Clinton Symphony Orchestra to begin 71st season in September

SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

CLINTON, Iowa – The Clinton Symphony Orchestra will begin its 71st annual concert season with music by master composers Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Mozart, as well as pieces by lesser known composers.

“We shouldn’t assume that they were the only ones composing great music during those times,” said Brian Dollinger, music director. “Each of them had contemporaries who were finding their own successes at the same time.”

The concert season opens Sept. 21, featuring Beethoven’s First Symphony, along with an opera overture from the same decade by French composer Etienne Nicolas Mehul and a Concerto Grosso for strings and piano by Ernest Bloch. Because of construction at Clinton High School, the concert will be performed at Clinton’s Zion Lutheran Church.

On Nov. 2, the orchestra will play in the Centennial Auditorium at Sterling High School. For several seasons, Community State Bank has sponsored a bus from Clinton through Fulton and Morrison to this concert. Information and reservations for the bus can be made by calling 563-503-4886. The concert program will include Beethoven’s Second Symphony, with an overture by Mendelssohn, and another by Basque composer Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga.

The annual Holiday Concert by the symphony also will be at Zion Lutheran Church in Clinton. It will include music associated with the season and a holiday singalong. The date is Dec. 14.

The symphony’s traditional Music

of Friendships program of music for small ensembles also will be at Zion Lutheran Church on Jan. 12, 2025.

The Family Concert on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 23, 2025, will be at the Morrison High School auditorium and will feature Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, which is probably his bestknown symphony. The program also will include an overture by Anton Bruckner and a solo performance with the orchestra by an area high school musician chosen from the annual Young Artist Auditions.

With the expectation of the completion of the new Durgin Performing Arts Center at Clinton High School, plans have been made for the orchestra and Clinton’s RiverChor to perform Mozart’s final work, his Requiem, during this concert season.

Fundraising and season ticket sales are underway at www.clintonsymphony.org or by mailing P.O. Box 116, Clinton, IA 52732.

Ovarian cancer is fifth cause of cancer-related deaths for women

Ovarian cancer occurs in only a very small percentage of women, yet it is the fifth cause of cancer-related deaths in women behind lung, breast, colon and pancreatic cancers. The rate of ovarian cancers remains unchanged over several years, largely because screening tools have not proved very effective for this condition.

Most cases of ovarian cancer occur in women older than 50. The small percentage that occurs at an earlier age usually has a more favorable prognosis.

Risk factors include family history and some related genetic syndromes such as BRCA-1 or BRCA-2. Other increased risks include the delaying of childbearing, early onset of menses, endometriosis and estrogen replacement therapy for more than five years, the high fat diet and late menopause. Things that may decrease the risk include breastfeeding for 18 months or more, early menopause, multiple pregnancies and oral contraceptive use.

Interestingly, tubal ligation and hysterectomy, even without the ovaries removed, reduces one’s risk.

The diagnosis often is delayed

because of nonspecific symptoms. These include abdominal fullness or bloating, back pain, constipation, diarrhea, early fullness, fatigue, nausea, pelvic pain and urinary symptoms. A physical examination sometimes is unrevealing. It may include abdominal masses or lymph gland enlargement.

Evaluation studies may include the general metabolic studies and the more specific study known as the serum CA-125. While there are some reports out that this is a good screen for ovarian cancer, such is not the case.

First, there are many states that

may be associated with an increased CA-125 level including pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, menses and even pregnancy. Ascites or fluid in the stomach and other cancers also may alter CA-125 levels.

A transvaginal doppler ultrasound may be employed if there is suspicion. It should be noted that both the ultrasound and CA-125 measurement may detect ovarian cancer in an earlier stage in high-risk women, but they are not effective in detecting ovarian cancer early enough to improve the clinical outcome.

MORRISON – The Morrison Garden Club awarded the June 2024 Featured Garden to Dani Mills at 12880 Masters Drive, Morrison.

A recent visit to the home was a special treat for this flower lover. Joe and Dani Mills led a delightful walk through the yard and path down to the pond. Everywhere you turn is an infusion of color. Joe was quick to point out all the credit goes to Dani, but you can tell he also takes pride in his meticulously mowed yard and paths.

The Mills family moved to their beautiful home 10 years ago. The first year they had the hardscape designed and redone by 5 Star Landscape & Design.

Being the busy mom of two young children did not allow Dani much time or energy for outside activities for a few years. Now that the children, Ivy, 12, and Drake, 10, are older, Dani has gotten more serious about her flowers. Dani’s interest quickly expanded, filling more and more spaces with annuals and colorful perennials.

She starts buying early each spring to find the color selections she likes to use. She spends hours planting the more than 100 new annuals in her flower beds and pots. She often is

accompanied by the family’s two cats, Paul and Ester. There are many beautiful perenni-

als around the yard. One in particular caught my eye – a beautiful Hydrangea bush on the corner of the house.

Dani laughingly told me she recently had to gather the pots into smaller areas to make it easier for someone to water while they were on vacation. She was surprised to realize there were more than 60 pots. Many of these plants find their way inside for the winter.

by mid-August. This year, she played with some new color combinations. They are really quite lovely.

About three years ago, Joe and Dani decided to till up some areas of their two lots. They planted lots of wildflower seeds in hopes of producing wildflower/ pollinator gardens. There are now some large areas of several colors of coneflowers, gaillardia, daisies, salvia and bee balm. It is all so beautiful, filled in with delicate Queen Ann’s Lace and grasses. The huge areas of wildflowers are divided by well-tended walking paths down to the pond.

Notice the wicker planter with a full thick growth of a mixture of purple and green Wandering Jew vines. Take it from me, it is not easy to keep all these plants so healthy from year to year.

As is obvious with the explosion of color, Dani has a fondness for petunias. The huge pink supertunias are her favorite and spill out into the yard

Walking up the path and back into the yard you are greeted with another explosion of color. There are large sections of zinnias glowing in the sunshine. These were started with several bags of seeds that grew and bloomed very well the first year. Dani now collects seeds through the summer and fall to plant again the next spring. What a labor of love!

Dani was presented a $75 gift certificate In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Morrison Garden Club, which was founded in December 1948.

These zinnias are part of the Mills’ landscaping.

The Ancestor Project

As one of the final projects of the year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone else that they could research and learn more about in order to write a story telling about their life. Students conducted interviews with family members and some were able to gather additional resources and pictures to help tell their story. While there were many great stories written, not all will be published.

The project was a collaborative effort between students’ history classes with Mrs. Kruthoff and Mr. Armstrong, English class with Mrs. Wolf and their families. It was inspired by the original project that longtime English teacher Mrs. Wiersema made a tradition in her eighth grade class.

Students enjoyed getting to know more about their families and many were surprised to learn how interesting their families were. We hope you will enjoy their stories, too.

Steven Ray Black

Have you ever wanted to live in the country and ride three-wheelers every day because Steven Ray Black did that. Steve is the best grandpa because he rode three-wheelers, he worked for 37 years, he owns expensive cars and he doesn’t smoke.

Steven Ray Black was born on Nov. 15, 1964. His father was Patrick Ray Black and his mother was Lois Jane Jones. Steve’s siblings are Kristi Lashelle and Lisa Bormann. Steve liked to fish, hunt and ride three-wheelers when he was young.

Steve grew up in Clinton, Iowa, and went to school in Clinton. Steve then moved to Texas for a few years to live with his cousins and he went to school in Texas and everyone would call him Boston Blacky, which

gave him the nickname Blacky.

Steve has never really liked sports but he has always liked driving. Steve went to driver’s ed at 14, but he failed his first year. In his second year of driving, he passed easily. When Steve turned 16, he had saved up enough money from when he was working earlier, so he bought a Pontiac Trans Am. After he passed driver’s ed and bought the Trans Am, he was pulled over 13 times in two months. He talked to his dad one day after getting pulled over and his dad advised him to get rid of the Trans Am and Steve agreed.

He loved to fish with his dad, and when his cousins came up to Iowa, he would hunt with them in Wisconsin. Steve worked at a funeral home when he was 14 to make money. He also worked at Rastrelli’s restaurant in Clinton washing dishes and he hated it. Steve saved coins to make a little bit of extra money when he grew up. He still saves coins.

In Steve’s adult life, he married Angie Black and they’ve been married for almost 40 years. Angie is the only person Steve has married. They had two daughters, Susan Bach and Corinthia Black. Steve had many jobs when he was young and also many jobs when he was an adult.

He worked at Target unloading trucks and loading shelves, but it got really bad because they weren’t allowed to talk much, which made him move on to working at Chemplex. He worked at Chemplex for a few years, but he mainly worked at the nuclear plant and he worked there for 37 years. In the beginning, the nuclear plant was really bad and he had to work full face in rubber gear and he said it was really hot, but later he got to work in a ventilated office. His hobbies were fishing, a little bit of hunting, cars and building things for himself and for other people. When Steve saved up enough

money, he bought a big-block 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS, which he bought for about $20,000. It was later worth $90,000, but he made a bad mistake of selling it too early. Also, when he got married to Angie Black, he bought multiple cars in the same year. Adding to this, when his daughters turned 16, he bought both of them brand-new cars. When his daughter Corinthia graduated from school, she went on to get a degree in marine biology.

In Steve’s later life he moved a lot. Steve mainly moved to houses that were either in Clinton or in towns near Clinton. He used to live in Erie for a little bit when he was younger, but then he left to move into a few other houses but he ended up back in Erie. Steve was one of the first ones, if not the first, to make good money in his family. He made his money by starting work at a young age and investing in stocks early and getting out at the perfect time. Every once in a while Steve has a really good chance to make a lot of money in stocks, but he ends up missing it or he thinks it’ll keep going up but then it goes down.

One of Steve’s lifelong friends is John Krutoff, who is Mrs. Krutoff’s husband. Steve and John first met when they worked in the nuclear plant together. They hunted together in Alaska, Wisconsin and many other places. They would always go on trips together but they don’t anymore, but they are still very close friends. Another friend that Steve has is Dar. Dar is a guy Steve used to work with at the nuclear plant. Dar is hopefully retiring soon and we hope to go fishing with him. Dar has a lake that he lets me, my grandpa, and my friends fish at and he has some very large fish in it.

One of Steve’s hardships is that he lost both of his parents. He lost his father in 2017 because he hit his head

and it did too much damage to him. He lost his mother a few months ago because she had lung cancer, but she didn’t have it because she smoked. She had it because her parents smoked when she lived with them.

Steve likes to spend his little free time fishing with me in the spring, summer and fall. In the winter, we usually end up going somewhere to shop. Something he always tells me and my friends is to never smoke, never drink, never gamble and never do drugs if you want to have nice stuff. He retired in January 2022.

The reason Steve doesn’t get much free time is because he always helps everyone because he is one of the only people with money, skills and is willing to help. Steve has never drunk, smoked, gambled or done drugs once. One lesson that he has told me and my friends is to never get a really nice car for a first car unless you have the money. Always buy a crappy car so you can beat it up. He also says to never get a rear-wheel drive car because if you go on ice with one you can easily slide off and crash. He also says to try something, even if you only like it a little bit.

I see things better now because I know him more. I feel way closer because he told me a lot of stuff I didn’t know about his childhood. A life lesson I learned is to respect people you grow up with, especially if they’re older. I really liked the project because it was fun to get to know my grandpa better.

Something Steve taught me is to help people out if they’re uninformed instead of making fun of them. He also says to not let people be mean to you and to either tell someone or do something about it. Act nice to everyone, even if you don’t like them. Some people are plain rude, so just ignore them instead of encouraging them to keep being rude. If someone is rude it’s almost never your fault.
