Diana Verhulst to serve as pastor at Advent Christian

Prophetstown Advent Christian Church, located at 200 Elm St., has called Pastor Diana Verhulst to its pulpit and she has accepted the call. Church board chair Leo Stewart and Verhulst, both of Prophetstown, signed an agreement Friday, June 23.

Verhulst, 68, is a licensed minister. She formerly preached at Franklin Grove Church of the Brethren and also is retired from United Way of Whiteside County where she served as Chief Executive Officer from 2016 to 2020. A native of Freeport, Verhulst attended university and worked in Southern California and later Freeport as a print journalist. Her recent background includes service in leadership roles with several international charities. Verhulst said that ministering in the town in which she makes her home is a dream come true.

“I have always thought highly of the Advent Christian Church and its leadership,” Verhulst said. “When I first moved to Prophetstown and began thinking of eventually joining a church here, I visited all of the churches, and the people of Advent Christian captured my heart and my imagination.”

After answering the lifelong call to serve God, she began seminary in 2020. Verhulst was later called to Franklin Grove where she had many acquaintances within the Church of the Brethren, which holds her ministerial license. But she stayed in touch with deacons at Advent Christian in hopes her dream could become reality.

Verhulst, whose maternal grandparents were Methodist ministers, is the wife of Prophetstown farmer Robert M. Verhulst.

Register for Tampico Days virtual youth fishing derby

This year’s Tampico Days fishing derby again will be held as a virtual event. Participants will register on July 14 at the Break Room Pub & Grub on Main Street in Tampico and receive a puck that will be photographed with your catch.

Fishing can take place from July 15-20 at the location of your choice. You submit your catch via photo to Facebook.

Fish will be photographed laying on a tape measure or ruler you provide and must include the puck that is provided to you by the festival at registration to be a valid entry. Then post in the “Fishing Derby” event on the Tampico Days Facebook page.

Longest fish wins in each age group.

Please remember that this is a fishing derby meant to provide kids the opportunity to reel in a big one while practicing good safety and having fun.

Participants are encouraged to fish as independently as possible and discourage cheating. Use this event as a time to teach kids the art of fishing and enjoy some time together.

All entries must be sent to the festival page by Friday, July 21.

Prizes will be awarded at noon Sunday, July 23, on Main Street. Even those who didn’t catch a fish will be awarded a prize. Have fun and be safe!

Plan on joining us for our Story and Craft Hour at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at the Henry C. Adams Memorial Library, 209 W. Third St., Prophetstown. During July, the library will be celebrating music and art and how important both are for our world. Come make a tin drum and see how rhythm works. This event is for all elementary school age children. The Family Reading Initiative continues during the week of July 10-15 and all kids are encouraged to read in their households.

Crews took down a tree on Portland Avenue in Morrison on Tuesday, June 27, as part of the city’s work on Illinois Route 78 South from the railroad tracks to French Creek Park. Some trees have to be removed within the parkway for the project, according to the city. Illinois 78 South is now closed other than to local traffic, and detour signs are posted for alternative routes. The project that started Monday involves replacing the water main, with work being done by Fischer Excavating Inc. of Freeport. The estimated completion date is about 180 days.

Aspiring EMTs wanted for course at SVCC

DIXON – Sauk Valley Community College is looking for people interested in becoming an emergency medical technician.

The EMT basic course is designed to train fire and rescue personnel and people interested in pursuing a career in prehospital emergency care. Students will gain the knowledge and skills to provide basic emergency medical assistance to people in need.

Littleton, CO, in Newbury, England on the 15th of October, 1960. Jan died on September 14, 2014 after 54 years of marriage. She was the love of his life and his friend. After retiring from the United States Air Force, Ronald worked the next 22 years for International Paper in Clinton, IA.

He enjoyed travel, stamp collecting, gardening, collecting history books, and he was a volunteer at the thrift shop in Savanna, IL for 10 years. Ronald and Janet also enjoyed the time they spent doing genealogy of their families. Ronald attended York Baptist Church and compiled the history of the church.

Descendants of the Peter and Catherine Schrock family will hold their annual family reunion Sunday, July 9, at the Albany American Legion, 401 S. Church St. in Albany. Illinois 78 North reopens in Whiteside County

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that Illinois 78 from the Whiteside-Carroll County line to U.S. 30 in Morrison reopened to traffic July 1. The road has been closed since May 30 to replace several culverts in the 7.5-mile work zone.

Remaining work on Illinois 78 consists of resurfacing. There will be daily lane closures controlled by flaggers for the remainder of the $7.3 million project, which is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

1963: Still trying to track down man attacked by rabid fox

60 Years

July 3, 1963

As the Journal went to press there was still no report of locating the man who was attacked by a rabid fox near Fulton about 10 days ago. Officials believe he was from Chicago. Shouts attracted Charles Jacobs, a commercial fisherman who lives nearby. Jacobs shot the fox and sent the head in for examination, which revealed the fox was definitely suffering from rabies.

Miss Stella Maris Griffa, a 17-yearold student from Cordoba, Argentina, has been chosen as the foreign exchange student to study at Fulton Community High School next term. She will make her home with the John Balk family.

50 Years

July 4, 1973

Harbor Crest Home continues to operate at near capacity and reduced its indebtedness by $20,500 during 1972, according to the annual financial report. The report reflects payments of $20,500 in principal and $5,440.54 in interest on the home’s long-term indebtedness last year. Harbor Crest Home is operated by a nonprofit corporation whose stockholders are all of those who made contributions to the original building fund when the home was constructed years ago.

The Golden Anniversary of the Fulton Kiwanis Club was celebrated at a dinner. The program was dedicated to Dr. B.J. Snyder, the only surviving charter member of the Fulton club. Snyder, who resides in Harbor Crest Home, was unable to attend but his son, Dr. William Snyder, accepted a plaque and other honors on behalf of his father. The plaque will be placed near a tree to be planted at an appropriate spot in Kiwanis Park.

July 6, 1983

Donna and Harvey Van Zuiden have opened their new business and will now be open six days a week. The business is called the Second Debut, located at 1426 10th Ave., and offers quality used clothing and other items.

Fulton soon may have a new recreational park and also a new industrial park as a result of actions taken by the city council. The recreational park might be located on the eight acres on the Cattail Road now owned by the Fulton Sportsmen’s Club, including the clubhouse. The industrial park might be a large tract between Fourth Street and Highway 84 in south Fulton. The council agreed that both projects be pursued vigorously.

30 Years

June 30, 1993

The Tennis Court Fund receives more donations from Unity Christian School Athletic Boosters for $200 and Unity Christian School Auxiliary also donates $200. Interstate Power Co. of Clinton gave the Fulton Chamber of Commerce $250 toward the renovation project. As of last week, a total of $12,650 has been raised of the $22,270 needed.

Summing up Fulton flood problems, Mayor Ven Huizen said, “It’s business as usual inside the flood district but I feel sorry for those outside the unprotected areas.” From St. Paul to St. Louis, the Mississippi is on another rampage and is now the second-highest record in the history of recording Mississippi flood crests.

At a special meeting, the River Bend School Board hired Donald Mulch II as the new superintendent for the district. Mr. Mulch was hired at a base salary of $84,608.57 and has begun his duties. He comes to the district with a great deal of experience in teaching and administrative duties, having served in the capacity of superintendent for the past 15 years.

The Fulton City Council has authorized City Attorney Bill Shirk to proceed with negotiations in the donation process of the property owned by the Arlyss Andresen Estate. The property is located at 409 N. Fourth St. It is the intent of the trustee of the estate that once donated the property is used for the purposes of education and enjoyment of the wildlife that is accessible to the property.

The Minor League Fulton Baseball Team earned a first-place trophy at the Prophetstown League Tournament. The nine- and 10-year-old boys won all three of their tournament games to take first place. Players include Kyler Pessman, Joey Huizenga, Josh Vander Ploeg, Michael Bos, Patrick Lower, Josh Huizenga, Logan Graham, Kayden Guidebeck, Zack Dykstra, Branden Russell and Trent Hill. Symptoms and diagnosis of macular degeneration are discussed

Macular degeneration is a disease of the eyes that typically gets worse over time, affecting people commonly over age 60. It’s actually the leading cause of severe permanent vision loss in people of that age. It is related to wearing tear of the macula, which is the small central portion of the retina. The retina is the light sensing nerve tissue at the back of the eye. While it does not usually cause blindness, it causes severe vision problems.

There are two forms of macular degeneration. The most common type is the dry form. This may be associated with loss of central vision but not the peripheral vision. It’s caused by deposits in the macula that gradually change the vision over time. The wet form is associated with blood vessels growing beneath the macular. This causes leaking blood and fluid in the retina. This leads us to distorted vision where straight lines commonly look wavy. Also, there may be a blind spot and loss of central vision. Sometimes the dry

form of macular generation will lead to the wet form.

The classic symptoms of macular degeneration include worsening version that is blurry, making it difficult to read the fine print or drive. Some of these phenomena may be shared with cataracts and other visual conditions. In addition, there may be dark blurry areas in the center room. Sometimes there are problems with color perception. Genetics may have something to do with this. Other risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure and obesity. Lately it has been determined that elevated blood sugar has a substantial contribution to macular degeneration.

The diagnosis may be made during an exam by an eye doctor when the eye is dilated. Sometimes a special grid called an Amsler grid is employed to see if you perceive wavy lines. Sometimes an angiography may be performed where dye is injected to determine leakage. Whichever tests are used, it is important to follow closely with your eye doctor.

There is no cure for macular degeneration. Treatment may slow it down

and help to preserve vision. Certain motions slow down vessel formation and leakage from the vessels that contribute to wet macular degeneration. Laser therapy also may destroy abnormal blood vessels. ‘The Sound of Music’ comes to Timber Lake Playhouse

MOUNT CARROLL – One of the most beloved musicals of all time –“The Sound of Music” – will take the stage Thursday through July 9 at Timber Lake Playhouse.

In Austria, 1938, an exuberant young governess brings music and joy back to a broken family, only to face danger and intrigue as the Nazis gain power. The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta von Trapp, follows an energetic governess to the seven children of Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision.

“This season at TLP, we had the dream of producing the classic musical, ‘The Sound of Music,’ utilizing our local talent and combining them with professional talent,” TLP artistic director Darren Mangler said. “We are so excited to have made this dream a reality.”

Playing the role of Maria, the children’s governess, is Mollie-Claire Matthews. Captain von Trapp is played by

Andrew Fehrenbacher. Returning to TLP in the role of Mother Abbess is Mia Gimenez. Gimenez is no stranger to the nun’s habit as she played Mother Superior in last season’s “Nunsense” and was in “Hank Williams: Lost Hiway” as Hank’s mother

Returning to Timber Lake Playhouse to direct “The Sound of Music” is Anthony C. Daniel. Daniel was at TLP last season to direct “Nunsense.”

The creative team consists of Oliver Townsend as music director, Steven Velasquez as scenic designer, Claire

Sabaj as costume designer, Annabell Sapp as props designer, lighting design is by Dylan Carter, sound design by Joe Cave and Makenzie Ruff returns to TLP in the show as the von Trapp eldest daughter, Liesl, and associate choreographer. Elaina Veasey is production stage manager.

Local performers cast in the roles of the children are Gabriel Pauley, Catia Wilson, Nadia Deline, Luke Holcomb, Alden Ames, Taylor Jakobs, Christine Ayling, Kynnedi Smith and Molly Kashner. Rosemary Heckard and Maggie Martin return from last season’s “Annie” as two of the von Trapps.

“We are proud to bring one of the most beloved musicals to life on the TLP stage and can’t wait for you to join us!” Mangler said. “The woods definitely are alive with the sound of music!”

LOCAL NEWS BRIEFS MCH to celebrate Fulton-Morrison Day at Clinton ballpark

The Clinton LumberKings will observe Fulton-Morrison Day at the ballpark on Sunday, July 9. The LumberKings will play a 2 p.m. game against the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp.

To celebrate, Morrison Community Hospital, in conjunction with Medforce Air Ambulance, is bringing the Medforce helicopter for a special appearance. The helicopter will be landing behind the LumberKings stadium at 1 p.m. Sunday, pending weather conditions.

Kids of all ages are encouraged to come and climb inside to see what an air ambulance helicopter looks like. Gift bags will be given to the first 100 kids and photos are encouraged. The helicopter will remain on the ground until about 3 p.m.

Registration open for Senior Citizen Golf Cart Tours

River Action’s annual Senior Golf Cart Tours will return to the Mississippi riverfront in September this year, but participants must

reserve a spot by the Aug. 31 deadline.

Every year, senior citizens are invited to come and join the fun in guided golf cart tours of riverfront trails on both sides of the Mississippi River. This is a fun way to gain some knowledge on the past, present and future of the Quad Cities and the Mississippi River. Tours fill up fast, and carts are limited! The fee is $30 a cart for two participants per tour. The event is held rain or shine, and no refunds will be given. A confirmation card will be sent for each cart and needs to be brought to the tour.

Illinois tours are on Thursday, Sept 7. and Iowa tours are on Friday, Sept. 8. Illinois tours include Tour A: Rock Island Arsenal from 2 to 4 p.m.; Tour B: Ben Butterworth Parkway, and Tour C: Rapids City to Port Byron to Cordova and back. The times for these tours are 9 to 11 a.m., 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m.

Josh Hammer graduates from University of Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque recognized and celebrated the academic achievements of undergraduate, graduate and seminary students during its 171st commencement with two ceremonies Saturday, April 29. Among the graduates was Joshua Hammer, bachelor of business administration, magna cum laude.

The University of Dubuque spring commencement was held in the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center. Neil MacNaughton, Ph.D., professor of nursing and head of the Department of Nursing, delivered the commencement address, titled “Community and You.”

Palumbo on Central Methodist University Dean’s List

FAYETTE, MO – The office of Central Methodist University Provost Rita Gulstad announced recently the students included on the Spring 2023 Dean’s List. Almost 900 students across all campuses and online learning met the requirements for placement, including a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher for the semester.

Amy Wallis earns degree from University of Maryland

ADELPHI, M.D. – Amy Elizabeth Wallis of Port Byron earned an Associate of Arts from the University of Maryland Global Campus in spring 2023.

Wallis was one of almost 3,400 students who earned degrees from UMGC in the spring semester. Graduates came from all 50 states, four U.S. territories and 22 countries. The average age of a UMGC graduate in the spring class of 2023 is 35 years old.

Cassie Osborn on Illinois Wesleyan Dean’s List

BLOOMINGTON – Cassie Osborn of Morrison was named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester of the 2022-23

academic year at Illinois Wesleyan University. Osborn is a senior majoring in music education.

Osborn was among 731 students from 30 states and 29 countries named to the Spring 2023 Dean’s List.

To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must earn a GPA of 3.50 or better during the semester, based on 4.0 for straight As.

Erie student participates in research at Carthage

KENOSHA, WI –Brett VanDeWostine of Erie has been selected to participate in the 2023 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience at Carthage College. VanDeWostine is conducting research into Patterns in Political Polarization with professors Haley Yaple and Landon Gauthier.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience at Carthage offers students in all majors the opportunity to engage in collaborative full-time research with professors. Students work closely with faculty mentors on a new or developing line of research.

ANNUAL BUDGET AND APPROPRIATION ORDINANCE FOR 2023-2024

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the Albany Fire Protection District, County of Whiteside, State of Illinois, has prepared or caused to be prepared in tentative form, an Annual Budget and Appropriation Ordinance for the fiscal year 2023-2024, and the Sec. of the Board has made the same conveniently available to public inspection for at least 30 days prior to the final action thereon, and

WHEREAS, a public hearing was held as to such Annual Budget and Appropriation Ordinance on the 12th day of June, 2023, at 6:00 PM, notice of which hearing was given at least thirty (30) days prior thereto by publication in the Fulton Journal, a newspaper of general circulation published within said District, and all other legal requirements have been complied with:

NOW, THEREFORE, be it ordained by the Board of Trustees of the Albany Fire Protection District, County of Whiteside, State of Illinois, as follows:

SECTION ONE: That the fiscal year of this Fire Protection District is hereby fixed and declared to be from June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024.

SECTION TWO: That the following budget containing an estimate of the amount available to said Fire Protection District and of expenditures by said District is hereby adopted as the budget of this Fire Protection District for the aforesaid fiscal year and shall be in force and effect from and after this date:

SECTION THREE: That there is hereby applied for the use of this Fire Protection District for the said fiscal year the amount of $354,468.00, such amount being divided among and applied for the several objects and purposes specified and enumerated in Part 2 of Section Two aforesaid, and said statements as contained in said Part 2 of Section Two aforesaid are hereby incorporated by reference as part of this Section Three with the same effect as if said statements were repeated in their entirety; and that this Section Three shall be and is the Annual Budget and Appropriation Ordinance of this Fire Protection District passed by the Board of Trustees as required by law and shall be in full force and effect from and after ten (10) days from this point.
