Sterling schools’ theater director recognized for years of service in performing arts
By BRANDON CLARK bclark@shawmedia.com
STERLING – Sterling Public Schools’ theater director has been nominated for a state honor.
seven years running a theater in Alaska.
Timothy Schlegel recently was nominated by the state of Illinois for a National Federation of State High School Associations Outstanding Theater Educator Award for his work in the performing arts. Schlegel has been the director of theater for Sterling Public Schools for the past 26 years.
“I was working for Augustana as a tech director for the concert hall when the school started going through a bunch of budget cuts and I got let go,” Schlegel said. “My wife’s aunt and uncle live in Seattle and they saw this job advertisement. So I sent my resume and interviewed over the phone and the next thing I know, we’re moving up there.”
Timothy Schlegel
“I’ve been here as long as the [Centennial] auditorium,” Schlegel said. “It was built in 1998 and I was hired to open it. I’ve been here ever since.”
A Morrison native, Schlegel said he has been involved in theater and music since high school.
“Morrison High School had a strong theater and music program,” Schlegel said. “I was always very involved and that continued as I went on to college at Augustana. It was a lot of fun.”
After college, Schlegel spent almost

Free community meals continue in Fulton
FULTON – CrossView Church, 703 14th Ave. in Fulton, offers a free community meal called The Table every Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.
The upcoming menu:
Nov. 6: Hot dogs with chili, nachos and cheese, corn, brownies and Rice Krispies bars. Nov. 13: Pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, chips, applesauce, Oreo dessert. Nov. 20: Spaghetti casserole, Jimmy John’s bread, green beans, applesauce, assorted desserts.
Nov. 27: Creamy potato and chicken
Schlegel’s return to the Sauk Valley area happened much the same way.
“My best friend Mike McCoy, who used to be the band director at Sterling, called me and said, ‘We’re building this theater in Sterling,’ ” Schlegel said. “So I came home for the summer when they were just getting ready to build and he took me to a meeting where they were looking at the blueprints with Pete Dillon and some other people. I stayed in touch and interviewed for the job and they hired me. I’ve been here ever since.”
Schlegel also is the board president for Woodlawn Arts Academy in Sterling.
“I can’t remember exactly when it was, but at one point, Sterling Public Schools went through a huge budget cut and laid off a ton of people,” Schlegel said. “We wanted to make sure that kids were still being given opportunities for theater. So I worked hard with Wood -
lawn to try to offer things that we couldn’t do anymore.”
At that time, Schlegel said Dixon’s Sauk Valley Community College was still offering theater and Woodlawn and SPS were struggling to find help building sets for their productions.
“No one could afford full-time help,” Schlegel said. “So I came up with the idea to create a theater alliance between the three of us. We combined our resources and created two new jobs. Now we have a person who does all the lighting and sound for all three entities. Since I’m getting ready to retire in a couple of years, I’ve flipped from being the director to the scenic designer/overseer of the area.”
Schlegel said he is grateful to receive the NFHS award, but the real honor is getting to help grow Sterling’s theater programs and working with the children.
“Our theater department has extra things that a lot of other schools don’t, like moving lights and some of the different technology because the Sterling Schools Foundation has supported us so well,” Schlegel said. “So we can offer kids an opportunity to do something that they normally can’t do a lot of. Getting to see how a production ends and what the students have accomplished, that’s my biggest reward.”

Deanie was born on September 14th, 1928, in Morrison, Illinois, to her parents, Don and Kathryn (Rose) Zuidema.
Deanie attended Green Valley Grade School and Morrison High School for three years and then went to beauty school to fulfill her dream of becoming a beautician. She graduated from beauty school in 1947 in Sterling, Illinois. After schooling, she met the love of her life, Donald Damhoff, at the local 4H Animal Fair while Don was home from military leave. They married on April 14th, 1948, in Morrison, Illinois.
In 1950, they moved to their farmhouse on Hazel Road in Morrison and began their working careers. Don farmed his land for over 40 years while Deanie worked out of her home doing hair and raising her children. Choosing to raise their family in the suburbs, they were longtime residents of Bolingbrook, then Joliet before settling in Prophetstown to live out their retirement years. They lived on the Rock River and enjoyed every bit of small-town life. Butch drove semi-trucks for over 40 years and hauled everything imaginable. He retired from the big rigs, as a hazmat, tanker driver. However, Butch could not curb the wanderlust in his heart. He began hauling recreational trailers with his dually pickup soon after. Berdie joined him on many of these trips. After they made their delivery, they would turn the trip back home into a vacation. Butch’s goal was to show Berdie each of the lower 48 states. He did, too! They really fell in love with Texas. After Butch finally stopped driving for hire, they kept a trailer at a RV park in Mathis, Texas where they lived during the cold months as “Winter Texans”. Butch relocated to Ottawa to be closer to family after the loss of Berdie in 2023. He was proud of the work he was putting into his new place, making it feel like a home. Foods that you eat may affect brain function
Dr. David Perlmutter, who is the author of the book “Grain Brain,” has written extensively about things that may inflame the brain.
When something is inflamed, it does not function as well. Foods that cause inflammation to the brain are associated with memory disturbance and brain fog along with other forms of cognitive decline.
There’s also weight gain and an increased risk for type 2 diabetes. The risk for anxiety and depression also rises.
The No. 1 food to avoid in any form is processed food. Think of TV dinners as the classic. The list also includes most breakfast cereals, most fruit juices, most chips and ice cream. Another source of foods to avoid is those with added sugar. This includes
GLIMPSES OF THE PAST: FULTON
YOUR HEALTH
Stephen D. Harrison, M.D.
candy, cakes, pies and cookies.
The next food to avoid includes unhealthy fats that are found in vegetable oils such canola oil, which the American Heart Association has promoted for no good reason.
Also, trans fats, which unfortunately still can be hidden in food, will cause brain dysfunction. Replace the vegetable oils with olive oil, avocado or coconut oil. Walnut and macadamia also are reasonable choices.
The next substance to be aware of is alcohol. Although there may be
some long-held belief that modest alcohol can be beneficial, there is no question that chronic overconsumption is incredibly damaging.
Alcohol also is not a good agent to use for sleep as it tends to actually lessen the type of sleep that we need to regenerate ourselves.
The next target is refined carbohydrates found in white bread, white flour, white rice, pizza dough, pasta and pastries. Close behind are sugar substitutes, including aspartame. Regarding all the sugar substitutes, the list is long and can be found on the internet.
Stevia generally is a healthy choice.
Cured meats are the next item of concern. They are in jerky, pepperoni, bacon, salami, pastrami and hot dogs.
The good news is that greatly reducing these foods can lead to improvement of some of the damage that already has started in many people.
The ultimate solution to improving our food will be when the government stops subsidizing products that lead to damage and promotes subsidies for healthy choices.
Call your local, state and national representatives to help initiate and promote this process. Industry and government will not do this on their own, but through pressure and overall economic balance, we may indeed accomplish this common goal.
This will not be an economic loss but a favorable economic shift in which no industry needs to suffer while the consumer benefits.

Reach out to certified menopause practitioner for symptom management
Sterling Federal Bank’s Ahlers elected a director for FHLBank Chicago
Menopause is a topic that would not have come up in polite conversation years ago, but these days there is more research available and more attention being paid to addressing a woman’s physical and mental health needs during this big “change” in her life.
From that body of research, we are learning more about the many symptoms that can be associated with changing hormone levels and more about the benefits and risks of therapies used to treat symptoms and protect long-term health.
Hot flashes may be the most widely recognized symptom suffered by women who are transitioning to menopause (a period of time known as perimenopause), but there are many others, including changes in the monthly cycle, night sweats, sleep problems, mood changes and brain fog. I was surprised to learn that my hip pain, dry eyes and itchy ears also might be attributed to hormonal changes.
While these symptoms can be annoying and even debilitating for some, they are mostly temporary. More concerning is that the hormonal changes a woman experiences up to and after menopause also can affect her cardiovascular health and bone health.
Hormone replacement therapy once was regularly prescribed to treat symptoms related to menopause. It fell out of favor because of a perceived increase in cardiovascular disease risk. With more information available, that thinking has changed.
These days, the use of hormone replacement therapy has seen a resurgence, but its use is more
BEYOND TRIM
nuanced than it once was.
If you have been experiencing symptoms of pre- or peri-menopause, you may wish to seek out a certified menopause practitioner and see if they can help to manage your symptoms as treatment at the appropriate time also could affect your overall health going forward. It’s important to find a doctor that specializes. Many medical providers, even if their specialty is women’s health, are not well versed in the ins and outs of menopause or current in their understanding of hormone therapy.
There is an organization that is working to change that. The Menopause Society (formerly The North American Menopause Society) was formed in 1989 as a resource for health professionals to address the needs of their patients who are experiencing menopause.
The Menopause Society funds research and provides education for providers and patients alike. Providers can become certified as menopause practitioners and their website maintains a directory of certified providers.
You can find The Menopause Society provider directory at https://portal. menopause.org/NAMS/NAMS/Directory/Menopause-Practitioner.aspx.

Melissa Trumpy last seen in 2021 Sheriff still looking for leads in missing woman case
By BRANDON CLARK bclark@shawmedia.com
MOUNT CARROLL – Three years after a Monticello, Wisconsin, woman was last seen in northwestern Illinois, local investigators still are looking for leads as to why she disappeared.
Melissa A. Trumpy was believed to be visiting her boyfriend, Derek S. Hammer, at his mother’s house in Shannon in Carroll County before her disappearance Oct. 26, 2021.
“As we approach the three-year anniversary of her disappearance, our office remains committed to providing answers and closure to the family and friends of Melissa,” Carroll County Sheriff Ryan Kloepping said in a news release just before the anniversary of her disappearance. “The case continues to be an active investigation that has not been forgotten and continues to be investigated on a regular basis.”
After her disappearance, Trumpy’s car was found on Bolton Road in rural Freeport. The sheriff’s office initiated its investigation the next day. Meanwhile, Hammer was taken into custody for outstanding warrants out of Green County, Wisconsin, that accused him of maintaining a drug house, illegal possession of a firearm as a felon, possession of cocaine, possession with intent and domestic abuse. Those charges date to when Hammer was living with Trumpy in Monticello. She reportedly was a witness against him.
“New search warrants and searches continue to be executed as new information is obtained,” Kloep-

ping said in the release. “In August, a team of law enforcement professionals from across the country met with our team of investigators working on this case. This team has experience and knowledge with successful investigations and prosecution of similar cases and was provided with access to this case prior to their arrival.”
Kloepping could not discuss the meeting details because the case still is under investigation.
Trumpy’s ex-boyfriend Benjamin Affrunti said October is especially hard for Melissa’s three children.
“My daughter’s birthday is on the fourth and Melissa’s is on the 13th,” Affrunti said. “The 27th is the three-year anniversary of her disappearance. There’s no closure. The kids haven’t been able to bury their mother. So it’s a difficult month that just gets more difficult as time goes on.”
Kloepping said his office has been assisted by multiple state and federal law enforcement agencies and has executed more than 40 search warrants and subpoenas regarding Trumpy’s case.
Trumpy, who was 37 at the time of her disappearance, is 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighs 163 pounds and has blue eyes and blonde hair. She was wearing a black sweatshirt, black coat, black pants and shiny boots at the time of her disappearance.
Authorities encourage anyone with information related to Trumpy’s disappearance or any suspicious activity during the evening of Oct. 26, 2021, or the early morning hours of Oct. 27, 2021, to call Carroll County Crime Stoppers at 815-244-7867 or their local law enforcement agency.

wins first regional championship as co-op
By DRAKE LANSMAN dlansman@shawmedia.com
STERLING – Early this season, Erie-Prophetstown girls volleyball coach Heather Bruns recognized her team could accomplish big things.
The Panthers have continued to prove her right.
E-P beat Rock Falls 25-15, 25-21 in Thursday’s Class 2A Newman Regional final to earn the program’s first regional volleyball hardware since becoming a co-op in 2018.
Second-seeded E-P advanced to play top-seeded Seneca in a Bureau Valley Sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Panthers (31-3-2) were able to find holes in the Rockets’ defense as Kaylee Keegan finished with 25 assists.
Bruns started coaching at Prophetstown in 2015. Prophetstown won a regional title in 1982 and Erie last won a plaque in 2013.
“This area of volleyball is always so strong, so it’s always really hard to get a regional,” Bruns said. “This was one of our goals at the beginning of the season. It feels good.”
Rock Falls surged in the second set, tying things at 17 and forcing an E-P

timeout before the Panthers locked in.
The Rockets took an 18-17 lead but E-P went on an 8-3 run to close out the match.
Ashlyn Johnson (11), Jamie Neumiller (9) and Lauren Abbott (8) led E-P in kills.
“It’s just huge for us to make it here. We’ve worked so hard this whole season,” Abbott said. “It was cool to finally make it this far.”
With numerous playmakers on the
floor at the same time, the Panthers have continued to play unselfishly.
“Everyone has a role on our team. That’s our motto,” Abbott said. “Whether you’re on the bench or you’re on the court. Anyone can have an on game, anyone can have an off game. We always pick each other up and that’s what really makes us a solid team.”
E-P had to hold off a Rock Falls team coming off a three-set win over thirdseeded Sherrard on Oct. 29. The Rock-
ets trailed 12-0 in the opening set against Sherrard before coming back to win that match.
“They came with energy and ready to go,” Bruns said of her Panthers. “That second set, they tied it at 17 and at that point, it’s time to go. It’s a quick game to eight. We do those drills in practice all the time. So they were ready for that.”
E-P was prepared for a scrappy Rock Falls team. The Rockets made some hitting errors at times but went out battling down the stretch.
“Their libero [Elizabeth Lombardo] played amazing both Tuesday night and tonight,” Bruns said. “I think our girls were just able to find some holes, which was helpful.”
Neumiller said the team has a lot of leaders and winning a regional was something E-P has been working toward since the summer.
“I’m so proud of this team,” she said, “and everything we’ve done.”
There were some ups and downs for Rock Falls this season while finding a new lineup after finishing third at state last year.

Lombardo said the Rockets were kind of slow in the first set against E-P, but the team came together.
“Our team has really improved and progressed from the beginning of the season,” Lombardo said. “I really think we fought really hard until the last point.”
The match ended on an Abbott spike that ricocheted off a Rock Falls’ block attempt and went out of bounds.
“It’s been really special to play with these girls,” Abbott said. “They are my best friends and I’m really excited to see where we can go.”
Peyton Umstead had 21 digs for E-P and Brynn Brown had an ace.
Keegan also had a kill while directing the offense as the team’s setter.

much better from the first summer contact that we had in July until now,” Bruns said of Keegan. “She has proven herself and she runs the court.”
Rock Falls coach Jolene Bickett said E-P was hitting on all cylinders.
“We made some runs and showed what we could do, but it was a little bit too late,” she said. “You can’t always come from behind in volleyball.
“I always tell the girls I can handle losing as long as we go out doing what we do well. And thankfully, that second set, we came back and did what I thought what we could do.”
Bickett said it’s nice to see E-P have success as a co-op program.
“When I first started coaching at Rock Falls 25 years ago with Sheila [Pillars], we would go to Prophetstown. And they weren’t as competitive,” she said. “It’s nice to see a familiar opponent not too far away reap the rewards.”

E-P falls short in upset bid against No. 2 Bismarck-Henning
By DRAKE LANSMAN dlansman@shawmedia.com
Seeded No. 15 in Class 2A, Erie-Prophetstown almost pulled off the upset over No. 2-seeded and undefeated Bismarck-Henning.
Erie-Prophetstown fell 14-6 on a touchdown in the final minute.
In a defensive struggle, Keegan Winckler’s 1-yard touchdown plunge after a 46-yard pass to Demetree Larson gave E-P a 6-0 lead in the second quarter.
The Panthers (5-5) held Bismarck-Henning (10-0) off the scoreboard until a Connor Powell rushing touchdown with 6:27 left. E-P blocked the extra-point attempt, leaving the two teams tied 6-6.
The Blue Devils got the ball back late and a 55-yard touchdown pass from Anderson Thomas to Chaz Dubois with 38 seconds left in the game was the difference. Bismarck-Henning advanced to face No. 7 Seneca this week.

Winckler threw for 79 yards and ran for 44 for Erie-Prophetstown.

Hypnotist to perform Nov. 6 at Sauk Valley Community College
By BRANDON CLARK bclark@shawmedia.com
DIXON – Curious about hypnosis?
Join Sauk Valley Community College from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, to see a performance by hypnotist and mentalist Brian Imbus.
Imbus has been performing across the country for more than 25 years. He said anyone has the ability to be hypnotized, so long as they are open and willing.
“Let’s say we bring 20 people on stage,” Imbus said. “On average, I’m probably going to keep 12 to 13 of them that actually get hypnotized. The other people that don’t get hypnotized, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they can’t be. It’s the same thing as going to sleep at night. If you try too hard, it’s not going to happen. However, if you allow me to

lead you through the process, it’ll work every time.”
Although Imbus has been involved with hypnotism and magic since high school, he did not set out to become a practitioner.
“I told my parents I wanted to be an entertainer in high school,” Imbus said. “Like any concerned parent, they suggested I come up with a Plan B. So I went to a nearby recruiting office during my lunch hour and signed up that day to join the Navy after I graduated. It caught my parents of guard when I told them.”
However, Imbus never stopped honing his craft of entertaining others.
“Being out at sea for dozens of days at a time was a great opportunity for me to work on my magic, hypnotism and mentalism,” Imbus said. “However, I still wasn’t planning on making a living from it at that point.”

After leaving the Navy, Imbus attended Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, where he got a job waiting tables at a Ruby Tuesdays.
“I became known as the magic guy,” Imbus said. “Families would request me to wait on them because I performed magic tricks at my tables. One day, the CEO of a small business came in and asked if I was available for a holiday party he was hosting. That was my first paid gig.”
After that, Imbus said he continued working his tech sales job throughout the week and started traveling to do paid shows during the weekend. After a year, he quit his day job.
“I took the thick Chicago phonebook and started calling every business I could find to offer my services,” Imbus said. “I slowly started building my business and after a year I was doing 40 to

Imbus said people often mistakenly use hypnotism and mentalism interchangeably, but there is a difference.
“Hypnotism is the entertaining process of inviting people to join you onstage to be hypnotized as you lead them through a journey of imagination,” Imbus said. “A mentalist displays the illusion of being able to read someone’s thoughts. I don’t claim to be a psychic. I don’t talk to dead people. I create that illusion and entertain the audience in a funny and spontaneous way that you’ll never forget.”
The event is free and open to the public. SVCC is located at 173 State Route 2 in Dixon.
