rolling to oldies and western music. At times, we have had up to 80 people. Everyone is welcome to join us; the doors are open. Just walk right in and follow the music. Once you have attended an Open Mic Night, you will be coming back for more. See you at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24. To close out August, we sail on the U.S. Mail Boat Tour of Lake Geneva. This is an always popular trip. Our bus is full, but watch for new and exciting trips that are coming up in the next months. On another note: Congratulations goes out to Vicki Frazer, our new SHIP certified counselor. Vicki joined our team as a BEST employee and we found her to be a valuable asset to our organization. Through the assistance of our very own Samantha Harazin, Vicki has had excellent training and has just received her certificate for SHIP. Just in time for open enrollment starting Oct. 15. We would also like to welcome Trinidad “Trine” Felan to LCCOA. Trine is from ABLE and we are so happy to have her as our new receptionist. She is bilingual, which is a great asset to our clients
here at LCCOA. You will see some new faces around LCCOA this summer and fall, these are students from the BEST Student Worker Program. They are here to learn about our organization and to receive training from all of us, including our clients. So please welcome them. With all the new faces coming we do need to take this time to say good-bye to a face you have seen at the Center for many years. Jennifer Lang will be leaving LCCOA and moving on to new and exciting adventures. On behalf of the staff, the clients, the Board of Directors and myself, we would like to thank Jennifer for all her years of service to LCCOA. I am sure Jennifer will be stopping in to visit with all her friends. Last, but not least, we want to wish Geoff Vanderlin a speedy recovery. Geoff gave us a bit of a scare recently. We have been told he is doing well and we look forward to seeing him around town. Until next time, “LCCOA a place where you belong, a place called home.” – Susan

Executive Director By Susan Lawler Ever since I was a child, and of course that was the Stone Age, I hated the thoughts of August arriving. I knew it was the end of the summer, but here at Lee County Council on Aging it is the beginning of a wonderful month. We start off with the Petunia City Brass Drum Corps show on Aug. 1. They will rock your boat. Next, we head to the Hawaiian Islands routed through the Post House Ballroom for our annual Luau. Here you will enjoy a delicious meal, laughter and of course, great conversations. So don’t forget to buy your tickets for the Aug. 15 event and join us for a fun-filled evening. To top it off, we will have door prizes. Mark your calendars for Aug. 21, because it’s National Seniors Citizens Day! Stop by the Lee County Council on Aging for refreshments,
Bingo and prizes. On behalf of the LCCOA staff, the Board of Directors and myself, I would like to take this time to thank all our senior citizens for all their contributions to our community. Without the support of our senior citizens of our community, Lee County would not continue to be the interesting, the innovated and wonderful place it is today. So kudos to all our senior citizens of Lee County. If you haven’t been to Open Mic Night, you are truly missing a knockyour-socks-off evening or should I say knock your boots off? You can hear the music from outside our LCCOA doors. Any given Friday, we have 45-plus people rocking and

POST HOUSE BALLROOM
BY CATHY REGLIN Lee County Council on Aging
LCCOA was very lucky to have helpers at our Day of Caring sponsored by the United Way of Lee County. Our workers were Executive Director Susan Lawler; Cathy Reglin, Post House Ballroom manager; and volunteers representing Kreider: Ben, Stephen, Mollie, Justin, Nichole and Julio. They dug out bushes, cleaned the cobwebs outside the building, washed windows, pulled weeds from the flower beds, and cleaned the window sills in the Ballroom. We thank them very much!

August! Hope it will be beautiful weather, but, if it’s hot, at least it’s one month where we expect it. I just don’t want to see my niece posting snow pictures on Facebook and saying she wishes it was winter. That’ll come in its own due time. Meanwhile, for events in the Ballroom, a wedding every weekend from now through the first week of November. Two great events are set for Aug. 15. Lunch & Learn’s presenter this month is Matt Appleman who will tell about what he’s been doing to update his historical building on First Street, where his business, Crescendo Hair, is located. Then, we have our annual Luau Supper on the same day in the late afternoon. Hawaiian-style food (my favorite is the whipped sweet potatoes) served to you at your table, leis, music, and fun volunteer wait staff. It’s been a tradition in Dixon for decades. If you haven’t come to it yet, now could be the time. Finally I’d like to say thank you to several people. We had a group representing Kreider Services work at our build-
ing for the United Way’s Day of Caring. They were hard and diligent workers, a very uplifting experience for us all! And, the people who helped me after I fell at a wedding reception. I don’t remember her name, but the nurse who spoke calmly to me while I was laying on the floor with my hand covering my broken nose, certainly helped me tremendously. It’s been 2 weeks and my bruises are slowly fading. It’s amazing how a calm voice coming from someone who knows what she’s doing can take the fear away. That goes for nurses in hospitals as well. Thank you, all you nurses! If you need a beautiful place to have an event, look us up on Facebook. Go to posthouseballroom.com for information about the building, prices and to see our event calendar. Visit posthouseballroom.shutterfly. com for pictures of events held here. Then, you can email me at posthouseballroom@gmail. com or call me at 815-288-0892, and we’ll talk. All proceeds from the Ballroom go to Lee County Council on Aging for senior services in Lee County.

MEDICARE Q&A
How can I appeal a denial by my Part D Plan? Dear Marci, My doctor prescribed a medication for my heart condition, but when I went to the pharmacy to pick it up, my pharmacist said that my plan would not cover it. I called my Part D plan and they told me that my drug was not on their formulary. What can I do? – Logan (Tallahassee, Florida) Dear Logan, A formulary is a prescription drug plan’s list of covered drugs. If your Part D plan told you that this drug was off-formulary, it means that your plan does not usually cover it. You do, however, have options to get your drug covered. You should speak with the provider who prescribed this medication. Your provider may be able to prescribe a similar medication that is on your plan’s formulary. If your doctor believes that you need the off-formulary medication, because
the available medications on the plan’s formulary would be unsafe or ineffective for treating your condition, ask your provider if they can assist you with an appeal to get the medication covered. First, you or your doctor must file an exception request (a formal coverage request) with your plan. Contact your plan to learn how to file an exception request. Your provider should write a letter of support for your request. Your doctor may file on your behalf, but is not required to do so. Your plan should issue a decision within 72 hours. You can request a fast (expedited) exception request if you or your provider feel that your health could be seriously harmed by waiting the standard timeline for a decision. If your doctor supports your decision to file an expedited exception request, the plan must follow the expedited timeline. You can request an
expedited exception request without your doctor’s support, but in this case, your plan does not have to follow the expedited timeline. If the plan grants your request to expedite the process, you will get a decision within 24 hours of the initial request. If your exception request is approved, your drug will be covered. If your exception request is denied, your plan should send you a Notice of Denial of Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage. You have 60 days from the date listed on this notice to begin the formal appeal process by filing an appeal with your plan. This is true regardless of whether your appeal is under standard or expedited review. Follow the directions on the notice. If your doctor is not appealing on your behalf, you may want to ask your doctor to write a letter of support addressing the plan’s reasons for not covering your medication.
Your plan should issue a decision within seven days, or within 72 hours if you are filing an expedited appeal. If your plan approves your appeal, your drug will be covered. If your plan denies your appeal, there are several further levels of appeal you can pursue. Follow the instructions on the denial notice to learn how to appeal and where to send appeals materials. During the appeals process, you might pay out-of-pocket to get the drug our plan is denying. If you do this and later win your appeal, the plan should reimburse you. Keep receipts and submit them to your plan. – Marci Marci’s Medicare Answers is a service of the Medicare Rights Center, the nation’s largest independent source of information and assistance for people with Medicare.
Annual LCCOA meeting and election in October The Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) annual meeting and election for the Board of Directors will be in October. Details of the annual meeting and election will be in the September edition of the Golden Echo.

the election and are not currently a paid member, you need to pay your dues by Sept. 14 to receive a ballot. Membership for 1 year is $20 per person or $30 for a household. The number of seats up for election

v a e h I E v s e n r had! o i t a c It’s One of the Best Va Immediately following my discharge from CGH for a total hip replacement, I came to Regency Garden Unit for extended skilled care. A patient in my condition is nearly 100% dependent on others for assistance in all areas of life. When I handed over my care to your staff I did so with the belief that they would take care of me and that they cared about me as a person. The entire staff followed through in every way possible with respect to my beliefs, that they would take care of me and would do so in a manner that demonstrated they cared about me as a person. You have much to be grateful for in the staff you have. I extend my deepest gratitude to all staff at Regency Care for the part they had in my healing.

10 This month instead of focusing on programs and activities for the Outreach article I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce our newest member of the Outreach team, Vicki Frazer. Vicki has completed her SHIP training and received confirmation of her SHIP certification that is being mailed out as I write this. SHIP training is one of our most important aspects to the training process involved to do this job .It also is what allows us to be able to assist with Medicare counseling and provide our clients with support during open enrollment season. The remainder of training will take place all hands-on, on the job training and job shadowing which she has already begun. A little about Vicki: She was raised in Cherry Valley, and lived in Rockford prior to coming to Dixon in 2012. Vicki has five sons, two of whom are grown and live in Rockford area and three who live with her and attend our Dixon Public Schools. She also has 2 grandchildren with one more on the way in October. Vicki has worked much of her life in an office, through being a receptionist in medical settings and also in the financial aid department at Sauk Valley Community College. She began her journey here with us this past January through the BEST, Inc. program acting as our recep-

Vicki stated that “it was a great way to get acclimated to the environment here at LCCOA.” Nearing the end of April, she took an added interest in the programs we provide through the Outreach department and began speaking with us about the possibility of learning more as she felt she may be interested in pursuing this as a career option. As you can see, things clicked and we are happy to have her aboard!
