Sen. Stoller visits Prophetstown horse farm

State Sen. Win Stoller, R-Peoria, made a stop at Aaron and Amanda Mosher’s farm recently to see their Belgian horse operation.

As the minority spokesperson for the agriculture committee, Stoller said he is interested in all things farm related.

Gentle giants in the stables, the horses don’t see much work but are shown six to eight times a year hitched six at a time for shows around the region.

“You really need to learn their personalities to know how to handle them before a show,” Aaron said of the sometimes feisty equines.

Stoller was spending most of the day in and around the Prophetstown/Morrison area with a visit to Winning Wheels after the farm stop and later a tour and presentation at the Morrison Institute of Technology.

Eureka Boy Scouts tour Prophetstown Area Historical Museum

Recent visitors to the Prophetstown Area Historical Museum were Boy Scout Troop 57 from the Eureka area. The Scouts were very interested in learning all they could at Wabokieshiek, the Prophet, and his Prophet’s town. They camped in the Prophetstown State Park and canoed on the Rock River.

Blood donation opportunity in Prophetstown

After a summer of declining donations, the American Red Cross needs the public’s help to prevent a blood shortage.

When a donor makes and keeps an appointment to give blood or platelets in the weeks ahead, they can help ensure trauma patients, those undergoing cancer treatment and people with lifelong blood disorders can get the blood they count on.

Right now, the Red Cross especially needs type O negative, type O positive and type B

Economic Development provides updates on $1 billion in projects

MORRISON – Regional projects worth a combined $1 billion were the focus of a Whiteside County Economic Development update July 25 at the Morrison Institute of Technology auditorium.

“These are game changers for the region,” WCED Director Gary Camarano said, emphasizing the “b” in billion.

The projects include broadband fiber deployment, U.S. Highway 30 expansion, Morrison Tech Innovation Center expansion, Shimer Square development in Mount Carroll, workforce development, regenerative ag and renewable energy, with federal funds and state grants providing the foundations for the projects.

The two-hour event featured slideshow presentations from leaders in the region and a tour of the Morrison Tech Innovation Center. The event gave state Sen. Win Stoller, R-Germantown Hills, the opportunity to meet with local leaders and innovators and receive updates on the projects.

The presentation started with a review of Whiteside County’s Distressed Communities Index scoring on education, poverty rates, housing vacancy rate, median household income, unemployment rates and job openings. Whiteside County is in the “comfortable” index with a “B” score.

One area of concern was private establishments and industries in the county numbering 1,093 in 2021, a steady decline from 1,240 in 2015. The challenges were attributed to the pandemic, with the county needing to find ways to support people’s dreams to open a business or have college students return to their hometowns.

Jo-Carroll Energy Inc. Director of Broadband Operations Jesse Shekleton discussed fiber optics in the region, with an aim to promote rural prosperity and enhance local economies. The nonprofit energy co-op and Sand Prairie were selected to bring high-speed fiber to portions of Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Carroll and Whiteside counties in 2020. The Connect Whiteside initiative was established to “close the digital divide” by investing in rural broadband and building out the infrastructure.

“Fiber optic is the preferred medium and it is future proof. We want to do it right and do it once,” Shekleton said.

Four grants have been awarded regionally and 11 applications have been submitted, with millions invested and thousands of rural customers connected so far, he said.

Broadband will provide internet services to underserved communities, give farmers access to precision agriculture technology, and it calls for a skilled workforce such as fiber technicians and

network administrators, he said. The biggest barrier so far has been easements and permitting since they can’t afford significant project delays.

“We must work together in a grassroots effort to get the job done,” Shekleton said.

Shekleton and Diana Schuler of BEST Inc. continued the discussion on collaborative fiber broadband workforce development and highlighted an MOU between the NW Illinois Workforce and Innovation Development Group. The key stakeholder team is working to build an adequate workforce for fiber deployment as part of an “economic ecosystem.” Initiatives include Classroom to Career Pathways, use of virtual reality to explore and train, an Apprenticeship Expansion Grant and “earn and learn” apprenticeship programs.

Morrison Tech VP of Academic Affairs Scott Connelly announced the launch of the Pilot OpTIC Path Fiber Technician Course and Certification, which will offer convenient training for residents of a fiber project location, with a target enrollment date in the spring of 2024.

“It’s a natural fit with our network administration and telecommunication base,” he said.

Morrison Tech President Chris Scott continued the discussion on the college’s ability to contribute economically to the region. He reviewed the college’s two current programs of study, learnby-doing philosophy, their accreditations, their graduates’ involvement in local industries and projects, as well as the overall campus setting.

The school will be offering a third concentration in the fall for automation and process control. He also discussed the Innovation Center expansion, slated to start this fall with 6,000 square feet of new space for manufacturing, forging and casting in a “hot shop,” digital space for creators and entrepreneurs and

hands-on classes for community members.

Scott said he also hopes the college is chosen to be an Illinois Regional Technology and Innovation Hub, with the state establishing 20 of these centers to spur innovation.

Fulton Mayor Wendy Ottens presented the “Rural Four” concept to expand U.S. Highway 30 to four lanes of traffic. There are 19.2 miles of two lanes in northwestern Illinois and the idea is to build four lanes between the cities and keep two lanes within city limits.

The state committed $7.5 million to a study in 2006, but put it on the shelf in 2017 after determining there wasn’t enough traffic. A four-lane highway would spur business development and develop tourism opportunities, and truckers would save time on their routes. She said engineers estimated the project cost at $550 million.

The Shimer Square development in Mount Carroll was the next project featured, led by Economic Growth Corporation (GROWTH) of Rock Island. The project will meet child care, entertainment, lodging, workspace and housing needs by redeveloping 17 buildings on 14 acres of the former campus.

Ben Adolph of Merge Impact gave the final presentation on regenerative agriculture. He founded the ag-tech company in 2020 to capture farm and field data such as crop inputs and biodi-

versity to contribute to regenerative supply chains. Adolph worked his family farm in Chadwick and started his company to “do something different” in the field and bring value to farmers. The bootstrap startup developed solutions to measure, track, report and monetize regenerative impacts.

After the presentation, attendees took a tour of the Innovation Center, from the entrepreneurial and artistic creations of students to the 3D printing shop, Maker Station, industrial center, hot zone, woodworking room, sawmill and virtual reality space. Stoller and his team were able to see the results of innovators, ask questions and get ideas on how to help.

“Morrison Technical Institute is one of the best examples I’ve seen of ‘hands-on’ education. Their planned expansion is a testimony to their success and foresight as an outstanding technical college serving Whiteside County and the surrounding area,” Stoller said. “As a small businessman myself, I know the value enterprise zones and economic development brings to the 37th District. I see tremendous momentum in Whiteside County and I look forward to coming alongside the exciting efforts already in progress. It was impressive to see the organized and collaborative regional efforts of Whiteside County and the Whiteside County Economic Development team.”

Margaret was born October 2, 1927 on the family farm in Portland Township, Whiteside County, IL, the daughter of August and Augusta Dhaemers. She married Henry Hicks

preceded her in death in April 2013. Phyllis started as a cook and then managed the former Luciani’s Restaurant in Rapids City, IL, for 35 years.

She enjoyed baking bread and sugar cookies for her family at Christmas. She loved crocheting and cross stitching. She was also an avid Cubs fan. Phyllis was a long-time member of Fairfield United Methodist Church, Port Byron.

Survivors include her daughter, Carole (Tom) Coussens, Rapids City, IL; sons Jim (Rita) Reiling, O’Fallon, MO, Ray Reiling, Davenport, IA; step- daughters, Sherry (Ben) Marruffo, Rock Falls, Shirley Wierenga (John) Huber, Fulton; sister Janet Rhoades Portland, OR; brother Glynn McCaffrey, Portland, OR; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Registration open for Kids Pedal Tractor Pull at Tug Fest

Port Byron’s Tug Fest will be having an inaugural Kids Pedal Tractor Pull at this year’s festival. The event will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, near the fire station and Village Hall in downtown Port Byron.

Whiteside County Farm Bureau Tractor Drive is Aug. 14

Whiteside County Farm Bureau’s 15th annual Tractor Drive will take place on Monday, Aug. 14, with riders leaving Morrison about 8:15 a.m. for a countryside trek to Lyndon and Prophetstown and then back to Morrison.

This “fun” fundraising event helps support the Agriculture in the Classroom program.

Morrison man charged with child sexual abuse

OREGON – A Morrison man who is a science teacher at Clinton (Iowa) High School is accused of sexually abusing a boy in rural Oregon 19 to 20 years ago when the man was involved with the Boy Scouts, Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said.

Jason L. Endress, 44, was arrested about 9:30 a.m. July 25 on a preliminary charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office said on its website.

Endress, who according to online records has no criminal history in Iowa or the Sauk Valley, has been a teacher with the Clinton school district for 22 years.

Superintendent Gary DeLacy was told of the arrest July 25, but was not given any details, he said July 26.

The district will conduct its own investigation before deciding what Endress’ teaching status will be moving forward, DeLacy said.

A 22-year-old Lyndon man was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in late June 2022.

Daymeion Eckhardt-McGlown

Daymeion Eckhardt-McGlown pleaded guilty in Whiteside County court to one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Five other counts were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

Eckhardt-McGlown, who was given credit for 93 days served, could have been sentenced to three to seven years on each count.

He also must register as a sex offender and pay $852 in restitution, among other fines and fees.

On Thursday, a charge of criminal damage to property that was filed in an earlier case was dismissed. He was accused in that case of trying to steal a catalytic converter from a Gold Star FS pickup on Christmas Day.

Fulton Police Dept.’s National Night Out is Saturday

The Fulton Police Department will hold its third annual National Night Out from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Drives Park, 1300 Park Drive. The free and family-friendly event is one of hundreds of events that celebrate police and residents working together to make their communities fun and safe. This is the 40th anniversary of National Night Out events nationwide.

The Fulton Police Department’s event will feature police, fire and EMS vehicles, inflatables and kids’ games, the Fulton Fire Department and kids’ water fights, an OSF helicopter, Illinois National Guard, fitness competitions, military equipment displays and business vendor booths. There will be an Amish bake sale, food vendors and live music. The Stockwells will play from noon to 2:30 p.m., Layton Coffey from 4:30 to 5 p.m. and Nashville recording artist Clayton Shay, sponsored by Mike Menchaca, Country Financial, will play from 6 to 8 p.m.

Fulton police is teaming up with the Fulton Food Pantry to collect monetary donations or nonperishable food items. Superheroes with the Iowa League of Heroes will be making an appearance. The Fulton Police Department won first place in its category for National Night Out last year and officers and community sponsors have been working hard to make this year’s event even bigger and better, so make plans to come on out and experience it!

Sandlin, a home, gift and fashion store, opens in Erie

A new business has opened its doors at 810 Main St. in downtown Erie, offering shoppers home decor, fashion items, gifts and interior design expertise. Sandlin, a name that combines Sandrock and Dillin, is the latest addition to a revitalized downtown and the result of dreaming big, hard work and family ties.

“For two years, I’ve had the vision to open this store here in Erie and it’s finally happening,” owner Ashleigh Sandrock said. She and her husband, Luke, were joined by family and staff at a ribbon-cutting and grand opening with Revitalize Erie on Friday, July 21, and “items have been flying off the shelves” since then.

The store carries florals, candles, soaps, artistic signs, woodcrafts, blankets, pillows, clothing, kitchenware, plushies, trinkets and plenty of perfect gifts for weddings, babies, friends and family. There’s also a line of Fusion mineral chalk-like paints for DIY-ers, with classes still being planned.

The couple credits Betty Warkins for helping them bring the spacious shop back to life. “She took something that probably needed to be torn down and made it amazing! There is no way we could have done this without her,” Ashleigh said of the store’s recent makeover, which has taken several months to complete.

Betty and her late husband, Cliff, have owned the building for many years. It was home to a vet clinic when Ashleigh was young, then Warkins Garden Gate Floral Shop and then Lacy’s Amazing Vase for floral and gifts. Its new life as a home decor shop blends nicely with the building’s roots in the Erie triangle.

“Betty had the vision to make it as original as possible,” Ashleigh said of the interior and exterior remodeling. Original work includes the ceiling, with all the tiles taken down, sandblasted, rehung and repainted. The chimney also is original, with a fireplace mantle built around it. All the accent molding, which mimics the original, was recently added to the front of the building, and the outside will be painted as well. Indoors, there’s a new open layout and new flooring, paint and lighting fixtures that complete the stunning transformation.

“Why Erie? Is it cliche to say these are my people?” Ashleigh said of her inspiration to start the business. “It’s true, everyone knows my mom and me and these truly are our people. Plus, the Revitalize Erie team has made it so easy to want to be a new

business in town.”

She also mentioned the amount of people from out of town that come to Erie, whether to go to Harvest Bakery & More for a meal or meetings, to Rise Up’s unique coffee and ice cream combo, or shopping for fresh florals and fun finds at Blooms 2. She hopes Erie’s visitors will add “shopping at Sandlin” to their list.

Ashleigh was raised in Erie and Luke in Tampico. He runs the Cornerstone Agency in Morrison and Tampico, and she used to teach at Erie Elementary and coached cheerleaders before having kids and taking time for them. She also was a photographer and worked at a scrapbook store throughout high school and college.

“I guess I’ve always had that creative drive in me,” Ashleigh said of the latest venture. She credits her mom, Tami Dillin, for helping with the creative side of the shop. They spent “many hours in many stores and boutiques to know what they did and didn’t want.” She also thanked her dad, Gail, for getting things ready, such as repairs to display pieces, deliveries, pickups and more.

Local vendors include Marquis Soaps of Clinton, Iowa, with a line of soaps, bubble baths and bath bombs, and Home Nest Candles of Iowa, and more local goods are being sought. Ashleigh will be adding new and unique inventory every week, with her young daughter helping with shopping and her two boys bringing the muscles for deliveries.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

The shop will be part of Boutique Crawl 2023 stretching from Dixon to Fulton on Saturday, Aug. 5.

Fulton’s prospects for industrial development looked a great deal brighter with the announcement that three Fulton businessmen have bought a tract of 300 acres from the Northwestern Railroad with the intention of developing it as an industrial park. Purchasers are Joseph Chester, Alfred Den Besten and Richard Kummerer, owners of Drives Inc.

Dodge dealership to show the auto to people in that city.

Tom Railsback was one of several concerned congressmen from the Midwest who met with Dr. John Dunlop, director of the Cost of Living Council. They charged that the freeze on beef prices is both unfair and damaging. Railsback expressed his views to Dunlop and pointed out that singling out beef in the food industry to the exclusion of all others is a tragic mistake and hurts both the consumer and the meat industry.

After five years as principal of Fulton High School, John Bevan has resigned to accept the position of principal of Freeport High School. His resignation was accepted at a special board meeting. He said he would commute between Fulton and Freeport daily for a time and would assist in every way possible in making the transition to a new principal smooth and orderly.

There was great rejoicing as officials of the Community Christian School and the River Bend School District made the final step in the transfer of the Annex building from the River Bend School District to the Christian school. July 28, 1993

Many have labeled the midsummer high water problem as the Great Flood of 1993. It came in two separate crests and was the second-highest flood in recorded history.

Sue Kenworthy was on duty at Casey’s when the store was robbed at gunpoint. She was not supposed to be working, but was substituting for another girl. Her quick action calling 911 helped solve the case only 13 minutes later. The suspects, who were listed as teens, traveled to Morrison, where they were caught.

July 30, 2003

Sgt. Kyle Van Pelt of the U.S. Air Force returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. Van Pelt was deployed to Romania two months before the war in Iraq began. His unit went into Iraq on March 28 and they were stationed in northern Iraq, which is prominently Kurdish. He reported the Kurdish people were very happy to see the Americans. The closest he ever got to the

front lines was about 8 miles.

The Whiteside County Fair Board has chosen Randy Holesinger (Quality Ready Mix Concrete Company) as the 2003 Friend of the Fair honoree. Quality Ready Mix Concrete Company has two locations, one in Fulton and one in Morrison. The board offers its sincere thanks and appreciation for Holesinger’s friendship and for his donation of time and materials to the Whiteside County Fair.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos announced the Senate Appropriations Committee approved funding for the activation of the Thomson Correctional facility at the level that was requested by President Barack Obama in his fiscal 2014 budget proposal that was delivered to Congress last April. The full activation of Thomson prison is expected to take two years at a cost of $25 million in fiscal 2014 for upgrades and renovations and $168 million in fiscal 2015 for equipment and staffing.

3-day working farm show draws farmers and visitors to Springhill Road in Erie

‘Storytelling from the heart’ in Erie

An inspirational storyteller from California who’s gained a following for his messages about the reassuring kindnesses of everyday people will be making a special stop in Erie next week. Neal Foard, a popular creator on YouTube and Instagram, will be in town thanks to the efforts of Tim Possley, host of the “Uncle Tim Show” on WQUD Vintage Radio.

Possley often plays Foard’s recordings on the air, calling them “Warm Fuzzies.” He crowdfunded locally for Foard’s two-day visit, which will include a studio session and meet and greet. “People love him,” Possley said. “Really, the world needs more Neal Foards!”

According to his website, Foard is an award-winning advertising and marketing creative professional with leadership experience in advertising, experiential marketing and client-side brand development. He’s skilled in creative strategy and business pursuit and has a particular love of talent development and team building. He spent 25 years in the business and has created award-winning campaigns for brands such as Sony and Lexus.

Foard said his visit to Erie is “thanks to the eager relentlessness of disc

jockey Tim Possley, who’s been so diligent about making arrangements, I couldn’t say no.” He’ll be on the Uncle Tim Show about 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, and at Harvest Bakery and More on Thursday, Aug.

10. Come early and have dinner, with Foard planning to speak about 7 p.m. The rest of the night will be a meet and greet and sharing of a few stories that people haven’t heard.

The Ancestor Project

As one of the final projects of the year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone else that they could research and learn more about to write a story telling about their life. Students conducted interviews with family members, and some were able to gather additional resources and pictures to help tell their story. While there were many great stories written, not all will be published.

This project was a collaborative effort between students’ history classes, with Mrs. Kruthoff and Mr. Armstrong, English class, with Mrs. Wolf, and their families. It was inspired by the original project that longtime English teacher, Mrs. Wiersema, made a tradition in her eighth grade class.

Students enjoyed getting to know more about their families and many were surprised to learn how interesting their families were. We hope you all will enjoy their stories, too!

Clarence Junior Smith

Have you ever lost someone? I lost my maternal great-grandpa before I even met him. My great-grandpa is an inspiration because he did many great things. He lost all his fingers on his right hand. Finally, he enlisted in the Army and ended up helping repair Korea after the war. Clarence Smith is an amazing person and grandpa because of his childhood, adult life and his later years.

Clarence Smith is an amazing person and grandpa because of his childhood. My maternal great-grandpa was born on Jan. 17, 1937, in Morrison. His parents were Clarence and Helen Smith. He was named after his dad. He was the youngest of 10. He had three sisters and six brothers. He grew up in a house on Fenton Road that his dad made from scratch. Their family had a huge potato farm. Clarence loved playing around on the farm. There were a bunch of cats that lived on the farm and he would mess around with them every day. At age 5, he started kindergarten at the old Fenton schoolhouse. Clarence went to this school up until eighth grade. Then he started going to Fulton High School and graduated from Fulton. During his time at Fulton High School, he was a great student and always did what he was told. He wasn’t really involved in any activities, but he was part of the FFA. Every day after school since sixth grade he would help with the family potato farm. After he graduated high

school, he enlisted in the Army right away. As you can see, Clarence was an amazing person and grandpa because of his childhood.

Not only did Clarence’s childhood affect who he was, but so did his adult life. After high school, he started training for the Army at age 18. He never actually went into war but he ended up helping to rebuild Korea after the war went through there. After he helped to rebuild Korea, he came home and ended up meeting my great-grandma, Donna Jean Pitts. They ended up getting married on Oct. 24, 1959. After they got married, they moved into a trailer together. They ended up having five kids, three girls and two boys.

Clarence worked many part-time jobs. One of the jobs was grinding feed for animals. One time, he got his hand too close to the grinder and lost all his fingers on his right hand. This made him have to relearn how to do everything with his left hand. After spending time letting his hand heal, his life basically went back to normal and he continued with his part-time jobs.

Sadly during the Korean War, the military handed out free cigarettes to the soldiers. Clarence got addicted to them and did not stop smoking even after the war. This led to him being very sick. After he got sick, he stopped working and his five kids started taking most of the responsibilities around the house. It is obvious that Clarence’s adult life helped to make him a great man and grandpa.

Clarence lived a full and fulfilling life. At the age of 49, he retired due to getting sick. He was diagnosed with esophagus cancer. Clarence died on June 23, 1988, when he was only 51.

While doing this project, I feel like I got to learn a lot about Clarence. I was able to learn about how much of a kind person he was. I never really knew anything about him but I love what I have learned. I feel a lot closer to my great-grandpa. Overall, I loved this project.

In conclusion, Clarence was kind, he saved many people, and he was a very hard worker. Clarence had a very fun, fulfilling childhood, which affected his life greatly. He also had an amazing adult life. He was a great, kind and responsible adult. When he died, he was missed greatly by his family and friends. Clarence J. Smith was a great man and I am sure would be a great grandpa. I wish that I could have met him and I loved that I got to learn more about him.

Imagine getting home from school to find electricity running through your house. This is a story that my great-grandpa loved telling. He always had the best advice. He was a hard worker and he never let anyone down. Cleon Eyrich was an icon in the family because of his childhood, the experiences of his adult life and the fruitful later years he had.

Cleon David Eyrich is an icon in my family because of the upbringing he had in his childhood. Cleon is my paternal great-grandfather. Cleon was born on Nov. 30, 1924. He was born in West Reading, Pennsylvania. His parents were Clarence Eyrich and Elmira Eyrich. He had six siblings. He moved

While he was doing that as a kid, he found a Native American ax head near a stream he was trapping by. After he passed away, his children discovered the ax head was from times before Christ.

Cleon was always a hard worker, even as a child. He farmed with his dad while he was growing up. His dad was the first person in the area to buy a twine bailer, which he enjoyed using to bail hay and straw when he was growing up. He had to walk a long distance to go to school, even when it was freezing cold. He loved telling the story of when he was in high school and he came home to find electricity running through his house. Can you imagine living without electricity? As you can see, Cleon Eyrich was an icon because of the experiences of his childhood.

affect who he was, but so did his adult life. After he graduated high school, he married Jean C. McKenna. He had nine kids whose names are Darla, Joan, Elizabeth, Collen, David, Paul, Dan, Mark and Diana. He raised pigs and cows and also grew corn and soybeans for 52 years in areas around Prophetstown. He enjoyed traveling and fishing. Some places he liked to travel were Minnesota and Florida. He loved restoring International Harvester tractors. He would bring them to the Whiteside County Fair and also to many parades across the region. It is obvious that Cleon’s adult life helped to make him an icon in the family.

Cleon lived a full and fulfilling life. At the age of 70 he officially retired. After he retired, he traveled to Florida several times and also went on an Alaskan cruise. He also went fishing in Minnesota several times. One time he went in a hot air balloon, which he loved to tell stories about. He enjoyed

riding in the tractor with my dad because he loved looking at the new equipment and seeing the improvements from when he was a kid. He sadly passed away at the age of 98 at Allure Nursing Home in Prophetstown after a long life. It is clear that Cleon Eyrich had a huge impact on others.

I did this project because I wanted to learn more about my family’s history. I learned that you have to work hard and be determined to be successful. I also learned that my great-grandfather was an amazing man all throughout his life.

Cleon, my paternal great-grandfather, was an icon in my family. Cleon’s childhood contributed to the icon he was. Additionally, his adult life also impacted the person he was. Cleon’s retirement and later years also played into the amazing man he was. It is clear that Cleon was the greatest great-grandfather ever.

Mustangs look to improve on last year’s 5-5 mark with new head coach

MORRISON – The Morrison football team took a big step forward last season, improving from 1-7 the season before to a playoff-qualifying 5-5.

This year, it hopes to keep that momentum going.

With first-year head coach Nathan Vandermyde, an experienced lineup and plenty of senior leadership, the Mustangs feel they’re ready for the next step.

“This year is going to be a good one, I believe. There’s a lot of tough opponents, we’re a smaller school, but we returned a lot [of players], so I’m looking forward to this year,” senior running back/safety Chase Newman said. “We had a lot of young kids [in 2021 and 2022]. We were young, we grew. We’ve got a lot of seniors this year, and I think that we’re a 7-2 team this year.”

“I think we’re able to build on that. Last year was a good season,” junior quarterback Colton Bielema said. “We made a lot of improvements. We’re going to get better this offseason and do better this year.”

As a first-year starter at quarterback, Bielema has some big shoes to fill. Last year, the Mustangs were led by Danny Mouw, a second-team allTRAC West pick on both sides of the ball. In 2022, Mouw went 65-for-114 passing with 14 touchdowns and one interception. His 1,180 passing yards was the second-highest single-season total in program history.

But now it’s Bielema’s turn. And Vandermyde has complete confidence in him.

“Colton Bielema will be coming in as the quarterback. He’s been behind Danny Mouw the past two years, so it’s a little bit of a learning curve for him, but he’s a great kid, smart kid,” Vandermyde said. “He’s picking up on the offense, he’s known the offense for the

past two years, so I have high hopes for him.”

With three of the top offensive weapons returning and all but two starters back, Bielema should have plenty of help this year.

Morrison welcomes back Newman, an honorable mention Class 1A IHSFCA all-state pick and second-team all-TRAC West RB who rushed for 327 yards and a touchdown on 39 carries and caught 28 passes for 559 yards and six touchdowns last year.

It also returns sophomore running

back Brady Anderson, who racked up 660 yards and 10 touchdowns on 103 carries and caught five passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns last season as a freshman.

Senior Carson Strating, a first-team all-TRAC West linebacker and honorable mention running back, is back as well. He rushed for 588 yards and seven touchdowns on 159 carries last season.

With so much speed at the skill positions, the Mustangs hope to create consistent matchup problems.

“I think our speed’s going to be what

most people struggle with. Our speed is going to kill,” Strating said. “I think our speed is going to be the strongest part of our offense. And on defense, we’re going to be fast and strong.”

“We’re going to have speed, so our outside game is going to be really, really fast,” Newman said. “And our passing is going to be right there, too.”

So far, the coaching transition has been a smooth one for the Mustangs. The players already knew Vandermyde, a former assistant coach.

“It’s been great. He’s been in the program for quite some time now and he played college himself at North Central, so he’s a great football mind,” Newman said. “I’m looking forward to this year.”

“It’s been great,” Bielema said. “He’s a great coach, and we all love him.”

Every year, there’s tough competition in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference on both sides of the ball. This year, the Mustangs expect Princeton and Rockridge to be their toughest opponents, but they know they’ll need to be ready for everyone.

“It’s a tough schedule. We’ve got some big bruisers on the schedule that are tough year in, year out,” Vandermyde said. “Princeton is a perennial playoff team that’s been really good in the Three Rivers. Rockridge is always tough. Practically every single team presents their own challenges. It’s going to be a tough schedule.”

“[We want to] win the conference. I think a big one is to end up beating Princeton in Week 2 – that’s a goal that we’re looking forward to and a lot of us are excited for it,” Newman said. “A lot of people are counting us out right now, but I think we have a real great chance to win that one. And another goal is make a run in the playoffs. That’s our big goal right there.”

No Worries to take outdoor stage at SVRC on Aug. 6

Spring Valley Reformed Church, 10960 Spring Valley Road in Fulton, welcomes No Worries to the outdoor stage at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6. Please join us in the valley for an evening of praise and worship.

No Worries is a local bluegrass gospel band that was formed in 2019. They specialize in playing for churches, festivals, local celebrations, parties and nursing homes.

Stockton resident Terry O’Malley, a seasoned musician, comes from a musical family. He plays banjo, guitar, mandolin and bass. His masculine harmonies enhance the female vocals, which makes the band’s three-part harmony solid. The band’s lead vocalist, Mary Jean Hammer, accompanies herself on the mandolin or guitar. Her heartfelt passion and sweet voice brings a solid foundation to the group. She resides near Apple River, where she and her husband own a family business. Also from Stockton, Mary Berryhill, brings the bass beat and adds exciting vocal leads as well as some very tight harmonies, which perfectly rounds out the group. Berryhill also is the booking agent and business manager.

The band plays many genres of music, including gospel, old-time country favorites, folk, pop and old time rock ‘n’ roll. The three love to share their joy of music with others and spreading God’s word. The concert will be moved indoors in case of inclement weather. A freewill offering will be taken.

Morrison UMC to feature Dolly Parton music in August

The Morrison United Methodist Church will be using the themes from Dolly Parton songs to inspire worship during August. Come and tap your toes, sing along, clap your hands or hum the tune. You are welcome to this music-inspired worship featuring the songs and tunes of the country and gospel legend.

Pastor Sun-ah Kang’s main purpose will be to retrieve the mysterious holy language of Love Divine through Parton’s lyrics and songs. As these beloved songs are both sung and talked about, may each of us learn to speak through our actions and faith like Parton.

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustee s of the Fulton Fire Protection District, County of Whiteside, State of Illinois, has prepared or caused to be prepared in tentative form, an Annual Budget and Appropriation Ordinance for the fiscal year 20232024, and the Sec of the Board has made the same conveniently available to public inspection for at least 30 days prior to the final action thereon, and

WHEREAS, a public hearing was held as to such Annual Budget and Appropria tion Ordinance on the 12th day of July at 6:00 p.m , notice of which hearing was given at least thirty (30) days prior thereto by publication in the Fulton Journal, a newspaper of general circulation published within said District, and all other legal requirements have been complied with:

NOW, THEREFORE, be it ordained by the Board of Trustees of the Fulton Fire Protection District, County of Whiteside, State of Illinois, as follows:

SE CTION ONE: That the fiscal year of this Fire Protection District is hereby fixed and declar ed to be from May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2024.
