have his voice box and part of his tongue removed. My sweet great-grandpa was mute for the rest of his life.

In his later life, he moved from his hometown of Sterling into the village of Erie.

One of his major achievements was going into the Air Force at a young age. His lifelong friends were all seven of his siblings, Ernestine Brummet, his children and his parents. Basically, everyone in his family were his friends. He had other friends, too, but his family were the main people he had. The main hardships in my tough great-grandpa’s life was having his leg amputated and getting throat cancer. He mainly spent his free time fishing and watching football. Most of his free time would consist of fishing. My lovely great-grandpa’s advice for others was to be kind to everyone and everything.

My great-grandpa passed away on Aug. 5, 1996. He died at the young age of 59. After he had his disability retirement, he didn’t get another job.

His grandchildren are Amber Pratt and Ron Misfeldt. His in-laws are Mathew Pratt and Don Shutte. Ron and his husband Don never switched last names, but they are still married. My amazing great-grandpa died very long before my great-grandma did, but when she did die, she was buried as close to him as they could, which they both requested. She died very peacefully in her sleep and so did my loving great-grandpa.

In my opinion, I feel a lot closer to my caring great-grandpa than I did before because I never got to meet

him. He died before I was born, but I still had a little bit of knowledge about him from hearing my family talk about him. Even though I knew some stuff about him, I still did learn a lot more about him than I already did and I learned a lot about his life. I also learned that my thankful greatgrandpa was a great person and was very loving. I learned his interests and how great his life was. I also learned that my amazing greatgrandpa liked kids and loved his family more than anything. I learned a lot about him, but I also learned a couple of life lessons. One life lesson I learned was to not judge someone because you never know what is happening in their life.

Ronald George Murphy was an amazing person because he loved his family, was very kind and he lived his life to the fullest, even though it wasn’t the longest. My great-grandpa may have had a lot of siblings, but he loved them all and loved all of his family. In his free time. he would fish and watch football games. He was sort of friends with his lifelong wife before they even got together or got married. I definitely feel closer to him than I ever have before. On my dad’s side, we are German, Irish and American, but on my mom’s side, we are all American. With what I know now, everyone on my mom’s side is American.

In conclusion, this is why I chose Ronald George Murphy for my ancestor project. I am very happy that I chose my amazing great-grandpa Ronald George Murphy without a second thought. He is an interesting, kind, amazing person. He is an amazing role model and he is a very good person. He deserves a lot of love. He was so kind and gentle. He would’ve been an amazing great-grandpa to me. I love him very much. I wish I had the chance to meet him. I would be so happy if I did have the chance to meet him. My family always tells me that I would’ve loved him and he would’ve loved me very much.

MORRISON – Five years ago, Morrison started a mapping process to identify how facets of life throughout the city could be improved.

More than 70 people got together and pondered questions designed to get them thinking about Morrison.

“We talked about what makes Morrison great and all the positives and then we said what are the things we could work on and we worked on that,” said Amanda Cook, a Morrison native and business owner who joined in on the process.

Through brainstorming sessions, four committees were formed: Beautification, Industrial, Small Business and Parks and Rec.

Cook, a Realtor and graphic designer, and Dr. Brad Yaklich, a Morrison optometrist, felt strongly that a fifth one needed to be created – one that would focus on festivals and events.

“While we were there, we were like, ‘Oh, yeah, everybody wants to be a part of us, we’re the Department of Fun,’ ” she said. “We were like ‘That’s a genius name,’ so we thought, ‘We’ll just go with it.’

“We started working together trying to think what are the things that we could bring to Morrison to keep our community here in Morrison and not have to leave town to go find fun things to do.”

The first events were music bingo that was well-received and a Hallow -

een contest and tailgating activity for adults.

When the pandemic hit, they took music bingo online. As the restrictions started to lift, they were able to add more events such as a string of block parties celebrating Morrison’s new Main Street infrastructure in 2021.

That idea sprung from negative comments about the major work going on there and a desire to flip the discussion.

“We knew they were going block by block so we decided to do a celebration after each block was finished,” she said.

Since then, the group, along with On the Move with Morrison Parks and Recreation, became a nonprofit organization and continues to dream up, plan and carry out entertaining events for all ages.

And they continue to have a lot of laughs along the way.

From a Glow Parade and block parties to the Winesday Wednesday Walk set for 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 19 – a shopping and wine tasting event at Morrison businesses – the goal is to create a sense of community among residents.

Other events in the works for this year include Rock the Raft, a WOZA wrestling event, the annual Glow Parade and a Halloween run.

June 20, 1984

Sikkema’s, a well-known furniture store in Fulton, will have a grand opening of its new Living Room Gallery. To transform the business from a full-line furniture store to the new Gallery required a complete renovation and remodeling of the store. Instead of having a small amount of furniture available for every room in the house, the new store will stock only for the living room.

Encouraged by the fact that Morrison has obtained approval of a state grant of $205,000 for industrial development, city officials are optimistic about the chances of obtaining up to $250,000 in a similar grant for Fulton. At a special meeting of the City Council, a resolution was adopted calling for the city to make a formal application for the grant.

June 15, 1994

Fulton’s new proposed industry still is planning to become a reality, City Administrator Joe Woith said. Woith said the plant still is planning to come and developers are securing permits from agencies. Woith said he is in contact with the developers almost every week about securing permits.

Donald Murray was honored for his 59 years of service to the Knights of Columbus with an Honorary Life Membership Certificate at a meeting of the Fulton-Albany Knights of Columbus Council 9972. Allen Pratt, Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, presented the certificate to Murray.

Gertrude Poole observed her 100th birthday on June 15. She was a teacher at the East Clinton and Fulton Grade schools, was a librarian at the Fulton library, was president of the Women’s Service Club and is a charter member of Second Reformed Church. She graduated from Fulton schools and was a graduate of the University of Illinois, Northern Illinois University and Harvard. She received a master’s degree

from the University of Illinois.

State Rep. Mike Boland attended the Kiwanis Club meeting. He drew the winners of the cash raffle. Winners are Bonnie Wiersema, $50; Bill Schriener, $100; and David Vogel, $250. Boland updated the group on the progress of the Route 30 four-lane project.

The Fulton High School Class of 1939 celebrated its 75th reunion. Present were Jackie Pollard, Jim Field, Ruth Bos, Phyllis Jones and Pauline Wiersema. Those unable to attend were Irene Kramer and Ella Smith. To look at the group you would never guess that they were older than 90. Although they may move a little slower, they are a lively bunch.

Taylor Fleetwood received a call from Illinois USA wrestling asking if he would wrestle for Team Illinois in the National Schoolboy Freestyle/Greco Roman Duals in Indianapolis. Fleetwood received the call because he was the freestyle and Greco Roman state champion a few weeks ago at the University of Illinois. Fleetwood accepted the honor to represent Illinois and River Bend Wrestling on the national team.

How to navigate picnics, parties, BBQs while watching your weight

This is a busy time of year with graduation parties, weddings, festivals, etc. If you are trying to watch your weight and/or stay healthy, it can be challenging. Here is some advice for navigating events that always seem to revolve around food.

• Have a plan: Some forethought or intention before you head to an outing can go a long way in keeping you on track. Don’t skip meals beforehand so that you are not starving when you arrive. Decide in advance to limit yourself to one alcoholic beverage or one sweet treat. Determine to keep portion sizes small and eat only one plate of food.

• Survey the buffet: Before you pick up a plate, take a walk by the serving area and see what is available and decide what you are going to choose. This keeps you from making impulsive decisions or feeling pressured to fill your plate because people are waiting in line behind you. At a food truck event or carnival, check out all the options and see what fits in your plan before getting in line.

• Move where the food isn’t: After you fill your plate, take it as far away as possible and, if you can, turn your back to the serving area. This makes it a little harder to reach for more and it gives you a minute more to think about returning to the line.

• Carry water: A bottle or glass of water in hand gives you something to do with your hands and sipping can satisfy the “hand to mouth” urge when everyone around you is snacking. Taking sips of water between bites of food slows down your eating, which helps you to realize you are full before you get overstuffed.

• Find the fun: Get involved in what-

ever activity might be available. It might be a bean bag game, volleyball or even a card game. Anything that will keep your hands busy or keep you moving instead of munching.

• Practice saying no: Generous hosts or other members of your group may offer or encourage you to eat more than you want to. Think of and practice a response so that it comes naturally. You can say something polite and firm such as “Thank you so much! It was all so delicious, but no thank you.”

Deceased bird near Sterling tests positive for West Nile virus

STERLING – A deceased bird collected May 31 near Sterling has tested positive for the West Nile virus, said Jennifer Kolb, director of environmental health for the Whiteside County Health Department.

Mosquitoes become infected with West Nile virus by feeding on infected birds and can then spread West Nile virus to humans and other animals through their bite. Culex mosquitoes are the primary vector responsible for spreading West Nile virus to humans. These mosquitoes are typically found near stagnant or standing water in barrels, horse troughs, ornamental ponds, unmaintained swimming pools, puddles, creeks, ditches and marshy areas and are most likely to bite during dawn and dusk.

Typically August and September are when West Nile virus activity is at its highest; the threat of West Nile exposure can remain until the first frost. It is important for the public to

take some simple precautions, including practicing the three “R’s” –reduce, repel and report, Kolb said.

Reduce exposure

• Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn.

• Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens and repair or replace any with tears or openings.

• Try to keep doors and windows shut, especially at night.

• Eliminate all sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed, including flowerpots, wading pools, old tires, clogged rain gutters, old boats and any other receptacles, and change the water in bird baths weekly.

Repel

• Wear shoes and socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors.

• Apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535, according to

label instructions, when outdoors. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants.

Report

• Report dead birds to the Whiteside County Health Department.

• If your community has an organized mosquito control program, contact your municipal government

about areas of stagnant water in roadside ditches, flooded yards and similar locations that may produce mosquitoes.

Muscular dystrophy is an inherited condition

Muscular dystrophy refers to a group of conditions associated with weakness in the muscles. These conditions are inherited, with symptoms typically beginning in childhood. There is a predominance. There are some types that do not present until adulthood. Most of the muscular dystrophies are extinct disorders, such that mothers may transmit the condition to their sons, even though they themselves are unaffected. About 50,000 Americans are affected.

Cailyn Piercy named to University of Iowa’s President’s List

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Cailyn Piercy of Fulton was among the more than 1,200 undergraduate students at the University of Iowa named to the President’s List for the 2024 spring semester.

Piercy is a third-year student in Iowa’s

gait. There may be difficulty in rising from a sitting position and eventually trouble with running and jumping. There may be walking in a disproportionate fashion. Keep in mind that many children do this out of habit and is not by any means a shortcut sign of muscular dystrophy. Nature may compensate for some weak muscles by having large calf muscles. There also may be pain and stiffness. Some of the conditions are associated with learning disabilities or delayed growth.

Eventually, breathing problems may occur as well as heart problems because the heart is a muscle that

may become involved as well. Swallowing difficulties may occur at any stage and lead to difficulties with pneumonia, including aspiration. Sometimes feeding tubes are employed.

The diagnosis may be suspected by history and physical examination. A biopsy may help confirm the diagnosis. There also is an enzyme blood test for certain muscle disturbances. Genetic testing also may give a clue. After the diagnosis has been made, tests such as echocardiograms may be employed to check the heart and lung function. In some cases, there also are tests performed on the muscles.

There is no cure for the condition. Therefore, treatment is symptomatic. This includes old-fashioned steroids such as prednisone and also muscle relaxers. There are medicines specifically approved for treatment with some muscular dystrophy conditions. However, these are not curative. Physical therapy and range of motion exercises may be helpful. Braces can be helpful for some people. Surgery is sometimes employed to correct contractions or an extreme spinal curvature that impairs breathing.

Ongoing trials continue to look for a cure.

Fulton continues construction projects at park, City Hall

FULTON – Fulton Masonic Lodge 189 presented a $300 check to the city June 10 to be put toward the renovation of School Park on 10th Avenue.

Lodge members thanked the Fulton City Council at the meeting for the renovations that have been underway for the past several weeks. The donation comes on the heels of the reopening of the park to the public.

The official grand reopening of School Park is set for September, with construction expected to wrap up in August. The city still plans for new sidewalks and accessible parking near the pavilion and refurbishing the basketball court. There will be discussions on where to put a water fountain.

The council also has discussed the possibility of renaming the park and is looking to open up that conversation with the public.

Construction and renovation projects have been the

focus of many recent City Council discussions. Construction on City Hall has been progressing, with painting and electrical work expected to be finished within the week. Carpeting should arrive within the next week and audio and visual equipment installation is about a month out. Because of this progress, the council tentatively estimates the next City Council meeting can take place in the town hall as soon as July.

In other business June 10, the City Council approved a motion to adopt the International Property Maintenance Code, effective Jan. 1, 2025. The city ordinance will be in place in July, but tickets won’t be issued until Jan. 1, 2025.

As a note to the public, the council wanted to remind citizens that any person who solicits within the city is required to apply for a solicitor’s permit. Residents can call the city to ask about any solicitors and should the group receive a complaint, the city is willing to ask them to leave.

Rochelle artist encourages kids to get wacky at library program

MORRISON – Wacky was the word of the day June 14 at the Odell Public Library in Morrison.

The library played host to Jerry Moffitt’s Do Art Productions, a program designed to incite children’s creativity and love of art. Kids took turns adding fuzzy details to easels at the front of the room. From penguins balancing on one leg to turtles juggling Bob Ross, the goal of the program was to get kids more comfortable with thinking creatively.

Moffitt, an artist and performer, said the goal of the program is to get wacky.

“Our main goal is to try and have an experience with creativity,” Moffitt said. “Instead of trying to show ‘this is how you draw’, we want to have an interaction with them. We want the participants to leave with confidence in the creative process.”

Moffitt filled the room with laughter as he introduced This, That and the Other Thing erasers and told the kids to blame them when things went wrong with their art.

With a stuffed Bob Ross in hand, he took to juggling while riding a unicycle.

All of it aimed at encouraging cre-

ativity, Moffitt said.

“Sometimes it’s easy to look at a finished work of art and say ‘This is art,’ but we want to change that and show that it is the process that is art,” he said.

“Having fun while you are doing it, the wackiness, the music, the whole experience of art is what we focus on. We really want to aim at bringing confidence to the creative process and what can come out of it. You can make bridges

with other people, you can discover things about yourself that you didn’t know you could do or what you have inside.”

Moffitt travels to plenty of places to give his message.

“I just got back from West Virginia. I’m going down to the Florida Keys in September,” Moffitt said. “We go all over and are always constantly expanding, but we really like to keep it local at

the smaller locations. I’m from a small town, Rochelle, Illinois, that’s down the way. We’re seeing a lot of kids gaining confidence. They’re recognizing us and sending us artwork.

“They really need this as an alternative to just sports. A lot of time in small towns, it’s football or nobody cares. It’s not necessarily that black and white, but we want an alternative to building confidence, to building discipline, than just sports.”

Every kid at the event got a chance to draw on the easels and on the whiteboards handed out to the crowd. They worked with prompts suggested by the audience, posed as references for their peers and gawked as Moffitt rode the unicycle. By the end of the program, everyone had the opportunity to make something truly unique.

This was not the first time Moffitt had been to Morrison. In January, he helped host an event on comic books and has hosted events in previous years.

“With art classes in small towns going away and large cities no longer having art classes in school, we like to allow that creative side to flourish in communities that don’t have that option all the time,” Moffitt said.

Man sentenced to 180 days in jail, probation for DUI

MORRISON – A Deer Grove man has been sentenced to 180 days in jail and four years of probation after pleading guilty to driving under the influence and causing a head-on crash that killed a Sterling businessman.

Alan E. Thompson Jr., 52, pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated driving under the influence and was sentenced June 12 in Whiteside County Court in connection with the collision that took the life of Timothy D. Gonigam, president of Astec Mobile Screens, on Oct.

21, 2021, in Sterling. Thompson, originally charged only with misdemeanor DUI, also pleaded guilty to improper lane use June 12.

Charges of driving under the influence of drugs and/ or alcohol and failure to reduce speed were dismissed as part of a plea deal. Thompson also was fined $26,000 and must pay $17,208 in restitution.

Thompson was scheduled to go to trial on the charges June 11, but the trial was canceled when the plea date was set, according to court records.

Sheriff’s Office, Thompson was traveling north on state Route 40 at Green River Bridge north of Osage Road about 5:30 p.m. Oct. 21, 2021, when he crossed the center line and struck a vehicle being driven south by Gonigam, 58, of Walnut.

Gonigam died at the scene.

Thompson was treated at OSF St. Anthony’s Medical Center in Rockford for unspecified injuries.

Gonigam worked for Astec Mobile Screens for 37 years, starting when it was Production Engineered Products in Walnut. He was its president and general manager at the time of his death.

According to online court records, Thompson has a felony history in Whiteside County of almost three decades.

In 2015, he was sentenced to four concurrent years on three counts of burglary; in 2005, he was sentenced to three years, six months – concurrent –on three counts of forgery; in 2004, he got two years for writing bad checks; and in 1997, he was sentenced to 2½ years’ probation, also for forgery, court records show.

Thompson also was charged with possession of a controlled substance in a case filed July 26, 2022. That case remains open, however, and court records indicate prosecutors will ask for the charge to be dismissed.

Thompson faced three to seven years in prison if convicted of the DUI, and one to four years for the controlled substance charge. Thompson is represented by Sterling defense attorney James Mertes.
