Analysis links hair from Starved Rock murders to a local family Weger’s lawyer withholding family name, for now By TOM COLLINS
tcollins@shawmedia.com A lab analyzing a hair from the Starved Rock murders has traced it to a branch of a local family tree, although a lawyer for Chester Weger has not publicly disclosed the family’s name, sealing it in a recent court filing. In a recent installment of his podcast of the Starved Rock murders case, attorney Andy Hale reported a breakthrough in the forensic effort to identify a hair recovered from the glove of murder victim Frances Murphy. The hair was found not to be from Weger, who was paroled in 2019 after serving almost 60 years for murder. Whose hair is it? Hale said that hasn’t been pinpointed, but a lab was able to
trace it to a group of brothers, all deceased, from the Starved Rock region. The attorney is hoping the information ultimately will clear Weger’s name. Hale said in the podcast he would not yet disclose the brothers’ last name – notably, a recent court filing was placed under seal – but he said the family name was tendered to the special prosecutor. “This proves Chester’s innocence,” Hale said in his podcast. “It is checkmate.” Hale said an analysis of the hair showed flesh attached, suggesting it was yanked from the man’s scalp during a struggle. Hale further said the brothers’ family name was unknown to him previously, not having surfaced in any record or piece of evidence to date. While the lab still is trying to pinpoint which brother the hair belonged to – a DNA comparison from the brothers’ descendants is pending – Hale said he doesn’t “think it matters which particular
brother this comes back to.” “It’s time for Chester’s conviction to be vacated.” Hale said he would ask the special prosecutor to agree to vacate Weger’s conviction; but as of Dec. 18 there was no companion pleading at La Salle County Circuit Court. Weger’s previously scheduled hearing date of Jan. 10 had not, as of Dec. 18, been moved up. Hale did not respond to an email seeking additional information. A spokeswoman for the special prosecutor, the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, said it cannot comment on a pending case. While the identity attached to the hair is or will be new information, opposing counsel previously consulted about Weger’s claims of innocence have said another’s hair does not necessarily exclude Weger from being a party to the killings, nor does it guarantee him a reversal.

‘It’s once in a lifetime,’ mother says of her child’s Disney wish being granted By MARIBETH M. WILSON mwilson@shawmedia.com
Quinn Thompson was surprised by Santa on Tuesday at her home in Spring Valley, where he revealed to Quinn and her family they would be traveling to Disney World after the new year. Led by whooping police and fire vehicles, Santa arrived with gifts for Quinn’s siblings; Rory, 6, and brother Bennett, 10, before presenting Quinn with Minnie Mouse ears and telling her she would be going to Disney. As a child with cystic fibrosis, Quinn’s wish was granted by the Illinois Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Quinn’s mother, Sydney, said it was a “big shock” when she was diagnosed, because no one on either side of the family had it. “She was born at 36 weeks,” she said. “She had a procedure at 24 hours old. She was in the NICU [neonatal intensive care unit] for 24 days. She came home on Christmas Eve and our lives were changed.” Sydney said between she and her husband Kyle one of them was at the hospital with Quinn throughout her stay and the other remained at home with Bennett and Rory. She said that was part of the reason they chose to sign up for Make-A-Wish, not just for what Quinn has been through, but for her siblings, as well. “Everyone deserves a little fun and excitement,” she said. “Her care requires a little bit more and it takes not only more for her but more from them as well. Which is our normal, so we don’t think anything of it.” Quinn reveled in quiet excitement throughout the night, Sydney said she

Bennett said he was most looking forward to making a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop, where visitors get to take home whatever they make. “You go in there and you put the pieces together,” he said. “Then you take a crystal and add it in and it turns that color.” According to the website, the “kyber” crystal is available in red, blue, green or violet. Sydney said Quinn has been through a lot at 5 – as well as her other children – and it’s hard to put into words what this trip will mean to them. “It’s amazing. I don’t know how to fully explain it,” she said. “But, to have that break to celebrate her and our other kids, it’s once in a lifetime.”

Mistletoe Misfits bring joy in inaugural season Dozen women dress like elves, tell jokes on visits to senior living facilities By STEPHANIE JAQUINS
Shaw Local News Network correspondent Clad in red and green attire with sparkles and pointy ears, a team of elves aiming to brighten the holidays through singing and dancing took to nursing homes this month. A nursing home resident’s comment of appreciation earlier this year helped spur the creation of the performing elves group. Tracy Carriere of Princeton was performing with another group in the fall at Liberty Village in Princeton when a resident took her hand after a performance. “She said, ‘I just so appreciate you gals coming out here, because we get so isolated and we never get to go out to see things like this.’ It was heartwarming that she was so excited that we were there, but it broke my heart at the same time. I couldn’t get it out of my head,” Carriere said. She went to a spin class and told a friend the woman’s comment and she wanted to start a group that dances, sings Christmas tunes and dresses as elves. “I said, ‘You know, we’ll just go from there’ and she said, ‘Well, that sounds amazing. Let’s do this.” They asked around and found many women willing to donate their time. The Mistletoe Misfits quickly grew to 12 members, which is almost as many as the group can accommodate, given their restricted spaces indoors. The format and songs were decided as a group and Carriere planned the choreography for the dances and suggested they tell corny elf jokes, such as: What kind of car does an elf drive? A Toy-ota.
Stephanie Jaquins for Shaw Local News Network
The Mistletoe Misfits performed Dec. 16 at Allure of Peru. In their first season, they did 12 performances. In their first season, they did 12 performances. They began practicing in mid-November. “Our shows get better every time we perform. Not so much because we’re worried about being a professional dancer. We are far from it. The Mistletoe Misfits is called that for a reason,” Carriere said. “We expect ourselves to make some mistakes here and there, but the joke-telling and the ad libbing and the interaction with the crowd, I think, has gotten better and better every show.” Each elf picked their own name and most curated a costume from the name. For example, Carriere is Twinkles, so she added a lot of twinkle lights and stars to her costume. Another is Cookie, so she wears an apron and incorporated gingerbread cookies and other sweets.
Adrienne McCaslin, of Newark, is Prickly, so in addition to her elf ears and outfit, she wore leggings emblazoned with Christmas-themed cactuses and a cactus on her candy cane. Each elf has a decorated candy cane they dance with. “It’s just so much fun,” McCaslin said about participating. “Even just walking down the street together you see a group of people and they wave at you and smile. It just makes it all worthwhile.” Mary Glenn, of Magnolia, was Sparkle this year, but has plans to change to Merry and Bright to go with her name. “I’m doing this for the residents and the kids and their smiles,” she said, The group participated in Princeton’s inaugural lighted Christmas parade, where they received an award in the individuals/families category.

Otherwise, their performances mostly were at nursing homes. They’d like to branch out to perform for children next year. “We have been out in costume having lunch and kids will come up and ask, ‘Are you a real elf?’ and we’ll just take pictures with them,” Carriere said. For the first season, they were happy to visit as many nursing homes as they did. “They have been just so excited to have us come in, first of all, and then secondly afterwards just the delight. I get messages from them all the time just thanking us because the seniors had such a good time. We asked them to sing along and we tell the jokes to them and we engage, go out in the crowd. The reaction has been exceptionally positive.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL: PUTNAM COUNTY 58, HENRY 40
Putnam County switches ‘D,’ beats Henry Maggie Richetta, Ava Hatton combine for 39 points to lead Panthers KEVIN CHLUM
kchlum@shawmedia.com HENRY – All season, the Putnam County girls basketball team has relied on its zone defense. But on Dec. 18, for the first time this season, the Panthers had to go away from their defensive strategy in the first half. Henry-Senachwine/Lowpoint-Washburn’s Brynna Anderson drained a 3-pointer to pull the Mallards within five points with 4:46 left in the first half, leading PC coach Jared Sale to call a timeout. The Panthers switched to man-toman defense and held Henry to three points the rest of the half as Putnam County pulled away for a 58-40 victory in a Tri-County Conference game. “Give them credit because they shot really well in the first half and forced us out of the zone,” Sale said. “That’s the first time all year we’ve gotten out of the zone in the first half. They had a bunch of 3s and we felt like we had to, so we made a little bit of an adjustment there.” The Mallards got on the board before the game clock started. Putnam County was assessed a technical foul for marking a wrong player in the book, and Henry’s Rachel Eckert hit both free throws. However, the Panthers quickly retook the lead on a 3-pointer from Ava Hatton followed by back-to-back baskets by Maggie Richetta, a 3 from Gabby Doyle and a pull-up jumper by Hatton for a 12-4 advantage. The Panthers continued to play well offensively throughout the first half, building a 39-21 halftime lead. The 39 points nearly matched PC’s per game average of 43.8 entering the game Dec. 18. Hatton hit 4 of 8 3-pointers and scored 17 of her 19 points in the first half, while Richetta had eight of her game-high 20 in the first half. Doyle drained three 3s and finished with 11 points for PC (12-3, 6-1 TCC). “Ava was obviously on fire,” Sale said. “She came out and hit a ton of

We were able to pound it in to Maggie. That kind of got us going.” While Putnam County was hitting 48.3% of its shots, including 42.9% from 3, the Mallards managed to hang around early with hot shooting from behind the arc. Eckert hit a 3 in the first quarter and Anderson sank three shots from behind the arc in the second quarter as the Mallards, who were without their best player in Kaitlyn Anderson due to injury, closed an 11-point deficit with 6:21 left in the second quarter down to five points with 4:46 left. “I felt like our fight and our heart was really good,” Henry coach Erik Greenwood said. “We knew she was going to be out, so we had a week to prepare. Our message to our kids was
to come out and fight, there’s shots available to go out and take advantage. I’m proud of them. “We had a couple days (of practice) and we just really worked and stayed focused on trying to be consistent on (shooting). I feel like some of the kids who were putting in that work, it paid off and those were the kids who were knocking some down.” After Brynna Anderson’s third 3 of the quarter, Sale called the timeout to make the change to man. PC limited Henry to just three free throws the rest of the half. “When we went to man, it helped a lot because zone just wasn’t working,” Richetta said. “They were just hitting a lot of 3s. When we went to man, it helped us out.” Meanwhile, Hatton drained a 3 to start Putnam County’s 16-3 closing run.
“I thought our intensity ratcheted up a little bit,” Sale said. “We were able to get some turnovers, get out and run and take some easy ones. When we made that switch, I think it kind of sparked everything on the offensive end.” Brynna Anderson knocked down four 3s and led the Mallards (3-9, 0-7) with 13 points, while Lauren Harbison added 10 points. Greenwood said Kaitlyn Anderson may return for the Earlville tournament Dec. 26-28. “We’re improving,” Greenwood said. “We’re a young team. We have four freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors and one senior. We’re getting a little bit better. Hopefully, we’re going to get over the hump. I was thinking we could get to seven or eight wins. We have three, so I think that’s still in the ballpark for us.”

ALL-NEW mobility technology
Introducing the world’s lightest mobility scooter with anti-tip technology The So Lite Scooter is easy to transport and almost impossible to tip over. TM
SM-PR2110209
Like millions of older Americans, I struggle with mobility. For years, I watched my quality of life slip away, as I was forced to stay home while friends and family took part in activities I’d once enjoyed. I thought I’d made some progress when I got a mobility scooter, but then I realized ing, Inc. how hard it was to transport. Taking it apart and putting it back together was like doing a jigsaw puzzle. Once I had it disassembled, I had to try to ard . put all of the pieces in the trunk of a car, go to wherever I was going, and repeat the process in reverse. Travel scooters were easier to transport, but they were uncomfortable and scary to drive, I always felt like I was ready to tip over. Then I found the So LiteTM Scooter. Now there’s nothing that can hold me back. Years of work by innovative engineers have resulted in a scooter that’s designed with seniors in mind. They created Electronic Stability Control (ESC) that makes it virtually impossible to tip over. If you try to turn too nment quickly, the scooter automatically slows down to prevent it from tipping over. The battery provides powerful energy at a fraction of the weight of most batteries. With its rugged yet lightweight aluminum frame, the So LiteTM Scooter is the most portable scooter ever—but it can hold up to 275 pounds—yet weighs only 40.8 pounds without the battery! What’s tandard more, it easily folds up for storage in a car seat, trunk or even on an
