Indian Oaks’ Mike Mason chips onto the green July 23 during last year’s Men’s Lincoln Highway golf tournament at Shady Oaks Country Club in Amboy. C.J. Wade is a longtime local golf coach, currently with Sauk Valley Community College, and he’s also the new golf course manager at Shady Oaks Country Club. Peter Balser/Pbalser@saukvalley.com

I

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5551 @Brian Weidman

f C.J. Wade has his way, he’ll be a leading man of two thriving golf entities in the area. After being out of the coaching business for a bit, Wade is completing his first season guiding the Sauk Valley Community College program. A 2003 Sauk grad, Wade took over the team in early August, in time for the fall portion of the schedule. The spring season was to have started April 10 in Galesburg, but that meet was pushed back to May 1 due to cold weather. Wade was a successful coach at the high school level for 10 years. He was at Newman, his alma mater, from 2005-08, then took over at Sterling from 2009-14. When the Sauk job became available last summer, Wade accepted the challenge of leading a program he once played for. “Going to Sauk for 2 years gave me a lot of respect for the college game,” Wade said. “I know a lot of people that went to Sauk want to see the program do well, and I just hope to make everybody proud. It’s nice to see some of the kids from the local communities come to Sauk and play golf.” With a limited budget, Wade has Sauk Valley Media

to be creative when it comes to lining up players. He noted he checks newspapers for scores to see who is playing well; monitors results of off-season tournaments; and checks with high school athletic directors to see who might be available to play and who has already committed. After that, he makes his pitch. “You can’t step on anybody’s toes at the collegiate level,” Wade said. This spring, Wade is down to just a few players, and will not field a full team. That will change in the fall, however, and he hopes to have between seven and 10 golfers. The goal is to fare well in the Arrowhead Conference – and beyond. “We’re trying to do what’s best for the kids,” Wade said. “They’re playing collegiately, and we want them to improve and hopefully move on to a bigger school and play more golf.” Coaching golf, however, is more of a side gig. Wade’s day job is that of golf course manager, and he just started a job at Shady Oaks Country Club near Amboy. Wade was at Emerald Hill in Sterling from 2006-14; Manteno Golf Club in 2015; and Timber Creek in Dixon from 2015-17. He was hired at Shady Oaks in January. WADE continued on 134 9

Wade: Shady’s got great history WADE

CONTINUED FROM 9 t

“Shady’s got a great history,” Wade said. “All the golfers that have come through Shady Oaks, whether it be from back in the ’60s all the way through now, they’ve had a great tradition of players. It seems like they’re all lowkey, always have a smile on their face, and they want to see the course do well. I’ve met a lot of good people already, and I’m excited about the opportunity.” The golf course business in the area has been spotty at best, with courses closing in Sterling, Oregon, Polo, Morrison and Mount Carroll in the past 5 years. It is now looking like Timber Creek, Wade’s former employer, could be next as it has been for sale for

• Beautiful 18 Hole Course • Truly a Hidden Treasure! • Fun, Friendly, Forgiving • Bar, Restaurant, Banquet Room • Great for Outings and Events SM-ST1524362

Sauk Valley Media

months and no buyer who is willing to keep it a golf course has stepped forward. It is in that business climate Wade takes over at Shady Oaks. “First and foremost, we’ve got to have golfers,” Wade said. “That’s your No. 1 key, whether you do that through little kids’ lessons, junior lessons, outings – you’ve got to find different things. You’ve got to find avenues to bring cash flow into the golf courses. “At Timber Creek, we tried a bunch of different things, whether it was beer tastings, bands, or food and beverage. Sometimes that stuff doesn’t work out, but if you’re not trying something new, you’re falling behind the times. It’s a matter of golf courses in the area finding other ways to make money rather than strictly relying on golf.”

Discover Lake Carroll We would like to invite everyone to come out and enjoy the Lake Carroll Golf Course and Restaurant. Lake Carroll is a public golf course, contrary to some beliefs, and restaurant located just north of Lanark in scenic Carroll County. The newly renovated 18-hole golf course is spread out over 220 acres, allowing for calming seclusion throughout your round. With newly renovated tees and bunkers, along with some other major changes, Lake Carroll golf course will prove to have some of the best playing conditions in Northwest Illinois. The relatively short yardage is quite deceptive, with the numerous doglegs, tree-lined fairways, strategically placed bunkers and well-manicured, undulating greens making the Lake Carroll golf course play longer than the listed 6,520 yards. The four different tees allow all golfers an enjoyable experience on the course. Regardless of skill, Lake Carroll offers 18 holes of perfectly mixed scenery, serenity, challenge and personal attention to make every play day an experience to be remembered. At Lake Carroll, our mission is to offer great customer service, every time. That is why our pro shop staff has a PGA golf professional on site throughout the day. From offering expert advice on pro shop merchandise to lessons, we can help you with all of your golfing needs. Lake Carroll also has the largest, well-stocked pro shop in Northwest Illinois. We have it stocked with major brands of golf goods and boast the largest selection of in-stock shoes, from FootJoy, Nike, Puma and Adidas. We also offer demo clubs – in brands such as TaylorMade, PING, Mizuno, Cobra, Nike, Cleveland and Callaway – for golfers to test on the range or the course. The PGA golf professional staff also are experts in club fitting, allowing golfers to get the equipment to match their unique swing. No two swings are the same; why should clubs be any different? Improving one’s enjoyment of golf is

Sauk Valley Media

the Lake Carroll professional staff’s duty, which is why it offers instruction for adults, groups, juniors and clinics tailored to make people into whatever kind of golfer they aspire to be. We offer a no-pressure setting, and the only expectation is to enhance the student’s enjoyment of golf. Lake Carroll has the pleasure of hosting many corporate and group outings throughout the year. It is the only course in the area able to offer a full-service restaurant and bar, and be able to accommodate any size outing, large or small. Many outings have taken advantage of the large outdoor patio and grills for their dining and entertainment needs. The Lake Carroll restaurant will offer the best full-service outing in the area, by assisting with food, drink, prizes, awards, scoreboards, formats and pre-set cart assignments for your convenience. One of the luxuries available at Lake Carroll is the full-service restaurant and bar, open to the public and featuring many different lunch and dinner menu items as well as a daily soup-and-salad bar. There are daily and nightly specials as well. Stop in before a round or call the clubhouse to make reservations. Lake Carroll offers all the services you will need for a great experience, and the staff looks forward to serving everyone. – This article was submitted by Head Golf Professional Jason Hill, Lake Carroll Golf Course.

Getting past golfer’s elbow Tribune News Service

Dear Mayo Clinic, Earlier this spring, I developed pain in my wrist and on the inside of my elbow after a long weekend of golf. I iced the area for a few days, but the pain is still there when I move a certain way or try to lift anything heavy. Is it possible that I tore something in my elbow while golfing? At what point should I see a doctor? A: The condition you’re describing sounds like golfer’s elbow. It’s a common injury typically associated with overuse, and isn’t limited to golfers. Self-care measures often are enough to take care of the problem. But, because you still have symptoms after icing it for several days, it would be a good idea to see your health care provider for an evaluation. He or she can then determine whether you need additional treatment. The medical term for golfer’s elbow is medial epicondylitis. It happens when muscles and tendons that control flexing of your wrist and fingers are damaged, often by too much stress or repeated stress due to forceful wrist and finger motions. Golfers might develop this condition when they repeatedly hit the ball incorrectly or use improper swing techniques. In many cases, golfer’s elbow requires only self-care at home. Rest from golf and other repetitive wrist and hand activities. Ice the painful area for 15 to 20 minutes

at a time, three to four times a day, for several days. Take an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium. When those measures aren’t enough to relieve the pain, then it’s time to see your health care provider. He or she might recommend that you wear a type of brace called a counter-force brace on the painful arm. That can reduce strain on your muscles and tendons. Your provider also might refer you to a physical or occupational therapy program that can teach you techniques to help ease your symptoms, as well as stretching and strengthening exercises. In the majority of cases, no further evaluation or treatment is needed beyond that point. If pain is persistent, though, imaging tests might be necessary to assess the injury. A musculoskeletal ultrasound study or MRI can be used to evaluate whether there’s a tear in one of your muscles or tendons. Additional treatment may include corticosteroid injections. Although they can help ease pain for a while, in general, these injections are not effective long-term. Another newer treatment is platelet-rich plasma injections. The goal of this approach is to help heal tendon damage and promote the growth of new, healthy tissue. ELBOW continued on 384

When pain lasts despite other treatments, more invasive approaches might be necessary. One option is called ultrasonic percutaneous tenotomy, or Tenex. In this procedure, under ultrasound guidance, a doctor inserts a needle into the damaged portion of the tendon. Ultrasonic energy vibrates the needle so swiftly that the damaged tissue liquefies and is suctioned away. If symptoms don’t improve after thorough use of other treatments, then surgery might be an option to remove the damaged tissue. Once your symptoms go away, take steps to prevent golfer’s elbow from returning. Use weight training to strengthen your forearm muscles, and do stretching exercises before you go golfing to help avoid injuries. If you use older golfing irons, consider upgrading to lighter graphite clubs to reduce stress and strain on your wrists. Don’t play through pain. If you notice

discomfort in your elbow or forearm, take a break. Finally, work on your golf form and swing. If you play frequently, ask a golf instructor to evaluate your form and correct any improper habits. Repeating a swing that has poor mechanics puts you at higher risk for another injury.

HOW TO: Help kids get into golf Golf is a game of skill that can take years, if not decades, to master. Many golfers find their time on the golf course both rewarding and relaxing, even on those days when the fairways seem impossible to find. Though many players never swing a golf club until they reach adulthood, it’s never too early to hit the links. Some of the world’s most accomplished golfers, including fourtime Masters champion Tiger Woods, began playing as toddlers, and many think getting an early start can lead to a more successful game down the road. Getting kids into golf is a great way for parents to bond with their children while enjoying the great outdoors. Golf can also be used to teach kids humility, sportsmanship and the importance of hard work. Thanks to the often frustrating nature of golf, parents might find it somewhat challenging to instill a love of the game in their youngsters. There are ways, though to introduce kids to this wonderful game that kids might just play for the rest of their lives. • Focus on having fun. Few, if any, golfers could say with certainty that golf has never frustrated them. The challenge of golf may be its most appealing characteristic to older players, but young kids can be overwhelmed by the challenges golf presents. By focusing on having fun instead of perfecting techniques, parents can get kids to look forward to their time on the links. The more fun kids have, the more likely they will be to embrace the game and its many challenges. Don’t put pressure on youngsters as they develop their games, but encourage them through their struggles and reassure them that you faced the same obstacles when you started playing. • Hire an instructor with experience teaching children. Instructors with experience teaching children will understand the basics of the game and how learning those basics provides a great foundation for future enjoyment and success on the course. Instructors who have taught kids in the past also know that teaching youngsters the finer points of golf requires patience and encouragement. Ask a fellow parent or an employee at the club where you play to recommend an instructor for your child. Take advantage of any kids courses your club offers. • Buy the correct equipment. Even the best golfers are bound to struggle when using the wrong equipment. While it might be unwise to invest in especially expensive equipment for youngsters likely to grow out of it in a few months’ time, deals can be found on used kids equipment. Used kids equipment is typically subjected to less wear and tear than used equipment for adults, as kids tend to play less often and fewer holes than adults when they do play. Make sure to find correctly sized equipment that kids feel comfortable using. • Play some holes. Instructors may teach kids the differences between the types of clubs and how to swing and putt. Golf is most fun, though, when players are out on the links going from hole to hole. Instruction is important, but don’t forget to play a few holes with your child each week as well.
