Volleyball
Newman def. Erie-Prophetstown 29-27,
25-19: After a wild nip-and-tuck first set, the Comets topped the Panthers in straight sets in a Three Rivers crossover match in Erie.
Fulton def. Amboy 25-9, 25-9: The Steamers cruised to an NUIC South win at home against the Clippers.
Fulton def. Milledgeville 25-18, 25-22:
The Steamers won an NUIC South road match in straight sets.
Annaka Hackett had nine kills, three aces and three digs for Fulton, while Ava Bowen added seven kills, four digs and a block. Brooklyn Brennan stuffed the stat sheet with 11 assists, seven kills, seven digs and two aces, Miraya Pessman added 13 assists, six digs and an ace, and Resse Germann chipped in 15 digs and two assists. Reese Dykstra had two kills, two digs, an ace and a block, and Kamryn Sikkema added a kill, a block and a dig for the Steamers.
Fulton 4-1 in final tourney: The Steamers won four of their five matches at the Stillman Valley tournament to close out the regular season.
In pool play, Fulton topped Parkview Christian 20-9, 20-6; Earlville 20-16, 20-16; and Stillman 20-9, 20-16. The Steamers then topped Lena-Winslow 26-24, 15-25, 15-11 in the semifinals before falling to Aquin 25-7, 25-16 in the finale.
Annaka Hackett had 27 kills, 14 digs, six blocks and five aces on the day, while Brooklyn Brennan finished with 46 assists, 27 digs, 19 kills and three aces. Miraya Pessman had 43 assists, 23 digs, 21 kills and six aces, and Ava Bowen added 21 kills, 11 digs, six aces and three blocks. Reese Dykstra had 14 kills, four aces and two blocks, and Resse Germann chipped in 43 digs, seven assists and four aces for the Steamers.
Football
Morrison 27, Erie-Prophetstown 14: In a showdown between two 4-4 teams looking to become playoff eligible, the Mustangs pulled away in the second and third quarters to win the Three Rivers Rock contest.
Danny Mouw was 11-for-17 passing for 183 yards and three touchdowns for Morrison (5-4, 4-2), with Daeshaun McQueen catching six passes for 114 yards and two TDs. The Mustangs scored a touchdown in each quarter, and held Erie-Prophetstown (4-5, 1-4) scoreless in the second and third.
Brady Anderson ran 15 times for 59 yards, Chase Newman had 14 rushes for 56 yards, and Carson Strating had 14 carries for 51 yards and a touchdown. Newman also had two catches for 37 yards, Strating had two receptions for 30 yards, and Karder White had a 2-yard touchdown catch for Morrison.
Jase Grunder had 59 yards and a touchdown on 17 rushes, and Jeremiah Kochevar added six carries for 47 yards and a score. Kochevar also went 3-for-7 passing for 15 yards and an interception for the Panthers.
Morrison (5-4) will play Ottawa-Marquette (8-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ottawa-Marquette.
Fulton 48, Dakota 26: The Steamers answered every time the Indians scored in the first half on their way to an NUIC victory on the road.
Fulton (7-2, 7-1 NUIC) took a 7-0 lead just 11 seconds into the game, then scored again 1:36 after Dakota had cut it to 7-6 late in the first quarter. The Steamers scored 1:21 into the second quarter, then after Dakota cut it to 20-12 just 18 seconds later, Fulton scored 1:05 after that to take a 27-12 lead with 9:16 left before halftime. The Steamers then scored with 4:19 and 1:25 left in the second quarter to stretch their lead to 41-12.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, then Fulton made it 48-12 with 6:12 left in the game. Dakota tacked on touchdowns with 4:46 to play and 1:28 remaining to cap the scoring.
Fulton (7-2) plays Aurora Christian (5-4) at 2 p.m. Saturday in Fulton.
